Abstract:According to the different combination of bridging social capital and bonding social capital,the outcome of social capital in the process of government-guided anti-poverty can be seen from the division of poverty-stricken people into different groups: powerful group,potential group,vulnerable group and delinquent group.Apart from that,the capacity of resources allocation,of information transmission,of signal showing and of resources acquisition have been applied to evaluate the outcome of social capital.This analysis framework has broadened the application prospect in both theoretical and empirical research.

Abstract:Plenty of researches on the role social capital plays against poverty have been done by scholars abroad with rich research findings.These researches are characterized by their multi-paradigms and multi-perspectives.Based on the experience and evidence,theoretical basis,and the main ideas,these researches are classified as the capital paradigm,the system paradigm,and the relation paradigm.According to the difference in focuses,they are grouped as macro perspective,meso perspective,and micro perspective.The classification and summary of the multi-paradigms and multi-perspectives of researches may offer important implications and references for domestic studies of the role of social capital in the Chinese anti-poverty process led by the government.

Abstract:This study presents a brief overview about the development of social capital theories in western countries,and discusses the internal linkage and differences of major social capital conceptions.It points out the actual difficulties to use social capital as an independent approach in community development and community poverty alleviation.The major issue for such difficulties is that the accumulation of social capital(especially bridging and linking capital,which is critical to community economic development) has to heavily rely on actors' socioeconomic status.At last,this study discusses the referential value of social capital in China's community economic research.

Abstract:In recent years,the impact of social capital on economic development has aroused widespread concern in economic circles,but there is little literature on the impact of social capital on urban poverty reduction.This paper uses CGSS database and Logit model to study the impact of social capital on urban poverty reduction,and find out whether social capital as a non-market force strengthen or weaken this urban poverty reduction with the process of market process.The results showed that: social network differences and top which reflect the network quality characteristics can significantly reduce the probability of relative poverty,indicating important poverty reduction effect;With the improvement of market,the impact of social capital for urban poverty reduction will be strengthened,especially the network differences and the network top.Finally,this paper provides three recommendations from the levels of government,non-governmental organizations and community to improve the town relatively poor quality of social capital.

Abstract:The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China clearly regards the prevention and control of environmental pollution as one of the “three key battles” to build a well-off society. This paper analyzes the relationship between social capital and environmental pollution from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. From the theoretical perspective, social capital has two opposite effects on environmental pollution: the suppression and the promotion. The former indicates that the improvement of social capital level reduces the cost of residents’ boycott to pollution and reduces pollution emissions, while the latter manifests that the improvement of social capital worsens environmental pollution due to the ability of polluting enterprises to withstand residents’ boycott. Based on the panel data of China from 2008 to 2016, the empirical results show that social capital has inverted U-shaped characteristics on environmental pollution. Low level of social capital will increase pollution emissions and only when social capital reaches a certain level can it be beneficial to environmental protection. This paper attempts to better understand the functions of social capital in environmental governance and provides constructive proposals on how to exert the governance role of social capital on environmental protection for policy makers. Regions with higher levels of social capital should exert the suppression effect of social capital and regions with low levels should focus on improving the level of social capital, while formal regulation means shall be adopted to control pollution.

Can Social Capital Slow Down the Family's "Poverty Caused by Illness"? ——Microcosmic Empirical Evidence Based on Health Shock

Abstract:The problem of poverty caused by illness in China is very serious, but the research on the role of anti-poverty effect of family social capital has not been paid much attention to. On the basis of theoret-ical hypotheses, and by using the 2013 CHARLS data, and the Probit model and IVProbit model, we empiric-ally test whether the multidimensional social capital can still significantly play a role of anti-poverty effect un-der health shock. Our empirical results show that social capital can play a significant role of anti-poverty ef-fect no matter what kind of health shock happens. Each increase of personal social activities by 0.1 points makes the poverty incidence reduce before and after health shock by 5.1% and 7.5% respectively. Each in-crease of one community activity place makes the poverty incidence reduce before and after health shock by 0.71% and 1.63% respectively. Each increase of the amount of economic transactions among relatives and friends by 50% makes the poverty incidence reduce before and after health shock by 11.9% and 3.9% respect-ively. The role of anti-poverty effect of providing family care time is not affected by health shock, but there is a possibility that the effect is weakened. The role of anti-poverty effect of family lending has always been not significant. Social capital has a significant effect on family poverty caused by illness alleviation. The role of anti-poverty effect of the bridge type social capital which is built by associating with people in different social and economic conditions is stronger than that of the bound type social capital which is built by associating with family and friends in the same social and economic condition. Our research provides microcosmic empir-ical evidence for paying attention to the family subject social capital and giving play to the role of family's in-formal institutional governance poverty caused by illness.
Benefits and Pitfalls of Social Capital for Farmer Cooperatives: Evidence from China

Abstract:This paper conducts an exploratory analysis on the role of social capital in influencing both economic and social performance of farmer cooperatives based on a sample of 156 farmers from 54 vegetable cooperatives in China's Hebei and Zhejiang provinces. Social capital is distinguished into bonding and bridging dimensions, with the former referring to the internal aspect of social capital and the latter the external "Guanxi" (meaning relationship) possessed by core members. The statistical results display that specific dimensions of social capital may not deliver the benefits expected by cooperative practitioners and academics. Both positive and negative effects of social capital on performances of farmer cooperatives are observed. To be specific, bonding social capital is positively associated with common members' economic benefits. Bridging social capital generates beneficial outcomes for the financial and social performances of cooperatives, while exhibiting negative influence on common members' income increase because of member heterogeneity.

Abstract:As a new concept,social capital has come into the research field of economics.Social capital theory may give a convincing explanation about economic transformation of China.And it is helpful to resolve the problems of disequilibrium and conflicts of economic,social and ecological functions in resource-intensive regions.Structural equation model has been used widely in the study of social capital and will play an important role in the future study.In practice,there are some conflicts of the function of economic,social,ecological in resource intensive industry,which leads to injustice in the economic development and has an impact on the self-development of resource-intensive regions.The accumulation of social capital dominated by knowledge capital is the key to resolve the problems,which is worth doing a further research.

Abstract:In the contemporary discourse of sustainable development, the phenomenon of energy poverty emerges as a formidable challenge to the trajectory of human progress in the 21st century. Employing a comprehensive four-period longitudinal dataset spanning from 2018 to 2021, which encapsulates the national key ecological function zones (NKEFZs) in Northeast China, this study utilize two-way fixed effects models and mediating effect model to disentangle the intricate relationship between social capital and energy poverty, while also elucidating the fundamental mechanisms that underlie this association. This study shows that social capital has an inhibitory effect on energy poverty among residential households, a result substantiated by a series of robustness checks. And social capital can indirectly alleviate households' energy poverty by fostering their borrowing and lending behavior and enhancing their energy service perception. Additionally, the impact of social capital on households' energy poverty exhibits heterogeneity contingent upon their information access, business engagement, and housing conditions. This study contributes significantly to the accurate measurement of the magnitude and distribution of multidimensional energy poverty among residential households in NKEFZs in Northeast China. Furthermore, it offers valuable insights for the design of a social capital framework aimed at reducing household energy poverty.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate empirically the effects of different dimensions of social capital on the well-being of farmers in China's undeveloped poverty-stricken areas, and study the equivalent multiple of social capital and income compensation. Design/methodology/approach The paper opted for an exploratory study using the open-ended approach of grounded theory, including 1,176 interviews with rural households in poverty-stricken areas in China. The data were complemented by documentary analysis. Then an econometric model of social capital and farmers' well-being was applied to the data. Findings The results show that the number frequently visiting relatives, reciprocity, participation and trust level are significantly positively related to the well-being of the farmers, and the level of participation in social capital requires the most income compensation, while the level of trust comes second. Originality/value This paper can serve as a template for developing a useful tool that can be fitted to national or regional data for studying the effects of social capital on the well-being of farmers in poor areas or countries and for calculating the concrete equivalent multiple of social capital and income compensation.

Abstract:In Sichuan Tibetan areas, the poor's social capital is characterized by closed social networks and homogeneity, and takes on a constantly weakening trend. As to the poor in Sichuan Tibetan areas, small network of relationships and high homogeneity of cognition has led to locked society, and further solidified economic poverty. Therefore, we should enhance the heterogeneity of social capital, to break the state of locked society in order to achieve purposes of alleviating and eradicating poverty.
A Study on the Health Promoting Effect of Social Capital

Abstract:Based on China’s Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS), this paper uses endogenous Logit model and multilevel analysis to explore the health promotion effects of social capital, including individual effect, community effect and interaction effect. The results show that,(1) both individual effect and community effect of social capital play a significant promoting role for health while the community effect is more obvious.(2) The interaction effect between individual social capital and community social capital is not significant because of the insufficient supply of community public service facilities, and the weakening effect of market civilization and contract spirit on the relationship between individual and the community.(3) There exist different effects among the different samples grouped by gender, age and marital status. Specifically, the health status of the men is relatively high, but health promotion effect of social capital of women is higher than that of men. The older age group tends to give a lower mark on self-evaluated health, but the health promotion effect of social capital of the middle-aged is higher than that of the elder. Living lonely has a negative effect on the health, and the promotion effect is also lower. The paper considers that government should not only complete formal social security system such as medical and health service system and social pension insurance, but also pay more attention to the vita impact of informal social security system as social capital on health of the middle-aged and the elder.
Does the Strength of Social Capital on Poverty Reduction Fall or Rise during Marketization?—Evidence from Rural China

Abstract:Social capital, as a non-market power, has significant effect on poverty. Does the strength of social capital fall or rise during marketization? By studying rural poverty in China, this paper exploits how marketization affects the effects of social capital. We find that: (1) Social networks and public trust contribute significantly to reduce poverty in rural China, especially at community level. (2) Generally speaking, the effect of social capital on poverty falls during marketization, especially the effect of social networks at the household level. But the effects of the social capital at the community level is not be reduced significantly.

Abstract:This paper investigates how three forms of social capital, namely, social norms, social network and trust, influences the effectiveness of land use policies. Both long- and short-term policy outcomes are considered in the proposed analytical framework. Benefiting from a comprehensive household survey dataset covering 17 provinces in China, we adopt multiple measurements for each social capital form and policy outcome in our empirical investigation. We use a specific rural land use policy (i.e. reform to confirm, register and certify rural land rights) as a natural experiment to estimate the effect of social capital. By revealing the complex relationships amongst various forms of social capital and a wide range of policy outcome measurements, our empirical findings confirm the validity, reliability and tractability of the proposed analytical framework. Policy implications are also derived regarding how to utilise social capital to improve the effectiveness of land use policies.
Effects of Social Capital on Technology Innovation: an Empirical Analysis Based on China's Provincial Panel Data

Abstract:This empirical study analy zes how different dimensions of social capital influence China’s technology innovative activities based on China’s provincial panel data from 2002 to 2006.The results show that the cognitive dimensions of social capital trust has a positive influence on the two technology innovative input index: RD expenditures and RD personnel;but the effects on the two are different.Trust has no effect on the number of patent applications;however it has a significant positive impact on the transaction value in the technology market.The structural dimension of social capital the density of non-governmental organizations has different effects on the different technology innovative input indexes;the density of non-governmental organizations shows a significant negative influence on both the technology innovation staff input and the number of patent applications,but a significant positive influence on the transaction value in the technology market.

Abstract:Social capital has played an increasingly important role in regional development. China is a country with high stocks of social capital. Using several different indicators of social capital, this study tries to research the regional disparities in social capital and the influence of social capital on economic growth of China in 1978–2004. Measuring social capital with indicators of associations, charities and blood donation rates, this study finds significant regional disparities in social capital at provincial level in China. Those indicators for social capital are highly correlated with regional economic performance. Statistical analysis shows that social capital has a significant and positive effect on a long-term provincial economic growth. This relationship exists after controlling policy, macro location factors, and per capita GDP in the initial year. The empirical findings indicate that institutions, culture and social relations are critical for regional development in China. Therefore, the creation and support of social capital should be paid more attention to when making regional policy.

Abstract:During three decades of rapid economic development and governmental anti-poverty measures, China achieved considerable success in poverty alleviation. However, because poverty remains a severe problem, this research analysed the causes and implications of poverty as well as the associated social policies, based on official statistics and survey data. Three decades of successful anti-poverty measures, have largely reduced 'absolute poverty', yet 'relative poverty' is still severe and substantial challenges remain, caused by the changing socioeconomic circumstances. To enhance poverty alleviation, relevant social policies should be reformed, including changing the underlying approach from addressing absolute poverty to addressing relative poverty, increasing the beneficiary coverage and raising the level of benefits, increasing public funding and improving the relevant administrative systems.

Abstract:China is a big country of great human relations,thus the social capital plays a very important role in the economic and social areas. This paper analyzes the impact of social capital characterized by social network on Chinese people's preference for redistribution empirically by using CGSS-2008 data. The results show that when the endogenous problem of social capital is considered,using the unit type of the father and mother as the instrumental variable,the social capital has significant negative effect on people's preference for redistribution,which means the bigger the social capital is,the weaker the preference for redistribution is and the higher the degree of recognition of income distribution is.

Abstract:This paper uses social capital theory to analyze the effect of varying levels of social capital on the operations of 132 horticultural cooperatives in Sichuan Province, P.R. China. Social capital, as measured by three factors; trust, social network and standards, had a significant positive effect on registered capital, total fixed assets, rebates, share dividends and product quality authentication, and a significant negative effect on the amount of per share capital.
