Abstract:in the present age of consumption and information, the existing ways of architectures and cities have had a considerable change, this article summarizes the characteristic of contemporary architectures and cities effected by new social environment as "rupture": which includes "rupture" of time and space, "rupture" between architectures and cities and "rupture" between skin and interior of building. taking the theory of Rem Koolhaas, such as "Hyper-Building" and "Generic City", and the theory of Toyo Ito, such as "Temporary Building" and "Flowing Skin" for example, it explores the new way in which architectures and cities exist in the context of "rupture".

Abstract:This paper presents a summary of the author's recent work on the configuration of spatial structures. To better satisfy architecture and engineering requirements, the paper introduces a technique of reconstructing freestyle 3D objects with grid space structures. With this technique, irregular and complex configurations can be easily modelled, which has a great potential in modelling of sculptures and bionic structures. Then several new types of deployable structures, which are based on linkage mechanisms including Bricard linkages and double chain linkages, are proposed. The kinetic behaviour of these deployable structures is investigated by geometrical analysis. And their possible applications in retractable roofs are also explored. Meanwhile, the paper proposes a practical application of structures with changeable configurations – a novelty erection technology based on expandable mechanisms. Finally, the paper presents some new advances in form-finding of tensegrity structures and shape control of tensegrity structures.

Abstract:There are great differences between architectural design and structural design in the aspects of thinking mode and design objective. The design of practical projects always develops along with compromise between the two professions. This working pattern is not considered as an effective way for structures in taking its good effects in architectural design, and may probably lead to waste. Penetration of contemporary digital technologies in architectural industry makes it possible for the architectural and structural design to be integrated on the digital platform. In the 2014 Tsinghua parametric design workshop, forms of folding plate structure are explored along with the teaching process of Grasshopper. Form generation and structural simulation are carried out on the Grasshopper platform. Laser cutting and 3D printing technologies are also employed in elements fabrication. This article introduces the technical issues and thinking related to this experimental project.

Abstract:How to deconstruct traditional culture and use it in contemporary practices has become one of the key problems in modern architecture, as modernism proved its failure in including human lifestyle in the building, and lack of consideration of how local culture portrays people and whether it should be included in design. regions with rich traditional cultures face modern urban development and architectural revolution. This paper focuses on how local Japanese architect has deconstructed traditional culture and used it in their contemporary architectural practice, by analyzing works and interviews from Ando Tadao and Kuma Kengo with their different approach in their architectural practice through philosophical and visual deconstruction of Japanese culture. This paper has concluded some key aspect in the field of using traditional Japanese element in modern architecture reviewed how their approaches has been viewed and commented on, and provided some paths that could be used in future architects when comes to projects that include some aspect of traditional local culture.

Abstract:Cultural communication and art heritage represent a repository of highly condensed information of past time that depends not only on the expansion of emerging digital media but also on the transformation of language and knowledge. In this course, students try to extract single elements from the traditional Chinese cultural patterns and redesign them, then combine them into existing buildings, attempting to balance the coherence, heterogeneity of space, and the uniqueness of projects. It provides favorable conditions in the new era for the traditional patterns to be re-activated. It is a combination of technology and art. The purpose of this course is not to discover new theories or new technologies but to provide morphological possibilities under the existing digital techniques in cultural symbols. We try to build new ideas and innovative digital expressions for traditional Chinese patterns, realize the collision of culture and technology from experimental trials on the existing architectures in other unimagined forms. It is not only the research reproduction of traditional patterns but also brings new vitality and fresh ideas for architecture design.

Abstract:The idea of structural art has gained an increase in interest due to the pioneering book by David Billington in 1983. With this, a paradigm shift is emerging with the belief that structural engineers can become artists in the design process by cooperatively integrating three tenets: economy, efficiency, and elegance. The objective of this up-to-date review is to present a broad perspective of structural art during the past three decades (1983-2013). Historical engineering projects and the stories of their structural engineers are discussed to identify the key conditions that have contributed to various works of structural art.
