Abstract:The iron and steel industry is not only an important foundation of the national economy, but also the largest source of industrial air pollution. Due to the current status of emissions in the iron and steel industry, ultra-low pollutant emission control technology has been researched and developed. Liquid-phase proportion control technology has been developed for magnesian fluxed pellets, and a blast furnace smelting demonstration project has been established to use a high proportion of fluxed pellets (80%) for the first time in China to realize source emission reduction of SO2 and NOx. Based on the characteristics of high NOx concentrations and the coexistence of multiple pollutants in coke oven flue gas, low-NOx combustion coupled with multi-pollutant cooperative control technology with activated carbon was developed to achieve efficient removal of multiple pollutants and resource utilization of sulfur. Based on the characteristics of co-existing multiple pollutants in pellet flue gas, selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) coupled with ozone oxidation and spray drying adsorption (SDA) was developed, which significantly reduces the operating cost of the system. In the light of the high humidity and high alkalinity in flue gas, filter materials with high humidity resistance and corrosion resistance were manufactured, and an integrated pre-charged bag dust collector device was developed, which realized ultra-low emission of fine particles and reduced filtration resistance and energy consumption in the system. Through source emission reduction, process control and end-treatment technologies, five demonstration projects were built, providing a full set of technical solutions for ultra-low emissions of dust, SO2, NOx, SO3, mercury and other pollutants, and offering technical support for the green development of the iron and steel industry.
Current Situatoin of R & D on COURSE 50 Technology in Japan

Abstract:The COURSE 50 technology consisting of ironmaking process in BF by introducing hydrogen and the relevant supporting process as well as the process for CCS from BF gas is described. Meanwhile the current situation of the developments on the COURSE 50 technology is discussed, concerning the laboratory-based research results on the ironmaking process in BF by introducing hydrogen, experiments and experimental results based on the small blast furnace in Sweden, the latest progress of R&D on both the technology for improving the quality of coke oven gas and the Hypercoal technology, the current situation of R&D on both the process for separating and recovering CO2 from BF gas and the relevant supporting process as well as the research subjects of the COURSE 50 programme from 2013 to 2017. At last it is concluded that some supporting processes are of great strategic significance for improving the competitiveness of an enterprise and promoting the sustainability development of the iron&steel industry.

Abstract:In order to implement the spirit of the national energy saving and emission reduction,to achieve the goal of "low carbon iron making,energy saving and emission reduction,cleaner production",some new techniques and measures need to be further developed and utilized on the basis of continuously perfecting the traditional energy saving and emission reduction such as coal injection and high blast temperature.The paper gives a brief introduction about CO2 emission during the iron and steel production process,emphatically states CO2 generation and emission status of blast furnace system.At the same time it introduces the new research hot points on CO2 emission reduction such as carbon composite iron ore hot briquette charging,top gas recycling utilization,coke oven gas injection,hydrogen-containing materials injection and so on and analyses the techniques' feasibility in Anyang Steel.

Recent Advancements in Source Reduction and Recycling Technologies for Converter Dust

Abstract:Converter dust is a valuable by-product of converter steelmaking, however, it has not been well recycled and dust emissions pollute the environment. This paper summarizes the process of converter dust formation, unifies the dust generation theory, and reviews recent advances and improvements in dust source reduction technologies. In the top-blown CO2-O2 and bottom-blown O2-CaO technologies, the converter dust production was reduced by 9.95% and 10.99% along with a Fe reduction of 12.98% and 16.58% in the dust, respectively. Combined with the distinguishing features of converter dust and the advantages of the recently developed process, a new converter flue gas recycling (CFGR) process is proposed to recover and treat the waste gas and dust in the flue gas and recycles them for converter production. The CFGR process can not only reduce the generation of converter dust from the source, but also fully recycle the dust produced in the steelmaking process. It adheres to the principle of no waste generated in the steel production, makes the converter steelmaking process cleaner and promotes the sustainable development of the iron and steel industry. In the CFGR process, a significant carbon dioxide capture and usage (CCU) approach has been developed by capturing and utilizing the CO2 produced during steelmaking, which can effectively reduce the carbon emissions of the iron and steel industry.

Abstract:In an effort to develop breakthrough technologies that enable drastic reduction in CO2 emissions from steel industry (ULCOS project), the reduction of iron ore by pure hydrogen in a direct reduction shaft furnace was investigated. After experimental and modelling studies, a 2D, axisymmetrical steady-state model called REDUCTOR was developed to simulate a counter-current moving bed reactor in which hematite pellets are reduced by pure hydrogen. This model is based on the numerical solution of the local mass, energy and momentum balances of the gas and solid species by the finite volume method. A single pellet sub-model was included in the global furnace model to simulate the successive reactions (hematite->magnetite ->wustite->iron) involved in the process, using the concept of additive reaction times. The different steps of mass transfer and possible iron sintering at the grain scale were accounted for. The kinetic parameters were derived from reduction experiments carried out in a thermobalance furnace, at different conditions, using small hematite cubes shaped from industrial pellets. Solid characterizations were also performed to further understand the microstrutural evolution. First results have shown that the use of hydrogen accelerates the reduction in comparison to CO reaction, making it possible to design a hydrogen-operated shaft reactor quite smaller than current MIDREX and HYL. Globally, the hydrogen steelmaking route based on this new process is technically and environmentally attractive. CO2 emissions would be reduced by more than 80%. Its future is linked to the emergence of the hydrogen economy.

Abstract:The iron and steel industry is a dominant carbon emission source in China. CCUS is an important potential technology for large-scale carbon reduction. However, due to the characteristics of multi-point source emissions of the iron and steel industry, the application is still in its infancy. Here, the research progresses of CCUS technology in the iron and steel industry are systematically reviewed, including the projects and novel materials. The maturity and applicability of various technologies were further analyzed by considering the CO2 emission characteristics of different steel-making processes. Finally, four kinds of integrated schemes of CCUS in the iron and steel industry were proposed, including “synergistic chemical utilization of hydrogen resource and CO2”, “steel slag mineralization and carbon fixation in coordination with solid waste disposal”, “microalgae biological carbon fixation collaborative wastewater treatment”, and “CO2 geological utilization and storage”. The applicability of the proposed integrated schemes were further analyzed based on the regional distribution of iron and steel enterprises in China. The results of this work were aimed at facilitating the application of CCUS in the iron and steel industry in China.

Abstract:The iron and steel industry (ISI) is energy-intensive and is responsible for approximately 25% of the global direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from industrial sectors. As the largest steel producer and consumer, China bears the primary responsibility for saving energy and reducing GHG emissions; accordingly, they have developed many strategies for GHG abatement. However, owing to the high investment costs and long equipment service lives, the ISI must carefully weigh the cost and emission reduction potential of these approaches. This review discusses research findings aimed at technological improvements and ultra-low carbon technologies relevant to the ISI, emphasizing their cost-effectiveness and development prospects. Based on the life cycle analysis method, this review establishes a comprehensive analytical framework to integrate the results from different studies to consider more factors in the design of GHG emission reduction strategies. The results indicate that the full application of mainstream technological improvements can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 43%. Furthermore, combining these strategies with ultra-low carbon technologies can achieve a reduction of 80%-95%. The marginal cost reduction associated with implementing such technological improvements is in the range of -5 to 0.5 USD/kgCO(2). Applying carbon capture, utilization, and storage strategies or hydrogen-based technologies in China's ISI for deep decarbonization scenarios is expected to lead to cost reductions between 12 and 35 billion USD by 2050. We propose that China's ISI requires technological improvements in the short term and should prioritize ultra-low carbon technology development for the long term.

Abstract:In steel industry and in mines, a significant amount of ultra-fines waste iron oxides and iron ore fines is generated. Utilizations of these fines are required to reduce the environmental hazards and conserve the natural resources. Some of these fines are normally used in sintering practice. However, sintering has a limitation of accepting ultra-fines materials. Pelletizing can use ultra-fine iron oxides. However, suitable technology is required for preparation of good quality pellets. Some of the fines, viz. blast furnace (BF) flue dust, Linz Donawitz (LD) converter sludge etc., are not suitable due to their high alkali and Zn content. Some other material like slime is not considered to be suitable in normal pelletizing practice, because of its high alumina and silica content and excessively fine size. On the other hand mill scale and blue dust have poor green bonding property. Therefore, suitable technologies are required to be developed for their utilization/recycling. This paper discusses the various technologies developed such as (i) developing flux for basic oxygen steelmaking process, (ii) improved pelletizing practice for better reducibility, lower reduction degradation and replacing bentonite binder, and (iii) special quality sinters for improving micro-fines utilization. These technologies may have very good application potential.

Abstract:New technologies in blast furnace burden which are developing in Japan have a marked effect in reducing CO2 emission.CIS(Carbon Included Sinter) developed by Sumitomo Metal Industries is introduced,and compared to the pre-reduced agglomerate developed by JFE.Highly reactive coke and iron coke developed by New Nippon Steel,carbon iron composite developed by JFE,and HPC developed by NEDO,etc.is presented separately and compared with each other.It is pointed out that the success of these new burden is not only advantageous to CO2 emission reduction,but also favorable to reducing production cost of hot metal and improving competitive ability of iron and steel enterprises.
Sustainable Ironmaking Toward a Future Circular Steel Economy: Exploiting a Critical Oxygen Concentration for Metallurgical Cu Removal from Scrap‐Based Melts

Abstract:A circular steel economy based on recycling scrap is severely hampered by the increasing accumulation of Cu. Herein, it is shown that Cu concentrations can be drastically reduced from 1 to less than 0.1 wt% by exploiting a critical oxygen concentration via the addition of iron ore to the melt, thereby actively removing Cu rather than simply diluting its concentration. A circular steel economy based on recycling scrap is severely hampered by the increasing accumulation of Cu returning from more and more electrified products, which severely limits processing, application, and safety of steels. As of yet, no viable strategies for its removal have been developed, and the increasing Cu contamination can only be diluted with fresh primary iron. This is not only evoking CO2 emissions from conventional reduction processes, but also merely delays the problem until global demands allow for a circular steel economy. However, the ongoing transformation toward green steel making may offer pathways to overcome this complex metallurgical challenge. It is demonstrated that Cu can be effectively evaporated from Fe–Cu–O melts—representing Fe ore mixed with Cu‐contaminated steel scrap—during hydrogen plasma‐based smelting reduction. This evaporation is found to be strongly influenced by the Cu activity determined by the concentration of oxygen in the liquid, with a critical O concentration of about 22 wt%. Even without the presence of hydrogen, Cu concentrations can thereby be drastically reduced from 1 to less than 0.1 wt%. Potentials and challenges for leveraging these fundamental findings on a laboratory scale for future industrial production of green steel are outlined and discussed.

Abstract:CO2 Ultimate Reduction System for Cool Earth 50 (COURSE50) successfully carried out operational trials with an experimental blast furnace in which the effect of the reaction-control by COG injection, top gas recycling, and use of high reducibility sinter on the carbon rate were determined. The conditions of the operational trials were designed by applying the mathematical blast furnace model that was developed. The results obtained in the operational trials indicate that the proportion of carbon direct reduction can be decreased while maintaining that of CO reduction, by the reaction-control by COG injection, top gas recycling, and use of high reducibility sinter. A reduction in the carbon rate of approximately 10% was achieved as predicted by the mathematical blast furnace model.

Abstract:For the realization of a sustainable society, the number of environmentally friendly products introduced in the recent decades has increased in iron and steel products. Such products are compatible with environmental regulations, are preferable from the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) viewpoint and save energy when used in the final products because of their improved properties. Hydro‐forming technology simplifies the production process, of automotive parts and reduces the parts' weight, contributing to an improvement in the fuel consumption rate of automobiles. In the steel‐refining process, reduction of slag emission is a key issue and is accomplished by improvements in dephosporization efficiency and the recycling of the refining slag as in the multiple refining converter (MURC) process. Electromagnetic casting reduces the number of defects in hot coils produced from the slab cast by its application and has the possibility of eliminating the slab surface treatment, which saves energy. Control of non‐metallic inclusions and segregation are now utilized for the generation of steel properties more suitable for environmental concerns. Hydrogen gas generation by using coke oven gas and waste plastic recycling by using a coke oven also contribute toward creating a sustainable society.

Abstract:Hydrogen metallurgy is a technology that applies hydrogen instead of carbon as a reduction agent to reduce CO2 emission, and the use of hydrogen is beneficial to promoting the sustainable development of the steel industry. Hydrogen metallurgy has numerous applications, such as H2 reduction ironmaking in Japan, ULCORED and hydrogen-based steelmaking in Europe; hydrogen flash ironmaking technology in the US; HYBRIT in the Nordics; Midrex H2™ by Midrex Technologies, Inc. (United States); H2FUTURE by Voestalpine (Austria); and SAL-COS by Salzgitter AG (Germany). Hydrogen-rich blast furnaces (BFs) with COG injection are common in China. Running BFs have been industrially tested by AnSteel, XuSteel, and BenSteel. In a currently under construction pilot plant of a coal gasification-gas-based shaft furnace with an annual output of 10000 t direct reduction iron (DRI), a reducing gas composed of 57vol% H2 and 38vol% CO is prepared via the Ende method. The life cycle of the coal gasification—gas-based shaft furnace—electric furnace short process (30wt% DRI + 70wt% scrap) is assessed with 1 t of molten steel as a functional unit. This plant has a total energy consumption per ton of steel of 263.67 kg standard coal and a CO2 emission per ton of steel of 829.89 kg, which are superior to those of a traditional BF converter process. Considering domestic materials and fuels, hydrogen production and storage, and hydrogen reduction characteristics, we believe that a hydrogen-rich shaft furnace will be suitable in China. Hydrogen production and storage with an economic and large-scale industrialization will promote the further development of a full hydrogen shaft furnace.

Abstract:Air pollutant emissions represent a critical challenge in the green development of the non-ferrous metallurgy industry. This work studied the emission characteristics, formation mechanisms, phase transformation and separation of typical air pollutants, such as heavy metal particles, mercury, sulfur oxides and fluoride, during non-ferrous smelting. A series of purification technologies, including optimization of the furnace throat and high-temperature discharge, were developed to collaboratively control and recover fine particles from the flue gas of heavy metal smelting processes, including copper, lead and zinc. Significant improvements have been realized in wet scrubbing technology for removing mercury, fluoride and SO2 from flue gas. Gas-liquid sulfidation technology by applying H2S was invented to recycle the acid scrubbing wastewater more efficiently and in an eco-friendly manner. Based on digital technology, a source reduction method was designed for sulfur and fluoride control during the whole aluminum electrolysis process. New desulfurization technologies were developed for catalytic reduction of the sulfur content in petroleum coke at low temperature and catalytic reduction of SO2 to elemental sulfur. This work has established the technology for coupling multi-pollutant control and resource recovery from the flue gas from non-ferrous metallurgy, which provides the scientific theoretical basis and application technology for the treatment of air pollutants in the non-ferrous metallurgy industry.

Abstract:Under the global dual-carbon background, heightened public awareness of climate change and strengthened carbon taxation policies are increasing pressure on the steel industry to transition. Given the urgent need for carbon reduction, the exploration of low-carbon pathways in a blast furnace (BF) metallurgy emerges as crucial. Evaluating both asset retention and technological maturity, the development of low-carbon technologies for BFs represents the most direct and effective technical approach. This article introduces global advancements in low-carbon metallurgical technologies for BFs, showcasing international progress encompassing hydrogen enrichment, oxygen enrichment, carbon cycling technologies, biomass utilization, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. Hydrogen enrichment is identified as the primary technological upgrade currently, although its carbon emission reduction potential is limited to 10% to 30%, insufficient to fundamentally address high carbon emissions from BFs. Therefore, this article innovatively proposes a comprehensive low-carbon metallurgical process concept with the substitution of carbon-neutral biomass fuels at the source stage—intensification of hydrogen enrichment in the process stage—fixation of CCUS at the end stage (SS-IP-FE). This process integrates the cleanliness of biomass, the high-efficiency of hydrogen enrichment, and the thoroughness of carbon fixation through CCUS, synergistically enhancing overall effectiveness. This integrated strategy holds promise for achieving a 50% reduction in carbon emissions from BFs in the long processes. Critical elements of these core technologies are analyzed, assessing their cost-effectiveness and emission reduction potential, underscoring comprehensive low-carbon metallurgy as a pivotal direction for future steel industry development with high technological feasibility and emission reduction efficacy. The article also proposes a series of targeted recommendations, suggesting short-term focus on technological optimization, the medium-term enhancement of technology research and application, and the long-term establishment of a comprehensive low-carbon metallurgical system.

Abstract:In order to establish the new technology system of low cost , high efficiency and stable characteristics for producing clean steel, technology of converter blowing and using limestone for slagging was researched. Decomposition characteristics of limestone and feasibility of using limestone instead of lime for slagging were analyzed. Experiments were conducted. It is found that adding limestone directly into converter to replace the traditional “burnt lime - slagging and steelmaking” can reduce more than 50 % of the amount of burnt lime , based on that the amount of the burnt lime ranges from 40 to 50 kg of per ton of steel. The technology of using CO2 instead of N2 for converter slag splashing and bottom blowing CO2 for stirring and smelting will achieve good results.

Abstract:Designs of European blast furnace hearth are introduced,including the design of sump depth,cooling system and refractory lining.The paper further states that the refractory material should be matched with the sump depth,and cites some cases of hearth lining design.The cooling technologies used in bosh,belly and stack lower part of European blast furnaces,and integrated lining design of copper stave coupled with graphite/semi-graphite in Tata Corus IJmuiden are presented.The available long-life experiences can be drawn from European blast furnaces.
