Abstract:Four symmetrical diphenylnate liquid crystals were prepared and their structures were confirmed by FT-IR and H-1 NMR spectra. Their liquid crystal properties were tested by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and hot stage polarizing microscop (POM). The crystal structure of Ilia was detemfined by X-ray single crystal diffraction techniques. IIIa is a monoclinic crystal system, space group P2(1)/c with the unit cell parameters: a=18.525(3) angstrom, b=12.196(2) angstrom, c= 12.195(2) angstrom, beta= 97.142(2)degrees, V=2733.7(9) angstrom(3), Z=4, D-c=1.163 Mg/m(3), R=0.0521, R-w=0.1161. The results showed that molecules lead thermotropic liquid crystals properties. The relations among the mesomorphism, oxygen atoms, terminal unsaturated bond, the flexible chain length were investigated.

Abstract:To develop novel oligothiophene-based liquid crystals involving hydrogen bonding, new terthiophene derivatives containing a stearylamide group, N,N'-distearyl-5,5"-dicyano-2,2':5',2"-terthiophene-4,4"-dicarboxamide (DNC18DCN 3T) and N,N'-distearyl-5,5'-dipropyl-2,2': 5',2'-terthiophene-4,4"-dicarboxamide (DNC18 DP3T), were designed and synthesized, and their thermal behavior examined. Although DNC(18)DP3T did not exhibit liquid crystallinity, DNC(18)DCN3T was found to form smectic A phase.

Abstract:In order to adapt to the requirements of rapid response, the design of the liquid crystal celltends to lower thickness. It requests that the birefringence of the liquid crystal tends to be increased and the design of mixed crystal tends to add more concentration of multi-benzene liquid crystal monomer. Since terphenyl liquid crystal has a large birefringence, low rotational viscosity and high clearing point,it becomes an essential component of high birefringence liquid crystal formulations. Common terphenyl liquid crystal generally has neutral dielectric or great polardielectric. This paper studied a class of terphenyl liquid crystal containing vinyl and multi fluorine. They included the classes of Propylene ether and Butene. With respect to the common monomers, they have larger optical anisotro-py Delta n, medium dielectric anisotropy Delta epsilon, higher clearing point CP. In the paper, we have conducted a preliminary analysis to explore the relationship between the performance parameters and the structures of the liquid crystal molecules. We also characterized the liquid crystal structure by the analytical methods like GC-MS and NMR.

Abstract:Four series of tolane liquid crystals containing 2,3-difluorophenylene and terminated by a tetrahydropyran (THP) moiety have been synthesised via multistep reactions based on 4-alkylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids and 4-bromo-2,3-difluorophenol. Their properties were measured by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy, Abbe refractometer and an electrical constants instrument. The results show that the THP-based liquid crystals nT reveal a relatively high value of the birefringence, negative dielectric anisotropy, good solubility and a broad nematic mesophase. The effects of the terminal alkyl chain, the lateral fluoro substituents and the THP terminal group on the mesomorphic and physical properties are discussed. Meanwhile, density functional theory calculations of molecular conformation and polarisability were conducted to correlate the experimental findings.

Abstract:A series of optically active thiadiazole Schiff's bases were prepared and their liquid crystalline properties were studied. Chirality was achieved by introducing an asymmetric carbon atom into the alkoxy group. Thus, 2-(p-active-alkoxyphenyl-imine)-5-(p-n-alkoxy)phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazoles were synthesized. Their structures were characterized using elemental analysis, and IR, H-1 NMR and mass spectroscopies; their thermal properties were determined using DSC and polarized light microscopy. All the compounds are enantiotropic liquid crystals, and most of them exhibited both chiral smectic C* and cholesteric mesophases. Only one of them did not show a smectic C* phase.

Abstract:A new series of the ligands of liquid crystal polymers with T-shaped two-dimensionl mesogens was synthesied by solution condensation polymerization by using 4,4'-(alpha,omega-alkylenedioyloxy)-dibenzol dichlorids with 2, 4-dihydroxy-4'-alkoxyl azobenzene as the monomers. The low molecular weight compounds were analyzed by elementary analysis, IR, H-1-NMR and MS. The ligands were characterized by GPC, DSC, TG, WAXD and polarizing microscopy with a heating stage. It was found that all the ligand of polymers went to liquid crystal phase when heated to their T-m, the threaded texture and, schlieren texture can be observed. Both T-m and T-i of all the ligands change regulary with the increase of the end alkoxy group length and when the flexible spacer unit in the ligand gets longer. It is worth specially being noted that some of the ligands having no end substituent groups were also found to show liquid crystal behaviors, which would be a new subject for further research on the formation mechanism and the texture of such kind of the ligands.

Abstract:A new series of liquid crystalline dimers containing a cholesteryl group were synthesized, exhibiting multiple mesophases including chiral smectic phases (SmX*, SmC* and SmA*), twist grain boundary phases (TGBA* and TGBC*), and chiral nematic phase (N*). Re-entrant phenomenon occurs, which is rarely reported for pure matters of dimeric liquid crystals. The chemical structure and liquid crystal properties of the dimers were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, DSC, POM and XRD. It was in evidence that the length and the parity of the spacer and the length of the terminal tail were the decisive factors of the mesophase behaviours.

Abstract:A series of liquid crystalline polymers with T-shaped two-dimensional mesogenic units were synthesized via low temperature solution polycondensation of 2-(4'-alkoxy-phenyl) hydroquinone with various diacyl dichlorides. The polymers were found to be nematic and shown thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviors through observations using DSC, polarized microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The melting temperature T-m and the isotropization temperature T-i of the polymers change regularly with varying of the monomer structures.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) are such a kind of important materials that influence our life,which are not limited to displays such as televisions and personal computers.Combined with photoresponsive properties,LCs can also enable to develop a great variety of applications in various fields,including flat panel displays,photonics,photo-driven devices,and more recent nanotechnology.LCs demonstrate special characteristics of both mobility of an isotropic liquid and ordered regularity of a crystalline solid,thus termed as intermediate phase.The unique features of LCs provide liquid crystalline materials with interesting properties such as ability to self-assembly,fluidity with long-range order,molecular cooperation motion,birefringence and anisotropy in physical properties (optical,mechanical and electrical),molecular alignment at surfaces induced by external fields,deformation of LC elastomers responding to certain stimuli.Responsive deformation of LC polymers (LCPs) with different alignment of molecules is reviewed.Perspective and further applications in the future of LCPs in the field of micro fluid and micro robot are discussed.

Abstract:A series of dialkylterthiophenes, CH3(CH2)n-TTh-(CH2)nCH3 (TTh ˭terthiophene, n=3,5,7,9,11) were synthesized and characterized. All the dialkyl-substituted terthiophenes display smectic mesophase except dibutylterthiophene exhibiting only a crystal melting. The thermal stability of the mesophase of dialkylterthiophene increases with increasing the length of alkyl chains. The complexation of the dialkyl terthiophenes with Cp*Ru suppresses liquid crystallity and all the complexes becomes amorphous.
Synthesis and Liquid Crystalline Phase Behavior Investigation of Triphenylene Acrylate Intermediates

Abstract:We present a systematical investigation on the synthesis, molecular characterization and liquid crystalline phase behaviors of a series of triphenylene (TP) acrylate intermediates. Based on different reaction activity of variant length of polymethylene spacer, several synthetic protocols have been successfully employed for introducing an acrylate group to the TP core via polymethylene spacer with the methylene number from 0 to 10. The obtained polymerizable TP acrylate intermediates were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS). Furthermore, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) were employed to explore the thermotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior and detailed columnar organizations of the series TP intermediates. Most of the TP acrylates with hexyloxy substituents only exhibited crystalline solid phase, while those with butoxy peripheral groups displayed monotropic or enantiotropic hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline mesophases with one example showing three-dimensional (3D) positionally ordered hexagonal columnar plastic phase. Herein the comprehensive synthesis and systematical comparison study on their liquid crystalline phase behaviors of the series discotic TP acrylate intermediates with variant length spacers would be helpful for guiding the design and preparation of other polymerizable functional (meth)acrylate monomers, and also enhance the in-depth understanding of various hierarchical structures of discotic columnar liquid crystalline polymer materials.

Abstract:The synthesis and properties of a new series of compounds having aromatic amide mesogenic cores are reported. Most of these new compounds are thermotropic mesogens. In consideration of the fact that aromatic amides form crystals of high melting point which is unfavourable for the formation of thermotropic liquid crystals, we make use of lateral substitution to decrease both the packing efficiency and the hydrogen bonding, so that the melting temperature of the aromatic amides is sufficiently depressed. The lateral substituent used in these new compounds is bromine. In order to investigate the influence on properties of the end groups, different alkoxy, alkyl and other groups are used at the two ends of the rod-like molecules. The two ends are either identical or different, with an electron-donating alkoxy as one end and the electron-accepting cyano group as the other. The results indicate that appropriate lateral and terminal substitution is essential for the aromatic amides to form thermotropic liquid crystals. The peculiar mesophase characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern of a SmC phase, but a texture of a nematic phase is also noted.

Abstract:Discotic liquid crystal materials, as organic semiconductor materials, have demonstrated tremendous prospective applications in high-tech fields such as solar cells and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Discotic liquid crystals represented by triphenylene have been extensively researched for their highly ordered self-assembly and self-repairing capabilities. The triphenylene motif, commonly introduced into trimeric discotic molecules as an electron donor, was relatively rare when used as a repeating unit in trimeric discotic liquid crystals. In comparison with triphenylene monomers and dimers, the long-chain-linked triphenylene trimers did not exhibit differentiated mesomorphic properties. In this study, we synthesized a series of triphenylene-triphenylene-triphenylene type discotic liquid crystalline trimers TTPn through Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, connected via σ single bonds. Compared with the triphenylene monomers and their dimers, TTPn demonstrates unique and superior qualities in terms of mesomorphic and photophysical properties. The series of compounds exhibits oblique discotic columnar phases with a broad mesophase range. The TTPn shows blue photo-induced luminescence in solution, with the highest absolute fluorescence quantum yield reaching 66% in solution, and the photoluminescence phenomenon still exists in the film state. Therefore, the TTPn holds potential application value in fields such as liquid crystalline semiconductors and organic light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Using Si-Cl bond linking with rear OH of azobenzene mesogenic units, three types of novel star-shaped liquid crystals were synthesized from SiCl4. The structures of these molecules were established by infrared absorption spectroscopy (IR) and nuclear magnatic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Their liquid crystalline phase behaviors were characterized by polarized microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The applications of these compounds as stationary phases for capillary column gas chromatography are also discussed briefly.

Abstract:In order to obtain liquid crystals with high birefringence (Delta n), a series of new liquid crystals monomers incorporating styrene, a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene ring and diacetylenes, which were highly conjugated along the molecular long axis, were synthesized. Their physical properties were evaluated. As expected, they exhibited high Delta n values of 0.4-0.7 and a low melting point and were of potential use for polymer-dispersed liquid crystal displays (PDLCDs), cholesteric displays and laser beam steering applications.
