Abstract:By means of the natural history of and with as a theme to broach, we can think metaphysical questions in double senses: The one kind is the epistemological metaphysics, based on the perceptual-rational-differentiate; it is related with the Zero as vacancy between numbers. Another kind is genetic metaphysics, based on the source-evolution-differentiate, it is related with the zero between negative and positive number. In this respect the zero represents a domain of metaphysic: We may infinitely approach it, but never achieve actually. The zero is polymerization-spot of all relations, also the starting-point of all relations, but it self does not have any determinable content. This is the essence of zero, also the essence of all metaphysic.

Abstract:Human beings are embodied beings whose ontological characteristics are that they depend on the physical bodies, and at the same time their subjectivity are ontologically irreducible. Therefore, how to coherently and completely explain and understand human beings becomes a big problem in the philosophy of mind. If we adhere to the coherency of the basic positions of modern world view, there would have been the completeness in the explanation and understanding of consciousness in the sense of the hard problem. Roughly, there are three approaches to the situation of the completeness. However, because of a fundamental limitation, i.e. it is impossible to there be epistemologically an equivalent transformation between the two kinds of ontological forms (being and non-being), all the three approaches fail to realize the desire of both coherency and completeness in principle. The result is epistemologically pessimistic, but on the other hand, it is positive, because it indicates that individual experiences are unique.

Abstract:A metaphysics of aesthetics aims for an understanding of the meaning of life and a pursuit of spiritual liberty, an idyllic state where truth, goodness and beauty are in harmony.It is a special form of man′s ultimate concerns.There are three thought paths in a metaphysics of aesthetics in the tradition of eastern and western aesthetic wisdom, namely, external transcendence, internal transcendence and transcendence of the here and now.Religion is the supreme cultural form of im-mortality and spiritual transcendence.Modern Chinese metaphysics of aesthetics manifests a tension between new and old el-ements characteristic of a transitional period in society and culture.

Abstract:In the context of the problem of the "fundamental differences" between Chinese and Western philosophy, it is essential to investigate the basic system on which the entirety of Western philosophy operates and the unique way it has developed within this system, so that concrete observation can help deepen understanding. The observation involves the issues of what metaphysics is; "transcendence"; the fourfold distinction in the history of Western metaphysics; Christianity as Platonism; and the "Onto-Theo-Logik" mechanism in metaphysics. In a general sense, there can be no metaphysics where there is no division or opposition between the supersensuous and the sensory worlds. Where the "Onto-Theo-Logik" mechanism of Western metaphysics fails to work or has no chance of working, the field is one in which Chinese philosophy should make active moves and undertake development. The divisions arising from this context essentially mark the fundamental difference between Chinese and Western philosophy. When it comes down to it, it is these differences that determine the differences in the nature, structure, and direction of Chinese and Western philosophy.
Metaphysics or Xing(er) shangxue ? A western philosophical term in modern China

Abstract:One of the most notable features of modern Chinese scholarship is the reinterpretation of traditional Chinese learning in terms of Western academic and philosophical categories. However, this article will argue that there also exists a corresponding reverse process to which not enough attention has been paid by scholars of modern Chinese studies. This reverse process consists of reinterpreting Western philosophical concepts in terms of traditional Chinese categories and concepts. In fact, these two processes have occurred simultaneously and can in effect be seen as two sides of the same coin. What has happened is that, on the one hand, modern Chinese scholars have been trying to reinterpret traditional Chinese thought with Western categories and concepts, while on the other hand they are interpreting and therefore misunderstanding the meaning of Western categories and concepts by confounding them with conceptions from Chinese intellectual traditions. It is the interweaving of these two processes that becomes characteristic of modern Chinese scholarship. By examining how modern Chinese scholars have interpreted the meaning of "metaphysics" as a Western philosophical term, this article will try to show how the meaning of this Western term has been to a large degree shaped by traditional Chinese thinking, especially by that of neo-Confucians.

Frontiers of Philosophy in China

Abstract:There are two tendencies in the arguments of the legitimacy of metaphysics in ancient China: the tendency to argue that there was no metaphysics in ancient China and the tendency to argue that ancient Chinese metaphysics is totally different from that of the West. In this article, the author counters these tendencies and argues that Chinese and western metaphysics both originated from a dynamic cosmology and shared objects of investigation and characteristics of thinking in terms of Becoming. However, in their later development, due to the difference in the problems of their focus, traditions of "moral metaphysics" and "(natural) metaphysics of Being" were formed in China and in the West, respectively. The author also explores the reasons for the rise of modern science in the West and its lack of progress in China.

Abstract:Form related to mathematics,physics,logic,metaphysics from the very beginning,characterizing by its ambiguity and a single phrase with abundant meanings.The essential attributes of form,for this reason,are not unitary and constant.It is impossible to give form a normative definition by genus and difference with precise intention and extension.The nature of form owned a remote source in logic,which has purely formal characteristics.Logic aims at pursuing universal truth about the understandable and formal truth concerning the world of reason.Form,logic,reason,mathematics,can not be regarded only as thinking medium,or scientific method,they are,in fact,propping up,regulating crucial concepts,propositions,features and topics in the field of metaphysics and epistemology.The exact determination of form should be fixed on either meta-category or non meta-category because of its specific complexity,ambiguity and flexibility.Form constituted one of perennial factors that has molded and displayed spiritual qualities of Western culture such as idea of two worlds,doctrine of essence,dichotomy of object and subject,causal determinism,exact analysis,etc..

Abstract:The inquiry of what is metaphysics actually focuses on the way of thinking of metaphysics. In the history of western metaphysics, there are two kinds of thinking of metaphysics: dichotomy thinking and non-dichotomy one. Kant and Heidegger were prominent masters respectively. According to his dichotomy, Kant resolved the metaphysics question that how "one as all" is possible; while by his non-dichotomy, Heidegger thought about the question that how "all as one" is possible. However, middle doctrine deals with traditional metaphysics from perspectives of dichotomy and non-dichotomy. In such sense, middle doctrine is the integration of metaphysics of Kant and Heidegger.

Abstract:The knowledge and understanding of Kant's doctrine of right must be based on the comprehensive survey of his whole critical philosophical system.Firstly,according to Kantian transcendental philosophy,this article attempts to expound the metaphysical foundation of his concept of right,and then offer arguments for the universal validity of right through answering the question of how the synthetic judgment as a priori is possible,and finally according to the idea of transcendental deduction of the categories,discusses the deducing process of the right concept,so as to grasp the essence of Kant's concept of right in the comprehensive perspective of his critical philosophy.

Abstract:The term “human nature” originates from the ancient Greek word ■, referring to the whole process of growth with connection to the ancient Greek cosmology in earlier period. However, since 17 th century, this term has acquired several new senses such as（1） the common features of all human being;（2） given rather than man-made;（3） non-changeable by human will. These senses are quite closed to the basic senses of the term renxing in ancient Chinese texts. Since Kant defined the term “human nature” on basis of the distinction between nature and freedom, between experience and transcendence as well as between phenomenon and essence, his conception of human nature has shaped the usage of this term in the West to a large degree after him. There are varieties of schools of human nature in the West, including the classic metaphysical theories, the theory about the state of nature, the Christian theories of human being, modern/contemporary philosophy, the theories of human nature in modern social/natural sciences（such as sociology, psychology, behavior science, linguistics, biology, etc.）. The major topics/disputes of human nature in the West might be the discussions about（1） empirical or transcendental dimensions;（2） if or not human nature exists;（3） if or not human nature is changeable;（4） if or not human nature is good;（5） the essential parts of human nature. While there are many similarities between Chinese and Western theories of human nature（for example, the human nature is empirical or transcendental）, the biggest differences might be seen by the following phenomena: the traditional Chinese theory of human nature takes the moral lives as its major topic and focuses on if human nature is good or not; however, the Western theories of human nature tend to take the objective knowledge of human nature as its major pursuit, the good-evil problem of human nature has not been the central topic in the West except in Christianity, theory of the state of nature as well as in Kant’s moral philosophy.

Abstract:According to linguistic philosophy,the use and reference of language are not certain.It is true of the concepts of Western philosophy,the references of which are also changeable in different contexts.They never have fixed references.Language and concepts are not the product of mind,but of history.It is so much so that the sense of a proper noun also comes,not from arbitrary convention,but from history,even much more for philosophical concepts.The concept is not universal abstract noun.Its function is not to denote something simply,but to define the essence of things.The concepts of Western philosophy are permeated with its specific characteristics.Only by distinguishing the specific characteristics of the Western philosophical concepts which are universally used,can we make use of them correctly without obstructing the specific characteristics of Chinese Philosophy.

Abstract:This essay seeks to demonstrate the metaphysical commensurability between Chinese and Western philosophy through a comparative study of the metaphysics of the mind as expounded by René Descartes and Wang Yangming. This commensurability, I suggest, brings to light a shared but hitherto neglected philosophical early modernity registered in the metaphysical reorientation from Nature or things towards the mind. The ontological primacy of the mind asserted by both Descartes and Yangming lies at the root of the epistemological and moral autonomy marking the modern subject that rose to prominence in Renaissance Europe and Ming China. The parallel philosophical early modernity manifested in Cartesian and Yangming's metaphysics of the mind, I propose, calls into doubt the alleged lack of metaphysics in Chinese philosophy.

Abstract:Metaphysics or the knowledge of knowledge itself is one of the main threads in the history of philosophy.Metaphysics is distinguished from “adding word” philosophy in that the latter is knowledge related to what the added words express.The essence of the distinction here is that metaphysics deals with what is a priori,while the study of adding word philosophies is empirical.Metaphysical inquiry always revolves around sentences,for knowledge is expressed in language,and sentences are the basic unit for the expression of knowledge.Sentences involve three aspects:at the linguistic level,the basic sentence pattern is “S is P”;at the level of sense,it is what language expresses;and at the reference level,the core concept is “truth.” Metaphysical inquiry always revolves around “being” and “truth,” and concerns the three levels above.The third level in particular reveals the conditions for the truth of a sentence,and helps explain the first two levels.We need to grasp the essence and characteristics of metaphysics and develop the study of metaphysics as a means of advancing philosophical research.
