Abstract:In this paper, we study the compound binomial model in Markovian environment, which is proposed by Cossette, et al. (2003). We obtain the recursive formula of the joint distributions of T, X(T − 1) and |X(T)| (i.e., the time of ruin, the surplus before ruin and the deficit at ruin) by the method of mass function of up-crossing zero points, as given by Liu and Zhao (2007). By using the same method, the recursive formula of supremum distribution is obtained. An example is included to illustrate the results of the model.

Abstract:Previously it has been shown that some classes of mixing dynamical systems have limiting return times distributions that are almost everywhere Poissonian. Here we study the behaviour of return times at periodic points and show that the limiting distribution is a compound Poissonian distribution. We also derive error terms for the convergence to the limiting distribution. We also prove a very general theorem that can be used to establish compound Poisson distributions in many other settings.

Abstract:This note aims at presenting several new theoretical results for the compound Poisson point process, which follows the work of Zhang \emph{et al.} [Insurance~Math.~Econom.~59(2014), 325-336]. The first part provides a new characterization for a discrete compound Poisson point process (proposed by {Acz{é}l} [Acta~Math.~Hungar.~3(3)(1952), 219-224]), it extends the characterization of the Poisson point process given by Copeland and Regan [Ann.~Math.~(1936): 357-362]. Next, we derive some concentration inequalities for discrete compound Poisson point process (negative binomial random variable with unknown dispersion is a significant example). These concentration inequalities are potentially useful in count data regressions. We give an application in the weighted Lasso penalized negative binomial regression whose KKT conditions of penalized likelihood hold with high probability and then we derive non-asymptotic oracle inequalities for a weighted Lasso estimator.

Abstract:We obtain quenched hitting distributions to be compound Poissonian for a certain class of random dynamical systems. The theory is general and designed to accommodate non-uniformly expanding behavior and targets that do not overlap much with the region where uniformity breaks. Based on annealed and quenched polynomial decay of correlations, our quenched result adopts annealed Kac-type time-normalization and finds limits to be noise-independent. The technique involves a probabilistic blockapproximation where the quenched hit-counting function up to annealed Kac-normalized time is split into equally sized blocks which are mimicked by an independency of random variables distributed just like each of them. The theory is made operational due to a result that allows certain hitting quantities to be recovered from return quantities. Our application is to a class of random piecewise expanding one-dimensional systems, casting new light on the well-known deterministic dichotomy between periodic and aperiodic points, their usual extremal index formula EI=1-1/JT^p(x_0) , and recovering the PolyaAeppli case for general Bernoulli-driven systems, but distinct behavior otherwise. Future and on-going investigations aim to produce and accommodate examples of bonafide nonuniformly expanding random systems and targets approaching their neutral points.

Abstract:We prove a multidimensional Poisson limit theorem in free probability, and define joint free Poisson distributions in a non-commutative probability space. We define (compound) free Poisson process explicitly, similar to the definitions of (compound) Poisson processes in classical probability. We proved that the sum of finitely many freely independent compound free Poisson processes is a compound free Poisson processes. We give a step by step procedure for constructing a (compound) free Poisson process. A Karhunen-Loeve expansion theorem for centered free Poisson processes is proved. We generalize free Poisson processes to a notion of free Poisson random measures (which is slightly different from the previously defined ones in free probability, but more like an analogue of classical Poisson random measures). Then we develop the integration theory of real-valued functions with respect to a free Poisson random measure, generalizing the classical integration theory to the free probability case. We find that the integral of a function (in certain spaces of functions) with respect to a free Poisson random measure has a compound free Poisson distribution. For centered free Poisson random measures, we can get a simpler and more beautiful integration theory.

Abstract:Compound Poisson distributions and signed compound Poisson measures are used for approximation of the Markov binomial distribution. The upper and lower bound estimates are obtained for the total variation, local and Wasserstein norms. In a special case, asymptotically sharp constants are calculated. For the upper bounds, the smoothing properties of compound Poisson distributions are applied. For the lower bound estimates, the characteristic function method is used.

Abstract:We study asymptotic behavior of the moments $M_k(\lambda)$ of the sum $X_1+\dots+X_{N_\lambda}$, where $N_\lambda$ follows the Poisson probability distribution with mean value $\lambda$ and $\{X_j\}$ is a family of i.i.d. random variables also independent from $N_\lambda$. We obtain an explicit expression for the leading term of $M_k(\lambda)$ as $k\to\infty$ and study it in dependence of the asymptotic behavior of $\lambda= \lambda_k$. In application, we establish a concentration property of maximal vertex degree of large weighted random graphs. Another application is related with a variable that arises in the studies of high moments of large random matrices. Finally, regarding three particular cases of probability distribution of $X_j$, we comment on the asymptotic behavior of certain combinatorial polynomials, including the Bell polynomials of even partitions.

Abstract:We derive new upper bounds for the total variation distance between compound Poisson distributions as well as between a random sum and a compound Poisson distribution, and as a result we also obtain upper bounds for the total variation distance between compound Poisson distributions and a sum of independent random variables. These bounds are generalizations and refinements of some well-known bounds in the literature. We also derive upper bounds for the total variation distance between negative binomial distributions of order k and between the negative binomial distributions of order k and compound Poisson distributions. Upper bounds for the total variation distances between the number of success runs of length k in binary Markovian trials and its limiting distributions for several enumeration schemes, are also given.

Abstract:Here, we first propose three-parameter model and call it as the compound zero-truncated Poisson normal (ZTP-N) distribution. The model is based on the random sum of N independent Gaussian random variables, where N is a zero truncated Poisson random variable. The proposed ZTP-N distribution is a very flexible probability distribution function. The probability density function can take variety of shapes. It can be both positively and negatively skewed, moreover, normal distribution can be obtained as a special case. It can be unimodal, bimodal as well as multimodal also. It has three parameters. An efficient EM type algorithm has been proposed to compute the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters. We further propose a four-parameter bivariate distribution with continuous and discrete marginals, and discuss estimation of unknown parameters based on the proposed EM type algorithm. Some simulation experiments have been performed to see the effectiveness of the proposed EM type algorithm, and one real data set has been analyzed for illustrative purposes.

Abstract:Exchangeable sequences of random probability measures (partitions of mass) and their corresponding exchangeable bridges play an important role in a variety of areas in probability, statistics and related areas, including Bayesian statistics, physics, finance and machine learning. An area of theoretical as well as practical interest, is the study of coagulation and fragmentation operators on partitions of mass. In this regard, an interesting but formidable question is the identification of operators and distributional families on mass partitions that exhibit interesting duality relations. In this paper we identify duality relations for a large sub-class of mixed Poisson-Kingman models generated by a stable subordinator. Our results are natural generalizations of the duality relations developed in Pitman, Bertoin and Goldschmidt, and Dong, Goldschmidt and Martin for the two-parameter Poisson Dirichlet family. These results are deduced from results for corresponding bridges.

Abstract:In this study, a new one-parameter discrete distribution obtained by compounding the Poisson and xgamma distributions is proposed. Some statistical properties of the new distribution are obtained including moments and probability and moment generating functions. Two methods are used for the estimation of the unknown parameter: the maximum likelihood method and the method of moments. Additionally, the count regression model and integer-valued autoregressive process of the proposed distribution are introduced. Some possible applications of the introduced models are considered and discussed.

In this note we show how these complex analytic methods can be circumvented, thereby giving a proof of their result which is completely elementary.

Abstract:Sufficient conditions are developed, under which the compound Poisson distribution has maximal entropy within a natural class of probability measures on the nonnegative integers. Recently, one of the authors [O. Johnson, {\em Stoch. Proc. Appl.}, 2007] used a semigroup approach to show that the Poisson has maximal entropy among all ultra-log-concave distributions with fixed mean. We show via a non-trivial extension of this semigroup approach that the natural analog of the Poisson maximum entropy property remains valid if the compound Poisson distributions under consideration are log-concave, but that it fails in general. A parallel maximum entropy result is established for the family of compound binomial measures. Sufficient conditions for compound distributions to be log-concave are discussed and applications to combinatorics are examined; new bounds are derived on the entropy of the cardinality of a random independent set in a claw-free graph, and a connection is drawn to Mason's conjecture for matroids. The present results are primarily motivated by the desire to provide an information-theoretic foundation for compound Poisson approximation and associated limit theorems, analogous to the corresponding developments for the central limit theorem and for Poisson approximation. Our results also demonstrate new links between some probabilistic methods and the combinatorial notions of log-concavity and ultra-log-concavity, and they add to the growing body of work exploring the applications of maximum entropy characterizations to problems in discrete mathematics.

A conditional compound Poisson process approach to the sparse Erdős-Rényi random graphs: moderate deviations

Abstract:We construct a compound Poisson process conditioned on its random summation that represents the sizes of the connected components in the sparse Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,c/n)$. This new representation depicts a connection between the phase transition in the sparse random graph and the condensation transition in the zero-range model. Under this framework, we can derive moderate deviation principles for the maximun component, total number of connected components and empirical measure of the sizes in the non-critical regimes. Large deviation results are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and study fractional versions of three compound Poisson processes, namely, the Bell-Touchard process, the Poisson-logarithmic process and the generalized Pólya-Aeppli process. It is shown that these processes are limiting cases of a recently introduced process by Di Crescenzo et al. (2016), namely, the generalized counting process. We obtain the mean, variance, covariance, long-range dependence property etc. for these processes. Also, we obtain several equivalent forms of the one-dimensional distribution of fractional versions of these processes.
