Abstract:Facing significant carbon emissions annually, China requires a clear decarbonization strategy to meet its climate targets. This study presents a MESSAGEix-CAEP model to explore Chinese decarbonization pathways and their cost-benefit under two mitigation scenarios by establishing connections between five energy-intensive sectors based on energy and material flows. The results indicated the following: 1) Interaction and feedback between sectors should not be disregarded. The electrification process of the other four sectors was projected to increase electricity production by 206%, resulting in a higher power demand than current forecasts. 2) The marginal abatement cost to achieve carbon neutrality across all five sectors was 2189 CNY/tCO2, notably higher than current Chinese carbon emission trading prices. 3) The cost-benefit analysis indicates that a more ambitious abatement strategy would decrease the marginal abatement cost and result in a higher net carbon abatement benefit. The cumulative net benefit of carbon reduction was 7.8 trillion CNY under ambitious mitigation scenario, 1.3 trillion CNY higher than that under current Chinese mitigation scenario. These findings suggest that policy-makers should focus on the interaction effects of decarbonization pathways between sectors and strengthen their decarbonization efforts to motivate early carbon reduction.

In this study, measures that lower CO2 emissions from the supply side, demand side, and power grid are discussed, based on which, an integrated optimization model of CO2 mitigation (IOCM) is proposed. Virtual energy, referring to energy saving capacity in both demand side and the power grid, together with conventional energy in supply side, is unified planning for IOCM. Consequently, the optimal plan of energy distribution, considering both economic benefits and mitigation benefits, is figured out through the application of IOCM. The results indicate that development of demand side management (DSM) and smart grid can make great contributions to CO2 mitigation of power sector in China by reducing the CO2 emissions by 10.02% and 12.59%, respectively, in 2015, and in 2020.

Abstract:It's systematically analyzed that energy efficiency optimization technology has been applied in the field of steel industry. The fundamental principal of energy optimization technology is reasonably matching the quality and price of energy as well as energy-dominated systematic energy efficiency management system. Specific measures of energy optimization have been put forward, which include taking high efficiency utilized technology such as energy saving from the original, the production process and recycling of waste heat and waste energy etc., integrating and configuring energy in an optimized way of high efficiency and excellent quality, fully realizing the function of different energy in order to optimize the utilization sequence of energy, and improving the energy medium system by themselves. Finally it is clearly pointed out that the steel industry should pay more consideration about the great deal of energy system which they have used now and an ideal energy evaluation methodology and standard should be built as soon as possible if they want to take full usage of the real role and function of energy in all aspects.

Abstract:Reduction of water pollutant emissions and energy consumption is regarded as a key environmental objective for the pulp and paper industry. The paper develops a bottom-up model called the Industrial Water Pollutant Control and Technology Policy (IWPCTP) based on all industrial technology simulation system and multi, constraint technological optimization. Five policy scenarios covering the business as usual (BAU) scenario, the structural adjustment (SA) scenario, the cleaner technology promotion (CT) scenario, the end-treatment of pollutants (EOP) scenario, and the coupling measures (CM) scenario have been set to describe future policy measures related to the development of the pulp and paper industry from 2010-2020. The outcome of thiS study indicates that the energy saving amount under the CT scenario is the largest, while that under the SA scenario is the smallest. Under the CT scenario, savings by 2620 include 70 kt/year, of chemical oxygen demand (COD) emission reductions and savings of 7443 kt of standard coal, 539.7 ton/year: of ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) emission reductions, and savings of 7444 kt of standard coal. Taking emission reductions, energy savings, and cost benefit into consideration, cleaner technologies like highly efficient pulp washing, dry and wet feedstock preparation, and horizontal continuous cooking, medium and high consistency pulping And wood dry feedstock preparation are recommended.

Abstract:CO2 mitigation in energy power systems has become a research hotspot in the world. The 56th Shuangqing Forum of National Natural Science Foundation of China （NSFC） was held, which is entitled green house gas control technologies in energy power systems based on fossil fuels. Several key issues of CO2 mitigation in energy power systems were discussed deeply, such as combustion, CO2 reforming, car- bon transfer, CO2 capture and storage, and system integration. The scientists proposed some key scientific issues that should be investigated in the next five years, including combustion innovation and CO2 capture, coupling of energy conversion and carbon transfer, engineering thermophysics problems in C02 transporta- tion and storage, and integration of energy power system and COz capture processes. At last some concrete suggestions for a multi-interdisplinary study and major research plan were proposed.

Abstract:The technical roadmap and policies for CO 2 mitigation suitable for China are a common center of attention in the fields of energy, environment, and management science in the country. Emphasizing interaction between technical research and policy research, this work discovers the potential breakthrough in the integrated field. The technical difficulties of recovering CO 2 are pointed out, the mechanism of combining CO 2 recovery with energy conversion is investigated, and the basic principle for integrating an environmental-friendly energy system is discussed. Moreover, the formulation of a new energy system that can recover CO 2 with very low or even zero energy penalty is proposed, while the assessment methodology and model system for the technical roadmap of CO 2 emission control are developed. Finally, a new technical roadmap constructing an energy network suitable for China is proposed, which may provide a new way for the development of sustainable energy and environment technologies.

Abstract:The coal-based energy consumption structure has led to high coal consumption and carbon emissions in China's iron and steel industry, and the task of coal saving and carbon reduction in the steel industry is difficult and urgent. The economic viability of various coal-saving and emission-reduction technologies, the extent of their coal-saving and emission-reduction potential, and the guidance on the adoption of advanced technologies are crucial issues that need to be addressed in the Chinese steel industry. This article employs the Energy-Production ( E -P) analysis method and the Conservation Supply Curve (CSC) model incorporating coal consumption ratio coefficients to systematically analyze coal consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in the overall iron and steel industry and its sub-processes under different scenarios. It calculates the coal-saving emission reduction costs of 32 technologies, evaluates them comprehensively based on their coal-saving and emission-reduction potentials and cost-effectiveness, and categorizes them accordingly. According to the cost of coal saving and emission reduction as the demarcation point, a total of 19 technologies are cost-effective; according to the coal-saving emission reduction potential and cost division, 32 technologies are divided into 6 categories, among which 6 technologies such as sintering waste heat recovery technology can be used as key technologies for popularization and application. Seven technologies, such as efficient preheating technology of ladle, have high cost and low potential, which can be gradually eliminated or improved and upgraded. After the comprehensive promotion of the 32 technologies, the maximum coal saving potential is about 3.453 billion GJ, the CO 2 emission reduction potential is 395 million tons, the total coal consumption of the steel industry can be reduced to about 13.904 billion GJ, and the carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced to 1.179 billion tons.

Greening Cement in China: A Cost-Effective Roadmap

Abstract:Cement is a critical material for urbanization, but its energy-intensive production creates serious potential environmental impacts. As further air pollutant mitigation become More expensive and difficult, 'co-control' measure by new energy-efficient technologies is proposed to bring co-benefits. In this study we conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis to evaluate available new technologies in Chinese cement industry. The analysis verified the findings of recent studies that many technologies have huge co-control potential, but we also found the heterogeneity and conflict in different parameters of certain technologies that has not declared by existing studies. The finding indicates the necessity to design the technology promotion roadmap. We obtained a technology promotion roadmap by establishing a multi-objective optimization model and it proves to be the best solution for achieving energy saving, PM2.5, SO2 and CO2 abatement compared to single-objective optimization models. Rirthermore, pollutant emissions and energy consumption of the cement industry under four control scenarios are projected for 2010-2030. Under integrated measure scenario combining technology promotion and product structure adjustment, energy consumption will drop back to 2006-2007 level by 2030. The major air pollutant emissions will be 44% lower than business-as-usual scenario and the CO2 emission will be reduced by similar to 15%. The annual monetary benefit of technology promotion is estimated to be 396.5 billion RMB Yuan in 2030. The findings verify the co-control strategy and update our understanding of new technologies implementation. The technology promotion roadmap and scenario analysis results are supportable for future policy-making of cement industry. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Cost and Potential of Energy Conservation and Collaborative Pollutant Reduction in the Iron and Steel Industry in China

Abstract:This study investigated the cost and potential of energy conservation and collaborative pollutant emission reduction in the iron and steel industry in China. A total of 24 technologies were selected, and their investments, operation costs, energy saving benefits, abatement benefits, abatement coefficients and popularising rates were collected and calculated using the 2013 data as the baseline. A new parameter, AP(eq), reflecting the characteristics of energy conservation and multi-pollutant collaborative emission reduction was set up. The conservation and emission reduction supply curves (CERSCs) were analysed. These 24 technologies resulted in the abatement of SO2, NOx, PM10, CO2 and AP(eq) to 621.6 kt, 398.9 kt, 390.2 kt, 291.1 Mt and 699.5 kt,, respectively. The influences of discount rates and weight factors on the abatement supply curves were also discussed. Results show that, with the increase in the discount rate, the abatement costs increase and the amount of that abatement cost below zero decreases. Finally, the pollutant reductions in three key areas in China were analysed. The reduction potentials of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta are 107, 79 and 13 kt, respectively, and the corresponding abatement costs are 7.52,-51.54 and -1.76 billion Yuan. Policymalcers can choose suitable and economic technologies according to the calculation of the CERSCs. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:How energy saving and emission reduction measures influence the interrelationship between carbon emissions and environmental sustainability of cement industry is not very clear, and this could lead to trade-off. This study investigates effects of three representative energy saving and emission reduction measures (steam Rankine cycle power generation (SRC), organic Rankine cycle power generation (ORC) and carbon capture and utilization (CCU)) on environmental performance of cement production using an improved emergy analysis and carbon emissions amounting. The proposed approach can investigate resource efficiency and emissions' impact as well as carbon footprint of a system in study simultaneously. A cement enterprise, in Jilin Province in China, as a case, is explored using the proposed combined approach based on scenario analysis. The results illustrate that combination of SRC + ORC can promote environmental sustainability of cement production and carbon emission reduction by 4.61 % and 4.28 % respectively, mainly derived from SRC application (by 4.06 % and 3.81 %), (2) CCU can promote carbon emission reduction by 3.97 % but weaken the environmental sustainability by 2.10 % due to enhancing share of purchased nonrenewable electricity, and (3) combination of SRC + ORC + CCU can promote the environmental sustainability (by 2.43 %) and carbon emission reduction by 8.25 %. In addition, due to strong dependence on nonrenewable resources, combination of SRC + ORC + CCU is still limited in improvement of environmental performance of the industry. In the future, China's cement industry should further enhance environmental performance of CCU and efficiency of ORC, as well as improve the resource structure of this industry.

Steel smelting industry, comprehensive considering the steel utilization, energy conservation and emissions reduction targets, etc., have noticed that the costs in smelting system energy-saving, the importance of the question is, society for steel utilization, can’t bring enough money for the iron and steel smelting industry benefit, and hindered the development of new energy saving technology, increased the energy saving of iron and steel smelting system pressure. Thus it can be seen that cost capital is the main problem of energy saving in modern iron and steel smelting system. Only with financial support can the level of energy saving be improved.

Abstract:Petrochemical production, a resource- and energy-intensive industry, is a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions. As part of the low-carbon transition to net-zero emissions, further efforts and measures are required from petrochemical plants. Here we provide a comprehensive overview of advanced technologies and recent developments in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the petrochemical industries and associated upstream and downstream processes, as well as the challenges and prospects involved. The technologies and strategies were assessed on the basis of their environmental impact, effectiveness, economic and safety aspects. The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and IT-based energy management technologies such as carbon labeling, blockchain and artificial intelligence were also discussed. Based on the examined case studies in typical petrochemical industries, it is clear that a combination of mitigation and advanced technologies is more effective to save energy and resources, improve energy efficiency and build a green and clean industry. Although this study focuses on the petrochemical industries, it also provides insights and relevance for broader industrial sectors worldwide. This study identifies future research directions for the management of greenhouse gas emissions and could promote and support the low-carbon industrial chain and circular economy of the petrochemical industries.
