Abstract:A mixed-model assembly U-line is a flexible production system capable of manufacturing a variety of similar models, and it has become popular as an important component of the just-in-time production system. However, it poses new challenges for the optimal design of assembly lines because both the task assignment and the production sequence affect the workload variance among workstations. As a consequence, this paper addresses the line balancing problem and the model sequencing problem jointly and proposes a 0–1 stochastic programming model. In this model, task times are assumed to be stochastic variables independently distributed with normal distributions and the objective is to minimise the expectation of work overload time for a given combination of cycle time and number of workstations. To solve the problem, a simulated annealing-based algorithm is developed, which can also be used to minimise the absolute deviation of workloads in a deterministic environment. The experimental results for a set of benchmark problems show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of solution quality and running time.

Abstract:We state a balancing problem for mixed model assembly lines with a paced moving conveyor as: Given the daily assembling sequence of the models, the tasks of each model, the precedence relations among the tasks, and the operations parameters of the assembly line, assign the tasks of the models to the workstations so as to minimize the total overload time. Several characteristics of the problem are investigated. A line‐balancing heuristic is proposed based on a lower bound of the total overload time. A practical procedure is provided for estimating the deviation of any given line‐balance solution from the theoretical optimum. Abstract:We address a two-sided assembly line balancing problem with the consideration of stochastic task time and multi-product production mode. The objective is to minimize the expected cycle time. In view of the difficulty in evaluating the objective in a stochastic environment, we model the target problem as a simulation optimization problem. A Harmony Search (HS) based algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Besides, an Optimal Computing Budget Allocation (OCBA) method is adopted to enhance the simulation efficiency. Numerical experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed HS-based algorithm against other well-known algorithms in the literature. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the benchmark algorithms both in quality and computing efficiency.

Abstract:In order to rationally design mixed-model assembly lines and effectively solve the assembly line balancing problem,analyses the characteristics of mixed-model assembly lines and designs a new algorithm based on the process exchange.This algorithm could combine with research achievements of mixed-model sequencing problems to make the assembly line more balanced owing to its high compatibility.Describes the principle and the executing process of this new algorithm in details.The new algorithm was applied in an automobile harness of lamp assembly line,the results of which proved the validity and feasibility of the algorithm this proposed.

Abstract:The present article focuses on the application of a procedure based on ant colonies to solve disassembly line balancing problem. Firstly, the problem under study is proposed with the objective functions of line idle rate, workload smoothness and disassembly cost. Subsequently, the multi-objective optimization mathematical model of disassembly line balancing is formulated based on the proposed functions of the three objectives. Then, combining characteristics of disassembly line balancing problem, an improved multi-objective ant colony algorithm based on Pareto set is developed to optimize the optimization model. Finally, a practical case is provided to illustrate the proposed model and algorithm.

Abstract:Assembly line balancing problem (ALBP) means assigning a series of task elements to uniform sequential stations under certain restrictions. This paper considers a special type of assembly line balancing problem with mixed models, fuzzy operation times and drifting operations, which has the objective of minimizing the total work overload time. According to chance constrained programming, a fuzzy α total work overload time minimization model is built. Moreover, fuzzy simulation and genetic algorithm are integrated to design a hybrid intelligent algorithm to solve the above model. Finally, Extensive computational results are reported to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:<p>Assembly lines play a crucial role in determining the profitability of a company. Market conditions have increased the importance of mixed-model assembly lines. Variations in the demand are frequent in real industrial environments and often leads to failure of the mixed-model assembly line balancing scheme. Decision makers have to take into account this uncertainty. In an assembly line balancing problem, there is a massive amount of research in the literature assuming deterministic environment, and many other works consider uncertain task times. This research utilises the uncertainty theory to model uncertain demand and introduces complexity theory to measure the uncertainty of assembly lines. Scenario probability and triangular fuzzy number are used to describe the uncertain demand. The station complexity was measured based on information entropy and fuzzy entropy to assist in balancing systems with robust performances, considering the influence of multi-model products in the station on the assembly line. Taking minimum station complexity, minimum workload difference within station, maximum productivity as objective functions, a new optimization model for mixed-model assembly line balancing under uncertain demand was established. Then an improved genetic algorithm was applied to solve the model. Finally, the effectiveness of the model was verified by several instances of mixed-model assembly line for automobile engine.</p>

Abstract:U-shaped assembly line which has a better balance and a more compact space compared with traditional linear line derived from lean production. Aiming at balancing type-2 and -3 problem, learning effect and various constraints which cannot be ignored being added, an idea of combining learning effect with multiple constraints in actual production is put forward in this paper. Besides, the mixed nonlinear integer programming model is established for u-shaped assembly line to conduct a synthesis optimization for multiple optimized objects, and the improved genetic algorithm is being used for optimized solution. Finally, this model is applied to X company, and the weighted average load balance of each station and the assembly line rhythm as well as time fluctuation of the workstation are improved which verify the optimization of this model and the fitness of the improved genetic algorithm.

Abstract:This paper addresses a stochastic assembly line balancing problem with flexible task times and zoning constraints. In this problem, task times are regarded as interval variables with given lower and upper bounds. Machines can compress processing times of tasks to improve the line efficiency, but it may increase the equipment cost, which is defined via a negative linear function of task times. Thus, it is necessary to make a compromise between the line efficiency and the equipment cost. To solve this problem, a bi-objective chance-constrained mixed 0–1 programming model is developed to simultaneously minimize the cycle time and the equipment cost. Then, a hybrid Particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to search a set of Pareto-optimal solutions, which employs the simulated annealing as a local search strategy. The Taguchi method is used to investigate the influence of parameters, and accordingly a suitable parameter setting is suggested. Finally, the comparative results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms by obtaining better solutions within the same running time.

Abstract:Assembly line balancing involves assigning a series of task elements to uniform sequential stations with certain restrictions. Decision makers often discover that a task assignment which is optimal with respect to a deterministic or stochastic/fuzzy model yields quite poor performance in reality. In real environments, assembly line balancing robustness is a more appropriate decision selection guide. A robust model based on the α worst case scenario is developed to compensate for the drawbacks of traditional robust criteria. A robust genetic algorithm is used to solve the problem. Comprehensive computational experiments to study the effect of the solution procedure show that the model generates more flexible robust solutions. Careful tuning the value of α allows the decision maker to balance robustness and conservativeness of assembly line task element assignments.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to introduce robust optimization approaches to balance mixed model assembly lines with uncertain task times and daily model mix changes. Design/methodology/approach - Scenario planning approach is used to represent the input data uncertainty in the decision model. Two kinds of robust criteria are provided: one is min-max related; and the other is a-worst scenario based. Corresponding optimization models are formulated, respectively. A genetic algorithm-based robust optimization framework is designed. Comprehensive computational experiments are done to study the effect of these robust approaches. Findings - With min-max related robust criteria, the solutions can provide an optimal worst-case hedge against uncertainties without a significant sacrifice in the long-run performance; a-worst scenario-based criteria can generate flexible robust solutions: through rationally tuning the value of a, the decision maker can obtain a balance between robustness and conservatism of an assembly line task elements assignment. Research limitations/implications - This paper is an attempt to robust mixed model assembly line balancing. Some more efficient and effective robust approaches - including robust criteria and optimization algorithms - may be designed in the future. Practical implications - In an assembly line with significant uncertainty, the robust approaches proposed in this paper can hedge against the risk of poor system performance in bad scenarios. Originality/value - Using robust optimization approaches to balance mixed model assembly line.

Abstract:With the capacity limitation of the assembly line buffer area, a method for solving the mixed flow assembly line balancing problem considering material supply strategy is proposed. This paper analyzes the changes in material transportation time and assembly time due to different supply strategies, and proposes a method for jointly modeling the assembly line balancing and material supply problem. In the case of meeting the production cycle, with the buffer area capacity as the limit and the shortest production operation time as the goal, a joint optimization model including material handling time, material transportation time and assembly line working time is established, and the model is designed for the established model Genetic algorithm with piecewise coding. Finally, the proposed algorithm was evaluated using a workshop raw date, the simulation results show that although the indirect supply cost is relatively more than the direct supply, it can effectively alleviate the problem of the capacity limitation of the buffer area.

Abstract:Abstract Given the characteristics of decommissioning product diversity, wear difference, and structural complexity, we analyzed the disassembly line balance problems of minimum disassembly workstation, station load balancing, priority disassembly of high-demand parts and the lowest cost of invalid operations, and further considered the influence of random factors on actual disassembly operations. The purpose of this paper is to establish a model of sequence-dependent stochastic mixed-flowed partial disassembly line balancing problem and propose an adaptive hybrid particle swarm genetic algorithm to solve the model. The algorithm replaces the fixed value genetic operator with an adaptive crossover and mutation operator to improve the global optimization ability. The introduction of adaptive weighted particles leads to improved local optimization ability of the algorithm so that the algorithm has strong global and regional optimization ability to improve algorithm accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by solving the classic disassembly line balancing problem with different scales and comparing it with the solution results of underlying genetic and particle swarm optimization algorithm. Meanwhile, the proposed model and algorithm are applied to the mixed-flow disassembly engineering project of a 25-task reducer. The results indicate that the proposed model is superior to the control group in terms of minimal disassembly workstation, station load balancing, invalid operation cost, and overall performance of the disassembly line, which verifies the validity of the model.

Abstract:Assembly line is widely used in manufacturing system. Assembly line balancing problem is a crucial question during design and management of assembly lines since it directly affects the productivity of the whole manufacturing system. The model of assembly line balancing problem is put forward and a general optimization method is proposed. The key data on assembly line balancing problem is confirmed, and the precedence relations diagram is described. A double objective optimization model based on takt time and smoothness index is built, and balance optimization scheme based on PSO algorithm is proposed. Through the simulation experiments of examples, the feasibility and validity of the assembly line balancing method based on PSO algorithm is proved.

Abstract:With the development of society and technology, the modern manufacturing system is required to handle unpredictable and rapidly changing market demands during various demand periods. This is a new challenge to the production scheduling of the production line, which requires a faster and smarter response to changes in production demand. To meet the challenge, the reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) has emerged as a competitive and promising manufacturing model. The reconfigurable assembly system (RAS), a critical feature of RMS, can be seamlessly incorporated into multi-variety, variable-batch, multi-functional, and fast-delivery manufacturing modes, opening up the possibility of rapid changes for production scheduling. In this paper, we first build a RAS model that can more accurately represent scheduling problems that may occur in real-world industrial operations. More specifically, we consider the assembly process of products could be divided into a number of major steps which are performed in different stations and optimize the assembly sequence of products and the equipment selection within individual assembly stations. After that, three objective functions corresponding to the workload balance, reconfiguration/assembly cost, and lead time are proposed to jointly optimize the assembly sequence and the equipment selection in individual assembly stations. Finally, a hybrid particle swarm optimization (MOHPSO) method is utilized to solve the multiple-objective optimization problem, which combines the advantages of particle swarm optimization and the hybrid method. Experimental results show the superiority of the proposed MOHPSO method over other alternatives including MOPSO and NSGA-II, achieving lower Spacing Metric (SM) and Mean Ideal Distance (MID) indexes and is suitable for solving production scheduling problems.

Abstract:In the evolving landscape of manufacturing and remanufacturing, assembly lines play a crucial role. Within the context of Industry 5.0, human workers are seen as a valuable and irreplaceable resource. Human-robot collaboration is a promising production model that combines the strengths of human workers and robots, thereby enhancing production efficiency while reducing occupational risks related to ergonomics. Despite these advancements, inherent uncertainties within assembly processes, the integration of human-robot partnerships, and the dynamic nature of market demands pose significant challenges to traditional assembly methods. To address these challenges, this research introduces a novel modelling approach through a mixed-flow assembly line balancing problem designed for uncertain environments, fostering collaboration between humans and robots. The primary goal is to facilitate efficient collaboration within a type-I assembly line balancing problem framework, where predefined assembly beats guide the workflow. In this research, the use of interval type-2 fuzzy sets capabilities was investigated to address uncertainties in the assembly process. Furthermore, the potential of pairing human operators of different abilities with robots of different models for collaborative tasks at workstations was explored, enhancing flexibility and adaptability in the assembly line. In response to the complexity of the problem, this research proposes an efficient multiobjective discrete bees algorithm that incorporates innovative operators and search strategies. Rigorously tested across diverse case studies, this algorithm consistently outperforms other comparator algorithms. This research not only offers novel perspectives on addressing assembly line balancing challenges but also provides valuable insights for the effective implementation of human-robot collaborative assembly in uncertain environments.

Abstract:In this study, we present two new mathematical models for mixed-model assembly line balancing. The line is semi-automated and characterized by various alternative formats for the operations performed, which range from human operators and assisting robots to robotics solutions, where the operators may have different skill levels and operators on adjacent stations may cooperate. Given the cycle time, the first model minimizes the fixed and variable costs associated with setting up the assembly line. However, the second mathematical model involves a cycle time, which is variable and it changes between a lower bound and an upper bound. These bounds reflect the expected future changes in demand. The objective is to minimize both the costs and the cycle time. To obtain more accurate and reliable results, we present a robust solution for the different confidence levels (α) determined by managers. To verify the mathematical models, we considered different test problems and compared the robust solutions under three different conditions. The results showed that the robust modeling approach obtains a more reliable design than the traditional cost trade-off alone. The model allows decision makers to select assembly operations based on a better understanding of their decision impacts in both the short term and long term under conditions of demand uncertainty.
