Abstract:Objective To study the chemical constituents from leaves of Phyllostachys pubescens. Method Column chromatography on sephadex LH-20 as well as preparative HPLC and spectral analysis were used to isolate and elucidate the constituents. Result Six compounds were isolated from leaves of Phyllostachys pubescens, and identified as vanillin (I), syringic aldehyde (II), p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (III), vanillic acid (IV), syringic acid (V), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy cinnamic acid, ethyl ester (VI). Conclusion All above the compounds were isolated from the plant for the first time.

Abstract:A new stilbene, (trans)-4-[2-(3, 5-dimethoxyphenyl) ethenyl]-1,2-benzenediol (1), was isolated from the whole herbs of Sphaerophysa salsula, together with (trans)-4-[2-(3, 5-dimethoxy phenyl) ethenyl]-2-methoxyphenol (2) and daucosterol. The structure of 1 was determined on the basis of spectroscopic evidences.

Abstract:From the MeOH extract of Salvia moorcroftiana WALL. (Lamiaceae), four new compounds, the two flavonoid glycosides genkwanin 4'-[O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-beta-D-galactopyranoside] (1) and genkwanin 4'-[O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside] (2), and the two benzene derivatives 4-hydroxy-2-isopropyl-5-methylphenyl O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3) and nonyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (4), were isolated in addition to two known compounds. The structures of all new compounds were determined by 1D and 2D homonuclear and heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy and by comparison with published data.

Abstract:Phytochemical analysis of the whole plant of Salvia moorcroftiana Wall. (Lamiaceae) resulted in the isolation of two new flavonoid glycosides, together with three known compounds. The structures of the new compounds were established as genkwanin 4′-O-α-l-arabinopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-d-galactopyranoside (1) and genkwanin 4′-O-{α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)]-β-d-galactopyranoside} (2). The structures of all compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including 2D NMR techniques.

Abstract:There has been increasing interest in biologically active plant extracts. Studies continue to discover novel components, especially those with anti-anxiety activities. The present study investigates the anxiolytic activity of Salvia moorcroftiana Wall. ex Benth. aerial parts through both in vivo and in silico studies. Aerial parts of the experimental plant were extracted using a hydroalcoholic solvent and fractionated with various organic solvents of differing polarities, including hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. The chemical compositions were determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In vivo anti-anxiety activity was tested on various Swiss albino mice models. Results indicate that all fractions of S. moorcroftiana exhibited significant anxiolytic effects, with the butanol fraction displaying the highest efficacy. Molecular docking analysis suggested that some of the compounds could target anxiety disorder proteins. ADME/T calculations were performed to examine the effects of S. moorcroftiana extracts on human metabolism. Therefore, the present study establishes the significant anti-anxiety activity of S. moorcroftiana aerial parts, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent for various anxiety disorders. Abstract:Four new compounds, including three eudesmane sesquiterpenoids (1–3) and a dimeric sesquiterpenoid lactone (4), were isolated from the aerial part of Salvia plebeia R. Br., together with two known eudesmanolides (5–6). Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR, HR-ESI–MS spectra. Antiproliferative activities of isolates against six human myeloid leukemia cell lines were evaluated, salplebeone D (1) and G (4) showed moderate inhibitory activity. In addition, compound 4 was a rare eudesmane sesquiterpenoid dimer obtained from this specie for the first time.

Abstract:Eight compounds were isolated from EtOAc-soluble fraction of 70% ethanolic extract from the rhizome of Cibotium barometz (L.) J.Sm..On the basis of spectroscopic analysis,they were identified as (24R)-stigmast-4-ene-3-one (1),24-methylenecycloartanol (2),β-sitosterol (3),(3R)-des-O-methyl lasiodiplodin (4),protocatechuic aldehyde (5),onitin (6),alternariol (7),and daucosterol (8).Compounds 1,2,4,and 7 were isolated from the genus Cibotium Kaulf.for the first time.

Abstract:Investigation of the chemical constituents of Salvia judaica growing wild in Jordan led to the isolation and identification of 15 known compounds. These included: luteolin-3'-methyl ether (1), indole-3-carboxyaldehyde (2), p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (3), tricin (4), apigenin (5), methyl isoferuloyl-7-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) lactate (6), methyl rosmarinate (7), rosmarinic acid (8), salvigenin (9), β-sitosterol (10), 3β, 28-dihydroxyurs-12-ene (11), cirsilineol (12), 2,3-dihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid (13), β-sitosteryl glucoside (14), and tormentic acid (15). Compounds 6 and 7 exhibited strong radical scavenging and chelating activities as compared to α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid, compound 7 showed a 2-fold greater antioxidant activity as compared to compound 6. Furthermore, low doses of compounds 6 and 7 were able to inhibit the growth of leukemic (HL-60, Jurkat, K562 and CCRF-SB) and solid tumor cells (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and Caco-2). Compound 7 showed a ca. 3-4-fold stronger cytotoxicity against the tested cells as compared to compound 6.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the chemical constituents of aerial part of Rabdosia serra.METHOD:The compounds were isolated by extraction, coloum chromatography over silica gel and ODS, and preparative HPLC. Their structures were identified by various spectroscopic methods including MS, IR, 1D and 2D NMR data.RESULT:Six compounds were isolated from R. serra and were characterized as ent-1alpha, 7alpha, 14beta, 20-tetrahydroxy-11, 16-kauradien-15-one (1), kamebakaurin (2), dihydrokamebakaurin (3), rabdoinflexin A (4), daucosterol( 5), and beta-sitosterol (6).CONCLUSION:Compound 1 is a new compound, and coumpound 3 was obtained from this plant for the first time.

Abstract:Salvia przewalskii Maxim is a perennial plant from the genus Salvia (family Lamiaceae). The roots of S. przewalskii were long used as a traditional herb to treat blood circulation related illnesses in China. As part of our continuing interest in polycyclic natural products from medicinal plants, two unprecedented adducts comprised of a dinor-diterpenoid and a 9′-nor-rosmarinic acid derivative, linked by a 1,4-benzodioxane motif (1 and 2), were isolated from the roots of S. przewalskii. Their structures were established by extensive spectroscopic approaches including 1D, 2D NMR, and HRFABMS. Their cytotoxic activities against five human tumor cell lines were evaluated.

Abstract:The composition of the volatile oils obtained from the leaves and flowers of Salvia przewalskii Maxim. grown in Tibet was analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) for the first time. Totals of 43 compounds were identified in the leaf oil and 69 compounds in the flower oil. A comparative study of the oil composition from the leaves and flowers found 22 common constituents of these oils, viz. α-thujene, β-phellandrene, linalool, terpinene-4-ol, diisopropenyl methyl vinyl cyclohexane, caryophyllene, germacrene D, borneol, caryophyllene oxide, spathulenol, germacrene B, δ-cadinene, humulene, farnesane, α-cadinol, β-caryophyllene, elemene, sabinene hydrate, γ-terpinene, p-cymene, camphene and α-pinene. The percentages of the most components were higher in the leaf oil than in the flower oil, especially those of β-phellandrene and caryophyllene (26.08% and 11.11%, respectively). Farnesene, chamigrene, n-hexadecane, epicedrol, cyclotetradecane, n-octadecane, 9-octadecen-1-ol, 1-heneicosyl formate, Z-8-hexadecen-1-ol acetate, n-heneicosane and n-pentacosane were the specific constituents found only in the flower oil, while β-cadinol was the specific constituent found only in the leaf oil. Abstract:Background: Salvia verbenaca of the Lamiaceae family is a Mediterranean plant widely used in the Moroccan traditional folk medicine. The aim of this work was to explore the phytochemical composition of Salvia verbenaca extracts and its antioxidant activity. Methods: Separation and identification of the major phytochemicals present in the two hexane and ethyl acetate explored extracts have been achieved through ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography separation technique coupled to photodiode array and high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry detectors. Antioxidant activity of the obtained extracts was evaluated through DPPH• (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt) assays and the obtained results were compared to TROLOX (6-hydroxy2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid). Results: Using the analysis technique indicated above, eighteen phytochemicals belonging to phenolic acids, phenolic diterpenes and flavonoids have been characterized on the basis of the obtained UV and mass spectroscopic properties and on the subsequent fragmentations. The antioxidant activity of the explored extracts showed potential scavenging activities compared to TROLOX. A detailed discussion of the attained results has been presented considering the activities observed of each extract. Conclusions: The research herein presented an analysis technique allowing to screen Salvia verbenaca phytochemicals. The explored plant could be considered as a source of functional phenolic compounds. These could be useful for further pharmacological studies such as new drugs design after clinic and its safety evaluation. It is thus hoped that the information presented here might prompt further studies that will possibly lead to development of therapeutic agents from this plant.

Abstract:Three new compounds including one ortho-quinone-type icetexane diterpenoid, i.e., przewalskin E (1), one abietane dinorditerpenoid. i.e., przewalskin F (2), and one 7,20-epoxyabietane diterpenoid. i.e., przewalskin G (3), were isolated from Salvia przewalskii MAXIM. The identification and structure elucidation of these compounds were based on 1D- and 2D-NMR spectral-data analysis. It is noteworthy that przewalskin E (1), featured with an 11,12-dioxoicetexane skeleton, represents the second example of a naturally occurring ortho-quinone-type icetexane diterpenoid from Salvia plants.

Abstract:The open silica gel, ODS, and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, along with the semi-preparative HPLC was used to isolate and purify the chemical constituents from Murraya euchrestifolia. The structures of the isolates were elucidated by their physiochemical properties, NMR, and MS spectroscopic data, as well as comparison with literature data. Eighteen compounds were isolated from the CH2Cl2 fraction of the 95% aqueous EtOH extract of M. euchrestifolia, and their structures were identified as sakuranetin (1), eriodictyol-7,4'-dimethyl ether (2), isosakuranetin (3), 5-hydroxy-7,4'-dimethoxyflavanone (4), eriodictyol-7-methyl ether (5), lichexanthon (6), 5,6,7-trimethoxycoumarin (7), 5-hydroxy-6,8-dimethoxycoumarin (8), 8-hydroxy-6-methoxy-3-n-pentylisocoumarin (9), ethyl caffeate (10), 4-hydroxy-3,5- dimethoxycinnamic acid ethyl ester (11), methyl 3-(5'-hydroxyprenyl)-coumarate (12), (E)-coniferol (13), β-hydroxypropiovanillone (14), 3-hydroxy-7,8-didehydro-β-ionone (15), 3β-hydroxy-5α, 6α-epoxy-7-megastigmen-9-one (16), grasshopper ketone (17), and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde (18). Abstract:Four different isolation techniques, conventional hydrodistillation (HD), microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MWHD), microdistillation (MD) and micro-steam distillation-solid-phase microextraction (MSD-SPME), have been used to analyze the volatile constituents from the aerial parts of Salvia rosifolia Sm. by gas chromatography and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. HD and MWHD techniques produced quantitatively (yield, 0.39% and 0.40%) and qualitatively (aromatic profile) similar essential oils. alpha-Pinene (15.7-34.8%), 1,8-cineole (16.6-25.1%), beta-pinene (6.7-13.5%), beta-caryophyllene (1.4-5.0%) and caryophyllene oxide (1.4-4.4%) were identified as major constituents of this Turkish endemic species. Besides, the hydrodistilled oil of S. rosifolia was evaluated for antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities. The hydrodistilled oil of S. rosifolia showed antibacterial activity against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with a MIC value of 125microg/mL. Other human pathogenic microorganisms (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Candida albicans) were also inhibited within a moderate range (MIC=125-1000microg/mL). Antifungal activity of the oil was also observed against the strawberry anthracnose-causing fungal plant pathogens Colletotrichum acutatum, C. fragariae and C. gloeosporioides. No cytotoxicity was observed for S. rosifolia oil up to 25mg/mL against malignant melanoma, epidermal, ductal and ovary carcinoma.

Abstract:Fifteen undescribed diterpenoid quinones salviamilthone A-O ( 1 – 15 ), together with three known diterpenoid quinones ( 16 – 18 ), were isolated from the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge. Their structures were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR data, while the relative and absolute configurations were confirmed by NOESY correlations and comparison between experimental and calculated ECD spectra. In the evaluation of bioactivities, salviamilthone J ( 10 ), salviamone ( 18 ) (10 μM) significantly increased cell viability and decreased the expression of IL-1β in lipopolysaccharide-induced BEAS-2B cells. These data provide the molecular justification for the usage of Salvia miltiorrhiza in treating acute lung injury.

Abstract:(±)-Salvicatone A (1), a C27-meroterpenoid featuring a unique 6/6/6/6/6-pentacyclic carbon skeleton with a 7,8,8a,9,10,10a-hexahydropyren-1 (6H)-one motif, was isolated from the roots and rhizomes of Salvia castanea Diels f. tomentosa Stib. Its structure was characterized by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses along with computer-assisted structure elucidation, including ACD/structure elucidator and quantum chemical calculations with 1H/13C NMR and electronic circular dichroism. Biogenetically, compound 1 was constructed from decarboxylation following [4 + 2] Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction between caffeic acid and miltirone analogue. Bioassays showed that (-)-1 and (+)-1 inhibited nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW264.7 macrophage cells with an IC50 value of 6.48 ± 1.25 and 15.76 ± 5.55 μM, respectively. The structure-based virtual screening based on the pharmacophores in ePharmaLib, as well as the molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations study, implied that (-)-1 and (+)-1 may potentially bind to retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor C to exert anti-inflammatory activities.
[Study of chemical constituents in active parts of Mentha spicata III]

Abstract:Objective: To study the chemical constituents of Mentha spicata. Method: The chemical constituents were isolated by silica gel column chromatography, and identified by physical and chemical characters and spectroscopic analysis. Result: Compounds I - V were obtained and their structures were elucidated as protocatechuic aldehyde (I), protocatechuic acid (II), chrysoeriol (III), 5, 6-dihydroxy-7, 8, 3', 4'-tetramethoxyflavone (IV), nodifloretin (V). Conclusion: Compound I and II were first isolated from the genus Mentha. Compound Ill, IV and V were isolated from M. spicata for the first time.
