Abstract:This work studies the identification of errors-in-variables (EIV) systems. An asymptotic method (ASYM) is developed for the EIV system. The ASYM is to start with a high order model estimation and then to perform a frequency domain weighted model reduction. Firstly when applying the high order ARX (autoregressive with external input) model estimation procedure, a consistent ARX model estimation method of EIV systems is applied. The asymptotic variance expression of the estimated high order ARX model is derivated which forms the basis of the ASYM. Simulations are used to illustrate the performance of the ASYM for EIV systems.

Abstract:Dynamic equivalent can reduce the computing effort and manifest the major characteristics. By reason of needing to know system structure and parameters of the equivalent system, coherency method and mode method are mainly used for off-line dynamic equivalent. Therefore identification method is needed for on-line equivalent. In modern power systems, more and more areas are interconnected. It is important to study the identification of multi areas equivalent. For the power systems interconnected with three sub-systems, this paper gives an equivalent model, analyses the identifiability of the model, and uses an evolutionary strategy algorithm for the parameter estimation. It is shown by the case studies of a 36-bus system that the model and the parameter estimation are valid.

Abstract:Dynamic equivalent (DE) can reduce the computing effort and manifest the main characteristics. Two DE models are developed and their identifiability is studied. The results show that some parameters of the equivalent model are unidentifiable if only using the data of steady state before and during disturbance, but if the information of the steady state after disturbance is taken into account in addition, all the parameters will be identifiable.

Abstract:Data-driven equation identification for dynamical systems has achieved great progress, which for static systems, however, has not kept pace. Unlike dynamical systems, static systems are time invariant, so we cannot capture discrete data along the time stream, which requires identifying governing equations only from scarce data. This work is devoted to this topic, building a data-driven method for extracting the differential-variational equations that govern static behaviors only from scarce, noisy data of responses, loads, as well as the values of system attributes if available. Compared to the differential framework typically adopted in equation identification, the differential-variational framework, due to its spatial integration and variation arbitrariness, brings some advantages, such as high robustness to data noise and low requirements on data amounts. The application, efficacy, and all the aforementioned advantages of this method are demonstrated by four numerical examples, including three continuous systems and one discrete system.

Abstract:The so-called asymptotic theory of Ljung (1985) gives an error description of identified black-box model in the frequency domain. Based on the theory the asymptotic method of identification has been developed and applied successively in industrial MPC control and PID tuning. In this work, new results that extend the asymptotic theory and method will be presented: (1) an asymptotically globally convergent Box-Jenkins model estimation algorithm; (2) errors-in-variables model identification; and (3) accurate model identification using over-sampling scheme.
Identifiability and Identification of Switching Dynamical Networks: A Data-Based Approach

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the identifiability and identification problem of switching (directed) dynamical networks modeled by switched linear dynamical systems. Switching signals governing the active subsystem (mode) are frequently changing, which brings challenges to exact reconstruction of network sequences, since the state trajectory is generated by a number of subsystems at different time periods. By analyzing unobservable subspace associated with each subsystem, we first establish necessary and/or sufficient conditions for identifiability of switching dynamical networks under different level of knowledge on the switching signal. Building on this, a sufficient identification condition is developed leveraging coupled Lyapunov-transpose matrix equations constructed by state trajectories with properly designed time offsets, which allows us to design a data-based approach that can exactly recover the whole network sequence, even if the switching signal is unknown a priori . More importantly, we develop sharper conditions for both identifiability and identification when there is certain prior knowledge available on networks. Numerical experiments on switching consensus networks and sparse networks are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical findings.

Abstract:We consider the identifiability and identification problem of a dynamical network modeled by a switched linear dynamical system governed by a sequence of switchings. We aim at exactly reconstructing the network sequence along with the switching signal from the state trajectories of all nodes. The identification of a switching dynamical network is more challenging than that of a time-invariant dynamical network in that the data is generated by a number of different subsystems at different periods. By observability conditions, we first establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the identifiability of switching dynamical networks. Building on this, a sufficient identification condition is developed leveraging coupled Lyapunov-transpose matrix equations, which allows us to design a new algorithm that can exactly recover the whole network sequence, even if the switching signal is completely unknown a prior. Finally, a numerical example is provided to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:Three linear discrete-time identification methods are compared in this work. First, comparing criteria are proposed from an application viewpoint. Then the methods, namely, a subspace method, the prediction error method family and an asymptotic method are briefly introduced. All the methods are used to identify two multi variable industrial processes. The comparison is made using the criteria and based on the performances of the methods for the real life data. The purpose of this work is to make some contribution in unifying the field of identification and in bridging the gap between theory and application.

Abstract:To overcome the long test time and big error in single variable open loop step test method,a novel identification method based on asymptotic theory(ASYM) is presented.Fundamental problems,such as test signal design for control,model structure selection,model order and parameter estimation,are solved in a systematic manner.Using horizontally shift method,the longer period pseudo random binary sequence(PRBS) is horizontally shifted several times in order to get the PRBS signals that any of the two PRBS signals are non-correlation for multivariable test signal.The high order ARX model is choosed as parameter model,output error model is used to estimate the parameter of reduced model.The order selection for reduced model is decided by MDL(minimum description length) criterion.The simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce test time,and decrease disturbance to the equipment during the test period.It can get better results comparing with conventional identification method.

Abstract:Using instrumental variable methods to estimate the parameters of dynamic errors-in-variables systems with a periodic input signal is the focus in this paper. How to choose suitable instrumental variable vectors is the key point. Two variants are proposed; both of them can generate consistent estimates. An analysis shows that the best accuracy is achieved by using a specific overdetermined instrumental variable vector. Numerical illustrations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed Extended IV method for both white and colored measurement noise. It is superior to alternative methods under low signal to noise ratios.

Abstract:Switched systems, i.e., systems changing the parameter values (even structural forms) abruptly and randomly at arbitrary instants, have been extensively utilized in many fields of modern industries. Rapid identification of switched systems, i.e., capturing all the changing instants and reconstructing the mathematical models rapidly, is of great significance for behavior prediction, performance evaluation and possible control, but is restricted by small data amount available. Here, the rapid identification problem is successfully solved by a data-driven method in variational framework. The data-driven method only requires a small amount of data due to the compact form of the variational description, and is robust to data noise due to the holistic viewpoint. Two numerical examples, i.e., Duffing oscillator and van der Pol system (as two representative systems in nonlinear dynamics), are adopted to illustrate its application, efficiency and robustness to noise.

Abstract:Dynamic errors-in-variables (EIV) systems, in which both the output and the input variables are corrupted by noises, are widely used in signal processing, communications, and control engineering. Although a number of different methods for identifying dynamic EIV systems have been proposed, the theoretical analysis of their properties has always been a difficult problem. This paper presents the convergence analysis of an adaptive EIV identification algorithm with no input restrictions. The methods of analysis currently available in literature often assume the input signals to be AR or ARMA process and persistent excitation. This restriction is removed for attenuating excitation in this paper. The convergence rate is derived and it is shown that the adaptive estimation can converge fast to the true system parameters values. Numerical simulations is conducted to demonstrate the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Identification of systems with very slowly and irregularly sampled output data is considered. While the input is sampled uniformly and frequently enough, the output sampling time is assumed very long, say, much longer than the dominant time constants. The output sampling may be irregular. Dual-rate system with slow output samples is a special case of the problem studied here. Model structures for the identification of the fast rate models will be proposed. Output error method is proposed and motivated for parameter estimation. Consistence of the estimate is established and covariance expression of the parameters is derived. Simulation studies will be used to illustrate the method. The developed identification method can also be used in other fields where measurement delay is a major problem.

Abstract:This paper concerns the identification problem of scalar errors-in-variables (EIV) systems with general nonlinear output observations and ARMA observation noises. Under independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian inputs with unknown variance, recursive algorithms for estimating the parameters of the EIV systems are presented. For general nonlinear observations, conditions on the system are imposed to guarantee the almost sure convergence of the estimates. A simulation example is included to justify the theoretical results.

Abstract:The errors–in–variables framework concerns static or dynamic systems whose input and output variables are affected by additive noise. Several estimation methods have been proposed for identifying dynamic errors–in–variables models. One of the more promising approaches is the so–called Frisch scheme. This paper decribes three different estimation criteria within the Frisch context and compares their estimation accuracy on the basis of the asymptotic covariance matrices of the estimates. Some numerical examples support well the theoretical results.

Some fatal errors of the well-known Frisch Scheme for EIV identification have been presented, and on the basis of it an improved recursive algorithm is proposed. Abstract:Data rectification can be classified into two parts: data reconciliation, gross error detection and identification. Gross error detection and identification is the bottleneck of data rectification. For bias type of gross error, existing methods cannot deal with the case effectively that there are multiple gross errors in measurements. In order to address the problem, the concept of gross error identifiability of process is proposed. And the identifiable condition of gross errors is derived. An identification approach based on parameter estimation is proposed. The identification results show that the method can identify multiple gross errors existing in the measurements accurately.

Abstract:This paper shows that the adaptive output error identifier for linear time–invariant continuous–time systems proposed by (Betser and Zeheb [1995]) is robust vis–à–vis measurement noise. More precisely, it is proven that the map from the noise to the estimation error is –stable—provided a tuning parameter is chosen sufficiently large. A procedure to determine the required minimal value of this parameter is also given. If the noise is exponentially vanishing, asymptotic convergence to zero of the prediction error is achieved. Instrument for the establishment of the results is a suitable decomposition of the error system equations that allows us to strengthen—to strict—the well-known passivity property of the identifier. The estimator does not require fast adaptation, a dead-zone, nor the knowledge of an upperbound on the noise magnitude, which is an essential requirement to prove stability of standard output error identifiers. To robustify the estimator with respect to non–square integrable (but bounded) noises a prediction error-dependent leakage term is added in the integral adaptation. A simulated example, which is unstable for the equation error identifier and the output error identifier of (Betser and Zeheb [1995]), is used to illustrate the noise insensitivity property of the new scheme.
