Abstract:Erdős and Simonovits asked the following question: For an integer c≥ 2 and a family of graphs ℱ, what is the infimum of α such that any ℱ-free n-vertex graph with minimum degree at least α n has chromatic number at most c? Denote the infimum as δ_χ(ℱ, c). A fundamental result of Erdős, Stone and Simonovits <cit.> implies that for any c≤ r-1, δ_χ(ℱ, c)=1-1 r, where r+1=χ(ℱ)=min{χ (F): F∈ℱ}. So the remaining challenge is to determine δ_χ(ℱ, c) for c≥χ (ℱ)-1. Most previous known results are under the condition c= χ (ℱ)-1. When c≥χ (ℱ), the only known exact results are δ_χ(K_3, 3) by Häggkvist and Jin, and δ_χ(K_3, c) for every c≥4 by Brandt and Thomassé, δ_χ(K_r, r) and δ_χ(K_r, r+1) by Nikiforov. In this paper, we focus on odd cycles. Combining results of Thomassen and Ma, we have Ω((c+1)^-8(k+1))=δ_χ(C_2k+1, c)=O(k/c) for c≥ 3. In this paper, we determine δ_χ(C_2k+1, c) for all c≥ 2 and k≥ 3c+4 (k≥ 5 if c=2). We also obtain the following corollary. If G is a non-c-partite graph on n vertices with c≥ 3 and δ(G)> n 2c+2, then C_2k+1⊂ G for all k∈ [3c+4, n 108(c+1)^c].
