Abstract:Deep studies on C-60(n-) and C-70(n-) have been performed based on superconductivities of M-x C-60 (M = K, Cs, Rb). The development of research in the Jahn-Teller distortion and spectroscopy of fullerene ions C-60(n +/-), C-70(n +/-), C-76(n +/-), C-78(n +/-) , and C-80(n +/-), is reviewed. Relevant works of other groups worldwide about experimental determination, theoretical calculation, structural exploration and spectroscopic investigation are introduced. The regularity of Jahn-Teller distortion and electronic spectra of fullerene ions is further explored according to authors' theoretical research in this field.
Negatively Curved Octagon‐Incorporated Aza‐nanographene and its Assembly with Fullerenes

Abstract:A negatively curved aza-nanographene (NG) containing two octagons was synthesized via a regioselective and stepwise cyclodehydrogenation procedure, where a double aza[7]helicene was simultaneously formed as an intermediate. Their saddle-shaped structures with negative curvature were unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography, enabling the exploration of structure-property relationship by photophysical, electrochemical and conformational studies. Moreover, the assembly of the octagon-embedded aza-NG with fullerenes was probed by fluorescence spectral titration, offering record-high binding constants (Ka = 9.5 × 103 M–1 with C60, Ka = 3.7 × 104 M–1 with C70) among reported negatively curved polycyclic aromatic compounds. The tight association of aza-NG with C60 was further elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis of their co-crystal, showing the formation of 1:1 complex with substantial concave-convex interactions.

Abstract:Carbon exists as a variety of nanometer-sized allotropes, such as 0D fullerenes, 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and 2D graphene. So far, it is still a great challenge to construct CNTs with a fixed length and diameter-specified single-chirality.1-2 In this talk, we will discuss synthesis and properties of a series of novel large π-extended molecular carbon crowns and cylinders as a finite model of single-walled CNTs, including TCR, HCR, and their C60 complexes et al.3 The nanographene HBC unit can be facilely embedded into cycloparaphenylene rings by Pd-mediated coupling reactions and the structure can be confirmed by crystal structure.2 Their macrocyclic structures of these nanocarbons have also been characterized using various physical methods, including NMR, STM, PL, crystallographic analysis. The photophysical properties of these molecules are studied in solution and explained by theoretical calculations. In addition, the ring-shaped structure can be inserted into a poly(para-phenylene) backbone as a polymeric segment (PS1) of single-walled CNTs.4 PS1 is achieved by a rationally designed synthesis of a bifunctionalized cyclo-para-phenylene monomer, followed by inserting these ring-shaped units into the conjugated poly(para-phenylene) chain. All these π-extended nanocarbons can provide new insight for the development of bottom-up syntheses of uniform carbon nanotube segments and potential applications in electron- and hole-transport devices. Abstract:Two enantiomers with helical carbon frameworks (M-HCFa and P-HCFa) and their conformational isomers (M-HCFb and P-HCFb) have been synthesized and characterized. The single crystal analysis revealed the novel structures in which three propeller blades spiro-fused on two central benzene rings. The optical properties were further investigated, and stable bipolar electrochemiluminescence emissions were discovered for the first time existing in helical carbon frameworks, which provide new insights into the future development of high-performance molecular luminescent devices.

Abstract:AbstractCarbon nanotubes (CNTs) have unusual physical properties that are valuable for nanotechnology and electronics, but the chemical synthesis of chirality‐ and diameter‐specific CNTs and π‐conjugated CNT segments is still a great challenge. Reported here are the selective syntheses, isolations, characterizations, and photophysical properties of two novel chiral conjugated macrocycles ([4]cyclo‐2,6‐anthracene; [4]CAn2,6), as (−)/(+)‐(12,4) carbon nanotube segments. These conjugated macrocyclic molecules were obtained using a bottom‐up assembly approach and subsequent reductive elimination reaction. The hoop‐shaped molecules can be directly viewed by a STM technique. In addition, chiral enantiomers with (−)/(+) helicity of the [4]CAn2,6 were successfully isolated by HPLC. The new tubular CNT segments exhibit large absorption and photoluminescence redshifts compared to the monomer unit. The carbon enantiomers are also observed to show strong circularly polarized luminescence (glum≈0.1). The results reported here expand the scope of materials design for bottom‐up synthesis of chiral macrocycles and enrich existing knowledge of their optoelectronic properties.
Concavity Effects on the Optical Properties of Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract:We study the modifications on the ground and excited state properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), induced by the variation of concavity and $\pi$-connectivity. Inspired by experimentally feasible systems, we study three series of PAHs, from H-saturated graphene flakes to geodesic buckybowls, related to the formation of fullerene C60 and C50-carbon nanotube caps. Working within the framework of quantum chemistry semi-empirical methods AM1 and ZINDO/S, we find that the interplay between concavity and \pi-connectivity shifts the bright optical lines to higher energies, and introduces symmetry-forbidden dark excitations at low energy. A generally good agreement with the available experimental data supports our results, which can be viewed as the basis for designing optical properties of novel curved aromatic molecules.

Pinwheel-like Curved Aromatics from the Cyclotrimerization of Strained Alkyne Cycloparaphenylenes

Abstract:Curved aromatic hydrocarbons often display better solubility and more desirable electronic properties in comparison to their flat counterparts. Macrocyclic curved aromatics possess these traits as well as shape-persistent pores ideal for host-guest interactions. A quintessential macrocyclic curved aromatic molecule is the cycloparaphenylene, or [n]CPP. Our group has developed a new class of these carbon nanohoops, called [n+1]CPPs, that incorporate a strained alkyne (“+1”) into the carbon backbone. We have previously shown the [n+1]CPPs to be a promising new class of strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition click reagents. Herein, we show that the [n+1]CPPs can also be converted into pinwheel-like multi-pore large molecules via a straightforward and high yielding metal-mediated alkyne cyclotrimerization reaction. We provide insight into suitable metals for this transformation, the photophysics of these trimeric molecules, as well as their strain profiles and crystal packing.

A novel symmetry in nanocarbons: pre-constant discrete principal curvature structure

Abstract:Since the first-principles calculations in quantum chemistry precisely provide possible configurations of carbon atoms in nanocarbons, we have analyzed the geometrical structure of the possible carbon configurations and found that there exists a novel symmetry in the nanocarbons, i.e., the pre-constant discrete principal curvature (pCDPC) structure. In terms of the discrete principal curvature based on the discrete geometry for trivalent oriented graphs developed by Kotani, Naito, and Omori (Comput. Aided Geom. Design, $\bf{58}$, (2017), 24-54), we numerically investigated discrete principal curvature distribution of the nanocarbons, C$_{60}$, carbon nanotubes, C$_{120}$ (C$_{60}$ dimer), and C$_{60}$-polymers (peanut-shaped fullerene polymers). While the C$_{60}$ and nanotubes have the constant discrete principal curvature (CDPC) as we expected, it is interesting to note that the C$_{60}$-polymers and C$_{60}$ dimer also have the almost constant discrete principal curvature, i.e., pCDPC, which is surprising. A nontrivial pCDPC structure with revolutionary symmetry is available due to discreteness, though it has been overlooked in geometry. In discrete geometry, there appears a center axisoid which is the discrete analogue of the center axis in the continuum differential geometry but has three-dimensional structure rather than a one-dimensional curve due to its discrete nature. We demonstrated that such pCDPC structure exists in nature, namely in the C$_{60}$-polymers. Furthermore, since we found that there is a positive correlation between the degree of the CDPC structure and stability of the configurations for certain class of the C$_{60}$-polymers, we also revealed the origin of the pCDPC structure from an aspect of materials science.

Abstract:ConspectusDesigning and synthesizing topologically unique molecules is a long-term challenge for synthetic chemists. Classical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large group of π-conjugated planar organic compounds with rich photophysical and electronic properties, while nonplanar/curved PAHs have different molecular orbital arrangements and demonstrate unique properties. The chemistry of curved aromatic molecules has been of significant interest to explore the relationship between π conjugation and molecular geometry, which offers an attractive combination of fundamental problems, potential applications, and aesthetic appeal. Remarkable advances have been made in the last few decades during the discovery of novel curved aromatic molecules, including corannulenes, fullerenes, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Especially, there has been increasing interest in making single-chirality CNTs and their curved molecular components (known as finite segments of CNTs) with a fixed geometry. The most representative examples of such organic molecules are cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) and related carbon nanorings, which possess cylindrical topologies and nanoscale conjugated segments similar to CNTs. CPPs, as the shortest cross-section and the simplest structure of armchair CNTs, have been synthetically accessible since 2008. Recent years have witnessed breakthroughs and rapid development in the synthesis of CPP-based nanorings as well as their derived molecules. In these molecules, the distortion from aromatic planarity can induce radially oriented π systems and further affect their electronic, optical, self-assembly, and charge-transport characteristics. These unique and interesting carbon nanorings are potentially useful in a variety of optoelectronic and biomedical materials. It is well-known that extension of the π-conjugated system facilitates the delocalization of π electrons and the redistribution of electronic clouds, leading to rich diversification of physical properties in the fields of electronics, optics, and supramolecular chemistry. Therefore, the precise design and controllable synthesis of carbon nanorings with large π conjugation will promote important advances in synthetic chemistry. To date, a number of π-extended carbon nanorings have been reported, and they exhibit novel physicochemical properties resulting from their fascinating topologies and structures. However, challenges still remain in the synthesis of π-extended carbon nanorings and their structural analogues and exploration of their unique properties.In this Account, we give a brief overview of our efforts to synthesize large π-extended carbon nanorings using different strategies and explore their novel applications. In 2013 we started our research on the synthesis of carbon nanorings with large π-conjugated structures. This research project has led to (i) the successful preparation of a series of carbon nanorings with inserted PAHs, especially with various nanographenes inserted, such as hexa-<i>peri</i>-hexabenzocoronene; (ii) the design and synthesis of a series of carbon nanorings consisting solely of PAHs; and (iii) the initial synthesis of π-extended carbon-nanoring-based polymers as the long polymeric segments of CNTs, in which macrocyclic CPPs as the basic repeating blocks were covalently coupled together. Herein we describe in detail how these challenging π-extended carbon nanorings were synthesized, and their interesting physical properties are discussed.

π-extended pyrenes: from an antiaromatic buckybowl to doubly curved nanocarbons with gulf architectures

Abstract:The synthesis of π-extended pyrenes keeps attracting considerable attention. In particular, frameworks containing nonbenzenoid rings might display intriguing properties. Here, we report a practical synthetic pathway to access a new buckybowl (1), which is composed of four five-membered rings externally fused to a pyrene core. The buckybowl 1 exhibits antiaromaticity involving 22 π-electrons, a rapid bowl-to-bowl interconversion, and a small band gap. Furthermore, this buckybowl could be subjected to Scholl cyclodehydrogenation to prepare the doubly curved nanocarbons (2rac and 2meso), which exist as two diastereomers, as demonstrated by X-ray crystal structure determination. Variable temperature 1H NMR measurements reveal that 2meso can isomerize into 2rac under thermal conditions, with an activation free energy of 27.1 kcal mol-1. Both the enantiomers of 2rac can be separated by chiral HPLC and their chiroptical properties are thoroughly examined. In addition, the nanocarbon 2meso with two gulf architectures facilitates host-guest chemistry with a variety of guests, including PDI, TDI, C60 and C70.
Synthesis, Photophysical and Supramolecular Properties of a Π-Conjugated Molecular Crown Containing a Pentagonal Unit: A Model Compound for Fullerene C240

Abstract:The total synthesis of carbon onions is a significant challenge in the fields of materials science and organic chemistry. To date, the synthesis of even a fragment of fullerene C240 and its smallest carbon onion C60@C240 remains poorly explored. Herein, we demonstrate a bottom-up strategy to produce a novel π-extended molecular crown-shaped molecule (MC3) containing curved pentagonal and hexagonal units. This molecular crown represents a curved model compound for fullerene C240 and is fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry, UV-vis absorption, and from its emission spectra. Its supramolecular host–guest interaction with fullerene C60 is also investigated. MC3 and C60@MC3 can potentially be employed as seeds or templates for the bottom-up synthesis of fullerene C240 and the carbon onion C60@C240, respectively.

Abstract:A curved nanographene, conceptually by insertion of nitrogen into a trapezoidal planar nanographene at the edge was synthesized by π-extension of the nitrogen-doped hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene. This N-doped nanographene exhibited a π-electronic concave face containing a nonaromatic azepine ring in the middle with a size of 14.0 Å length and 4.0 Å depth, which represents an unprecedented half-side concave geometry of curved nanographene. The bent π-extension exhibited a low degree of conjugation suggested by calculation results. Due to the unique 3D structure and electron-rich property, this nanographene showed pronounced intermolecular charge transfer with C60.

Abstract:Bottom-up synthesis of pi-extended macrocyclic carbon rings is promising for constructing length- and diameter-specific carbon nanotubes (CNTs). However, it is still a great challenge to realize size-controllable giant carbon macrocycles. Herein, a tunable synthesis of curved nanographene-based giant pi-extended macrocyclic rings (CHBC[n]s; n=8, 6, 4), as finite models of armchair CNTs, is reported. Among them, CHBC[8] contains 336 all-carbon atoms and is the largest cyclic conjugated molecular CNT segment ever reported. CHBC[n]s were systematically characterized by various spectroscopic methods and applied in photoelectrochemical cells for the first time. This revealed that the proton chemical shifts, fluorescence, and electronic and photoelectrical properties of CHBC[n]s are highly dependent on the macrocycle diameter. The tunable bottom-up synthesis of giant macrocyclic rings could pave the way towards large pi-extended diameter- and chirality-specific CNT segments.

Abstract:The general structural characters of carbon bucky-cages are studied in this paper using the principle of structural chemistry and geometry. It is shown that the carbon bucky-cages are made of 12 pentagon and some hexagon carbon-networks, and that the number of heptagon carbon-networks must be zero. The diameter, length and carbon atom numbers of single wall nanotubes (SWNTs) are dealt with in this paper. We propose that the less the curvature of the carbon-cage and the more symmetric the structure, the more stable and greater the yield rate of the carbon bucky-cages. The pentagon network on the edge of NTs must be annealed out to the hexagon networks to maintain the open edge growth of SWNTs. In addition, we study the MS substructures of C60 and C70 due to 13C using the probable theory; the theoretical result is consistent with the experimental MS.

Abstract:The stable configurations of small fullerenes (C-20 and C-28) encapsulated inside single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) of different diameters were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The interactions between carbon atoms were described by a combination of the many-body Brenner potential with the Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential. We observed that the filling of small fullerenes into nanotubes with diameters larger than 10.85 angstrom (( 8, 8) SWNT) is an exothermic process. During the annealing process the fullerenes arrange themselves into complex phases, which may be one-( chain), two-(zigzag) or three-dimensional, depending on the tube diameter. This tube size dependence is very similar to that of C-60, which has been experimentally observed. A comparison with the prediction of the hard-sphere model also finds a satisfactory level of consistency, indicating the dense packing nature of fullerene configurations in SWNTs.
Unraveling the flexible aromaticity of C13H9+/0/-: a 2D superatomic-molecule theory

Abstract:Phenalenyl (C13H9) is the smallest triangular unit of a graphene nanosheet, which is experimentally verified to be stable in radical (C13H9), cationic (C13H9+), and anionic (C13H9-) states. All these three species feature high symmetry and stability as well as delocalized π electrons, a visible sign of aromaticity, but their aromatic origin remains a challenge. This work reports new chemical insights into the π electrons of C13H9+/0/- and deciphers their aromaticity using a recently emerged two-dimensional (2D) superatomic-molecule theory. 12π-C13H9+, 13π-C13H9, and 14π-C13H9- are seen as triangular 2D superatomic molecules ◊O3, ◊O3-, and ◊O32-, respectively, where ◊O denotes a 2D benzenoid superatom bearing 4 π electrons. Visualized superatomic Lewis structures show that each ◊O can dynamically adjust its π electrons to satisfy the superatomic sextet rule of benzene via superatomic lone pairs and covalent bonds. C13H9+/0/- are representatives of adaptive aromaticity in 2D superatomic-molecule system, exhibiting flexible π electronic structures to achieve shell-closure. Moreover, we specially adopt a progressive methodology to study the evolution of 2D periodic materials, by applying this theory to the similar family of C6H3N7, C18H6N22 and graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4) crystal, meanwhile accounting for the special stability of g-C3N4. This work enriches 2D superatomic bonding chemistry and provides a useful strategy to design new 2D functional nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Large scientific community has been passionate in understanding different carbon nanostructures for last two decades. In this review, we present the general description of low-dimensional carbon allotropes such as fullerenes (0D), carbon nanotubes (1D), and graphene (2D). These structures have unique diversity of carbon–carbon bonds. Structures and electronic properties of fullerenes, small closed carbon cages, and giant fullerenes are illustrated. We point out the complexity in the area of fullerene research because of a wide range of structures and number of possible isomers of fullerenes. The concept of isolated pentagon rule in fullerenes is highlighted. We delineate the usefulness of pyramidalization angle in evaluating the curvature of fullerenes. The role of computational chemistry in identifying different isomers of fullerenes and validating the experimental results in ambiguous situations is also briefly mentioned. Properties of different types of carbon nanotubes, particularly single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and their structural features are summarized. The use of pyramidalization angle (θP) and π-orbital misalignment angles in predicting the reactivity of different carbon atom sites of SWCNTs is discussed. Finally, we outline the structures and electronic properties of graphene, and discuss the status of experimental investigations of this species.
