Abstract:This paper aims to discuss the relation between myth, legend and history. It revises and reappraises Taylor's concept of "primitive culture" and therefore, discovers theoretically a gateway from myth, legend to history. The morphological diversity of myth and legend does not exclude their common elements that are basic for the reconstruction of the preliterate history. In order to utilize these elements in historical study, we put forward a model of exploring and interpreting myth and legend. In this model, myth and legend from various ancient civilizations are distributed into a layered framework, with the "real history" signifying the hard core, and the "authenticity" measuring the distance between myth, legend and historical truth. Historical study in this aspect should integrate the theories and approaches of sociology, anthropology, classical studies, archeology, astronomy, and etc. since historically real elements which are included in myth and legend have different layers and characteristics,
