Abstract:The design of a 5 kW distributed grid-connected proton exchanged membrane(PEM) fuel cell power system is introduced.The system structure and main circuit configuration are given.Then the control design based on weighted average current feedback for grid current control and the design of the energy management unit are introduced.Finally,the experimental results upon a prototype are given to verify the design.From the experimental results,we know that the proposed system can operate well under both stand-alone and grid-connected modes.The fuel cell safety can be guaranteed by the energy management unit by compensating the dynamic power during load transition.

Abstract:The polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell system is considered to be an ideal alternative for the internal combustion engine, especially when used on a city bus. Hybrid buses with fuel cell systems and energy storage systems are now undergoing transit service demonstrations worldwide. A hybrid PEM fuel cell city bus with a hierarchical control system is studied in this paper. Firstly, the powertrain and hierarchical control structure is introduced. Secondly, the vehicle control strategy including start-stop strategy, energy management strategy, and fuel cell control strategy, including the hydrogen system and air system control strategies, are described in detail. Finally, the performance of the fuel cell was analyzed based on road test data. Results showed that the different subsystems were well-coordinated. Each component functioned in concert in order to ensure that both safety and speed requirements were satisfied. The output current of the fuel cell system changed slowly and the output voltage was limited to a certain range, thereby enhancing durability of the fuel cell. Furthermore, the economic performance was optimized by avoiding low load conditions.

Abstract:The power system of a fuel cell city bus was designed and its experimental study was carried out. The motor power was calculated from the requirements of dynamic performance; an energy hybrid configuration was designed and its main components were selected; and the dynamic performance and fuel economy were tested using an on board performance test system. The test results show that the dynamic performance of this fuel cell city bus can meet the requirements of urban driving, and the fuel economy is better than that of the traditional gasoline bus.

Abstract:A state-of-the-art Chinese fuel cell city bus, using a hybrid power system is proposed. This comprises a proton exchange membrane fuel cell and Ni/MH batteries to combine the high energy density of fuel cells with the high power density of batteries. A dc/dc converter is placed between the fuel cell and the battery to control the electric power flow. This paper presents a novel control strategy for efficiency of the fuel cell operation and optimization of the hybrid power system for the bus. The control strategy is able to regulate the output current of the fuel cell and the charging current or voltage for the battery while limiting the discharge current of the battery. It can achieve a higher efficiency, longer fuel cell lifetime, and higher drive performance. The hybrid fuel cell power system and the proposed control strategy were verified by using dynamometer and road test experiments. The experimental results demonstrated that the control strategy has great flexibility and generality, and also validated that the peak power capacity of the active hybrid power source and the vehicle drive performance can be significantly enhanced.

Abstract:The development of a CNG-fueled series hybrid electric city bus is presented.Emphatically the selection of CNG engine,the structure design of auxiliary power unit with clutch and other key technologies in development are discussed.The results of road test with typical city driving cycle show that CNG-fuelled series hybrid electric city bus has the features of less exhaust emissions and low fuel consumption.

Abstract:A 200 kW powertrain platform was developed to test performance of a fuel cell engine in simulated city bus conditions.The platform used both water resistance and electrical drive loads.The fuel cell engine operating modes on the powertrain platform could then be simulated for actual driving conditions on a city bus.Problems about careful matching of components to protect the system are studied and realistic test conditions for the fuel cell engine are provided.Experimental results show that the large power fuel cell engine can be efficiently tested on the platform.

Abstract:Fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles are attracting increasing attention and research. However, the durability of fuel cell systems (FCS) is the main bottleneck in commercial application. A plug-in fuel cell city bus was developed by our group, and it completed several months of demonstration operation. A two-stage flowchart was proposed to clarify the FCS degradation analysis. The average cell voltage decline rate is approximately 346 μV/h at a current density of 120 A, under which the initial voltage is about 0.7 V. The estimated lifetime in the third stage reaches the design target. The final electrochemically active surface areas are approximately 80% of the initial value. A detailed degradation analysis of fuel cell voltage uniformity is presented, and a five-region degradation otherness analysis is proposed for performance uniformity analysis. The difference of equivalent resistance has been verified to be the main factor in degradation otherness of the regions and in system performance degradation.

Abstract:Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicle has recently become one of the focuses in the development of electric vehicles. China has launched a large project-Fuel Cell City Bus. The City Bus is a series Fuel Cell hybrid electric vehicle. All the components of the power-train have their own Electronic Control Unit (ECU). They communicate with the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) through the Controller Area Network (CAN). VCU is the core of the power-train, it makes decisions according to the information from the driver and other ECUs. The control strategy of the VCU is one of the key technologies. In this paper, the design of the control strategy is divided into two main modules and many blocks. Some of the blocks are presented in detail. The control strategy is tested and calibrated on the hybrid power-train test bench. The test results show that the control strategy can meet the request of the City Bus.

Abstract:The powertrain of a hybrid fuel cell city bus consists of a 60-kW fuel cell engine, battery packs, a boost DC/DC converter connecting the fuel cell engine with the DC power bus and an induction motor. Using the advanced modeling tools EASY5®, this paper gives the vehicle longitudinal model of the fuel cell city bus firstly. Then, the vehicle system control strategy is obtained based on this vehicle longitudinal model. Finally, the simulation results are also compared with that of the prototype vehicle road test to validate the EASY5® model and the control strategies. © EVS-22 Yokohama, Japan.

Abstract:Fuel cell hybrid vehicles' sustained development and commercialization are contingent on the reliability and durability of the fuel cell engines. In August 2008, official trial of the three proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell hybrid city buses commenced in a commercial-operation urban-route in Beijing for one year. In this paper, data from the performance analysis of the automotive fuel cells used in those city buses are presented and analyzed. The durability and reliability of the fuel cell engines under realistic conditions were evaluated by analyzing the standard deviation of the single-cell fuel cell voltages and by estimating the voltage vs. current characteristics obtained using the recursive least squares fitting method. After studying the degradation status by analyzing fitted results from the measured data, it is concluded that the fuel cell engines' performance meets the standard imposed by the driving conditions of the Beijing urban-routes, but that their performance degradation necessitates maintenance in order to ensure normal operation.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a research project aimed at developing and evaluating the viability of fuel cell vehicles for urban public transit applications and investigating ways to commercialize them. Considering a low-floor bus design and high efficiency of powertrain, one of the salient characteristics of the proposed fuel cell/battery hybrid bus is the E-drive axle, which integrates two near-wheel permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) in the rear axle. As an important part of the vehicle's powertrain, the E-drive axle was employed to drive the vehicle, capture the breaking energy and match the required speeds of the differential. The configuration and parameters of the powertrain of the hybrid fuel cell/battery bus are given in detail. To extend the life of the fuel cell stacks, the change in the output power of fuel cell stacks is controlled to be gradual via a DC–DC converter depending on the energy management strategy, which was described in this paper. An energy analysis based on a chosen driving cycle has been conducted to study the efficiency of the proposed powertrain, which shows that the hydrogen consumption of the bus is 13.29 km/kg. Also, the road test results indicated the tractive capabilities and maneuverability of the bus can reach the design specifications.

Abstract:Fuel cell hybrid bus (FCHB) can eliminate emission and reduce energy consumption, especially under urban driving conditions; however, the costs of vehicle as well as of operation are currently too high. Plug-in FCHB provides additional benefits to reduce both the costs of vehicle and operation by downsizing fuel cell and hydrogen storage components, and utilizing grid energy for driving. There could be types of power train configurations for a FCHB, and as for a plug-in, there could be different designed EV range, which gives many possible combinations. For each of the reasonable combination, the global efficiency was analyzed under required vehicle performances and the given urban driving cycle in Beijing, the power train parameters were optimized taking into account the system complexity and operation cost, resulting in data base which help to make the best choice. Based on the analysis, system design of a Plug-in FCHB was completed, the power of fuel cell and weight of hydrogen storage are significantly reduced. For the given system design, the requirements of battery pack and fuel cell system, the operation cost, and even the durability of fuel cell will be affected by the operation mode and control parameters. Since the daily operation distance and driving cycle of a city bus is most likely pre-determined, a well balanced control algorithm can be carried out to reduce the requirements of battery and fuel cell, and hence the technical difficulties and cost, or in other words, the system durability could be improved. A fuel cell bus consists of various components, such as fuel cell stacks, power batteries, DC/DC converter, electronic motor and etc. A distributed control system is developed for the fuel cell bus which has been facing many challenges from complex electromagnetic environment, demands of on-line monitoring and diagnosis, wide working temperature range, energy dynamic optimization (EDO) ability and etc.

Abstract:Based on a 12m long fuel cell(FC) city bus,the features of FC +Ultracapacitor(FC+C) drive system are investigated.After the structure of FC+C power system is proposed,the problem of parameter matching of complete vehicle is discussed.Then a simulation model for complete vehicle is set up,and a simulation is carried out on the performance and fuel economy of the complete vehicle.The results indicate that FC+C power system can meet the performance requirements of city bus with fuel economy even better than its foreign counterpart.

Abstract:Fuel cell hybrid city buses are set to play a prominent role in public traffic applications by offering a more energy efficient and less polluting drive-train alternative to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. During the past ten years the Chinese university - industry - collaboration organization developed several fuel cell hybrid city buses. Three of them were demonstrated in the Beijing Olympic Games of 2008, and caused great attention. However, the hybrid powertrain needs to be improved, so as to fulfill the vehicle power requirement, prolong the working life time of the fuel cell stacks, and keep the battery charge sustaining. Similar to the old one, the new generation consists of two fuel cell stacks, a traction battery and an electric motor. The differences reflect in three aspects. Firstly, the two stacks are regulated independent with each other. Secondly, a real-time applicable average power prediction algorithm of the electric motor is exploited. Thirdly, the output power of each stack is determined in accordance with the states, which are estimated on-line. A novel energy management strategy considering average electric motor power prediction, SOC balancing, battery temperature feedback control, fuel cell resistance estimating is exploited. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Abstract:City buses using polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells are considered to be the most likely fuel cell vehicles to be commercialized in China. The technical specifications of the fuel cell systems (FCSs) these buses are equipped with will differ based on the powertrain configurations and vehicle control strategies, but can generally be classified into the power-follow and soft-run modes. Each mode imposes different levels of electro-chemical stress on the fuel cells. Evaluating the aging behavior of fuel cell stacks under the conditions encountered in fuel cell buses requires new durability test protocols based on statistical results obtained during actual driving tests. In this study, we propose a systematic design method for fuel cell durability test protocols that correspond to the power-follow mode based on three parameters for different fuel cell load ranges. The powertrain configurations and control strategy are described herein, followed by a presentation of the statistical data for the duty cycles of FCSs in one city bus in the demonstration project. Assessment protocols are presented based on the statistical results using mathematical optimization methods, and are compared to existing protocols with respect to common factors, such as time at open circuit voltage and root-mean-square power.

Abstract:Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell is favored in automotive applications because it is clean, efficiency and quiet. Performance of a fuel cell-powered vehicle depends on two aspects, the component sizing and the control strategy. The former determines how good a vehicle can be, and the latter decides the degree of exploiting system potential. This paper presents the influence of primary parameters of the hybrid powertrain on vehicle performance. Generally speaking, the performance of a vehicle can be evaluated using following indicators: the maximal speed that can be reached, the accelerating time from zero to a certain speed, the maximal climbing angle, the mileage in a certain condition and the hydrogen consumption in a specific cycle. When the vehicle moves, the fuel cell system fulfills the stationary power requirement, and the battery supplies the accelerating power and recycles brake energy. The vehicle perfolinance is affected by parameters of the hybrid powertrain, e.g. the maximal power of PEM fuel cell system, the PEM fuel cell average efficiency, the battery charging/discharging resistances, the battery open circuit voltage and the vehicle auxiliary power. A theoretical model describing the relationship between these parameters and vehicle performance is firstly proposed. The model is verified by several prototypes of fuel cell city buses developed in past years. Influence of system parameters on vehicle performance is explained in detail. Several suggestions for improving the entire system perfoonance are proposed. Copyright Form of EVS25.

Abstract:With ever growing concerns on energy crises and environmental issues, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell is favored in automotive applications because it is clean, efficient and low noise. A fuel cell hybrid powertrain is composed of a fuel cell system as the primary power source, a battery as the secondary power source and an electric motor. In order to improve the reliability, a distributed control system that can be preserved even under faulty cases is necessary. This paper presents an active fault tolerance control system (AFTCS) for a fuel cell/battery hybrid powertrain applied to a city bus. The AFTCS consists of a system for fault detection and diagnose and a reconfigurable controller. Algorithms to detect and isolated three kinds of important faults are introduced. The real-time applicable reconfigurable controller is exploited to recover the pre-fault system performance as much as possible. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Abstract:For hybrid power system composed of a fuel cell engine and a group of Ni-H batteries,a new control method with a bi-directional power converter is proposed.On the base of analyzing the output characteristic of the fuel cell engine,an external characteristic of the bi-directional power converter is designed,making the Ni-H batteries automatically adjust their charging or discharging currents.As a result,the output power of the hybrid system is controlled adaptively,obtaining stable outputs of I-t and U-t processes of the power system.
