Abstract:We study the noncommutative $\phi^4$ theory with spontaneously broken global O(2) symmetry in 4 dimensions. We demonstrate the renormalizability at one loop. This does not require any choice of ordering of the fields in the interaction terms. It involves regulating the ultraviolet and infrared divergences in a manner consistent with the Ward identities.

Geometric Phase in Stückelberg Interferometry

Abstract:We study the time evolution of a two-dimensional quantum particle exhibiting a two-band energy spectrum with two Dirac cones as, for example, in the honeycomb lattice. A force is applied such that the particle experiences two Landau-Zener transitions in succession in the vicinity of the Dirac cones. The adiabatic evolution between the two transitions leads to St\"uckelberg interferences, due to two possible trajectories in energy-momentum space. In addition to well-known dynamical and Stokes phases, the interference pattern reveals a geometric phase which depends on the chirality (winding number) and the mass sign associated with each Dirac cone, as well as on the type of trajectory (parallel or diagonal with respect to the two cones) in parameter space. This geometric phase reveals the coupling between the bands encoded in the structure of the wave functions. St\"uckelberg interferometry therefore appears as a way to access both intra- and interband geometric information.

Abstract:The exact solution and time evolution operator for the SU(1,1) system are obtained by making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld theory. The time-evolution operator is used to derive the Aharonov-Anandan phase. The noncyclic evolution is then discussed with the help of the Aharonov-Anandan phase. Finally, the Berry phase is calculated by taking the adiabatic limit.

Abstract:Geometric phase (GP) independent of energy and time rely only on the geometry of state space. It has been argued to have potential fault tolerance and plays an important role in quantum information and quantum computation. We present the first experiment for producing and measuring an Abelian geometric phase shift in a three-level system by using NMR interferometry. In contrast to existing experiments, based on the geometry of S^2, our experiment concerns the geometric phase with the geometry of SU(3)/U(2). Two interacting qubits have been used to provide such a three-dimensional Hilbert space.

Abstract:The concept of gauge field is a cornerstone of modern physics and the synthetic gauge field has emerged as a new way to manipulate particles in many disciplines. In optics, several schemes of Abelian synthetic gauge fields have been proposed. Here, we introduce a new platform for realizing synthetic SU(2) non-Abelian gauge fields acting on two-dimensional optical waves in a wide class of anisotropic materials and discover novel phenomena. We show that a virtual non-Abelian Lorentz force arising from material anisotropy can induce light beams to travel along Zitterbewegung trajectories even in homogeneous media. We further design an optical non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm system which results in the exotic spin density interference effect. We can extract the Wilson loop of an arbitrary closed optical path from a series of gauge fixed points in the interference fringes. Our scheme offers a new route to study SU(2) gauge field related physics using optics.

Abstract:A set of relations between the modulus and phase is derived for amplitudes of the form $\mels{\hatu(x)}$ where $\hat{U}(x) \in SU(n)$ in the fundamental representation and $x$ denotes the coordinates on the group manifold. An illustration is given for the case $n=2$ as well as a brief discussion of phase singularities and superoscillatory phase behavior for such amplitudes. The present results complement results obtained previously \cite{PMrel1} for amplitudes valued on the ray space ${\cal R} = {\mathbb C}P^n$. The connection between the two is discussed.

Abstract:We present and implement a method for the experimental measurement of geometric phase of non-geodesic (small) circles on any SU(2) parameter space. This phase is measured by subtracting the dynamic phase contribution from the total phase accumulated. Our design does not require theoretical anticipation of this dynamic phase value and the methods are generally applicable to any system accessible to interferometric and projection measurements. Experimental implementations are presented for two settings: (1) the sphere of modes of orbital angular momentum, and (2) the Poincaré sphere of polarizations of Gaussian beams.

Abstract:We provide a physical prescription based on interferometry for introducing the total phase of a mixed state undergoing unitary evolution, which has been an elusive concept in the past. We define the parallel transport condition that provides a connection form for obtaining the geometric phase for mixed states. The expression for the geometric phase for mixed state reduces to well known formulas in the pure state case when a system undergoes noncyclic and unitary quantum evolution.

Geometric phases in astigmatic optical modes of arbitrary order

Abstract:The transverse spatial structure of a paraxial beam of light is fully characterized by a set of parameters that vary only slowly under free propagation. They specify bosonic ladder operators that connect modes of different order, in analogy to the ladder operators connecting harmonic-oscillator wave functions. The parameter spaces underlying sets of higher-order modes are isomorphic to the parameter space of the ladder operators. We study the geometry of this space and the geometric phase that arises from it. This phase constitutes the ultimate generalization of the Gouy phase in paraxial wave optics. It reduces to the ordinary Gouy phase and the geometric phase of non-astigmatic optical modes with orbital angular momentum states in limiting cases. We briefly discuss the well-known analogy between geometric phases and the Aharonov-Bohm effect, which provides some complementary insights in the geometric nature and origin of the generalized Gouy phase shift. Our method also applies to the quantum-mechanical description of wave packets. It allows for obtaining complete sets of normalized solutions of the Schrödinger equation. Cyclic transformations of such wave packets give rise to a phase shift, which has a geometric interpretation in terms of the other degrees of freedom involved.

Abstract:Off-diagonal geometric phases acquired in the evolution of a spin-1/2 system have been investigated by means of a polarized neutron interferometer. Final counts with and without polarization analysis enable us to observe simultaneously the off-diagonal and diagonal geometric phases in two detectors. We have quantitatively measured the off-diagonal geometric phase for noncyclic evolutions, confirming the theoretical predictions. We discuss the significance of our experiment in terms of geometric phases (both diagonal and off-diagonal) and in terms of the quantum erasing phenomenon.

Abstract:Abstract SU(1,1) interferometry, proposed in a classic 1986 paper by Yurke, McCall, and Klauder, involves squeezing, displacing, and then unsqueezing two bosonic modes. It has, over the past decade, been implemented in a variety of experiments. Here, SU(1,1) interferometry is taken apart, to see how and why it ticks. SU(1,1) interferometry arises naturally as the two‐mode version of active‐squeezing‐enhanced, back‐action‐evading measurements aimed at detecting the phase‐space displacement of a harmonic oscillator subjected to a classical force. Truncating an SU(1,1) interferometer, by omitting the second two‐mode squeezer, leaves a prototype that uses the entanglement of two‐mode squeezing to detect and characterize a disturbance on one of the two modes from measurement statistics gathered from both modes.
A Geometric View of Closure Phases in Interferometry

Abstract:Closure phase is the phase of a closed-loop product of correlations in a $\ge 3$-element interferometer array. Its invariance to element-based phase corruption makes it invaluable for interferometric applications that otherwise require high-accuracy phase calibration. However, its understanding has remained mainly mathematical and limited to the aperture plane (Fourier dual of image plane). Here, we lay the foundations for a geometrical insight. we show that closure phase and its invariance to element-based corruption and to translation are intricately related to the conserved properties (shape, orientation, and size, or SOS) of the principal triangle enclosed by the three fringes formed by a closed triad of array elements, which is referred herein as the "SOS conservation principle". When element-based amplitude calibration is not needed, as is typical in optical interferometry, the 3-element interference image formed from phase-uncalibrated correlations is a true and uncorrupted representation of the source object's morphology, except for a possible shift. Based on this SOS conservation principle, we present two geometric methods to measure the closure phase directly from a 3-element interference image (without requiring an aperture-plane view): (i) the closure phase is directly measurable from any one of the triangle's heights, and (ii) the squared closure phase is proportional to the product of the areas enclosed by the triad of array elements and the principal triangle in the aperture and image planes, respectively. We validate this geometric understanding across a wide range range of interferometric conditions using data from the Very Large Array and the Event Horizon Telescope. This geometric insight can be potentially valuable to other interferometric applications such as optical interferometry. These geometric relationships are generalised for an $N$-element interferometer.

Abstract:Geometric phases play a central role in a variety of quantum phenomena, especially in condensed matter physics. Recently, it was shown that this fundamental concept exhibits a connection to quantum phase transitions where the system undergoes a qualitative change in the ground state when a control parameter in its Hamiltonian is varied. Here we report the first experimental study using the geometric phase as a topological test of quantum transitions of the ground state in a Heisenberg XY spin model. Using NMR interferometry, we measure the geometric phase for different adiabatic circuits that do not pass through points of degeneracy.

Abstract:A SU(1,1) interferometer (SUI) is a kind of quantum entangled interferometer that uses directly entangled quantum fields for sensing phase change. For rotational sensing, Sagnac geometry is usually adopted. However, because SUI depends on the phase sum of the two arms, traditional Sagnac geometry, when applied to SUI, will result in null signal. In this paper, we modify the traditional Sagnac interferometer by nesting SUIs inside. We show that the rotational signal comes from two parts labeled as "classical" and "quantum," respectively, and the quantum part, where quantum entangled fields are used for sensing, has the rotational signal enhanced by a factor related to the gain of the SUI.

Abstract:Geometrical phases have been applied in virtually every major branch of physics and they play an important role in topology and knot theory in mathematics and quantum computation. However, most of the early works focus on pure quantum states which are very unrealistic and almost never occur in practice. The two existed definitions -Uhlmann's and Sjöqvist's- would result in different values for the geometric phase in general. The definition of geometric phase in mixed state scenario is still an open question. Here we present a unified framework for both approaches within one and the same formalism based on simple interferometry. We then present experimental results which confirm both approaches to mixed state geometric phase and clearly demonstrate that their unification is possible. Our experiments are furthermore the first such to measure Uhlmann's mixed state geometric phase and show in addition that it is different to the Sjöqvist's phase.

Abstract:Two geometric phases of mixed quantum states, known as the interferometric phase and Uhlmann phase, are generalizations of the Berry phase of pure states. After reviewing the two geometric phases and examining their parallel-transport conditions, we specify a class of cyclic processes that are compatible with both conditions and therefore accumulate both phases through their definitions, respectively. Those processes then facilitate a fair comparison between the two phases. We present exact solutions of two-level and three-level systems to contrast the two phases. While the interferometric phase exhibits finite-temperature transitions only in the three-level system but not the two-level system, the Uhlmann phase shows finite-temperature transitions in both cases. Thus, using the two geometric phases as finite-temperature topological indicators demonstrates the rich physics of topology of mixed states.

Abstract:We studied the phase structures of N=1 supersymmetric SO(Nc) gauge theory with Nf flavors in the vector representation as we deformed the N=2 supersymmetric QCD by adding the superpotential of arbitrary polynomial for the adjoint chiral scalar field. Using weak and strong coupling analyses, we determined the most general factorization forms for various breaking patterns. We observed all kinds of smooth transitions for quartic superpotential.

Abstract:Quantum information processing with geometric features of quantum states may provide promising noise-resilient schemes for quantum metrology. In this work, we theoretically explore phase-space geometric Sagnac interferometers with trapped atomic clocks for rotation sensing, which could be intrinsically robust to certain decoherence noises and reach high precision. With the wave guide provided by sweeping ring-traps, we give criteria under which the well-known Sagnac phase is a pure or unconventional geometric phase with respect to the phase space. Furthermore, corresponding schemes for geometric Sagnac interferometers with designed sweeping angular velocity and interrogation time are presented, and the experimental feasibility is also discussed. Such geometric Sagnac interferometers are capable of saturating the ultimate precision limit given by the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound.
