Abstract:With regard to the modulation types of IR-UWB,analytical analysis on BER performance is presented in this paper.Conclusions are made that,compared to PPM,PAM can provide 3dB gain in BER performance.The key point to promote UWB BER performance is to make full use of energy within FCC mask.

Abstract:Impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) is a radio technology transmitting information over a broad bandwidth which can take in narrowband signals from the existing wireless systems and have them as narrowband interference (NBI). The interference will definitely degrade the system performance. For better communication of Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs), it is important to evaluate the performance of the system properly. In this paper, bit error rate (BER) and packet error rate (PER) are used to evaluate the performance of the IEEE 802.15.6 standard-based IR-UWB transmission systems in both additive white Gaussian noise and CM4 multipath channels with and without the NBIs respectively. And it is the first time to use variance-detection-based receivers in the IEEE 802.15.6 standard-based systems. Simulation results show that comparing with conventional energy-detection-based receivers, the variance-detection-based receivers have better interference tolerance in the IEEE 802.15.6 IR-UWB systems.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental comparison among the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) and orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) waveforms in a terahertz photonic-wireless point-to-point communication system operating at 300GHz. Our results show that, all waveforms have similar peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), the OTFS and OTFS waveforms can achieve comparable bit error rate (BER) performance, while the FBMC waveform outperforms in terms of the out-of-band decay at the cost of non-orthogonality between subcarriers, leading to the deterioration of BER performance at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region.

Abstract:To analyze the impulse radio ultra-wideband(IR-UWB) system performance in multipath environment, a system model with coherent demodulation in the presence of inter-symbol interference, intra-symbol multipath interference and additive white Gaussian noise is proposed, and the bit error rate(BER) expression is obtained through studying the multipath channel models provided by IEEE 802.15.3a group. To evaluate the accuracy of the expression, its computation result is compared with computer simulation, which shows the expression can match the simulation well. With the expression, the maximum transmission data rate and bandwidth efficiency using Gaussian second derivative function pulses with different durations are analyzed, and the result shows that with the pulse duration shortened the maximum transmission data rate increases obviously while the bandwidth efficiency almost has no change. All these conclusions can be applied to the design of UWB system.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate performance comparison between Impulse-Radio Ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) and Direct Sequence UWB (DS-UWB) in realistic systems, where Matched-Filter (MF) receivers have finite quantization resolution. Bit-Error-Rate (BER) performance of a high-resolution MF receiver for IR-UWB and DS-UWB is analyzed and compared under typical UWB dispersive channels. Also, performance of a 1-bit MF receiver for IR-UWB and DS-UWB is analyzed and compared under Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel. The analysis results provide insight into general cases that B-bit MF receivers are used. Simulations of B-bit MF receivers are performed under both AWGN channel and typical UWB dispersive channel. The results show IR-UWB outperforms DS-UWB with finite-resolution MF receivers, and the performance superiority is more significant as quantization resolution is lower.

Abstract:Multi-band Ultra-Wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UWB-OFDM) system is an ideal access solution for high data rate, short range WPANs physical layer and it has broad application prospect. The bit error rate (BER) performance between two different modulation techniques was studied in AWGN and IEEE 802.15.3a UWB multi-path channel model, and the effect on multi-band UWB-OFDM system performance was analyzed by adding the guard interval. Simulation results show that QPSK modulation performs much better than 16QAM modulation.

Abstract:This paper examines the robustness of anti-interference Ultra-Wide-Band UWB-OFDM (AI-UWB) systems in presence of narrow-band interference. It analyzes the bit error rate performance of the systems in both the single-user and multi-user modes, and compares its robustness in different code matrixes. By encoding transmitted symbols and spreading their power over all sub-bands, AI-UWB systems can make full use of the frequency diversity across the sub-bands and have more robustness to the narrowband interference. Simulating results show that different codes have almost the same robustness to the narrowband interference. The encoding and spreading could suppress the narrowband interference effectively. Compared with the IS-UWB systems, our approach has more than 5 dB interference margin.

Abstract:This paper considers the practical implementation of low-resolution digital receivers in impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) communication systems for low complexity and low power consumption. The performance of 1-bit digital receivers is investigated. The maximum mutual information per sample is derived and the structure of the maximum likelihood receiver is analyzed. The bit error rate performances under different modulation schemes are also studied. The analysis demonstrates that the signal to noise ratio degradation for 1-bit receivers in multi-path UWB channel is only 1.96 dB. The simulation is in good agreement with our analytical derivations.

Abstract:This paper presents a performance comparison of impulse radio ultra wideband (IR-UWB) and multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) for multi-user wireless communication systems. Focusing on the analysis of system performance affected by multi-user interference (MUI) over general additive white Gaussion noise (AWGN) channel, we run a complete system simulation for direct sequence pulse amplitude modulation (DS-PAM), time hopping pulse position modulation(TH-PPM) and MB-OFDM UWB systems. Simulation results show that DS-PAM performs much better than TH-PPM and multi carrier OFDM (MC-OFDM).

Abstract:The optimum receiver performance of a hybrid pulse phase and position modulation(PAPM) over ultra-wideband(UWB) indoor fading channel model is analyzed.In the PAPM UWB system,input data was modulated onto both the pulse phases and the pulse positions.The receiver employed a RAKE to combine multipath energy by use of the mixed raster content(MRC) algorithm to realize the optimum receiver.The closed-form error rate expressions of the system in indoor fading channels were determined,and thus the limited performance of the PAPM UWB system employing the RAKE receiver was analyzed.Calculation results shows that this PAPM modulation doubles the communication rate while holding the BER performance invariable.

Abstract:To analyze the time-hopping(TH) impulse radio ultra wideband(UWB) transmission performance in the presence of multipath environment,a model for bit error rate(BER) analysis of UWB systems with coherent demodulation in the presence of multipath interference,multiple access interference and additive Gaussian white noise was proposed by analyzing the statistics of mulitpath channel models defined by the IEEE 802.15.3a Task Group.By exploiting the property of Poisson path arrivals,the exact BER formulation was derived utilizing the theory of probability.In order to verify this formulation,the calculated result was compared with those by computer simulation and by Caussian approximate approach in different channel models.The comparison results show that the method proposed matches computer simulations better than Caussian approximate approach and can readily be applied to the perfor-mance evaluation and system design of realistic channel models.

Abstract:Bit error rate (BER) performance of impulse radio Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems in the presence of intrasymbol interference, inter-symbol interference, multiuser interference and addictive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is presented in this paper. By analyzing the indoor office LOS channel model defined by IEEE 802.15.4a Task Group and deducing the variance for intra-symbol interference (IASI), inter-symbol interference (ISI) and multiuser interference (MUI), the system BER expression is obtained and verified by MATLAB simulations. Through comparing the simulation results with and without intra-symbol interference, the conclusion that intra-symbol interference cannot be neglected is drawn-moreover, such interference will significantly decrease performance of UWB based wireless sensor networks (WSN). Then, the BER performance of UWB systems in multiuser environment is also analyzed and analysis results show that multiuser interference will further worsen the transmission performance of UWB systems.

Capacity of M-ary PAM Impulse Radio with Various Derivatives of Gaussian Pulse Subject to FCC Spectral Masks

Abstract:Ultra wideband pulse, which is the essential component of UWB impulse radio, is widely adopted as the derivative of Gaussian pulse due to the relatively low generation complexity. This paper makes an overall analysis on the capacity of M-ary PAM impulse radio employing derivatives of Gaussian pulse up to tenth order with pulse width from 0.1 ns to 1 ns subject to FCC indoor and outdoor spectral masks respectively. For each pulse, the maximum transmission power subject to FCC spectral masks is first calculated, then link budget is made to estimate the capacity in terms of the maximum transmission range corresponding to prescribed signal to noise ratio, data rate and receiver bandwidth, based on which the influence of modulation scheme, receiver bandwidth, and pulse parameters on the capacity is analyzed. The presented results can facilitate system designers to enhance the capacity of M-ary PAM impulse radio subject to FCC spectral masks.

Abstract:The multiple access performance of the single-user correlation receiver for ultra wideband time hopping bipolar modulation impulse radio is analyzed in terms of the signal noise ratio and the bit error rate from spectrum point of view. First, the closed form expression for the signal power spectral density is derived, based on which the closed from expressions for the signal noise ratio and the bit error rate are also derived. According to those expressions, the signal parameters design guides are presented in a straightforward manner to improve the multiaccess performance. Simulations demonstrate the theoretical analysis, and show the influence of signal parameters on the multiaccess performance.

Abstract:To analyze the impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) system performance, a system model with coherent demodulation is proposed in the presence of inter-symbol interference, intra-symbol multipath interference and multiuser interference. Then through analyzing and calculating the variances of these three interferences respectively, the bit error rate (BER) formulation is obtained and verified in comparison with computer simulations. From the BER formulation, the system throughput, expressed as the product of transmission data rate and user number, is deduced when considering system BER requirement, and then the tendency of system throughout is analyzed.

Abstract:An ultra wideband (UWB) transmitted reference (TR) system that allows inter-pulse interference (IPI) was recently proposed. It relaxes a restrictive requirement that the reference pulse has to be well separated from the data-modulated pulse as in a conventional TR system. With that scheme, data rate is substantially increased, especially in a long multipath channel, and better detection performance of the receiver is achieved even if IPI is present in the system. For low cost and high flexibility, this paper considers practical digital implementation of the receiver. Impact of using a low resolution analog-to-digital converter is investigated. Joint performance of template estimation and symbol detection is also studied.

Abstract:The effects on BER performance of selecting antennas and templates are investigated in pulsed UWB wireless communication systems. The transmit and receive antennas are regarded as a system. The UWB system is characterized in the time and frequency domains, and the underlying relationships between BER, SNR, S-parameters and the template are revealed. The study has shown that when an antenna system has a high transmission efficiency and a template with high fidelity to the received pulse is chosen at the receiver, SNR increases so that BER decreases.
Performance analysis of multiuser UWB systems under imperfect power control

Abstract:In ultra-wideband (UWB) system, it is difficult to realize the ideal power control by using existing hardwires, which degrades the performance of UWB systems. Thus a model for the analysis on the performance of UWB system under imperfect power control is proposed, and the average bit error rate (BER) of the UWB systems is obtained. Moreover, the average BER under imperfect and perfect power control is compared. Results show that the difference between these two systems concerning the average of probability error increases with the increase of the transmission attenuation, the number of users as well as the transmission data rate. For each system parameter, the upper bound of transmission data rate decreases with the increasing number of users, and the decreasing rate gets lower and lower.

Abstract:This paper derives the closed form expression for the interference power of narrowband jamming signal on time - hopping ultra-wide bandwidth system with binary pulse position modulation, assuming the jamming signal as a continuous wide sense stationary zero mean random process and the time hopping codes as a pseudorandom sequence. When the bandwidth of the jamming signal is much smaller than the data rate of UWB system, the approximate expression is presented, based on which some design guides for UWB signal parameters selection are given to reduce the interference power when the jamming signal power and the UWB pulse are fixed. Simulations demonstrate all of the analysis. © 2003 IEEE.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the frequency-hopping orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system known as Multiband OFDM for high-rate wireless personal area networks (WPANs) based on ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission. Besides considering the standard, we also propose and study system performance enhancements through the application of Turbo and Repeat-Accumulate (RA) codes, as well as OFDM bit-loading. Our methodology consists of (a) a study of the channel model developed under IEEE 802.15 for UWB from a frequency-domain perspective suited for OFDM transmission, (b) development and quantification of appropriate information-theoretic performance measures, (c) comparison of these measures with simulation results for the Multiband OFDM standard proposal as well as our proposed extensions, and (d) the consideration of the influence of practical, imperfect channel estimation on the performance. We find that the current Multiband OFDM standard sufficiently exploits the frequency selectivity of the UWB channel, and that the system performs in the vicinity of the channel cutoff rate. Turbo codes and a reduced-complexity clustered bit-loading algorithm improve the system power efficiency by over 6 dB at a data rate of 480 Mbps.
