Electrically Switchable and Flexible Color Displays Based on All-Dielectric Nanogratings

Abstract:Research on advanced nanostructures and smart materials that allow for dynamic color display for portable and wearable devices has developed rapidly in recent years. Here, we demonstrate an electrically switchable and flexible color display technique by incorporating an electrochromic material with all-dielectric nanogratings. Based on the strong guided-mode resonance effect, a reflective, flexible, full-color display with high color purity and gamut value is achieved. By dynamically steering the optical properties of the electrochromic material with an external voltage, high switching contrast (∼73% for blue and ∼93% for red) and low power consumption (∼3.28 mW/cm<sup>2</sup>) are demonstrated. Furthermore, based on the industrial patterned printing processes, full-color video animations are realized.
