Abstract:We study the bosonic excitations in the favorite cubic three flavor crystalline LOFF phases of QCD. We calculate in the Ginzburg-Landau approximation the masses of the eight pseudo Nambu-Goldstone Bosons (NGB) present in the low energy theory. We also compute the decay constants of the massless NGB Goldstones associated to superfluidity as well as those of the eight pseudo NGB. Differently from the corresponding situation in the Color-Flavor-Locking phase, we find that meson condensation phases are not expected in the present scenario.

Abstract:We revisit the issue of color neutrality in effective model descriptions of dense quark matter based on global color symmetry. While the equilibrium thermodynamics of such models is now well understood, we examine the collective modes, focusing on the fluctuations of the order parameter. We point out that the constraint of color neutrality must be carefully generalized in order to obtain physically consistent and well-defined results. Particularly important is that the collective modes associated with order parameter fluctuations couple to charge density fluctuations in the neutral medium. We start by proving explicitly that, in contrast to claims made previously in literature, Nambu-Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken global color symmetry remain exactly massless even after imposing the color neutrality constraint. As the next step, we make the argument general by using effective field theory. We then employ the high-density approximation to calculate the couplings in the effective Lagrangian and thus the Nambu-Goldstone boson dispersion relations.

Abstract:Four different phases of the two-flavor quark system, i.e., the normal quark matter and color superconducting phases with and without the charge neutrality condition, are investigated in the framework of the SU(2) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. It is found that the color superconducting phase without charge neutrality has the lowest thermodynamic potential, and the charge neutral systems have higher thermodynamic potentials. However, the BCS pairing always lowers the system's thermodynamic potential, i.e., for both the charged and charge neutral systems, the superconducting phases always have lower thermodynamic potentials. Compared with the BCS gap Delta(0) for the color superconducting phase without charge neutrality, the BCS gap Delta in the charge neutral color superconducting phase has been largely reduced. When the thermodynamic potential for the charge neutral color superconducting phase equals that in the neutral normal quark matter, the diquark condensate disappears.

Abstract:We investigate neutral quark matter with homogeneous and inhomogeneous color condensates at finite temperature in the frame of an extended NJL model. By calculating the Meissner masses squared and gap susceptibility, the uniform color superconductor is stable only in a temperature window close to the critical temperature and becomes unstable against LOFF phase, mixed phase and gluonic phase at low temperatures. The introduction of the inhomogeneous phases leads to disappearance of the strange intermediate temperature 2SC/g2SC and changes the phase diagram of neutral dense quark matter significantly.

Abstract:We present the dispersion relations for quasiparticle excitations about the color-flavor locked ground state of QCD at high baryon density. In the presence of condensates which pair light and strange quarks there need not be an energy gap in the quasiparticle spectrum. This raises the possibility of gapless color superconductivity, with a Meissner effect but no minimum excitation energy. Analysis within a toy model suggests that gapless color superconductivity may occur only as a metastable phase.

Abstract:The transverse Nernst--Ettingshausen effect and thermopower of hot charge carriers in nondegenerate impure semiconductors placed at high electric and nonquantized magnetic fields in the nondiffusion approximation is studied. Arbitrary heating and mutual drag of electrons and long wavelength phonons interacting with electrons are considered. The spectrum of electrons is assumed to be strong nonparabolic in Kane two--band approximation. The case when the electron concentration is high and frequent interelectronic collisions lead to the equilibrium symmetric part of the electron distribution function with effective electron temperature is considered.

Nambu-Goldstone modes in a lattice Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with multi flavor symmetries

Abstract:We study a lattice Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with SU(2) and SU(3) flavor symmetries of staggered fermions in the Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian formalism. This type of four-fermion interactions has been widely used for describing low-energy behaviors of strongly interacting quarks as an effective model. In particular, we focus on the Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneous breakdown of the flavor symmetries. In the strong coupling regime for the interactions, we prove the following: (i) For the spatial dimension $\nu \ge 5$, the SU(3) model shows a long-range order at sufficiently low temperatures. (ii) In the case of the SU(2) symmetry, there appears a long-range order in the spatial dimension $\nu \ge 3$ at sufficiently low temperatures. (iii) These results hold in the ground states as well. (iv) In general, if a long-range order emerges in this type of models, then there appear gapless excitations above the sector of the infinite-volume ground states. These are nothing but the Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneous breakdown of the global rotational symmetry of flavors. (v) In particular, we establish that the number of the lineraly independent Nambu-Goldstone modes is equal to the number of the broken symmetry generators on the Hilbert space constructed from a certain symmetry-breaking infinite-volume ground state.

Dual properties of dense quark matter with color superconductivity phenomenon

Abstract:In this paper the massless NJL model extended by the diquark interaction channel is considered. We study its phase structure at zero temperature and in the presence of baryon $\mu_B$, isospin $\mu_I$, chiral $\mu_{5}$ and chiral isospin $\mu_{I5}$ chemical potentials in the mean-field approximation. It is shown that the model thermodynamic potential, which depends on three order parameters, $M$, $\pi_1$ and $\Delta$ (where $M$, $\pi_1$, and $\Delta$ -- are, respectively, chiral, charged pion and diquark condensates of the model), is symmetric with respect to the (dual) transformation when $M\leftrightarrow\pi_1$ and simultaneously $\mu_I\leftrightarrow\mu_{I5}$. As a result, on the mean-field phase portrait of the model the chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) and charged pion condensation (PC) phases turn out to be dually conjugate with each other, which greatly simplifies the study of the phase portrait of the model. In particular, the duality between CSB and charged PC phases means that in the $(\mu_I,\mu_{I5})$-phase portrait these phases are mirror-symmetrical with respect to the line $\mu_I=\mu_{I5}$, which at the same time is the symmetry axis of the color superconducting (CSC) phase. Moreover, it follows from our analysis that chiral $\mu_5$ chemical potential promotes the formation of CSC phase in dense quark matter. And together with $\mu_{I5}$ it can generates the charged PC phase even at $\mu_I=0$.

Abstract:It is well known that non-Abelian Majorana zero modes (MZM) are located at vortex cores in a p_{x}+𝒾p_{y} topological superconductor, which can be realized in a 2D spin-orbit coupled system with a single Fermi surface and by proximity coupling to an s-wave superconductor. Here we show that the existence of non-Abelian MZMs is unrelated to the bulk topology of a 2D superconductor, and propose that such exotic modes can result in a much broader range of superconductors, being topological or trivial. For a generic 2D system with multiple Fermi surfaces that is gapped out by superconducting pairings, we show that at least a single MZM survives if there are only an odd number of Fermi surfaces of which the corresponding superconducting orders have vortices; such a MZM is protected by an emergent Chern-Simons invariant, irrespective of the bulk topology of the superconductor. This result enriches new experimental schemes for realizing non-Abelian MZMs. In particular, we propose a minimal scheme to realize the MZMs in a 2D superconducting Dirac semimetal with trivial bulk topology, which can be well achieved based on recent cold-atom experiments.

Abstract:The effective action for Goldstone bosons in the color-flavor locking phase of dense QCD is analyzed. Interaction terms and higher derivatives in the effective action appear to be controlled by different scales. At energies of order of the superconducting gap, the derivative expansion breaks down, while interactions still remain suppressed. The effective action valid at energies and momenta comparable to the gap is derived. Dispersion laws following from this action are such that the energy of Goldstone bosons is always smaller than the gap in the quasiparticle spectrum, and Goldstone bosons always propagate without damping.

Abstract:We investigate the superfluidity and the associated Nambu-Goldstone modes in a three-flavor atomic Fermi gas with SU(3) global symmetry. The s-wave pairing occurs in flavor anti-triplet channel due to the Pauli principle, and the superfluid state contains both gapped and gapless fermionic excitations. Corresponding to the spontaneous breaking of the SU(3) symmetry to a SU(2) symmetry with five broken generators, there are only three Nambu-Goldstone modes, one is with linear dispersion law and two are with quadratic dispersion law. The other two expected Nambu-Goldstone modes become massive with a mass gap of the order of the fermion energy gap in a wide coupling range. The abnormal number of Nambu-Goldstone modes, the quadratic dispersion law and the mass gap have significant effect on the low temperature thermodynamics of the matter.

Abstract:Supersymmetry is assumed to be a basic symmetry of the world in many high-energy theories, but none of the superpartners of any known elementary particle have been observed yet. We argue that supersymmetry can also be realized and studied in ultracold atomic systems with a mixture of bosons and fermions, with properly tuned interactions and single particle dispersion. We further show that in such nonrelativistic systems supersymmetry is either spontaneously broken or explicitly broken by a chemical potential difference between the bosons and fermions. In both cases the system supports a sharp fermionic collective mode similar to the Goldstino mode in high-energy physics, due to supersymmetry. We also discuss possible ways to detect this mode experimentally.

Abstract:We study how the charge neutrality affects the phase structure of three-flavor PNJL model. We point out that, within the conventional PNJL model at finite density the color neutrality is missing because the Wilson line serves as an external ``colored'' field coupled to dynamical quarks. In this paper we heuristically assume that the model may still be applicable. To get color neutrality one has then to allow non vanishing color chemical potentials. We study how the quark matter phase diagram in $(T,m_s^2/\mu)$-plane is affected by imposing neutrality and by including the Polyakov loop dynamics. Although these two effects are correlated in a nonlinear way, the impact of the Polyakov loop turns out to be significant in the $T$ direction, while imposing neutrality brings a remarkable effect in the $m_s^2/\mu$ direction. In particular, we find a novel unlocking transition, when the temperature is increased, even in the chiral SU(3) limit. We clarify how and why this is possible once the dynamics of the colored Polyakov loop is taken into account. Also we succeed in giving an analytic expression for $T_c$ for the transition from two-flavor pairing (2SC) to unpaired quark matter in the presence of the Polyakov loop.

Pairing Fluctuation Effects in a Strongly Coupled Color Superfluid/superconductor

Abstract:We investigate the effects of pairing fluctuations in fermionic superfluids/superconductors where pairing occurs among three species (colors) of fermions. Such color superfluids/superconductors can be realized in three-component atomic Fermi gases and in dense quark matter. The superfluidity/superconductivity is characterized by a three-component order parameter which denotes the pairing among the three colors of fermions. Due to the SU(3) symmetry of the Hamiltonian, one color does not participate pairing. This branch of fermionic excitation is gapless in the naive BCS mean-field description. In this paper, we adopt a pairing-fluctuation theory to investigate the pairing fluctuation effects on the unpaired color in strongly coupled atomic color superfluids and quark color superconductors. At low temperature, a large pairing gap of the paired colors suppresses the pairing fluctuation effects for the unpaired color, and the spectral density of the unpaired color shows a single Fermi-liquid peak, which indicates the naive mean-field picture remains valid. As the temperature is increased, the spectral density of the unpaired color generally exhibits a three-peak structure: the Fermi-liquid peak remains but get suppressed, and two pseudogap-like peaks appears. At and above the superfluid transition temperature, the Fermi-liquid peak disappears completely and the all three colors exhibits pseudogap-like spectral density. The coexistence of Fermi liquid and pseudogap behavior is generic for both atomic color superfluids and quark color superconductors.

Abstract:We consider a U(1) gauge theory on M4×T4 with background magnetic fluxes. We show that a theory including arbitrary fluxes can always be studied in a theory involving only diagonal fluxes by appropriate coordinate transformations. It is found that the number of independent magnetic fluxes is equal to the rank of the classical value of the field strength matrix, rank⟨F⟩ . The number of massless zero modes induced from extra components of higher-dimensional gauge field (Wilson-line scalar field) is also determined by rank⟨F⟩ . We explicitly confirm that the quantum corrections due to the matter fermion to the squared mass of the Wilson-line scalar field cancel out at the one-loop level. For this purpose, we derive the fermion mass spectrum on M4×T4 with arbitrary fluxes. By taking the flux diagonal basis, creation and annihilation operators for Kaluza-Klein quantum numbers are defined appropriately. Abstract:We explore the effects of an applied strong external magnetic field in a three flavor massless color superconductor. The long-range component of the B field that penetrates the superconductor enhances some quark condensates, leading to a different condensation pattern. The external field also reduces the flavor symmetries in the system, and thus it changes drastically the corresponding low energy physics. Our considerations are relevant for the study of highly magnetized compact stars.
