Abstract:By introducing Co2+ ions as a structural inducer, we have successfully synthesized five new Ln3+-cucurbit[5]urilbased supramolecular assemblies within the cucurbit[5]uril (Q[5]) system with rare-earth elements (Pr3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+ and Dy3+) by solvent evaporation method. A meticulous analysis of the crystal structure uncovers that the aforementioned assemblies constitute isomorphic 3D frameworks, which are stabilized through outersurface interactions of cucurbit[n]uril (OSIQ). Within these frameworks, Q[5] directly coordinates with rareearth metal ions to generate simple "Ln3+-Q[5]" molecular bowl structure. Six of these molecular bowls then arrange themselves to create a 3D honeycomb-like framework with channels occupied by the structure-guiding agent [Co(H2O)6]2+ through H-bond. Additionally, we explored the fluorescence sensing capabilities of the assembly 5 for amino acids, which indicate that it holds promise as a fluorescent sensor material, particularly for detecting L-Tryptophan (L-Try).

Abstract:Three methyl-substituted cucurbituril-based supramolecular assemblies, {Cd2Cl6(C4N3)@TMeQ[6]} 6H2O (1), {Cd(H2O)Cl3(C6N3)@TMeQ[6]}Cl·16H2O (2) and {Zn2Cl6(C4N3)@TMeQ[6]}·10H2O (3), were prepared with N,N′-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)-1,4-butanediamine dichloride (C4N3) and N,N′-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)-1,6-hexanediamine dichloride (C6N3), incorporating a symmetrical α,α′,δ,δ′-tetramethyl-cucurbit[6]uril (TMeQ[6]) using polychloride zinc(II) and cadium(II) anions as structure-directing agents. X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed that all three compounds included three different interactions: cucurbit[n]uril (Q[n])-based host–guest interaction, coordination of metal ion to the active sites of the guest and the outer-surface interaction of Q[n]s.

Abstract:This paper reports on the supramolecular self-assembly of cyclopentano cucurbit[5]uril (CyP 5 Q[5]), L-phenylalanine (L-Phe), and cadmium ions. The crystal structure is characterized using X-ray diffraction. The results show that the complex belongs to a monoclinic system with P 2 1 space group. Cd 2+ and L-Phe are coordinated in two CyP 5 Q[5] portals via hydrogen bonds and ion-dipole interactions, respectively, so that the outer wall of the cucurbit[ n ]uril forms a porous channel. Each channel consists of six supramolecular chains, which may accommodate inorganic anions, such as CdCl .

Abstract:Cucurbituril (CB), a well-known macrocyclic cavitand, has been used extensively to construct supramolecular aggregates. Based on host-guest intertactions, an adamantanyl derivative guest molecule was designed and syn- thesized to prepare a supramolecular amphiphile with cucurbit[7]uril. In aqueous solution, the cucurbit[7]uril based supramolecular amphiphiles self-assemble into well-defined vesicles, and their disassembly can be achieved by addition of excess competitive agent 1-adamantanamine hydrochloride. This vesicle functions as a new nanocapsule to encapsulate molecules within its hollow cavity. Through competitive disassembly of supramolecular amphiphiles, the vesicles behave as a novel drug delivery carrier.
Construction and solvent recognition of cucurbit[5]uril-alkali metal and alkali-earth metal supramolecular self-assembly induced by 2,7-naphthalene disulfonic acid

Abstract:By introducing 2,7-naphthalene disulfonic acid (H2NDA) as a structure-directed agent, four new Q[5]- based supramolecular self-assemblies, namely [K-2(H2O)(4)(Q[5])](2,7-NDA) center dot 4H(2)O (1), [Rb-2(H2O)5(Q[5])](2,7-NDA)center dot 3H(2)O (2), [Mg(H2O)4(Q[5])](2,7-NDA)center dot 8H(2)O (3), and [Ca(H2O)(4)(Q[5])](2,7-NDA)center dot 10H(2)O (4), were prepared under hydrothermal conditions. Single crystal X-ray diffraction results show that the self-assemblies 1 and 2 have the same structure. The coordination of the Q[5] molecule with metal ions forms a"molecular capsule"structure in 1 and 2, while the coordination of Q[5] and Mg2+ in 3 forms a 1:1 simple complex structure. In 4, Q[5] and Ca2+ can directly coordinate to form a 1D Q[5] -Ca(2+)coordination polymer chain structure. The 2,7-NDA2- anions in these structures balance the system charge, and through their outer-surface interactions with Q[5], promote its final construction into a 3D supramolecular structure. In addition, we also studied the fluorescence sensing properties of self-assembly 4, which could be used as quenching fluorescence probes for the organic solvents acetone and DMF. Ring-In-Ring Molecular Assembly with Cucurbit[8] Uril

Abstract:Ring-in-ring complexation is a novel topological structure in supramolecular chemistry. Two macrocyclic compounds with intramolecular donor-acceptor interactions were designed and synthesized with 4,4'-bi-pyridinium, 2,6-dinaphthol and 2,7-dinaphthol as building blocks. Their associations with cucurbit[8] uril were investigated by means of UV-Vis and H-1 NMR. The spectra results show that intramolecular charge transfer( CT) interaction exsits in aqueous solution of these two macrocycles, and cucurbit[8] uril can bind the two macrocycles. The binding result in the increase of charge transfer(CT) absorption strength and red shift of CT absorption peak, indicating the formation of stable ring-in-ring complexes. These ring-in-ring complexes are new topological structures for cucurbit[8]uril.

Abstract:Coordination supramolecular assemblies of monohydroxycucurbit[7]uril ((HO)Q[7]) with alkaline earth metal ions (AE2+) have been formed in aqueous HCl solution in the presence of tetrachloride cadmium anions ([CdCl4]2-) as a structure directing agent. The driving force for the assembly could be attributed to the interaction of the positive electro-potential outer-surface of (HO)Q[7] molecules with [CdCl4]2- anions and ionic dipole interaction of the hydroxyl of (HO)Q[7] molecules with [CdCl4]2- anions. Moreover, the porous structure of the (HO)Q[7]/AE2+-based coordination supramolecular assemblies could result in potential applications in the selective sorption of polar volatile organic molecules, which may be useful in molecular sieves, sensors, absorption and separation.

Abstract:Three organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on decavanadates: H4V10O28 center dot(HMTA-CH2OH)2 center dot 6H(2)O (1), H4V10O28 center dot(HMTA-CH2OH)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (2) and H2V10O28 center dot(HMTA)(2)center dot[Co (H2O)(6)](2)center dot 6H(2)O (3) (HMTA = hexamethylenetetramine) have been crystallized from a new liquid phase reaction. These complexes display 3D supramolecular networks through various hydrogen bonds and generate typical binodal topologies. Complex 1 was further used as a functional precursor to prepare V, N-containing mesoporous carbon foams (V, N-MCFs), which exhibit highly ordered mesostructures with specific surface areas of 653 m(2) g(-1) and uniform pore sizes of 2.9 nm. Cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge tests indicate that V, N-MCFs possess much higher capacitance in comparison with pure mesoporous carbon foams (MCFs).

Abstract:Employing bis(p-sulfonatocalix[4]arenes) (bisSC4A) and N',N''hexamethylenebis(1-methyl-4,4'-bipyridinium) (HBV(4+)) as monomer building blocks, the assembly morphologies can be modulated by cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) (n = 7, 8), achieving the interesting topological conversion from cyclic oligomers to linear polymers. The binary supramolecular assembly fabricated by HBV(4+) and bisSC4A units, forms an oligomeric structure, which was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) experiments. The ternary supramolecular polymer participated by CB[8] is constructed on the basis of host-guest interactions by bisSC4A and the [2]pseudorotaxane HBV(4+)@CB[8], which is characterized by means of AFM, DLS, NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV/Vis spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. CB[n] plays vital roles in rigidifying the conformation of HBV(4+), and reinforcing the host-guest inclusion of bisSC4A with HBV(4+), which prompts the formation of a linear polymer. Moreover, the CB[8]-participated ternary assembly could disassemble into the molecular loop HBV(2+)@CB[8] and free bisSC4A after reduction of HBV(4+) to HBV(2+), whereas the CB[7]-based assembly remained unchanged after the reduction. CB[8] not only controlled the topological conversion of the supramolecular assemblies, but also improved the redox-responsive assembly/disassembly property practically.

Abstract:A planar tritopic 120° ammonium salt—1,3,5-tri(4-aminophenyl)benzene hydrochloride—was synthesized. Each of the three protonated amine moieties can bind with one of the carbonyl portals of a cucurbit[5]uril analogue (Me 10 TD[5]) in water, as proven by ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis), fluorescence emission, and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Such self-assembling behavior resulted in formation of a supramolecular hexagonal network, as confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Abstract:In this work, we investigated thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) complexes of cucurbit[8]uril {Q[8]} in HCl solutions with the addition of various transition metal chlorides as structure inducers. Consequently, three complexes with similar supramolecular structures built up with both direct coordination and second-shell interactions have been synthesized and structurally characterized. In the presence of CdCl2/RuCl3, {[ThCl(H2O)(6)](2)(Q[8])}center dot(Q[8])center dot 2(CdCl4)center dot 2Cl center dot 6H(2)O (Q[8]-Th-Cd) or {[Th(H2O)(7)](2)(Q[8])}center dot(Q[8])center dot 2 (RuCl5)(2)O center dot 3(HCl)center dot 22H(2)O (Q[8]-Th-Ru) were synthesized while {[U(H2O)(7)](2)(Q[8])}center dot(Q[8])center dot 5(ZnCl4)center dot 8H(2)O (Q[8]-U-Zn) was prepared with U(IV) ions generated in situ by direct reduction of uranyl nitrate with zinc metal. All these complexes have Q[8] directly coordinated to Th(IV)/U(IV) ions, one on each side of the two Q[8] portals in bidentate mode. Subsequent second-shell interactions between (Th-2-Q[8])/(U-2-Q [8]) complexes and Q[8] molecules form one-dimensional polymers which are further connected through C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl [Cd/Ru/Zn chloride species] interactions forming extended supramolecular networks. In the structures of (NH4)4[(V4O12)·(Me10CB[5]@0.5H2O)2]·∼15H2O (1) and (NH4)4[(H2V10O28)·(Me10CB[5]@H2O)2]·∼16H2O (3), tetranuclear {V4O12}4– or decanuclear {H2V10O28}4– clusters are sandwiched by (NH4)2@Me10CB[5] closed molecular capsules, through hydrogen-bonding interactions, whereas compound 2, formulated as Li4(H2O)6[(H2V6O18)·(Me10CB[5]@H2O)2]·∼14H2O, is built by hexanuclear {H2V6O18}4– clusters that are covalently sandwiched by Li2@Me10CB[5] half-open molecular capsules in a way similar to thoset of 1 and 3. Abstract:A new kind of supramolecular polymer 3 was prepared by supramolecular self-assembly of quaternized poly-4-vinylpyridine derivatives 2 with cucurbituril[6] (CB[6]) in water at room temperature. The chemical structure of 3 was confirmed by H-1 NMR, IR, elemental analysis and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD): CB[6] beads are localized round aliphatic chain of 2, and combine N+ by non-covalent bonds. The properties of 3 were researched by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), UV-vis measurements. The results show that 3 has higher thermal stability and stronger absorption band than the parent polymers.

Abstract:A new decavanadate compound consisting of one decavanadate polyanion [V10O28](6-), two protonated piperidinium cations [C5H12N](+), two doubly protonated N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediammonium cations [C6N2H18](2+) and four lattice water molecules, namely, [(C5H12N)(2)][(C6N2H18)(2)][V10O28]center dot 4H(2)O, has been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic (IR, UV-vis and ESR) studies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(l)/n and Z = 2, with a = 11.1267(18) angstrom, b = 16.854(3)angstrom, c= 12.973(2)angstrom, and beta = 95.426(2)degrees. The cations, anions and lattice water molecules are assembled by hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture. The DNA-binding property of the compound was preliminarily investigated by using fluorescence spectrum, and the results indicating that the interaction mode between the compound and herring sperm DNA (HS-DNA) might be groove binding with the quenching constant of I 20x 10(4). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about the DNA-binding study of decavanadate compounds.

Abstract:Since the first reportal on decamethylcucurbit[5]uril (Me10Q[5]) in 1992, substituted cucurbit[n]urils have attracted considerable research interest. In this study, the host-guest modes between the tetramethyl cucurbit[6]uril (TMeQ[6]) as a host and 4-chloroaniline and 4,4'-diaminostilbene (G1 and G2) as guests were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, ITC, UV-Vis spectrum, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry analyses. The experimental results showed that TMeQ[6] formed a 1 : 1 inclusion compound with G1, and the carbonyl portal of TMeQ[6] formed a 1 : 1 self-assembly with G2. Further, multi-dimensional supramolecular frameworks were formed driven by weak interaction forces in the system (hydrogen bonding, C-H⋯π interactions, ion-dipole interactions, and dipole-dipole interactions).

Abstract:Supramolecular self-assemblies are molecular aggregates formed by the combination of multiple molecules via intermolecular noncovalent bonding interactions. The synergy of hydrogen bonds and weak intermolecular interactions endows them with specific structures and functionalities. In this paper, 1H NMR spectroscopy, HPLC-QTOF mass spectrometry and other characterization methods were used to investigate the interaction modes of cyclobutanocucurbit[5]uril (CyB5Q[5]) and six aromatic amine compounds. The results showed that the negative electrostatic portal carbonyls of CyB5Q[5] interacted with the guest molecules via hydrogen bonding. The benzene ring in the guest molecules interacted with the methylene groups on the outer surface of CyB5Q[5] via CH···π interactions. [ZnCl4]2– anions acted as a structure-directing agent and participated in the ion-dipole interactions with the positive electrostatic outer surface of CyB5Q[5]. Three weak intermolecular interactions synergistically constructed a series of multi-level supramolecular self-assembly materials.

Abstract:The binding behavior of cucurbit[8]uril(Q[8]) and p -hydroxybenzoic acid(p-HBA) has been investigated using 1 H NMR titration experiments, UV-Vis absorption, isothermal titration calorimetry(ITC), and X-ray crystallography. Results revealed that the Q[8] can accommodate two p -HBA molecules to form a 1:2 host-guest inclusion complex in solution, namely ( p -HBA) 2 @Q[8]. From a poorly scattering crystal, we were able to identify two symmetry unique Q[8] rings, but with different p -HBA fillings. The structure can be represented as Q[8]+1.5 p -HBA, which gives Q[8]@(p-HBA) 2 ·Q[8]@ p -HBA as the structural formula. This supramolecular structure was screened for its ability to capture iodine. The experimental results showed that the adsorption efficiency of the supramolecular organic framework material for iodine capture was 43.8%, with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 223.3 mg/g.
