This article also introduced the development of new automotive plastics recycling in China. Abstract:While the concept of remanufacturing is gaining popularity in practice, its effect on environmental protection and energy saving is significant, which has attracted widespread concerns, especially in the automotive components field. Automotive components remanufacturing (ACR), as a prominent part in automotive life-cycle development, can dramatically reduce resources-waste and mitigate energy-crisis, which has become a prominent direction to promote sustainable development of Chinese economy. Thus, influence factors analysis and enterprise operation patterns assessment which primarily contribute to ACR industry development are of paramount importance. This paper elaborates the criteria influencing the ACR industry operation and analyzes the main operation patterns for ACR in China. To overcome the uncertainty of the evaluation process, a new hybrid multi-criterion decision-making (MCDM) model that combines fuzzy AHP (analytical hierarchy process) and fuzzy G-TOPSIS (combining gray relation analysis and technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution) is proposed to determine weights of influence criteria and evaluate ACR production operation patterns. In addition, sensitivity analysis is applied to monitor the robustness of the method. The study refers to the experience of Chinese end-of life vehicle (ELV) laws and implementation requirements of extended producer responsibility (EPR). The obtained results provide the new guideline to revise the regulations of Chinese ACR industry. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Compared with the recycling of scrapped automobile materials, the remanufacturing is a circular economy model with higher comprehensive benefits. However, the current development of China's scrapped automobiles remanufacturing industry is facing the bottleneck challenge of relatively low recycling rate of scrapped automobiles. By reviewing more than one-hundred peer-reviewed related papers, we identify the current challenges faced by China's scrapped automobiles recycling for remanufacturing and contribute to three aspects. First, through comparative research, we found that China's legislation on scrapped automobiles recycling can be divided into three categories, but the system is unclear. Second, the dynamic evolutionary perspective reveals that the research on the recycling model of scrapped automobiles present characteristics of integration, and these models can be classified into two categories and seven types. Third, we propose a method system to promote the recycling of scraped automobiles according to the evolution of value and the change of core driving force, and summarizes six key recycling methods, but the implementation of some methods faces challenges such as information barriers. This work reveals the factors at both the micro and macro level of automobile recycling for remanufacturing, which can help researchers to create a framework for empirical studies.

Abstract:With booming of the automobile industry, China has become the country with increasing car ownership all over the world. However, the end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling industry is at infancy, and there is little systematic review on ELV recycling management, as well as low adoption amongst domestic automobile industry. This study presents a literature review and an interpretive structural modelling (ISM) approach is employed to identify the drivers towards Chinese ELV recycling business from government, recycling organizations and consumer's perspectives, so as to improve the sustainability of automobile supply chain by providing some strategic insights. The results derived from the ISM analysis manifest that regulations on auto-factory, disassembly technique, and value mining of recycling business are the essential ingredients. It is most effective and efficient to promote ELV recycling business by improving these attributes, also the driving and dependence power analysis are deemed to provide guidance on performance improvement of ELV recycling in the Chinese market.

Abstract:A conventional vehicle requires more than 50 different metals in its manufacturing, most of which are critical. Given this circumstance, enhancing sustainability from a raw materials perspective requires improvements in the disassemblability of car parts. This enhancement aims to yield metal-rich fractions, enabling the application of effective recycling processes for the recovery of critical metals. This helps avoid the downcycling that occurs in conventional shredding processes. The present study was undertaken to analyze the challenges associated with disassembling components of significant value due to their metal content. The methodology comprises two distinct main stages: an identification of critical car parts and an assessment of disassemblability. The selection of car parts was determined by the criticality of each one through the thermodynamic rarity indicator. Disassemblability was studied experimentally, encompassing three different levels. This classification defines the stages from extracting parts from the vehicle and obtaining recycling fractions in their purest form: ferrous metals, aluminum, non-ferrous metals excluding aluminum, and plastics. This methodology was implemented on two vehicles manufactured by SEAT: SEAT Leon models II and III. As a result, not only was disassemblability information about these car parts collected, but several ecodesign recommendations were also identified as valuable guidance for future designs, specifically aimed at enhancing metals' recyclability. In conclusion, it must be acknowledged that contemporary vehicle design often prioritizes cost-effective manufacturing processes. However, this approach may compromise the disassemblability and recyclability of the product. The ongoing transition to electric vehicles necessitates a re-evaluation of design principles, particularly from the perspective of the circular economy.

Abstract:In-depth studies on the recycling of typical automotive exterior plastic parts are significant and beneficial for environmental protection, energy conservation, and sustainable development of China. In the current study, several methods were used to analyze the recycling industry model for typical exterior parts of passenger vehicles in China. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of the current recycling industry for typical exterior parts of passenger vehicles were analyzed comprehensively based on the SWOT method. The internal factor evaluation matrix and external factor evaluation matrix were used to evaluate the internal and external factors of the recycling industry. The recycling industry was found to respond well to all the factors and it was found to face good developing opportunities. Then, the cross-link strategies analysis for the typical exterior parts of the passenger car industry of China was conducted based on the SWOT analysis strategies and established SWOT matrix. Finally, based on the aforementioned research, the recycling industry model led by automobile manufacturers was promoted.

Abstract:Recently the environmental regulations require automobile makers not only to set up the open loop resource recycling system by promoting the material recycling and remanufacturing in disposal phase, but also to apply Eco-design to their products in design phase. Hyundai Motor Group applies DfD(Design for Disassembly) and DfR(Design for Recycling) from conceptual design stage to production stage with the aspect of concurrent engineering. Eco-design guideline helps engineering designers to understand the necessity of Eco-design. The recyclability check sheets that include detailed design ideas classified by the polymer parts enable each designer to verify the product design by oneself. Furthermore, virtual recyclability inspection is performed in the digital product inspection stage which handles the virtual 3D modeling of products. All these activities became the official procedure in product development process. The DOROSY(Design for Recycling Optimizing SYstem) which is developed to help designers evaluate and modify their 3D design to generate the redesign alternatives and finally analyze the effect of environmental design change within a short time. Because DOROSY is based in CATIA which is familiar to engineering designers using the parametric designed template, engineering designer can apply the Eco-friendly idea to product design efficiently.
A Study on the Optimization of Reverse Logistics Network in China's Automotive Industry: Focusing on Abandoned Cars in China

Abstract:Reverse logistics network design is a strategic level of decision-making, and the recovery process of abandoned vehicles is inseparable from the support of a complete reverse logistics network. Against the backdrop of the green economy and the circular economy, this study designed a waste vehicle reverse logistics network under two constraints: carbon tax policy and carbon transaction market policy, respectively, and established a multi-purpose mixed integer linear plan model to minimize carbon emissions and costs. In addition, using a Chinese automobile manufacturer as an example, the results of the model of maximizing economic effects (i.e., minimizing costs) and maximizing environmental effects by conducting case verification and using lingo 11.0 are as follows. First, the cost of transportation using pure electric vehicles under the same carbon emission policy is lower than using fuel cars. Second, under the two carbon policies, carbon trading policies have a better emission reduction effect and lower network operating costs. Third, we found that transactional carbon constraints help companies reduce costs and reduce carbon emissions, and help shape long-term, even image-oriented, corporate behavior. By analyzing the optimization of China's waste vehicle reverse logistics network, this study promotes the sustainable and sound development of Chinese waste vehicle recovery companies and realizes the double benefits of the economic environment. Abstract:Environmental pollution from critical materials loss from spent automotive lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is a major global concern. Practical LIBs recycling obviates pollution, saves resources and boosts sustainability. However, despite increasing research interest, there is no agreed economic or sustainable automotive battery recycling. In this review, we critically assess advances in automotive LIBs recycling with emphasis on practical advantages and design. We rank and compare a range of recycling methods, including present status and how these can be made practically sustainable. We examine closed-loop design of new batteries to boost recycling performance and critically assess possible recycling-oriented design of cell configuration, electrode and materials for recycling. We conclude with an appraisal of further research directions including, pre-treatments for recycling, advanced recycling technologies and new cycling-oriented designs. Findings will be of immediate benefit to researchers, manufacturers and government agencies in practical design for sustainable recycling of automotive batteries.

Abstract:Design for manufacturing, assembly, and disassembly is critical in manufacturing. Failing to consider this aspect can lead to inefficient performance and material overuse, which significantly impact cost and construction time. Production with a high capability for recycling is a method to help conserve natural resources. This article is compiled with a review method and has evaluated the recent and related articles that consider design for production, design for assembly and disassembly, design for recycling and reuse, and sustainable design. This review, moreover, aims to focus more on the relationship between using a design approach for production and assembly in the ease of recycling and preservation of raw materials and reuse of materials. The survey for the design methods conducive to achieving ease of recycling is one of the crucial issues that fill the gap in the literature in this respect. Google Scholar was selected as a database, and the keywords “DFMA”, “design”, “facility of recycling”, “recycling”, “EoL”, and “product design” were considered to collect related articles. At first, 115 articles were identified, and 26 articles with a high focus on the subject were selected. Finally, nine articles were considered for final evaluation, 33% of which focused on the design approach for assembly. Many of the issues evaluated are about reducing the number of components and reducing complexity in design, materials, environmental impact, manufacturing cost and time, repair, reuse, end-of-life, remanufacturing, recycling, and non-recyclable waste. According to the mentioned materials, compiling a category of crucial information along with sustainable design indicators and approaches, as well as identifying and explaining the strategic actions of the researchers in this field, will benefit the experts and help them to obtain better insight into environmentally friendly production. This, moreover, helps to substantiate a circular economy by increasing the percentage of recycling materials and parts with various methods and reducing costs and the use of raw materials.
Policies on End-Of-Life Passenger Cars in China: Dynamic Modeling and Cost-Benefit Analysis

Abstract:The expansion of motor vehicle fleet in China during the past decade has produced a cascade of challenges, including dealing with end-of-life passenger cars. To date, these cars have not been effectively collected or recycled. Policies must be deliberately devised and reformed to facilitate state-of-the-art vehicle recycling and minimize waste arising from end-of-life cars. In this study, dynamic modeling and cost-benefit analysis have been employed to investigate how polices, including government subsidies, a value added tax and a deposit-refund system, may affect recycling of end-of-life passenger cars. The results indicate that a combination of deposits and subsidies will surpass all of the other independent policies in terms of the recycling rate. This combination is expected to lead to a recycling rate of 80% of end-of-life passenger cars by 2050. However, the government will have to pay an annual 62 billion Chinese Yuan in the middle of the century for old-for-new replacement subsidies, posing a heavy burden on public finance. Comparatively, the deposit-only scenario will cost the government 4.7 billion Chinese Yuan and elevate the recycling rate to 46% in 2050. These policies may help curb the black market and promote the legitimate business of dismantling and recycling in the long run. Moreover, the prospect of vehicle remanufacturing will play another key role in diminishing the black market. The results in China are compared with policies and practices in Europe, Japan and South Korea to help decision-makers develop the most appropriate strategies for end-of-life vehicle management.

Abstract:The car manufacturers can achieve scale merit only by large-scale production to reduce the cost as much as possible. However, a large-scale production usually generates similar design, same manufacture and similar products. Moreover, the customers have increasing individuation demands since both the rich customers and ordinary customers desire to gain individuation products. The modularization can eliminate the conflict between customers and car manufacturers, thus satisfying not only large-scale production but also individuation customization. The automotive modularization design must follow the design principle. The division of sub-module and deepening of modular levels have significant impact on automotive modularization adaptability. To adopt the modularization method for automotive design, the OEMs needn’t know design methods of all components except that they have to follow modularization design principle.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the economy and the change in people's aesthetic concepts, the renewal of furniture has become more and more frequent. Among the huge amount of used furniture, solid wood and wood-based panel furniture account for the vast majority, but the imperfective recycling system and insufficient recycling efforts result in serious waste, which is contrary to the low-carbon transition and sustainable development means. Based on the whole life-cycle theory of products, the recyclable designability of wooden furniture at all stages of design, manufacturing, sales, use, and recycling was researched and analyzed, and feasible suggestions to the government, enterprises, and consumers were proposed respectively. In particular, an evaluation index system and evaluation model for the recyclability of wooden furniture were established with an aim of quantitatively analyzing the recycling of wooden furniture, which will provide certain references not only to achieve reasonable recycling and disposal of used furniture but also to solve the furniture recycling issues from various levels.

Abstract:With economic development and accelerated industrialization, resource consumption has seen rapid increase. Against such a consumer boom, vehicle ownership has rocketed up, which also brings surging numbers of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs). Thus, recycling and disposing those ELVs turn out to be a head-scratching issue. As a result, how to effectively collect, dismantle, and recycling ELVs grows into a global topic. In China, over the past two decades, the Chinese vehicle ownership had grown rapidly to 261.5 million in 2019. Likewise, the ELV recycling industry in China also faces mounting challenges, especially in policy-making, recycling system, and the remanufacturing industry. The key challenges in the sector are the loss of ELVs and illegal dismantling. In recent years, despite the emergency of a group of large-scale quality dismantling enterprises, the overall technological level in the industry and the recycling rate require further advancement. In contrast, countries with highly mature automobile industry have seen a different image. Japan, for instance, has been the pioneer in the field of ELV recycling, created well-rounded laws and regulations on the industry, and developed advanced know-hows to cope with technical challenges. Therefore, this study, firstly, tries to summarize the laws and regulations and the latest industrial status of ELVs recycling in China and Japan. The deviation, if any, shall be analyzed between Japan‘s existing system and policy design, and the possible causes. Secondly, the Material Flow Analysis (MFA) method is adopted to analyse the changes of Resource Input Intensity (RII) of steel and oil for vehicles over the past 10 years, which shall provide the basis for future research on material recycling and waste treatment. Thirdly, the overall recycling rate of China's automobile products is analyzed, with the prediction that as technologies advance and related policies evolve, the recycling rate shall increase from 90 to 98% within 5 years. Fourthly, against the backdrop of circular economy development, this paper tries to provide an enlightenment to ELVs recycling management in China and Asian countries, with the stage of social development, policy system, social awareness of resource recycling, market guidance and other factors combined in the research. As a whole, this study tries to facilitate the sustainable development of the ELV recycling industry, provides support for the policy-making, and contributes to the building of a resource-saving and recycling-oriented society.
Assessing the economics of processing end-of-life vehicles through manual dismantling

Abstract:Most dismantling enterprises in a number of developing countries, such as China, usually adopt the "manual+mechanical" dismantling approach to process end-of-life vehicles. However, the automobile industry does not have a clear indicator to reasonably and effectively determine the manual dismantling degree for end-of-life vehicles. In this study, five different dismantling scenarios and an economic system for end-of-life vehicles were developed based on the actual situation of end-of-life vehicles. The fuzzy analytic hierarchy process was applied to set the weights of direct costs, indirect costs, and sales and to obtain an optimal manual dismantling scenario. Results showed that although the traditional method of "dismantling to the end" can guarantee the highest recycling rate, this method is not the best among all the scenarios. The profit gained in the optimal scenario is 100.6% higher than that in the traditional scenario. The optimal manual dismantling scenario showed that enterprises are required to select suitable parts to process through manual dismantling. Selecting suitable parts maximizes economic profit and improves dismantling speed.

Abstract:The automobile industry is an important pillar of the national economy. In response to the increasingly serious problems of energy depletion and environmental pollution, saving energy consumption and reducing pollutant emissions have become urgent requirements for the automotive industry. The most important solution at present is to reduce the weight of the car body through the application of new and multiple materials. As far as the structural materials of automobiles are concerned, they have been developed from traditional steel and aluminum to high-strength steel, high-strength aluminum alloy, fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composite (PMC), ceramic matrix composite (CMC), and other new materials. The advancement of materials and processing methods has greatly contributed to the overall safety and performance improvement of vehicles. However, the main challenges faced by the automobile industry during this transition include higher manufacturing costs for new materials, lower production efficiency, and greater difficulty in material recycling. Correspondingly, in this review, we try to explore the processing methods that have been improved in recent years and outlook the challenges that the automobile industry is facing.
