Abstract:Perennial flowers have been widely applied in landscape for their advantages of abundant varieties, ample colors, wonderful appearance, convenient management and high landscape value. Base on the analysis of research status at home and abroad about perennials, the paper showed different kinds of styles used in landscape, and promoted some strategies development included deepen the concept of perennial flowers on landscape application, using the perennial wild resources, enrich the forms of plant distribution for diverse landscape designs, and enhance the industrialization process. To further enhance the greening and beautification of urban and rural environment level, fully reflect the species diversity and landscape diversity, then achieve healthy and sustainable development of perennial flowers industries.

Abstract:In order to stimulate rational development and utilization for plant resources of Symplocos,and promote studies and landscape use of Symplocos in China.Based on the brief analysis of originated resources of Symplocos in China,the review of Symplocos research were summarized.The author also discussed the planting design of Symplocos species in landscapes.Symplocos resources and application had not been paid much attention in China.The potential of Symplocos used as urban landscaping plants should be developed,thus could benefit the diversity of landscape and garden plants.
Perennials Selection and Planting Design for Flower Borders in City Landscape of Hangzhou, China

Abstract:Flower borders originated from the West were introduced to China in the 70's. These have been widely recognized and used in city landscape of Hangzhou in recent years. Based on the definition of flower border, the difference in concepts between flower border and bedding plants are discussed. It simulates natural landscapes of various kinds of flowering perennials by artistic design, which made the landscaping more pleasant and showed difference between the traditional bedding style. Flower borders for ten scenic spots in Hangzhou City have been investigated. The selection of ornamental perennials and their landscape use were studied. The results showed that 89 species of perennials are used typically in spring flower borders. The list of 40 commonly used perennials is shown in detail both for characteristics and growth behavior in Hangzhou city. Concerned about the investigation and analysis, 10 kinds of newly introduced perennials were recommended for further utilization. The iconography and comments of three spots were coordinated with the landscape design, so as to achieve the main principles for planting design of flower border. The valuable significance, prospective future, and the existing problems of the perennials utilizations in modern landscape were also discussed.

Abstract:Being abundant species with wide compatibili-ty,low maintenance,easy planting and transportation,flower bulbs are suitable for landscape use.Based on the brief analysis of originated resources of flower bulbs,those applications in landscaping and planting designs such as gardens plants,ground covers and wetlands are discussed.With focus on the limited species and simple configuration in current landscape uses in China,the thesis suggested to use more native flower bulbs which originated from China and commer-cial cultural varieties in landscaping designs.Thus will benefit the diversity of landscape plants and bring the colorful displays to the landscaping.The problems about applying the native resources and nationalizing of flower bulbs are also discussed.

Abstract:Flower border is a new application style for landscape planting in recent years.To aim at the status of flower borders used in the urban greenland of Shanghai,a field investigation was carried out for more than one years.40 species of perennials suitable for flower borders were recommended based on the investigation of the all kinds of plants used in the flower borders in Shanghai,as well as the analysis on their growth and appearance in landscape use.The overall evaluation and characteristics of current status for flower borders used in Shanghai were summarized.The exited problems and further development were also indicated.

Abstract:Based on the investigation of outdoor landscape plants in general hospitals of Hangzhou,from six aspects such as the plant species,plant frequency applications,ratio of arbor and shrub,ratio of evergreen and deciduous,application of plant color,as well as the lawn areas,explored the landscape plant status of general hospitals in Hangzhou.Moreover,according to the survey data analysis,some suggestions about the future landscape plants design in general hospitals were also discussed.
Landscape Application and Wild Resource Investigation of Evergreen Perennials in Zhejiang Province

Abstract:Evergreen perennials are recommended as excellent materials for landscape use, because of their traditional advantages of perennials and evergreen habit. The application of evergreen perennials would enrich the layers of plant community, as well as improve the species diversity. These advantages could reduce the excessive dependence upon evergreen trees and shrubs in winter landscape. In this paper, the definition of evergreen perennials was proposed firstly. Over 70 species were listed and classified into 4 types. 56 species of wild resource were selected as evergreen perennials in Zhejiang province, and the potentials of utilization for landscaping were also analyzed based on their natural habitat. Concerned about the leave traits in deciduous and evergreen of herbal perennials, evergreen perennials should deserve more attentions by designers. In winter plant landscaping, evergreen perennials could benefit the harmonious natural colors,and thus enrich the styles of planting design.

Abstract:Based on the collection and investigation of native germ-plasm resources of Hosta in China, the various species, varieties and cultivars of genus ' Hosta' are discussed. Of which, the native original distribution, ornamental characters and application status in landscape architecture are also indicated. Comparing to the use and current status of Hosta in the developed countries,there are some shortage of use of domestic species and varieties in China. The potential of Hosta used as ground cover plants and basin view plants should be developed. The introduction of oversea commercial Hosta's cultivars can enrich the Chinese Hosta cultural resources and will promote the utilization of Chinese native Hosto in landscape architecture.

Abstract:Being abundant species with wide compatibility, low maintenance, easy planting and unique ornamental characters, ornamental grasses are acquiring wider application in landscape. Based on investigation of urban green space in Hangzhou city, the results showed that there were about 52 species of ornamental grasses being used. According to the principles of landscape ecology and use characteristics in different height of ornamental grasses, the ornamental grasses application types of urban green space in Hangzhou are analyzed. Finally, suggestions on some application problems and the potential uses of ornamental grasses are put forward in this paper, providing references for further uses of ornamental grasses.

Abstract:Research and application of botanical pesticides, including plant chem ical defense, botanical pesticides, plant protestants, and tropical plant pestic ides are briefly reviewed. The research and application of botanical bactericide s and botanical herbicides are far less intensive and extensive compared with th e botanical insecticides. However, current researches indicates that a wide rang e of plants had the capacity of controlling weeds, bacteria and fungi. There is, therefore, a great prospect to exploit plant resources to develop bactericides, fungicides and herbicides.

Abstract:Based on the definition of flower borders, the assortment was analyzed by considering various points of view, such as biological characteristics of plants,applied form for landscape use, flowering seasons and so on. It is put forwarded that the planting design of flower border should be choosing the proper plants which matched the local climate, and indicating the main scenic styles, as well as showing the continuous scenery with lower maintaining.
Study on smellscape perception and landscape application of fragrant plants

Abstract:Plants in parks emit different fragrances. How will these fragrances affect us? How can we better allocate these plants? In this paper, five kinds of traditional fragrant plants in northern China were selected for fragrance analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and the fragrance types and diffusion process were analyzed by a smell-walking method. Subjective evaluation of fragrance perception was carried out in outdoor plant communities using a semantic differential method. At the same time, the application of fragrant plants was discussed. The purpose was to explore the relationship between smellscape and perception and provide a reference for smellscape map drawing and landscape application of fragrant plants. Study plants were shown to plants present different fragrance types: monoterpense, syringaldehyde, β-ionone and acetic acid phenylmethyl ester were the main compounds of magnolia, syringa, osmanthus and wintersweet, and linalool was also the major compounds of tree peony, osmanthus and wintersweet. Smell-walking survey reported that magnolia and tree peony exhibited a woody and light medicinal fragrance, syringa emitted a powerful hyacinth-like odor, osmanthus had a strong sweet smell, and wintersweet had a fresh sweet smell. And subjective evaluation of fragrance perception was positive; the evaluation value of osmanthus was the highest, followed by magnolia and wintersweet, and finally syringa and tree peony. Further, subjects found tree peony to be less pleasant because of its mixed fragrance. We also found that fragrance concentration and diffusion were related to plant density, tree height, receptor location and spatial range. Other factors, such as surrounding plants, landscape architecture, rockery and water also affected fragrance diffusion. Our findings show that these myriad factors should be considered comprehensively in plant allocation.

Abstract:Based on the investigation of wild ornamental spermatophyte in Guangzhou,648 wild spermatophyte species were ornamental in Guangzhou,including 136 families and 393 genera.This paper evaluated their ornamental characteristics by AHP,and made suggestions that 109 species had high ornamental value which were devided into 4 types.The native plants such as colored leaves trees,ornamental fruit and flower plants,lianes,ground covers,sciophyte and honey plants had great potential in further exploitation and application in horticulture and Lunar New Year Flower market.Through full development,the human-arbor-shrub landscape harmonious development was promoted in deed.
Guidelines for Designing Herbaceous Plants in Urban Parks Based on Landscape Preference Research

Abstract:Wild herbaceous plants have been increasingly recognized to have multifaceted ecological functions.However,their applications in urban parks and other places cannot ignore people's aesthetic concerns and experiences.To explore appropriate design of wild herbaceous plants,this paper incorporates different contextual circumstances and design variables in landscape preference research through photomontage simulations,and gives some design suggestions based on the research conclusions.The study demonstrates that the public mostly welcome wild herbaceous plants in parks with a fcw concerns,and contextual circumstances plus design variances greatly impact the public's preference.A series of application suggestions including:1) wild herbaceous plants can be freely introduced into dynamic places;2) flowery species planted densely is a better choice;3) more species can be combined to achieve multifunctional landscapes;4) the height of wild herbaceous plants should better be kept under 30cm after flowering seasons;5) natural education particularly for children should be enhanced.

Abstract:Hemerocallis L. possesses abundant germplasm resources and holds significant value in terms of ornamental, edible, and medicinal aspects. However, the quality characteristics vary significantly depending on different varieties. Selection of a high-quality variety with a characteristic aroma can increase the economic value of Hemerocallis flowers. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is an effective decision-making method for comparing and evaluating multiple characteristic dimensions. By applying AHP, the aromatic character of 60 varieties of Hemerocallis flowers were analyzed and evaluated in the present study. Headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) was employed to identify volatile components in Hemerocallis flowers. Thirteen volatile components were found to contribute to the aroma of Hemerocallis flowers, which helps in assessing their potential applications in essential oil, aromatherapy, and medical treatment. These components include 2-phenylethanol, geraniol, linalool, nonanal, decanal, (E)-β-ocimene, α-farnesene, indole, nerolidol, 3-furanmethanol, 3-carene, benzaldehyde and benzenemethanol. The varieties with better aromatic potential can be selected from a large amount of data using an AHP model. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of the aroma components in Hemerocallis flowers, offers guidance for breeding, and enhances the economic value of Hemerocallis flowers.

Abstract:China is rich in Spiraea resources about 70 species distribute and whose distribution is widely. The plant resources of Spiraea not only have excellent ornamental value, but also some of them also have cultivation advantages for example, adaptation to cold climate in the North, they are one of the hard-won flower shrubs in northern landscaping, but their resources and application have not been paid much attention. This paper summarized the distribution of Spiraea species and its varieties in China, some familiar species,cultivars, their characters and application in landscaping were introduced, and some fine species were recommended, the prospect of landscaping application was also presented finally. Compared the introduction and application of Spiraea plants with England, America and Germany etc., the intensive study and extensive utilization of Spiraea plant resources should be strengthened urgently in China.
