Abstract:The red-headed blister beetle, Epicauta ruficeps Illiger (Coleoptera: Meloidae), is gregarious and often congregate in large swarms on the pattlownia trees. For being the ability of excreting cantharidin, it keeps a long history of pharmacological usage in different countries of the world. In this study, the external morphology, types, and distribution of antennal sensilla in both male and female of this beetle were described using the scanning electron microscope. Ten morphological types of sensilla are recorded in both males and females beedes, including B(o)hm bristles, sensilla trichoid (ST1 and ST2 in female, and ST1, ST2, and ST3 in male), sensilla chaedca, sensilla basiconica (SB1, SB2, and SB3), sensilla campaniform, and cudcular pores. In addition, the possible functions of the above sensilla types are discussed in light of previously published literature.
