Sarrasine: From Lacan's "$◇a" to Roland Barthes's "S/Z"

Abstract:In S/Z,Roland Barthes tried to read productively Balzac's Sarrasine.This reading was filled heavily with a Lacanist tone.On the one hand,it exploited Lacan's fantasy formula—"$◇a"—to retranslate the formation of fantasy;on the other hand it applied Lacan's castration theory to the discussion of the effects of castration and its contagiousness,and "S/Z" is a formal expression of the effects.From Lacan's "$◇a" to Barthes's "S/Z",it is both a Lacanian reading on Sarrasine and a Lacanian rereading on S/Z.
