Abstract:Working within an exactly solvable 3 level model, we discuss am extension of the Random Phase Approximation (RPA) based on a boson formalism. A boson Hamiltonian is defined via a mapping procedure and its expansion truncated at four-boson terms. RPA-type equations are then constructed and solved iteratively. The new solutions gain in stability with respect to the RPA ones. We perform diagonalizations of the boson Hamiltonian in spaces containing up to four-phonon components. Approximate spectra exhibit an improved quality with increasing the size of these multiphonon spaces. Special attention is addressed to the problem of the anharmonicity of the spectrum.

Exact Solution to the Quantum Rabi Model Within Bogoliubov Operators

Abstract:The quantum Rabi model can be solved exactly by the Bargmann transformation from real coordinate to complex variable recently [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{107}, 100401 (2011)]. By the extended coherent states, we recover this solution in an alternative simpler and perhaps more physical way without uses of any extra conditions, like Bargmann conditions. In the same framework, the two-photon Rabi model are solved exactly by extended squeeze states. Transcendental functions have been derived with the similar form as those in one-photon model. Both extended coherent states and squeeze states are essentially Fock states in the space of the corresponding Bogoliubov operators. The present approach could be easily extended to study the exact solvability or integrability of various spin-boson systems with multi-level, even multi-mode.

Abstract:Within extended coherent states, a recent exact solution to the quantum Rabi model (QRM) [D. Braak, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 100401 (2011)] can be recovered in an alternative simpler and more physical way, without use of any extra conditions. In the same framework, the two-photon QRM is solved exactly by treating extended squeezed states on an equal footing. Concise transcendental functions responsible for the exact solutions are derived. The isolated Juddian solutions are also analytically obtained in terms of degeneracy. Both the extended coherent states and squeezed states employed here are essentially Fock states in the space of the corresponding Bogoliubov operators, which result in free-particle number operators. The present approach can be summarized concisely in a unified way and easily extended to various spin-boson systems with multiple levels, even multiple modes.
Improved Silbey-Harris Polaron Ansatz for the Spin-Boson Model

Abstract:In this paper, the well-known Silbey-Harris (SH) polaron ansatz for the spin-boson model is improved by adding orthogonal displaced Fock states. The obtained results for the ground state in all baths converge very quickly within finite displaced Fock states and corresponding SH results are corrected considerably. Especially for the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model, the converging results are obtained for 0 < s < 1/2 in the fourth-order correction and very accurate critical coupling strengths of the quantum phase transition are achieved. Converging magnetization in the biased spin-boson model is also arrived at. Since the present improved SH ansatz can yield very accurate, even almost exact results, it should have wide applications and extensions in various spin-boson model and related fields.

Abstract:This paper presents quantum bosonic shortest path searching (QBSPS), a natural, practical and highly heuristic physical algorithm for reasoning about the recognition of network structure via quantum dynamics. QBSPS is based on an Anderson-like itinerant bosonic system in which a boson's Green function is used as a navigation pointer for one to accurately approach the terminals. QBSPS is demonstrated by rigorous mathematical and physical proofs and plenty of simulations, showing how it can be used as a greedy routing to seek the shortest path between different locations. In methodology, it is an interesting and new algorithm rooted in the quantum mechanism other than combinatorics. In practice, for the all-pairs shortest-path problem in a random scale-free network with N vertices, QBSPS runs in O(mu(N) ln ln N) time. In application, we suggest that the corresponding experimental realizations are feasible by considering path searching in quantum optical communication networks; in this situation, the method performs a pure local search on networks without requiring the global structure that is necessary for current graph algorithms.

Abstract:We develop a systematic and efficient approach for numerically solving the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation for an open quantum system that can be strongly coupled to an environment. As an important application, we consider a real-time simulation of a spin-boson model in a strong-coupling regime that is difficult to deal with using conventional methods. We show that the non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger equation can be efficiently implemented as a real-time simulation for this model, so as to give an accurate description of spin-boson dynamics beyond the rotating-wave approximation.

Abstract:One longstanding difficult problem in quantum dissipative dynamics is to solve the spin-boson model in a non-Markovian regime where a tractable systematic master equation does not exist. The spin-boson model is particularly important due to its crucial applications in quantum noise control and manipulation as well as its central role in developing quantum theories of open systems. Here we solve this important model by developing a non-Markovian quantum Langevin approach. By projecting the quantum Langevin equation onto the coherent states of the bath, we can derive a set of non-Markovian quantum Bloch equations containing no explicit noise variables. This special feature offers a tremendous advantage over the existing stochastic Schr\"odinger equations in numerical simulations. The physical significance and generality of our approach are briefly discussed.

Abstract:In this work, we give a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for solving electronic structure problems of molecules using only linear quantum optical systems. The variational ansatz we proposed is a hybrid of non-interacting Boson dynamics and classical computational chemistry methods, specifically, the Hartree-Fock method and the Configuration Interaction method. The Boson part is built by a linear optical interferometer which is easier to realize compared with the well-known Unitary Coupled Cluster (UCC) ansatz composed of quantum gates in conventional VQE and the classical part is merely classical processing acting on the Hamiltonian. We called such ansatzes Boson Sampling-Classic (BS-C). The appearance of permanents in the Boson part has its physical intuition to provide different kinds of resources from commonly used single-, double-, and higher-excitations in classical methods and the UCC ansatz to exploring chemical quantum states. Such resources can help enhance the accuracy of methods used in the classical parts. We give a scalable hybrid homodyne and photon number measurement procedure for evaluating the energy value which has intrinsic abilities to mitigate photon loss errors and discuss the extra measurement cost induced by the no Pauli exclusion principle for Bosons with its solutions. To demonstrate our proposal, we run numerical experiments on several molecules and obtain their potential energy curves reaching chemical accuracy.

Abstract:The relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) and Random Phase Approximation (RPA) methods are self-consistently applied to two issues of current interest. The first application is related to the isospin mixing corrections in the problem of super-allowed 0(+) -> 0(+) beta-transitions and the unitarity of the CKM matrix. The second application concerns the prediction of inclusive neutrino-nucleus cross-sections, where the results of the present model are compared with other approaches.

Abstract:Boson sampling solves a classically intractable problem by sampling from a probability distribution given by matrix permanents. We propose a scalable implementation of Boson sampling using local transverse phonon modes of trapped ions to encode the Bosons. The proposed scheme allows deterministic preparation and high-efficiency readout of the Bosons in the Fock states and universal mode mixing. With the state-of-the-art trapped ion technology, it is feasible to realize Boson sampling with tens of Bosons by this scheme, which would outperform the most powerful classical computers and constitute an effective disproof of the famous extended Church-Turing thesis.

Abstract:Elementary quantum mechanics proposes that a closed physical system consistently evolves in a reversible manner. However, control and readout necessitate the coupling of the quantum system to the external environment, subjecting it to relaxation and decoherence. Consequently, system-environment interactions are indispensable for simulating physically significant theories. A broad spectrum of physical systems in condensed-matter and high-energy physics, vibrational spectroscopy, and circuit and cavity QED necessitates the incorporation of bosonic degrees of freedom, such as phonons, photons, and gluons, into optimized fermion algorithms for near-future quantum simulations. In particular, when a quantum system is surrounded by an external environment, its basic physics can usually be simplified to a spin or fermionic system interacting with bosonic modes. Nevertheless, troublesome factors such as the magnitude of the bosonic degrees of freedom typically complicate the direct quantum simulation of these interacting models, necessitating the consideration of a comprehensive plan. This strategy should specifically include a suitable fermion/boson-to-qubit mapping scheme to encode sufficiently large yet manageable bosonic modes, and a method for truncating and/or downfolding the Hamiltonian to the defined subspace for performing an approximate but highly accurate simulation, guided by rigorous error analysis. In this paper, we aim to provide such an exhaustive strategy. Specifically, we emphasize two aspects: (1) the discussion of recently developed quantum algorithms for these interacting models and the construction of effective Hamiltonians, and (2) a detailed analysis regarding a tightened error bound for truncating the bosonic modes for a class of fermion-boson interacting Hamiltonians.

Efficiently simulating the work distribution of multiple identical bosons with boson sampling

Abstract:Boson sampling has been theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated to show quantum computational advantages. However, it still lacks the deep understanding of the practical applications of boson sampling. Here we propose that boson sampling can be used to efficiently simulate the work distribution of multiple identical bosons. We link the work distribution to boson sampling and numerically calculate the transition amplitude matrix between the single-boson eigenstates in a one-dimensional quantum piston system, and then map the matrix to a linear optical network of boson sampling. The work distribution can be efficiently simulated by the output probabilities of boson sampling using the method of the grouped probability estimation. The scheme requires at most a polynomial number of the samples and the optical elements. Our work opens up a new path towards the calculation of complex quantum work distribution using only photons and linear optics.

Abstract:Dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model is examined using three numerical approaches, namely the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variation with the Davydov D-1 ansatz, the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method within the representation of orthogonal polynomials, and a perturbative approach based on a unitary transformation. In order to probe the validity regimes of the three approaches, we study the dynamics of a qubit coupled to a bosonic bath with and without a local field. Comparison of the up-state population evolution shows that the three approaches are in agreement in the weak-coupling regime but exhibit marked differences when the coupling strength is large. The Davydov D-1 ansatz and the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group can both be reliably employed in the weak-coupling regime, while the former is also valid in the strong-coupling regime as judged by how faithfully the trial state follows the Schrodinger equation. We further explore the bipartite entanglement dynamics between two qubits coupled with individual bosonic baths which reveals entanglement sudden death and revival.

Abstract:Abstract Refining modelled structures to approach experimental accuracy is one of the most challenging problems in molecular biology. Despite many years’ efforts, the progress in protein or RNA structure refinement has been slow because the global minimum given by the energy scores is not at the experimentally determined “native” structure. Here, we propose a fully knowledge-based energy function that captures the full orientation dependence of base–base, base–oxygen and oxygen–oxygen interactions with the RNA backbone modelled by rotameric states and internal energies. A total of 4000 quantum-mechanical calculations were performed to reweight base–base statistical potentials for minimizing possible effects of indirect interactions. The resulting BRiQ knowledge-based potential, equipped with a nucleobase-centric sampling algorithm, provides a robust improvement in refining near-native RNA models generated by a wide variety of modelling techniques.

Efficient Implementation of the Random Phase Approximation with Domain-based Local Pair Natural Orbitals

Abstract:We present an efficient implementation of the random phase approximation (RPA) for molecular systems within the domain-based local pair natural orbital (DLPNO) framework. With optimized parameters, DLPNO-RPA achieves approximately 99.9% accuracy in the total correlation energy compared to a canonical implementation, enabling highly accurate reaction energies and potential energy surfaces to be computed while substantially reducing computational costs. As an application, we demonstrate the capability of DLPNO-RPA to efficiently calculate basis set-converged binding energies for a set of large molecules, with results showing excellent agreement with high-level reference data from both coupled cluster and diffusion Monte Carlo. This development paves the way for the routine use of RPA-based methods in molecular quantum chemistry.

Abstract:Neural-network state representations of quantum many-body systems are attracting great attention and more rigorous quantitative analysis about their expressibility and complexity is warranted. Our analysis of the restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) state representation of one-dimensional (1D) quantum spin systems provides new insight into their computational complexity. We define a class of long-range-fast-decay (LRFD) RBM states with quantifiable upper bounds on truncation errors and provide numerical evidence for a large class of 1D quantum systems that may be approximated by LRFD RBMs of at most polynomial complexities. These results lead us to conjecture that the ground states of a wide range of quantum systems may be exactly represented by LRFD RBMs or a variant of them, even in cases where other state representations become less efficient. At last, we provide the relations between multiple typical state manifolds. Our work proposes a paradigm for doing complexity analysis for generic long-range RBMs which naturally yields a further classification of this manifold. This paradigm and our characterization of their nonlocal structures may pave the way for understanding the natural measure of complexity for quantum many-body states described by RBMs and are generalizable for higher-dimensional systems and deep neural-network quantum states.

Abstract:Self-Consistent RPA is extended in a way so that it is compatable with a variational ansatz for the ground state wave function as a fermionic many-body vacuum. Employing the usual equation of motion technique, we arrive at extended RPA equations of the Self Consistent RPA structure. In principle the Pauli principle is, therefore, fully respected. However, the correlation functions entering the RPA matrix can only be obtained from a systematic expansion in powers of some combinations of RPA amplitudes. We demonstrate for a model case that this expansion may converge rapidly.
