Abstract:Chinese society is characterized by emerging fragmentation and by the coexistence of traditional and Western values, goals and norms. In this multifaceted environment bi‐cultural selves, which encompass social and individual orientations, may emerge. The aim of this paper is to explore if features of bi‐cultural selves concerning interactions, emotions, and values are reflected in online public discussions in China. In order to address this question, we explored two of the most popular bulletin board systems (BBSs): Tian Ya and Feng Huang Forums. BBSs attract almost one third of Internet users in China and provide these users with a forum to carry out public dialogue; BBSs are thus an ideal place to study how the self is socially shaped in public communication. A sample of 6109 messages was subjected to quantitative content analysis. Results show that twofold self‐construal, corresponding to the individual‐ and social‐oriented self, are (also) detected in BBSs forum content: direct and polemic content coexist with conciliatory content; ego‐focused and other‐focused emotions are almost equally as frequent as one another; and traditional values are evoked together with the quest for truth and individual rights. Moreover, three typologies of Internet users (proactive, ambivalent, and follower), which were identified on the basis of the quality of their online interactions, show different patterns of emotions and values. We may thus conclude that alternative ways of constructing self‐other and self‐society relationships currently coexist in China and that these alternative views confront each other on BBS forums.

Abstract:With the approach of implicit social cognition,this paper examines the predictive validity of self-concept for SWB based on the investigation of the structures of both self-concept and SWB.The conclusions show that among Chinese college students(1) Self-concept consists of dual components,an implicit component and an explicit component;(2) SWB is a model of dual components,an implicit component and an explicit component;(3)The model of self-concept predicting SWB is that the explicit self-concept can only predict explicit SWB while implicit self-concept can only predict implicit SWB.

Abstract:Explicit and implicit self-esteem,two components of self-esteem, are the combination of different levels of the two components as self-esteem structure.The central purpose of the present study was to the moderating effects of self-esteem on the relationship between life events and depression.The results show that individuals with high explicit/implicit self-esteem construct will be buffered against the effects of stressful life events and will experience less depression,while it's not the case for individuals with high explicit/low implicit self-esteem,low explicit/high implicit self-esteem and low explicit/implicit self-esteem construct.The perspective in the future work of SES was discussed.

Abstract:Social media services have become increasingly important in Chinese people's daily lives, and among them, WeChat is one of the most popular applications. There have been studies examining individuals' practices of self-presentation and identity production in various online platforms, and they have found the impact of anonymity on users' presentation and construction of self. However, little is known about whether users present their actual self or construct new identities different from those in their offline life. To fill this gap, this study explores the association between expression of personality traits on circle of friends and their actual personality traits in offline life. Participants were 93 college students from China. Their personality traits were measured through Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory, and their posts on circle of friends platform were extracted and split into words by Chinese Lexical Analysis System. The results showed consistency in the dimension of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness, except for neuroticism, suggesting that the contents posted on circle of friends platform can reflect the user's real personality traits. As an instrumental tool developed in this study, the semantic cues were further discussed regarding its usefulness in evaluating subjects' personality traits.
Exploring Online Polarization Phenomenon:Content Analysis of Four Major Chinese BBS Forums

Abstract:This paper attempts to introduce the concept of"polarization"into the examination of online political communication,aiming to describe,analyze and compare the distributions of extreme attitudes in different BBS forums(Qiangguo,Maoyan,Tianya and Sina).The results indicate that attitude polarization is significantly associated with the forum and issue categories.The forum assembling more radicals is more likely to be polarized, while the forum with more moderates shows the opposite trend.As to issues,the right - wing forum is more likely to be polarized when discussing"the Party and government",on the contrary to the left - wing forum. Furthermore,it is also found that IDs with higher motivation to keep posting are more likely to go extremes in the discussion.Furthermore,the more similarity of opinion,the higher degree of polarization exists.

Abstract:With the rapid development of science and technology and the popularity of the Internet, social media has become an indispensable part of people’s daily l ives. Whether sharing life with friends or getting news information, social media has deeply penetrated into our social life, constantly affecting our cognition of society and self. Based on cluster analysis, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the ory and agenda-setting theory, this paper adopts a questionnaire survey method to sample users of nine platforms, including WeChat, Today’ Headlines, Weibo, QQ, TikTok, bilibili, Zhihu, Baidu Post Bar and Tianya Community. A total of 350 valid samples were collected, and the influence mechanism of social cognition and happiness was analyzed, revealing the potential effects of the content and form of social media on users’ cognition and emotions. Finally, the author puts forward some suggestions from different angles and puts forward the shortcomings of this study to provide a reference for later researchers.

Abstract:This study examines the cyber audience's perception of social media users' persona based on their online posts from a cognitive meaning-making perspective. Participants (N = 158) answered questions about their personal characteristics and provided their 20 most recent Facebook status updates. Two groups of viewers, who viewed either the text-only or multimedia version of the status updates, answered questions about the Facebook users' personal characteristics. The viewers' perceptions of Facebook users deviated from the users' self-perceptions, although user characteristics that serve social motives were more accurately perceived. Multimedia viewers were more accurate than text viewers, whereas the latter showed a greater consensus. Gender and ethnic differences of Facebook users also emerged in online person perceptions, in line with gendered and cultured characteristics. These findings shed critical light on the dynamic interplay between social media users and the cyber audience in the co-construction of a digitally extended self.

Abstract:The exploration of the true nature of the self started from the very beginning of Eastern and Western civilizations.However,it was less than 100 years ago that this popic began to be seriously studied within the range of scientific psychological research.In spite of the great achievements made by Westernscholars,they fall short of an adequate explanation for the self-concept of the Chinese.Based on previous research work of Yang et al.,the current study discussed the many facts of Chinese people's self-concepts.We analyzed the four dimensions of the structure of Chinese peoples' self-concepts in order to better understand the exceptional aspects of Chinese people's psychology and behavior.We also discussed some theoretical implications for the study of the relationship between culture and self,and possible future work regarding to this topic.

Abstract:This study investigated the relationship between subjective/objective socioeconomic status (SES) and self/society-oriented subjective well-being (SWB) and the moderation effect of communication activity patterns in a nationally representative sample of Chinese citizens. We found that both subjective and objective SES were related to SWB, but the association varied by SES type and age group. Three kinds of communication activity patterns emerged across different age groups: balanced, mixed, and singular. A complex moderation effect of communication activity patterns also shaped the relationship between SES and SWB. The implications of these findings are discussed in the context of evolving Chinese culture and society.

Abstract:Purpose Researchers continue to address the concept of self-disclosure because it is foundational for helping social networking sites (SNS) function and thrive. Nevertheless, the authors' literature review indicates that uncertainty remains around the underlying mechanisms and factors involved in the self-disclosure process. The purpose of this research is to better understand the self-disclosure process from the lens of dual-process theory (DPT). The authors consider both the controlled factors (i.e. self-presentation and reciprocity) and an automatic factor (i.e. social influence to use an SNS) involved in self-disclosure and broaden The authors proposed a model to include the interactive facets of enjoyment. Design/methodology/approach The proposed model was empirically validated by conducting a survey among users of WeChat Moments in China. Findings As hypothesized, this research confirms that enjoyment and automatic processing (i.e. social influence to use an SNS) are complementary in the SNS self-disclosure process and enjoyment negatively moderates the positive relationship between controlled factor (i.e. self-presentation) and self-disclosure. Originality/value Theoretically, this study offers a new perspective on explaining SNS self-disclosure by adopting DPT. Specifically, this study contributes to the extant SNS research by applying DPT to examine how the controlled factors and the automatic factor shape self-disclosure processes and how enjoyment influences vary across these processes – enriching knowledge about SNS self-disclosure behaviors. Practically, the authors provide important design guidelines to practitioners concerning devising mechanisms to foster more automatic-enjoyable value-added functions to improve SNS users' participation and engagement.

Abstract:Presenting selves on social networking sites (SNSs) is a common phenomenon. SNSs provide people with free and convenient platforms for self-presentation. Focusing on WeChat, a popular SNS in China, the current study investigated how causality orientations (autonomy, control and impersonal orientations) were linked to both frequencies and strategies of online self-presentation. We also explored the mediating roles of basic psychological needs satisfaction/frustration in the focal relationships. A total of 200 WeChat users participated in our survey. The results showed that people with control and impersonal orientations held high frequencies of self-presentation. Basic psychological needs frustration mediated the positive relationships between control and impersonal orientations and self-presentation frequencies. A content analysis of WeChat Moments collected from 101 participants further revealed that an autonomy orientation facilitated the satisfaction of psychological needs and decreased self-derogation strategies of self-presentation. However, impersonal orientation decreased self-enhancement strategies and increased self-derogation strategies through psychological needs frustration. The findings highlight the importance of SNS users' psychological characteristics for understanding their online self-presentation behaviors.

Abstract:Cyberbullying is an important issue which prevails among children and adolescents. The present study aimed to investigate the association between network anonymity and cyberbullying behavior and examine the mediating role of network morality and the moderating role of self-control in the linkage of network anonymity and cyberbullying behavior. A total of 620 participants were recruited from three high schools in southeast China and were required to complete a questionnaire measuring network anonymity, cyberbullying behavior, network morality, and self-control. A moderated mediation model was conducted by using PROCESS Macro for SPSS 3.5. The results showed that network anonymity was negatively associated with cyberbullying behavior among Chinese adolescents. Network morality mediated the association and self-control moderated the indirect association between network anonymity and cyberbullying behavior via network morality. These findings indicate that improving the network morality and self-control of adolescents with the joint efforts of individuals, families, government, and society as a whole may be an effective intervention strategy for cyberbullying behavior under the framework of digital citizens.

Abstract:The present study examined how engaging in public interactions via WeChat Moments (i.e., interactions all WeChat contacts can access) was related to the emotional well-being of Chinese seniors and emerging seniors (50 years or older). Results of an online survey (N = 506) demonstrated that perceived educational self-network discrepancy of WeChat network moderated the relationship between public interactions and emotional well-being such that only at a high level of perceived educational self-network discrepancy public interactions exhibited a significant negative relationship with emotional well-being. Additionally, the interaction between public interactions and perceived educational/social class self-network discrepancy on emotional well-being was further moderated by the participants’ age. Specifically, the relationship between public interactions and emotional well-being was only significant and negative at high levels of perceived educational/social class self-network discrepancy among older Chinese seniors and emerging seniors, whereas this relationship was not significant at any level of perceived educational/social class self-network discrepancy among their younger counterparts. This study develops the scholarship on social networking services and well-being by suggesting that the responses one receives from their online network can have a critical impact on their well-being and provides implications about extending socioemotional selectivity theory.
How Past Cyber Victimization Affects Bystanders' Position Taking in Offline Bullying Situations: A Moderated Mediation Model of Self-concept and Social Support

Abstract:To date, research has rarely addressed the association between individuals' past cyber victimization and their position taking as bystanders in offline bullying situations, much less the psychosocial mechanism underpinning that association. By applying a social-ecological diathesis–stress model, the present study marked an initial effort to examine the direct and indirect relationships between past cyber victimization and two types of offline bystander behavior—probullying and defending—considering the possible mediation effect of domain-specific self-concept and the moderation effect of teacher and peer support among children in China. Structural equation modeling and group comparison analysis were conducted in a sample of 1,706 primary and secondary school students aged 8–17 years old ( M = 11.69, 44% girls). The results indicated that cyber victimization positively related to offline probullying behavior but negatively related to offline defending behavior. Emotional, behavioral and social self-concept fully mediated cyber victimization's effects on offline probullying behavior, whereas behavioral, social, and physical self-concept partially mediated those effects on offline defending behavior. Last, both teacher and peer support moderated the effects of cyber victimization and domains of self-concept on offline bystander behavior via certain paths. Findings recognize the dynamic, fluid nature of children's involvement in bullying across roles and over time. Findings also highlight the importance to differentiate the specific mediation effect of domains of self-concept and the moderation effect of teacher and peer support. Both contributions are expected to enrich empirical and theoretical perspectives on bullying and provide insights for bullying prevention and intervention programs.

Abstract:Intense competition requires that social media service providers execute two major business strategies: exploiting current functions while simultaneously exploring incremental innovation. Realization of these strategies is related to two types of member behavior: reinforced use and varied use. Drawing on identity theories, we examine the common and differential effects of two levels of social self-identity—relational identity and social identity—on reinforced and varied use and the moderating role of inertia on their effects on social media usage. Our results reveal that, although both identities have similar effects on usage behavior, users with higher social identities are more oriented toward variety seeking, while those with stronger relational identities are more oriented toward reinforcement. Inertia negatively moderates the impacts of social identity on social media use, but not the relationships between relational identity and social media use. The current research contributes to theory by decomposing social media usage into reinforced and varied use and reveals the common and differential influences of two levels of social self-identity on user behavior. Social media service providers should focus more on social identity to promote varied use and focus more on relational identity when they want to enhance reinforced use.

Abstract:Social network sites (SNSs) allow young people to experiment with and present different aspects of themselves during important periods of self-concept development. Interestingly, whether SNSs have negative or positive effects on self-concept clarity (SCC) is inconclusive. We propose that SNS use may simultaneously produce negative and positive effects on SCC, depending on how people use it and the social connection quality created on-line. Specifically, the suppressing mediation model reveals that the direct effect of SNS use intensity on SCC is negative, whereas the indirect effects via perceived social support and self-esteem are positive, suggesting these variables may suppress the negative effect of SNS use on SCC. Our framework helps to explain how SNS contexts influence identity development in young people.

Abstract:In the era of the internet, everyone wants to stand out and be seen as unique. Social media accounts have become like virtual ID cards, where people shape their image and show off their personality. However, in an age of increasingly open and transparent information, the challenge of safeguarding user privacy on social media platforms has grown. To meet the demand for anonymous social interaction and emotional expression, a group of users on the platform Xiaohongshu has emerged, taking a contrast approach. They use the same profile pictures and nicknames to hide their identities online, trying to avoid algorithms that track their data. This group, known as "momo," has emerged as a result. This paper, based on Goffman's dramaturgical theory, uses methods like in-depth interview to observe and analyze the anonymous social behavior of "momo" users. It aims to analyze the underlying motives driving the reconstruction of virtual identities through secondary anonymity, investigating users' efforts to safeguard their personal social accounts, their current status, and the resulting impacts. Additionally, the study highlights the potential online risks associated with collective psychology and decentralized responsibility within the "momo" community. Hence, both platforms and individuals are urged to enhance their sense of social responsibility and elevate their media literacy to safeguard online security.

Abstract:In the era of omnimedia, the online world has formed a new public opinion field where the public expresses their opinions and emotion, accompanied by constant development and evolution of social media, and then, cyber bullying has increased exponentially. Public attitudes towards reversal events news and cyber bullying in the era of omnimedia are deeply explored and analyzed according to the research on typical cases of cyber bullying—“The China Jiangsu Cake Shop Event” in the paper. This event has undergone a process of emergence, fermentation, condemnation, reversal, and sustained cyber bullying, and some netizens played the role of internet violators in this public opinion event. Weibo internet violence participants are interviewed and sampled through semi-structured interviews to study their thinking habits, thinking ways, and behavioral patterns when dealing with online events. Meanwhile, theoretical assumptions about the causes of their behavior are proposed through summarization, so as to further explore the intervention and handling methods of cyber bullying from the perspective of psychological influencing factors.
Message framing in social networking sites

Abstract:Online social networking sites represent significant new opportunities for Internet advertisers. However, results based on the real world cannot be generalized to all virtual worlds. In this research, the moderating effects of need for cognition (NFC) and knowledge were applied to examine the impact of message framing on attitudes toward social networking sites. A total of 216 undergraduates participated in the study. Results reveal that for social networking sites, while high-NFC individuals form more favorable attitudes toward negatively framed messages than positively framed messages, low-NFC individuals form more favorable attitudes toward positively framed messages than negatively framed messages. In addition, low-knowledge individuals demonstrate more favorable attitudes toward negatively framed messages than positively framed messages; however, the framing effect does not differentially affect the attitudes of high-knowledge individuals. Furthermore, the framing effect does not differentially affect the attitudes of high-NFC individuals with high knowledge. In contrast, low-NFC individuals with low knowledge hold more favorable attitudes toward positively framed messages than negatively framed messages.
Personalizing Content Moderation on Social Media: User Perspectives on Moderation Choices, Interface Design, and Labor

Abstract:Social media platforms moderate content for each user by incorporating the outputs of both platform-wide content moderation systems and, in some cases, user-configured personal moderation preferences. However, it is unclear (1) how end users perceive the choices and affordances of different kinds of personal content moderation tools, and (2) how the introduction of personalization impacts user perceptions of platforms' content moderation responsibilities. This paper investigates end users' perspectives on personal content moderation tools by conducting an interview study with a diverse sample of 24 active social media users. We probe interviewees' preferences using simulated personal moderation interfaces, including word filters, sliders for toxicity levels, and boolean toxicity toggles. We also examine the labor involved for users in choosing moderation settings and present users' attitudes about the roles and responsibilities of social media platforms and other stakeholders towards moderation. We discuss how our findings can inform design solutions to improve transparency and controllability in personal content moderation tools.
