Abstract:Quantum confined materials have been extensively studied for photoluminescent applications. Due to intrinsic limitations of low biocompatibility and challenging modulation, the utilization of conventional inorganic quantum confined photoluminescent materials in bio-imaging and bio-machine interface faces critical restrictions. Here, we present aromatic cyclo-dipeptides that dimerize into quantum dots, which serve as building blocks to further self-assemble into quantum confined supramolecular structures with diverse morphologies and photoluminescence properties. Especially, the emission can be tuned from the visible region to the near-infrared region (420 nm to 820 nm) by modulating the self-assembly process. Moreover, no obvious cytotoxic effect is observed for these nanostructures, and their utilization for in vivo imaging and as phosphors for light-emitting diodes is demonstrated. The data reveal that the morphologies and optical properties of the aromatic cyclodipeptide self-assemblies can be tuned, making them potential candidates for supramolecular quantum confined materials providing biocompatible alternatives for broad biomedical and opto-electric applications.

Abstract:A pressure-filter-template approach was employed to prepare fluorescent nanotubes of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylicdianhydride (PTCDA) through covalent combination in the porous of alumina template based on the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images exhibited a tubular structure of the obtained samples. The wall thickness of the nanotubes is well controlled by varying the assembled cycle number, which is detected by UV-visible spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy confirmed the formation of covalent bonds between PEI and PTCDA in nanotubes.

Abstract:Phenylacetylene and 1-pentyne derivates containing aminated tetraphenylethene (TPE) units 1 and 2 are synthesized. The TPE-functionalized luminogens are nonemissive in dilute solutions but luminescent as solid aggregates, Showing H novel behavior of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The monomers are polymerized to their corresponding polymers P1 and P2 with an E conformation by organorhodium catalysts, although Rh-catalyzed polymerizations normally yield Z-rich polyacetylenes. Whereas P1 fluoresces faintly in THF, its light emission is enhanced by aggregation inaqueous media, exhibiting an aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) effect. Oil the other hand, P2 is AIE active: the emission of its nanoaggregates Suspended in 90% aqueous mixture is similar to 57-fold stronger than that Of its Solution in THF. A novel superamplification effect is observed in the emission quenching of P2 nanoaggregates by picric acid (PA): the quenching constant (K-SV) is nonlinearly increased with the quencher concentration and reaches a very high value in the high [PA] region (K-SV similar to 350000 M-1). P1 and P2 are transformed to conjugated polyelectrolytes P1(+) and P2+ via ionization by hydrochloric acid. P1+ readily hybridizes with carbon nanotubes, affording functionalized P1+/nanotube hybrids with good water miscibility. Emission of P2+ in aqueous buffer is boosted when it binds to bovine serum albumin (BSA), allowing the polymer to work as a sensitive bioprobe for BSA quantitation at ultralow protein concentration (0-0.6 ppm).

Abstract:The present study describes a flexible nanoplatform based on electrostatic assembly of conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (cMWNTs). It is demonstrated that the obtained nanocomposites inherit intrinsic optical properties of CPEs and characteristic Raman vibration modes of MWNTs, providing a fluorescence-Raman dual-imaging method for intracellular tracking and locating of MWNTs. We suggest that the cellular internalization of the CPE-cMWNT nanocomposites is a surface charge-dependent process. The strengths of this nanoplatform include satisfying biocompatibility, enhanced protein-repellent property, and ease of implementation, making it available for both in vitro and in vivo applications.

Abstract:Layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes is a well established approach to build composite multilayer assemblies. It is based on the electrostatic interaction between the consecutively deposited, oppositely charged species. [ 1 ] Template-synthetic chemistry based on a LBL deposition technique using a nanoporous membrane has attracted considerable interest in the past decade since it provides highly uniform nanotubes composed of a variety of materials. [ 2 ] Many elaborated hollow cylinders were reported, fabricated within vertically oriented pore arrays of an anodic alumina template. [ 3 ] Recently functionalized nanotubes have begun to attract enormous interest in biological applications, including biolabeling, bioseparation, biocatalysis, biodetection, and biomolecule delivery. [ 4 ] To image biomolecules with the help of their fl uorescence, many kinds of chromophores, [ 5 a,b ] quantum dots, [ 5 c,d ] fl uorescent proteins, [ 5 e,f ] or tailored macromolecular architectures [ 5 g ] have been reported as fl uorogenic labels. To combine nanotechnology, fl uorescence visualization, and biological application, we present herein novel fl uorescent nanotubes fabricated by LBL deposition of oppositely charged core–shell perylene derivatives. These nanotubes can serve as biosensors to detect DNA in a dual-response manner.

Abstract:Self-assembling cyclic peptide nanotubes (SPNs) have been extensively studied due to their potential applications in biology and material sciences. Cyclic ?-peptides, which have a larger conformational space, have received less attention than the cyclic a- and beta-peptides. The self-assembly of cyclic homo-?-tetrapeptide based on cis-3-aminocyclohexanecarboxylic acid (?-Ach) residues, which can be easily synthesized by a one-pot process is investigated. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and NMR analysis along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the cyclic homo-?-tetrapeptide, with a non-planar conformation, can self-assemble into nanotubes through hydrogen-bond-mediated parallel stacking. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments reveal the formation of bundles of nanotubes in CH2Cl2/hexane, but individual nanotubes and bundles of only two nanotubes are obtained in water. The integration of TEG (triethylene glycol) monomethyl ether chains and cyclopeptide backbones may allow the control of width of single nanotubes.

Abstract:Nanotubes with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are attracting much attention due to many potential applications, such as chiroptical materials, displays, and sensing. However, it remains a challenge to change the assemblies of ordinarily molecular building blocks into CPL supramolecular nanotubes. Herein, the regulation of quite common dipeptide (Fmoc-FF) assemblies into unprecedented helical nanotubes exhibiting intense CPL is reported by simply doping a few phthalocyanine (octakis(carboxyl)phthalocyaninato zinc complex (Pc)) molecules. Interestingly, altering the Fmoc-FF/Pc molar ratios over a wide range cannot change the nanotubes structures according to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) measurements. Although molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the noncovalent interactions between Fmoc-FF and Pc are quite weak, few Pc molecules can still change the secondary structures of a large number of Fmoc-FF assemblies, which hierarchically form helical supramolecular nanotubes with long-range ordered molecular packing, leading to intense CPL signals with large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g<sub>lum</sub> = 0.04). Consequently, the chiral reorganization of Fmoc-FF assemblies is dependent on the coassembly between Pc molecule and Fmoc-FF supramolecular architectures. These results open the possibility for the fine-tuning of helix and supramolecular nanotubes with CPL properties by using a small number of cofactors.

The blue shift of UV–Vis and Fluorescent spectra, the TEM images show the formation of nanoparticles within the polyelectrolyte chains. Abstract:Here we propose the approach to design of the new type of hybrids of oligonucleotides with fluorescein-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes. The approach is based on stacking interactions of functionalized nanotubes with pyrene residues in conjugates of oligonucleotides. The amino- and fluorescein-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes were obtained, and their physico-chemical properties were investigated. The effect of carbon nanotubes functionalization type on the efficacy of sorption of pyrene conjugates of oligonucleotides was examined. Proposed non-covalent hybrids of fluorescein-labeled carbon nanotubes with oligonucleotides may be used for intracellular transport of functional nucleic acids.

Abstract:The intrinsic relationship between the properties of green fluorescent protein (GFP) and its encapsulated small molecular light machine has spurred many biomimicking studies, aiming at revealing the detailed mechanism and further promoting its wide applications in different disciplines. However, how to build a similar confined microenvironment to mimic the cavity of a beta-barrel and the fluorescence turn-on process is a fundamental challenge for both chemists and biologists. Herein, two distinct exo- and endo-functionalized tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based M12L24 nanospheres with precise distribution of anchored TPE moieties and unique photophysical properties were constructed by means of a coordina- tion-driven self-assembly strategy. Under dilute conditions, the nanospheres fluoresce more strongly than the corresponding TPE subcomponents. Meanwhile, the endo-functionalized sphere is able to induce a higher local concentration and more restrained motion of the enclosed 24 TPE units compared with exo-functionalized counterpart and thus induces much stronger emission due to the restriction of the rotation of the pendant TPE units. The biomimetic methodology developed here represents a promising way to understand and construct artificial GFP materials on the platforms of supramolecular coordination complexes.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymeric nanowires 1(n) constructed by a 3D shape-persistent hexaacid 1 through multiple hydrogen bonding interactions was developed. Single molecular nanoires were also obtained from its highly dilute solution.Hexaacid 1 containing pi-conjugated chromophores successfully self-assembled to afford these nanofibers with high solid quantum efficiency (22%), which provides us a pathway to fabricate optoelectronic devices using these highly fluorescent nanofibers.

Abstract:CdSe/ZnS core–shell quantum dots (QDs) were efficiently tethered onto polyamidoamine dendrimer-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by covalent linkage and mercapto-mediated assembly. The obtained MWCNT-QD hybrids were both photophysically and morphologically characterized. The QDs are well-distributed on single nanotube surface in high density and the assembly of QDs onto MWCNTs does not change the fluorescence emission wavelength of QDs but significantly decreases the emission density. Cytotoxicity of MWCNT-QD hybrids to HeLa cells and their fluorescence property in living cell system were evaluated in detail. The hybrids show a little effect on cell viability even at very high concentration (100μgmL−1). Moreover, they possess intense red fluorescence signal under optical fluorescence microscopy and good fluorescence stability over 72-h exposure in living cell system.

Abstract:Self-assembly fluorescent vesicles were designed and prepared based on the supramolecular interaction of cyclodextrins and N-alkylamino-l-anthraquinone (n-AQ). As the guest molecules, n-AQs with alkyl lengths ranging from C0 to C18 were synthesised by the direct reaction of alkylamine with l-nitroanthraquinone in N,N-dimethylformamide. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and epi fluorescence microscopy were employed to study the vesicle system in detail. The formation mechanism of the vesicles was suggested based on the results of TEM observation, UV spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, 1H NMR and simulation in the software Materials 4.3. The fluorescent vesicles show sensitive and multi-responsive properties to external stimuli. Based on these properties, we tried to use the vesicle as a new kind of fluorescence staining material for living cells. The vesicles can effectively stain the human breast cancer cells (MCF-7) and mice mononuclear macrophages (REW-264.7). This paper provides a better understanding in the design and preparation of drug delivery, biomaterials and intelligent materials.

Abstract:A heating treatment method for the synthesis of fluorescent nanoparticles using simple N-(9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl) (Fmoc)-protected tripeptides is reported. Two pairs of Fmoc-protected tripeptides (Fmoc-FR1 R2 , R1 =F or W, R2 =H or Y) were designed by changing the amino acid sequences of the peptides. The peptides can self-assemble into nanofibers at lower temperatures, which will spontaneously transform into fluorescent nanoparticles under heating treatment. Moreover, the fluorescence properties of the self-assembled structures can be affected by changing amino acids in the middle of the tripeptide. Specifically, tryptophan (W) can promote fluorescence of the assemblies incubated at high temperatures. Thus, the temperatures and amino sequences of the Fmoc-protected tripeptides have significant effects on the fluorescence of the assembled nanostructures. The results provide a design principle for self-assembled fluorescent peptide nanostructures with potential biomedical applications.

Abstract:Vesicular particles based on inclusion complexes between BPB and -HB--CDs were prepared and characterized for the first time. The morphologies and sizes were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Particularly, these vesicular particles exhibiting clearly fluorescent dots observed by laser confocal scanning microscopy (LCSM) could be alternative candidates as fluorescent probes and labels being applied to cellular staining, labeling, bio-mimicking and drug delivery. The ultraviolet, fluorescence, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements confirmed the existence of stable 1:1 BPB--HB--CD complexes in the system. The vesicular particles were assumed to be constructed by orderly self-aggregates of these inclusion complexes.

Abstract:Cyclopeptides, adopting beta-sheet-like arrangements, can easily stack to form hollow tubular ensembles through the intermolecular hydrogen-bond network. A wide range of multi-structural and functional cyclopeptide nanotubes can be produced by changing the structures and numbers of peptide subunits employed or modifying with variant functional groups. Firstly, the present paper reviews the application progress of the experimental and theoretical researches of self-assembling cyclopeptide nanotubes mimicking biologic transmembrane channels, focusing on the influences of the structures, polarities and hydrophobic properties on the transportation properties and the progress of molecular dynamic (MD) simulations of cyclopeptide nanotubes as water transportation channels. Secondly, the experimental research advances of cyclopeptide nanotubes using as the templets to produce biosensors by synthesis with functional nanomaterials such as electronic, optical and magnetic ones are introduced. The following brings forth the potential application foregrounds of cyclopeptide nanotubes functionating as medicines or drug carriers, especially in developing antibacterial and anti-infectional drugs. Finally, the experimental and theoretical research progress of the applications of cyclopeptide nanotubes functionating as the templets to prepare magnetic and electronic nanomaterials is reviewed.

Abstract:The integration of fluorescent inorganic nanocrystals into hybrid thin films with desirable optoelectronic properties is strongly demanded for their applications. We prepared flexible freestanding ultrathin protein films containing fluorescent nanocrystals by means of a filtration technique assisted by metal hydroxide nanostrands with high aspect ratio and extremely high positive charges on the surfaces. First, negatively charged proteins (apoferritin), CdSxSe1-x/ZnS nanocrystals (and/or fluorescent dye) were assembled on the surfaces of cadmium hydroxide nanostrands in water through electrostatic interaction. The resultant dispersion of nanocomposite fibers was filtered on a porous membrane to give a thin filter cake. After cross-linking apoferritin, the nanostrands were removed, and the remaining protein/nanocrystal composite layer was peeled off from the substrate in ethanol as a free-standing fluorescent film. The film thickness could be as thin as 40 nm, without limitation in the diameter. The free-standing fluorescent films are robust enough to be transferred onto any solid substrate without rupturing. The fluorescent films with different colors were obtainable by choosing fluorescent nanocrystals (and/or fluorescent dye) to be immobilized into the protein matrix. The optical properties of these films were changed with the combination of the nanocrystals and fluorescent dye, and the fluorescent resonance energy transfer quenching (or enhancement) was clearly observed in certain conditions. The amount of CdSxSe1-x/ZnS nanocrystals in the film was as high as 41% in weight, and 13% in volume. The fluorescent film was transparent and without obvious segregation of the nanocrystals, as confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM). The fluorescent emission was bright, uniform, and as narrow as that in the original solution of the nanocrystals. This is remarkable for the application of fluorescent inorganic nanocrystals to flexible solid optical devices.
