Abstract:As labor shortages and safety regulations become more prominent, the need for human-in-the-loop automation of excavators is increasing. To meet this demand, we have developed a comprehensive modeling method for the excavator arm using nonlinear optimization approaches, including a simplified model that maps the task space to the joint space, as well as an equivalent model that maps the joint space to the actuator space. These models were then used to build a feedforward-PID joint velocity controller and a joint trajectory controller combined with position feedback, which forms the core of our proposed semi-automatic control system for the excavator arm. Our deployment scheme is simple and efficient, and has been deployed on two excavators of different makes and sizes. Experiments show that our deployment scheme performs well on both excavators, with an average error of 0.05 rad/s for the velocity controller and less than 5 cm for the trajectory controller. Using our semi-automatic system, we have completed demonstration experiments for precise digging and grading operations. A demonstration video can be found at https://youtu.be/N6I0WZGSF68.

Abstract:As the advances in computer control technology keep emerging, robotic hydraulic excavator becomes imperative. It can improve excavation accuracy and greatly reduce the operator's labor intensity. The 12-ton backhoe bucket excavator has been utilized in this research work where this type of excavator is commonly used in engineering work. The kinematics model of operation device (boom, arm, bucket, and swing) in excavator is established in both Denavit-Hartenberg coordinates for easy programming and geometric space for avoiding blind spot. The control approach is based on trajectory tracing method with displacements and velocities feedbacks. The trajectory planning and auto dig programis written by Visual C++. By setting the bucket teeth's trajectory, the program can automatically plan the velocity and acceleration of each hydraulic cylinder and motor. The results are displayed through a 3D entity simulation environment which can present real-time movements of excavator kinematics. Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine and skeletal animation are used to give accurate parametric control and feedback. The simulation result shows that a stable linear auto dig can be achieved. The errors between trajectory planning command and simulation model are analyzed.

Abstract:The measure theories and methods of tilt angle and face angle are introduced combining with the composing principle and design of the transmitter of No-Dig navigating instrument.For tilt angle,the single axes accelerate sensor is used and put emphasized on the method that remove the install error;for face angle,the photo electricity face sensor designed by ourselves is adopted.Through the skilled using and innovated research,the measured parameters can meet the need of underground operations.

Abstract:This paper proposes the design and control scheme of a new engineering excavator robot to improve the automation level of excavation work. The excavator robot is mounted on a towing platform and transported by a tractor to arrive at the designated area for work. It consists of four motion systems, which are designed under the condition that the structural requirements are met. In addition, the control scheme of the excavator robot is introduced to achieve motion control. According to the overall plan, we complete the manufacturing of the excavator robot and improve the solution of excavation.

Abstract:This paper referred to the National Key Basic Research Program of China (grant no. 2014CB046306), Key Fundamental Research on the Unmanned Mining Equipment in Deep Dangerous Coal Bed, as the topic background and showed the unmanned fully mechanized excavation face for deep coal seam proposed for higher requirements related to efficiency, automation, and intelligentization of the roadheader. Research and development on fully mechanized excavation face remote reproduction and remote control systems is discussed in this paper. The systems comprise the airborne control system, the industrial supervisory control computer, the Linux operating systems and the CAN bus communication. By the optical fiber and the airborne computer, the supervisory control software platform is used to transmit data and control remotely the openness of signals for the roadheader; thus, it has extensive application prospect, which provides technical support for unmanned excavation equipment, which really achieve development of fully mechanized excavation face machinery aimed at the direction of upsizing, intelligentization, and unmanned property.
Research on autonomous navigation system of greenhouse electric crawler tractor based on LiDAR

Abstract:The application of autonomous navigation technology of electric crawler tractors is an important link in the development of intelligent greenhouses. Aiming at the characteristics of enclosed and narrow space and uneven ground potholes in greenhouse planting, to improve the intelligence level of greenhouse electric crawler tractors, this paper develops a navigation system of electric crawler tractors for the greenhouse planting environment based on LiDAR technology. The navigation hardware system consists of five modules: the information perception module, the control module, the communication module, the motion module, and the power module. The software system is composed of three layers: the application layer, the data processing layer, and the execution layer. The developed navigation system uses LiDAR, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and wheel speed sensor to sense the greenhouse environment and the crawler tractor's information, employs the Gmapping algorithm to build the greenhouse environment map, and utilizes the adaptive Monte Carlo positioning algorithm for positioning. The simulation test of different global path planning algorithms in Matlab shows that the A* algorithm obtains the optimal overall global path. In the scene of map 5, the path planned by the A* algorithm is the most significant, and the number of inflection points is reduced by 40.00% and 87.50%, respectively; meanwhile, the path length is the same as that of the Dijkstra algorithm, but the runtime is reduced by 68.87% and 81.49%, respectively; compared with the RRT algorithm, the path length is reduced by 7.27%. Therefore, the A* algorithm and the Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) method are used for tractor navigation and obstacle avoidance, which ensures global path optimality while also achieving effective local path planning for obstacle avoidance. The test results suggest that the maximum lateral deviation of the built map is 6 cm, and the maximum longitudinal deviation is 16 cm, which meets the requirement of map accuracy. Additionally, the results of the navigation accuracy test indicate that the maximum lateral deviation of navigation is less than 13 cm, the average lateral deviation is less than 7 cm, and the standard lateral deviation is less than 8 cm. The maximum heading deviation is less than 14°, the average heading deviation is less than 7°, and the standard deviation is less than 8°. These results show that the developed navigation system meets the navigation accuracy requirements of electric crawler tractors in the greenhouse environment.

Abstract:Staff safety is not assured due to the indoor substation's high environmental risk factor. The Chinese State Grid Corporation has been engaged in the intelligentization of substations and the employment of robots for inspection tasks. The autonomous navigation and positioning system of the mobile chassis is the most important feature of this type of robot, as it allows the robot to perceive the surrounding environment information at the initial position using its own sensors and find a suitable path to move to the target point to complete the task. Automatic navigation is the basis for the intelligentization of indoor substation robots, which is of great significance to the efficient and safe inspection of indoor substations. Based on this, this paper formulates a new navigation system, and builds a chassis simulation environment in the Robot Operating System (ROS). To begin with, we develop a novel hardware and sensor-based chassis navigation system experimental platform. Secondly, to conduct the fusion of the odometer and inertial navigation data, the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is used. The map's creation approach determines how the environmental map is created. The global path is scheduled with the A* algorithm, whereas the local path is scheduled with the Dynamic Window Method (DWA). Finally, the created robot navigation system is applied to an auxiliary operation robot chassis suited for power distribution cabinet switch and the navigation system's experimental analysis is conducted using this platform, demonstrating the system's efficacy and practicability.

Research on ROV Navigation and Positioning System Based on Measured Data Replay

Abstract:Aiming at the demand of domestic navigation system for ROV, an engineering prototype of ROV navigation and positioning system including terminal software and fiber optic compass is developed. The system is mainly composed of three parts: embedded operation mode, simulation operation mode and data analysis module. It can completely record the data of ROV working environment based on time sequence, and generate the measured data file, which can be used to replay the ROV environment data precisely in the simulation operation mode to provide convenient and consistent experimental data, and then provide a efficient data analysis methods for the debugging of ROV navigation algorithm. The sea trial results show that the system effectively reproduces the underwater test data, and through data playback simulation, the navigation algorithm parameter debugging is completed efficiently. The system can suppress the USBL noise level by 80%, effectively deal with output anomaly of USBL, and effectively assist ROV with underwater investigation, installation and other engineering operations.

Abstract:We present a terrain traversability mapping and navigation system (TNS) for autonomous excavator applications in an unstructured environment. We use an efficient approach to extract terrain features from RGB images and 3D point clouds and incorporate them into a global map for planning and navigation. Our system can adapt to changing environments and update the terrain information in real-time. Moreover, we present a novel dataset, the Complex Worksite Terrain dataset, which consists of RGB images from construction sites with seven categories based on navigability. Our novel algorithms improve the mapping accuracy over previous methods by 4.17–30.48 and reduce MSE on the traversability map by 13.8–71.4 . We have combined our mapping approach with planning and control modules in an autonomous excavator navigation system and observe improvement in the overall success rate. Based on TNS, we demonstrate the first autonomous excavator that can navigate through unstructured environments consisting of deep pits, steep hills, rock piles, and other complex terrain features. In addition, we combine the proposed TNS with the autonomous excavation system (AES), and deploy the new pipeline, TNES, on a more complex construction site. With minimum human intervention, we demonstrate autonomous navigation capability with excavation tasks.

Abstract:Abstract China’s huge mineral outputs support the national economy and people’s livelihood. However, the mining operation is rough and the safety accident happens frequently. Consequently, the demand for unmanned mining operations is urgent, which is of great significance to safe production. Facing the complex operation scenarios of open-pit mines, an unmanned construction system framework is proposed based on intelligent construction machinery. On this basis, an unmanned excavation subsystem is designed and developed based on the hydraulic excavator, and an unmanned transportation subsystem is designed and developed based on the mining truck. Equipped with advanced sensors and controllers, the unmanned excavation subsystem and the unmanned transportation subsystem possess sensing, decision-making, and control abilities by using AI algorithms. The experiment of the unmanned construction systems is successfully conducted on the open-pit mine test site. This study provides equipment and technical support for improving the intelligent level of mine construction and ensuring safe production for the open-pit mine.

Abstract:In this paper, a navigation system for autonomous mobile robots is proposed. Our navigation system is a hybrid of behaviour-based and model-based navigation systems. In our system, a behaviour-based subsystem is in charge of low-level reactive actions, and a model-based subsystem is responsible for high-level planned actions. If there are obstacles in the way, the navigation system will use our obstacle avoidance algorithm to navigate around these obstacles and keep the robot moving towards the destination. On the basis of our experimental results, our navigation system can navigate the robot to the destination effectively.

Abstract:The six‐crawler driving mechanism plays a crucial role in the operation of large machines such as bucket‐wheel excavators, dumping machines, and mobile crushing stations, as it serves functions like bearing, movement and steering. The driving characteristics of this mechanism directly influence the safety and efficiency of these machinery systems. To enhance the design methodology for multi‐crawler machinery, improve path controllability, and achieve adaptive driving, a satellite navigation control system for six‐crawler machinery was developed based on the principles of real‐time kinematic (RTK) satellite positioning. This system utilizes the distance deviation and heading angle deviation between the actual path and the predetermined path of the six‐crawler machinery as inputs to a fuzzy proportion integration differentiation (fuzzy PID) controller. This controller regulates the deviation angle of the steering crawler and the driving speeds of each track, thereby ensuring precise path tracking control. To evaluate the path tracking control performance under both straight and curved driving conditions, a virtual prototype model of the six‐crawler mechanical system was established, and co‐simulation analysis was conducted. In addition, an experimental platform for path tracking control of six‐crawler machinery was established to validate the efficacy of the satellite navigation system. The actual tracking data obtained from various driving conditions and initial deviations demonstrated that the RTK satellite navigation path tracking control system exhibited excellent control performance.

Dynamic Navigation Technology for Cross-regional Harvesters

Abstract:In China, cross-regional harvesting operation was generated during agricultural mechanization. It improves the efficiency of crop harvesting and the usage of machineries, and increases the income of the farmers. While the cross-regional operation suffers from several key problems that cannot be resolved by traditional navigator: a) location monitoring for center dispatching, b) path guiding for emergency repairing, c) information exchange between the center and the terminal, d) digital map suitable for urban usage is not detailed enough for agricultural areas. In order to solve the problems, a new dynamic navigation technology is used to develop the cross-regional harvester monitoring and dispatching system. The C/S system, which consists of visual GPS terminal, wireless network, server, and monitoring terminal, is established by the authors. Based on the real-time position of the harvesters, the system could provide them location-based dynamic information. The monitoring terminal could send the navigation information including the destination and path to GPS terminal via defined protocol. When the GPS terminal receives the information, it displays the task message and draws the destination and path on the map. Then the driver could reach the destination just following the specified path. It is convenient to allocate and dispatch the harvesters, especially for emergency repairing with time limited. A dynamic navigation experiment with 30 cross-regional harvesters in June 2010 shows that the new dynamic navigation technology can fulfill the harvesters needs of monitoring dispatching, emergency repairing and information service, and the system can provide good information service for the management of harvester groups, as well as the operation and transferring of a single harvester.

Abstract:The design ideas and process of a remote visualization and control system for dam construction vehicles is elaborated.The following three key parts as data processing and transmission,C/S platform,and control system of the construction vehicles are analyzed and designed.The newly proposed system provided precise GPS position,real-time video surveillance,data statistics and analysis,and other functions.Field application shows that this system has characteristics of good stability,high real-time performance,and friendly human-machine interface.Moreover,it improved the efficiency of the management regulation and ensured the quality and efficiency of dam construction.

Abstract:After analysis of dredging process and requirements for dredging operations, the design and implementation of an expert system were presented in detail, that was aimed to realize dredging process optimization and fault prevention. Primary aspects of the dredging expert systems such as function and structure design, knowledge presentation and inference mechanism were also presented. A system developed based on the scheme presented herein was introduced. Experimental results show that it can effectively reduce the variation of the dredging process parameters and keep constantly the production of dredging operations at a comparatively high level.

Abstract:With the emergence and application of various unmanned platforms, standardized navigation technology has become a new hot spot. Aiming at the standardization of the navigation system of unmanned platforms working in different environments, a multi-sensor integrated navigation system based on Mission Oriented Operating Suite (MOOS) architecture is proposed. A modular hardware circuit and a distributed software solution are designed and implemented. On this basis, an integrated navigation algorithm based on compass, Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) and Ultra-Short Baseline (USBL) is designed. The test of underwater integrated navigation carried out by the experimental vehicle shows that the hardware and software of the integrated navigation system can operate stably, and the functions of multi-sensor integrated navigation can be realized with high positioning accuracy.

Abstract:With underground space era coming,it has become the research hotspot to seek for scientific planning,design,management methods and means of underground engineering.Based on 3D GIS,breaking through the traditional method,this study developed a set of editing,query and analysis,3D roam and display in one of digital information system about the underground engineering.In this study,3D visualization and spatial analysis are achieved in the underground space by 2D and 3D integration technology.It improved the condition that underground engineering information system less involved 3D information on the ground in the past,and completed uniform information integration above and below ground.And we also developed the underground structure calculation and analysis module,to achieve a tunnel,excavation reinforcement design,stability analysis and other functions,and can output standard design drawings.The research results can effectively assist the plan,development and utilization of underground space.The experience of systems development can also provide a reference for other similar software development.

Abstract:The autonomous positioning of tunneling equipment is the key to intellectualization and robotization of a tunneling face. In this paper, a method based on simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) to estimate the body pose of a roadheader and build a navigation map of a roadway is presented. In terms of pose estimation, an RGB-D camera is used to collect images, and a pose calculation model of a roadheader is established based on random sample consensus (RANSAC) and iterative closest point (ICP); constructing a pose graph optimization model with closed-loop constraints. An iterative equation based on Levenberg–Marquadt is derived, which can achieve the optimal estimation of the body pose. In terms of mapping, LiDAR is used to experimentally construct the grid map based on open-source algorithms, such as Gmapping, Cartographer, Karto, and Hector. A point cloud map, octree map, and compound map are experimentally constructed based on the open-source library RTAB-MAP. By setting parameters, such as the expansion radius of an obstacle and the updating frequency of the map, a cost map for the navigation of a roadheader is established. Combined with algorithms, such as Dijskra and timed-elastic-band, simulation experiments show that the combination of octree map and cost map can support global path planning and local obstacle avoidance.
