Abstract:The domestic and foreign methods for removal of algae and algal toxins from raw water were introduced.The drinking water treatment processes used for removal of algae and intracellular toxins are mainly prefiltration,enhanced coagulation,flotation and so on.The removal processes of extracellular dissolved toxins are biological pretreatment,activated carbon adsorption,membrane filtration,ozone oxidation,ultraviolet radiation and other advanced oxidations.By analyzing the merits and demerits of these processes and the research progress,some feasible combined processes were put forward,and the possible development directions were prospected.

Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment is a promising solution to the challenges in the current water treatment processes, particularly to the crisis of persistent and trace emerging contaminants. Taking the integrated process coupling membrane filtration with ozonation that has been developed and widely applied in field as examples, we analyze the scientific rationale of catalytic ceramic membranes and nano-effects in membrane pores, which are considered as nano-reactors. The confinement effects are analyzed from four aspects, including the high specific surface area in membrane nano-pores, enrichment of reactants and enhancement of reaction kinetics in nano-pores, organized arrangement of water molecules in nano-reactors and the role of electric double layer during reactions. For each aspect, we build the correlation between the confinement effects and the phenomena in membrane nano-pores. Moreover, we present opportunities for the future research on nanotechnology-enabled water treatment.

Abstract:Electrolyzed water is generated through electrolysis of dilute salt solution or hydrochloric acid in an electric field.It is characterized in two types,acidic electrolyzed water and alkaline electrolyzed water,by the electrolysis extent.Acidic electrolyzed water was reported to exhibit strong antibacterial activity against many pathogens with instant,a high effectiveness,safety,and no chemical residues.The principle of producing electrolyzed water and sterilization mechanism of acidic electrolyzed water were discussed in the paper.The research and application of acidic electrolyzed water sterilization technology in planting,breeding industry and the processing industry of agricultural products were also reviewed.And the future development of the technology was put forward on these bases.

Abstract:Electrochemical technologies are capable of keeping environmental interfacial processes at high rate and efficiency through directionally and accurately controlling the electron transfer.It is becoming a new strategy in dealing with water pollution and water scarcity for its extraordinary features and superiorities.In the past ten years,electrochemical technologies for water treatment have achieved great progress,which is heading for efficient electrodes,coupling technical processes,low-carbon operations.To thoroughly study the mechanism of electrochemical water treatment technologies,and further discuss the application of electrochemical technologies,attention has been focused on designing of electrode materials,exploiting of high-performance reactors,combination of technical processes,and recovery of resources and energy in wastewater.This article reviews the research progresses of electro-coagulation,electro-oxidation,electro-reduction,electro-(re)dialysis and electro-adsorption.In the end,this article puts forward a conclusion on technology development of electrochemical water treatment so as to get an outlook in this field.

Abstract:<p>Electrochemical water quality stabilization technology is a novel and active technique for quality control of recirculating cooling water. This paper firstly expounds the mechanism of that technology on scale cleaning, sterilization, algae and organic substances removal. Then, the material, function and selection basis of anode, cathode and power supply system are introduced. The typical forms of electrochemical devices on the market (i.e. manual and automatic), and system installation forms (i.e. directly immersive type and outer tank operated type) are systematically summarized, of which the relevant factors influencing the treatment effect (i.e. electrical indexes, power supply mode, hydraulic retention time, the cathode and water quality parameters) are accordingly analyzed. Ultimately, we review the applications of electrochemical water quality stabilization technology in practical recirculating cooling water system reported in China. It is pointed out that future perspective of research and practice should be to highlight the technology performance improvement and the application cost reduction.</p>

Abstract:Electrochemical methods can enhance the rate and efficiency of environmental interface processes through the directional transfer and precise regulation of electrons. Its extraordinary characteristics and advantages can be applied in water treatment, which is an important technical means to crack water crisis and water pollution. In the past 10 years, electrochemical water treatment technology has been developed rapidly and tends towards electrode efficiency, process coupling as well as low carbon and green development. It will further focus on important directions such as functional electrode material design, high-efficiency reactor and combined process development, and directional transfer and recovery of resources and energy in the future. This review describes the current research status and practical applications of electrochemical technology in different kinds of wastewater treatment, while analyzing the basic working principles of different water treatment technologies of electrochemistry. Despite a generally environmentally friendly and efficient treatment method, electrochemistry as a water treatment technology still has certain drawbacks. This review suggests that future research should be strengthened regarding the reduction of energy consumption of the overall water treatment system, the overall system cost should be reduced based on various aspects of the application, and attempts should be made to combine the application with traditional processes.

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry has been treated for reutilization by electrodialysis(ED)and reverse osmosis(RO)in laboratory.The results show that most of the salinity and COD can be removed by ED.The conductivity of the effluent after ED is as low as 260 μS/cm,COD is 46 mg/L.After the concentrated water is treated consequently by RO the conductivity of permeate is 200 μS/cm and COD 27.7 mg/L.After the treatment,both of the effluent and permeate conform to the standard of reutilization,and can be reused as circulating cooling water,without negative influence on the production.

Abstract:For treating wastewater, electrochemical engineering has been rediscovered during the last four decades through the world for its inherent advantages comparatively with traditional technologies especially the chemical and biological techniques. However, the expansion of this technology founded on electric current applying has been retarded by several technical-economic factors especially the detection of disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation. This work focuses on the challenges and future tendencies for this highly-efficient technology to reach the full-scale implementations particularly in disinfecting water. Lately, new versions of electrochemical techniques have been suggested such as employing sulfate radical anion (SO 4 .- ) and sunlight to generate . OH radicals in TiO2 photocatalysis and photo-Fenton water treatment. These improvements elevated the electrochemical engineering efficiency and acceptation. However, more efforts remain to be accomplished for water reuse vision. Future researches would focus on integrating membranes processes such as nanofiltration and reverse osmosis for a safe removal of DBPs.

Abstract:<p>Water shortage and quality deterioration are plaguing people all over the world. Providing sustainable and affordable treatment solutions to these problems is a need of the hour. Electrocoagulation (EC) technology is a burgeoning alternative for effective water treatment, which offers the virtues such as compact equipment, easy operation, and low sludge production. Compared to other water purification technologies, EC shows excellent removal efficacy for a wide range of contaminants in water and has great potential for addressing limitations of conventional water purification technologies. This review summarizes the latest development of principle, characteristics, and reactor design of EC. The design of key parameters including reactor shape, power supply type, current density, as well as electrode configuration is further elaborated. In particular, typical water treatment systems powered by renewable energy (solar photovoltaic and wind turbine systems) are proposed. Further, this review provides an overview on expanded application of EC in the removal of some newly concerned pollutants in recent years, including arsenite, perfluorinated compounds, pharmaceuticals, oil, bacteria, and viruses. The removal efficiency and mechanisms of these pollutants are also discussed. Finally, future research trend and focus are further recommended. This review can bridge the large knowledge gap for the EC application that is beneficial for environmental researchers and engineers.</p>

Abstract:In recent decades, the environmentally benign electrochemical softening process has been gaining widespread interest as an emerging alternative for water softening. But, in spite of decades of research, the fundamental advances in laboratory involving electrolytic cell design and treatment system development have not led to urgently needed improvements in industrially practicable electrochemical softening technique. In this review, we firstly provide the critical insights into the mechanism of the currently widely used cathode precipitation process and its inherent limitations, which seriously impede its wide implementation in industry. To relieve the above limitations, some cutting-edge electrochemically homogeneous crystallization systems have been developed, the effectiveness of which are also comprehensively summarized. In addition, the pros and cons between cathode precipitation and electrochemically homogeneous crystallization systems are systematically outlined in terms of performance and economic evaluation, potential application area, and electrolytic cell and system complexity. Finally, we discourse upon practical challenges impeding the industrial-scale deployment of electrochemical water softening technique and highlight the integration of strong engineering sense with fundamental research to realize industry-scale deployment. This review will inspire the researchers and engineers to break the bottlenecks in electrochemical water softening technology and harness this technology with the broadened industrial application area.

Abstract:The high voltage pulsed electrocoagulation technology is an ideal technique for the treatment to the wastewater and has a great potential for its application.The principles of the high voltage pulsed electrocoagulation technology and the operation characteristics for wastewater treatment were summarized.Application examples of the treatment to the electroplating wastewater were described.The application results show that the pollutants in the electroplating wastewater can be removed efficiently with the optimum operation conditions,and the residual metal concentrations of the wastewater under legal limits of industrial water were obtained.The existing problems in the applications and the developing trends of the technology were discussed.

Abstract:Water disinfection is the most important process to control the risks caused by the microbes within water. Conventional water disinfection processes, including chlorination, ozonation, and ultraviolet, show intrinsic disadvantages such as low disinfection efficiency, harmful byproduct formation, and microbial reactivation/regrowth during extensive applications. In order to overcome these limitations, electrochemical membrane technology is explored as an emerging efficient water disinfection approach, with novel disinfection mechanisms achieved by the specific physical, electrochemical, and biological characteristics of electrochemical membranes. This chapter gives an overview into the main mechanisms involved in the disinfection process by electrochemical membranes, as well as the development progress of the reactor configuration designs. Different water disinfection mechanisms and reactor configurations are comprehensively compared with the aspect of disinfection efficiency and energy consumption. Furthermore, the limitations and future perspectives of electrochemical membrane technology for water disinfection are also proposed.

Abstract: Electrocoagulation (EC) is an electrochemical method of treating polluted water where sacrificial anodes corrode to release active coagulant precursors (usually aluminum or iron cations) into solution. At the cathode, gas evolves (usually as hydrogen bubbles) accompanying electrolytic reactions. EC needs simple equipments and is designable for virtually any size. It is cost effective and easily operable. Specially, the recent technical improvements combined with a growing need for small-scale water treatment facilities have led to a revaluation of EC. In this chapter, the basic principle of EC was introduced first. Following that, reactions at the electrodes and electrode assignment were reviewed; electrode passivation process and activation method were presented; comparison between electrocoagulation and chemical coagulation was performed; typical design of the EC reactors was also described; and factors affecting electrocoagulation including current density, effect of conductivity, temperature, and pH were introduced in details. Finally, application of EC in water treatment was given in details.

Abstract:This paper focuses on exploring the future trend of the technologies on water pollution prevention.Ten key technical subjects on future water pollution prevention are selected as which was indicated from the results and rankings obtained with the Delphi method,including,urban wastewater treatment and recycling,drinking water purification and safety,industrial wastewater disposal and recycling,agricultural wastewater treatment and recycling,groundwater pollution control and prevention,traces of toxic and hazardous substances protection and control.Based on ten key technical subjects,analysis shows that the period to achieve this technical foresight will be in 2014-2018.USA,Japan and EU are the leading participators on water pollution prevention within these ten key technical subjects.Technological innovation is suggested as the most efficient strategy in solving water pollution problems for China.On the other hand,market demand and environmental policy are two foremost factors that constrain technological development in this field.The relevant technologies in China are currently mainly on the application phase.

Abstract:The field of water treatment has made significant ad-vancements over the past century,achieving numerous mile-stones in disinfection technology,activated sludge process,membrane filtration,and more.While great achievements have been made,the pursuit of sustainable water treatment technologies and process solutions remains pivotal within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Develop-ment Goal 6,which emphasizes"clean water and sanita-tion for all".Despite tremendous strides forward,attaining this goal still faces difficulties due to persistent challenges in water treatment,such as solid-liquid efficient separation,waterborne diseases prevention,resource recovery and uti-lization,emerging pollutants removal,etc.These challenges are compounded by the need for enhanced water safety standards,low energy consumption,and carbon-neutral practices.
