Abstract:The laws of chance are often subtle and deceptive. This is why games of chance work. People are convinced that they obey seemingly intuitive laws, while the underlying mathematical structure reveals a different and more complex reality. This article is a brief and rigorous journey through the implications that the mathematical laws governing stochastic processes have on gambling. It addresses a specific process, the random walk, and analyze some instances of fair and unfair games by highlighting the fallacy of many of our intuitions and beliefs. The paper gradually moves from the analysis of the random walk properties to a comprehensive description of the ruin problem. The introduction of the idea of transient and persistent states concludes the discussion. Much emphasis is placed on concrete examples and on the numerical values, in particular of the involved probabilities, and the interpretation of the results is always more central than the demonstrative technical details, which are nevertheless available to the reader.

Abstract:This progress report covers recent developments in the area of quantum randomness, which is an extraordinarily interdisciplinary area that belongs not only to physics, but also to philosophy, mathematics, computer science, and technology. For this reason the article contains three parts that will be essentially devoted to different aspects of quantum randomness, and even directed, although not restricted, to various audiences: a philosophical part, a physical part, and a technological part. For these reasons the article is written on an elementary level, combining very elementary and non-technical descriptions with a concise review of more advanced results. In this way readers of various provenances will be able to gain while reading the article.

Abstract:This paper is a light walk along interfaces between logic and probability, triggered by a chance encounter with Ed Brinksma. It is not a research paper, or a literature survey, but a pointer to issues. I discuss both direct combinations of logic and probability and structured ways in which logic can be seen as a qualitative version of probability theory. I end by sketching a concrete program for classifying qualitative scenarios that would lend themselves to simple logical reasoning methods, but I also acknowledge a challenge: the ‘unreasonable effective of probability’.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of the paper, in this two- part series, is to consider certain intriguing aspects of randomness, the basic mathematical concept used to model financial risk and other unknown quantities in the physical world.Design/methodology/approach - In Part 2 of the paper, the author describes methods for simulating random variables, and explores whether it is possible in practice to distinguish between the knowable complexity of compressible random variables and the unknowable complexity of incompressible random variables.Findings - In Part 2 of the paper, it is found that because of Chaitin's impossibility result (regarding incompressible sequences) and the possibility of constructing least- surprising sequences, one is left with two cognitive constraints with serious implications for statistical hypothesis testing and the scientific method.Originality/value - This two- part paper explores the underlying nature of randomness in terms of both its physical/mathematical properties and its role in human cognition.

Abstract:The extravagances of quantum mechanics never fail to enrich daily the debate around natural philosophy. Entanglement, non-locality, collapse, many worlds, many minds, and subjectivism have challenged generations of thinkers. Its approach can perhaps be placed in the stream of quantum logic, in which the "strangeness" of quantum mechanics is "measured" through the violation of Bell's inequalities and, from there, attempts an interpretative path that preserves realism yet ends up overturning it, restating the fundamental mechanisms of QM as a logical necessity for a strong realism.

Abstract:The dynamic instability of the living systems and the "superposition" of different forms of randomness are viewed as a component of the contingently increasing organization of life along evolution. We briefly survey how classical and quantum physics define randomness differently. We then discuss why this requires, in our view, an enrichment of the understanding of the effects of their concurrent presence in biological systems' dynamics. Biological randomness is then presented as an essential component of the heterogeneous determination and intrinsic unpredictability proper to life phenomena, due to the nesting and interaction of many levels of organization. Even increasing organization itself induces growing disorder, by energy dispersal effects of course, but also by variability and differentiation. Co-operation between diverse components in networks implies at the same time the presence of constraints due to the peculiar forms of (bio-)resonance and (bio-)entanglement we discuss.

Abstract:We analyze complexity of financial (and general economic) processes by comparing classical and quantum-like models for randomness. Our analysis implies that it might be that a quantum-like probabilistic description is more natural for financial market than the classical one. A part of our analysis is devoted to study the possibility of application of the quantum probabilistic model to agents of financial market. We show that, although the direct quantum (physical) reduction (based on using the scales of quantum mechanics) is meaningless, one may apply so called quantum-like models. In our approach quantum-like probabilistic behaviour is a consequence of contextualy of statistical data in finances (and economics in general). However, our hypothesis on "quantumness" of financial data should be tested experimentally (as opposed to the conventional description based on the noncontextual classical probabilistic approach). We present a new statistical test based on a generalization of the well known in quantum physics Bell's inequality.

Abstract:The results of this study are continuation of the research of Poincaré chaos initiated in papers (Akhmet M, Fen MO. Commun Nonlinear Sci Numer Simulat 2016;40:1-5; Akhmet M, Fen MO. We focus on the construction of an unpredictable function, continuous on the real axis. As auxiliary results, unpredictable orbits for the symbolic dynamics and the logistic map are obtained. By shaping the unpredictable function as well as Poisson function we have performed the first step in the development of the theory of unpredictable solutions for differential and discrete equations. The results are preliminary ones for deep analysis of chaos existence in differential and hybrid systems. Illustrative examples concerning unpredictable solutions of differential equations are provided.

Abstract:This expository paper advocates an approach to physics in which ``typicality" is identified with a suitable form of algorithmic randomness. To this end various theorems from mathematics and physics are reviewed. Their original versions state that some property F(x) holds for P-almost all x in X, where P is a probability measure on some space X. Their more refined (and typically more recent) formulations show that F(x) holds for all P-random x in X. The computational notion of P-randomness used here generalizes the one introduced by Martin-L"of in 1966 in a way now standard in algorithmic randomness. Examples come from probability theory, analysis, dynamical systems/ergodic theory, statistical mechanics, and quantum mechanics (especially hidden variable theories). An underlying philosophical theme, inherited from von Mises and Kolmogorov, is the interplay between probability and randomness, especially: which comes first?

Abstract:This pseudo-paper consists of excerpts drawn from two of my quantum-email samizdats. Section 1 draws a picture of a physical world whose essence is ``Darwinism all the way down.'' Section 2 outlines how quantum theory should be viewed in light of this, i.e., as being an expression of probabilism (in Bruno de Finetti or Richard Jeffrey's sense) all the way back up. Section 3 describes how the idea of ``identical'' quantum measurement outcomes, though sounding atomistic in character, nonetheless meshes well with a Jamesian style ``radical pluralism.'' Sections 4 and 5 further detail how quantum theory should not be viewed so much as a ``theory of the world,'' but rather as a theory of decision-making for agents immersed within a world of a particular character--the quantum world. Finally, Sections 6 and 7 attempt to sketch the very positive sense in which quantum theory is incomplete, but still just as complete is it can be. In total, I hope these heady speculations convey some of the excitement and potential I see for the malleable world quantum mechanics hints of.

Abstract:We report on measurements of 11-18 cm wavelength radio emission from interactions of 15.2 MeV pulsed electron bunches at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator. The electrons were observed both in a configuration where they produced primarily transition radiation from an aluminum foil, and in a configuration designed for the electrons to produce Cherenkov radiation in a silica sand target. Our aim was to emulate the large electron excess expected to develop during an electromagnetic cascade initiated by an ultra high-energy particle. Such charge asymmetries are predicted to produce strong coherent radio pulses, which are the basis for several experiments to detect high-energy neutrinos from the showers they induce in Antarctic ice and in the lunar regolith. We detected coherent emission which we attribute both to transition and possibly Cherenkov radiation at different levels depending on the experimental conditions. We discuss implications for experiments relying on radio emission for detection of electromagnetic cascades produced by ultra high-energy neutrinos.

Abstract:In a letter to Born, Einstein wrote: "Quantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory says a lot, but does not really bring us any closer to the secret of the old one. I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice." In this paper we take seriously Einstein's famous metaphor, and show that we can gain considerable insight into quantum mechanics by doing something as simple as rolling dice. More precisely, we show how to perform measurements on a single die, to create typical quantum interference effects, and how to connect (entangle) two identical dice, to maximally violate Bell's inequality.

Magic spreading in random quantum circuits

Abstract:Magic state resources or non-stabilizerness quantify the beyond-Clifford operations necessary for universal quantum computing. How rapidly are magic resources generated by generic many-body dynamics under constraints of locality? We address this problem by exploring magic spreading in brick-wall random unitary circuits. Inspired by the algebraic structure of the Clifford group, we propose a scalable measure of non-stabilizerness, the Calderbank-Shor-Steane entropy, which generalizes the notion of stabilizer entropy and mirrors its qualitative behavior. This metric enables the investigation of non-stabilizerness dynamics for systems of up to N = 1024 qudits. Our main finding is that magic resources equilibrate on timescales logarithmic in system size N, akin to anticoncentration and Hilbert space delocalization measures, but differently from entanglement entropy. We conjecture that our findings describe the phenomenology of non-stabilizerness growth in a broad class of chaotic many-body systems.

Extracting randomness from quantum 'magic'

Abstract:Magic is a critical property of quantum states that plays a pivotal role in fault-tolerant quantum computation. Simultaneously, random states have emerged as a key element in various randomized techniques within contemporary quantum science. In this study, we establish a direct connection between these two notions. More specifically, our research demonstrates that when a subsystem of a quantum state is measured, the resultant projected ensemble of the unmeasured subsystem can exhibit a high degree of randomness that is enhanced by the inherent 'magic' of the underlying state. We demonstrate this relationship rigorously for quantum state 2-designs, and present compelling numerical evidence to support its validity for higher-order quantum designs. Our findings suggest an efficient approach for leveraging magic as a resource to generate random quantum states.

Three Conjectures on Unexpectedeness

Abstract:Unexpectedness is a central concept in Simplicity Theory, a theory of cognition relating various inferential processes to the computation of Kolmogorov complexities, rather than probabilities. Its predictive power has been confirmed by several experiments with human subjects, yet its theoretical basis remains largely unexplored: why does it work? This paper lays the groundwork for three theoretical conjectures. First, unexpectedness can be seen as a generalization of Bayes' rule. Second, the frequentist core of unexpectedness can be connected to the function of tracking ergodic properties of the world. Third, unexpectedness can be seen as constituent of various measures of divergence between the entropy of the world (environment) and the variety of the observer (system). The resulting framework hints to research directions that go beyond the division between probabilistic and logical approaches, potentially bringing new insights into the extraction of causal relations, and into the role of descriptive mechanisms in learning.
