Abstract:This article is intended to provide an overview of recent progress in the studies of cholesterol-based low-molecular mass gelators (LMMGs) with unusual properties, in particular, gelation and selective gelation at room temperature, gel emulsions and gel film formation, etc. Potential applications of the LMMGs in spilled oil collection and water purification are briefly presented.

Abstract:Low-molecular-mass gelators(LMGs) forming gel in organic solvent is an attractive method to produce self-assembled nano-or micromaterials via noncovalent interactions such as van der Waals,H-bonding,and π-π stacking interactions.Conjugated low-molecular-mass gelators have received great interest by supramolecular chemists as their intrinsic optical and electronic properties.This paper summarizes the progress in this domain of recent years,which mainly include OPVs,polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and so on.Their critical gelator concentration in certain organic solvents,topology resulted from self-assembly and gel formation due to some noncovalent interaction are all introduced,and the potential applications of them are summarized.Finally,the conclusion and the prospects for conjugated low molecular weight gelators are stated.

Abstract:Pyridine dicarboxamide derivatives with different side chains,including 4a/4b/4c,5 and 9,were synthesized and their gelation properties were tested.The results showed that these compounds can form stable gels in some organic solvents and the structure of side chain affects gelling property greatly.Ultra-violet-visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to investigate the driving force of gelation.Gels from these compounds are responsive to fluorine anion,indicating the existence of hydrogen bond.The morphologies of xerogels were observed with scanning electron microscopy.Teas parameters of 9 and eight organic solvents were calculated and a Teas plot was constructed.The validity of expected gelation domain in the Teas plot was verified.

Abstract:New cholesterol-based low molecular mass organic gelators bearing a 2-,3-,or 4-pyridyl unit,which are denoted as 1,2,and 3,respectively,have been synthesized,and their corresponding salts(1′,2′,3′) have also been prepared by simply protonating them with HCl.It is revealed that both the gelation behavior of the gelators and the micro-structures of the xerogels strongly depend on the relative position of N atom in the pyridyl unit and the protonation state of the pyridyl unit.FT-IR and 1H NMR studies demonstrate clearly that hydrogen bonding between the amide groups of the gelators play an important role in the formation of the organogels.XRD studies show that the primary assembly of compund 1 in benzene is similar to that of compund 1′ in the same solvent,and furthermore is also similar to that of compund 1 in solid state.The repeat units of the three aggregates are almost the same,and are very close to the size of molecule 1.

Abstract:Phaseselective gelation of mixed un-miscible solvents is of great importance considering its applications in purification and separation, particularly in the recovery of spilled oil and in the purification of water. Gelators with phase-selective gelation properties could be polymers, micro- nano-particles or low-molecular mass gelators(LMMGs). Compared with former two kinds of gelators, gelation using LMMGs as gelators is always reversible. Such reversibility could add additional advantages to practical applications of the gel systems. Progress in the studies of LMMGs with phase-selective gelation properties is reviewed according to the structures of the relevant gelators. Furthermore, prospectives of the studies and the potential applications of the phaseselective gelation phenomenon are also presented.

Abstract:A series of glucono-appended 1-pyrenesulfonyl derivatives containing α,ω-diaminoalkane spacers (Pn, where n, the number of methylene units separating the amino groups, is 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8) have been prepared. Careful analyses of correlations between the structures of these molecules and their gels have provided important insights into the factors responsible for one-dimensional aggregation of small molecules containing both lipophilic and hydrophilic parts. The gelation behavior has been examined in 30 liquids of diverse structure and polarity, and the properties of their gels and the gelation mechanisms have been investigated using a variety of techniques. Possible reasons are discussed regarding why the Pn are better gelators than the corresponding naphthyl analogues (Nn) which had been investigated previously. P2 and P3 are ambidextrous gelators (i.e., they gelate both water and some organic liquids), and P4-P8 gelate some organic liquids which are protic and aprotic, but not water. In at least one of the liquids examined, P3, P4, P6, P7, and P8 form gels at less than 1 w/v % concentrations, and some of the gels in 1-decanol are thixotropic. Analyses of the gelation abilities using Hansen solubility parameters yield both qualitative and quantitative insights into the role of liquid-gelator interactions. For example, the critical gelation concentrations increase generally with increasing polar and hydrogen bonding interactions between the gelators and their liquid components. As revealed by FT-IR, (1)H NMR, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectra, hydrogen-bonding between glucono units and π-π stacking between pyrenyl groups are important in the formation and maintenance of the gel networks. The results from this study, especially those relating the aggregation modes and liquid properties, offer insights for the design of new surfactant-containing low-molecular-mass gelators with predefined gelating abilities.

Abstract:As a typical kind of soft materials, molecular gels have attracted increasing attention during the last few decades owing to their great potential in the applications including biomedicals, soft electronics, controlled growth of organic crystals, water purification, and preparation of 3D printing materials, micro-/nano-materials, high-density energetic materials, etc. It is believed that the main focuses of molecular gel research include: 1) increasing the efficiency of structural modification, 2) extending the functionality of molecular gels, and 3) promoting the real-life applications of molecular gels. In this feature review, we introduce the progress of molecular gel research with dynamic covalent bonds-based molecular gels, controlled growth of organic crystals in molecular gels and soft template-based preparation of high-performance porous polymeric materials as the main contents. In addition, a brief prospect for the future development of molecular gel research is provided.
Synthesis and Gelation Behavior of a Novel Bithiazole Based Low-Molecular-Mass Organic Gelator

Abstract:A novel bithiazole based low-molecular-mass organic gelator was synthesized from 2,2'-diamino-bithiazole through condensation reaction with cholesteryl chloroformate.The structure and purity of the prepared organogelator product were identified by the infrared spectra (FT-IR),the nuclear magnetic resonance spectra for hydrogen (1H-NMR),and the time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF HRMS).The assembly behavior of the prepared organogelator in solution was investigated.The organogelator induces gelation of a wide variety of organic solvents,especially for aromatic solvents.The critical gelation concentration (CGC) of the prepared gelator in toluene is 7 mg·mL-1.The field emission scanning eletron microscope (FE-SEM) images exhibit that the xerogels from toluene and CHCl3 solution contain sheet structure.The curly sheet structures in the xerogel from toluene solution demonstrate that the prepared organogelator has good gelation properties in toluene.The infrared spectra (FT-IR) and UV-vis absorption spectra show that the hydrogen bonding between amide group and the π-π stacking interaction between bithiazoles are the main driving forces for the formation of organogels.

Abstract:On the basis of H-1 NMR analysis of the model complexes formed from ortho-, meta-, and para-phthalic acid with 2-amino-3-hydroxy pyridine (AHP), it was found that the two carboxyl groups located at the ortho position of the benzene ring more easily interact with AHP than those at meta- and para positions. A series of gelators (defined at G1-G5) were prepared from 1,2,4,5-benzene tetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) and AHP at different molar ratios, and their structures were analyzed by H-1 NMR and FT-IR. The gelation performances of the gelators were investigated in details, which indicated that G3 formed at the BTCA/AHP molar ratio of 1.0/2.3 possessed the shortest gelation time, the lowest minimal gelation concentration (MGC), and the highest maximal gel-to-sol dissociation temperature (T-gel). The xerogels were analyzed by SEM and powder X-ray diffraction, especially, the single crystal of G1 obtained directly from the gelling solvent showed complicated hydrogen bonded networks which were a direct evidence to explain the connecting network of the molecules. Based on this, the gelation properties were discussed. The relationship between the structures and properties of the gels is helpful for understanding the gelating mechanism and designing new gelators. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A new series of 3,6-dimethyl-pyrazine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid derivatives were synthesized and both their gelation abilities and thermotropic properties were studied. These compounds are efficient organogelators and easily form stable gels in many organic solvents. Moreover, they are room temperature liquid crystals, which all show hexagonal columnar mesophase. Results of 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultra-violet-visible spectroscopy (UV) showed the driving forces of gelation are intra-hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking and van der Waals interaction. On the other hand, the intra-hydrogen bonding may be essential to the formation of mesophase. A Teas plot was constructed to estimate the gel formation of four synthesized pyrazinecarboxamides in organic solvents.

Abstract:Organic gelator: Diacetyl- and dinaphthyl-terminated hydrazide-based oligomers displayed gelation ability in apolar solvents due to hydrogen bonding and/or π–π stacking interactions, which promoted aggregation along one dimension. Their gels were solvent polarity sensitive. Because of complementary hydrogen-bonding sites, when the ratio of the two gelators was 1:1 in apolar solvents, a multipoint directed supramolecular substitution reaction led to gel–sol transition (shown here).

Abstract:Recently, low molecular weight gelators are getting increasing interests in pharmaceutical field. In the current study, puerarin (PUE), a natural and bioactive flavonoid from the plant Pueraria lobata, was found to be able to gelate water to form hydrogel during cooling down process of its hot solution. In order to explore its gelation mechanism, the crystallization process, characterization, interaction force, morphology, rheological properties of PUE hydrogel were investigated by polarized light microscopy (PLM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Karl Fischer (KF), Raman spectrum, 1H-NMR, environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and rheometer. The results indicated that at a high supersaturation condition, the gelation process of PUE was initiated by nucleation, and then fibers emanated rapidly from the nucleation center. The types of fiber growth changed from "fiber-like" growth to "less-linear" growth as the increase of supersaturation, leading to a denser structure with higher fractal dimension and stronger mechanical properties. Notably, the CO⋯π interaction facilitated the gelation assembly process, and the crystallographic mismatch branching played a vital role in constructing the network of PUE hydrogel.

Abstract:Novel pincer-type, pyridine-bridged bis(benzimidazolylidene)-palladium complexes 5-7 were synthesised from cheap commercial precursors under microwave assistance. Although simple in structure, carbene complexes 5a,b are efficient low-molecular-mass metallogelators. They gelate not only a broad variety of protic and aprotic organic solvents, but also different types of customary ionic liquids (such as imidazolium, pyridinium, pyrazolidinium, piperidinium and ammonium salts) at concentrations as low as 0.5 mg mL(-1). The morphologies of the resulting 3D gel networks composed from long and thin fibres were studied by TEM and light microscopy for a selection of organic and ionic liquids. The achiral gelators are able to induce the formation of helical fibres. The thermal stability of the gel samples increases with the gelator concentration as demonstrated by thermo reversible DSC studies. Temperature-dependent NMR and X-ray diffraction studies, as well as comparisons with pincer complex analogues bearing shorter alkyl chains, suggest that the 3D networks responsible for gelation are based on non-covalent interactions, such as pi-stacking, van der Waals interactions, and hydrogen and metal-metal bonding. Ionic liquids and gels obtained from them and 5a,b display comparable high conductivities, which characterises pyridine-bridged bis(benzimidazolylidene)-palladium pincer complexes as air-stable metallo gelators that efficiently immobilise ionic liquids in low gelator concentration indicating-beyond catalysis-their potential applications in electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Rheological properties are critical for determining real applications of supramolecular gels in various fields. Correspondingly, the modulation of gel rheology will be very important for meeting real requirements. In this aspect, a few strategies were applied to tune the rheological behaviors of supramolecular gels, but some specific interactions like charge transfer (CT) interactions were less explored at the molecular level. Herein, we report a pyrene-containing derivative of diphenylalanine as a donor gelator and naphthalenediimide or 3,5-dinitrobenzene as matching acceptor molecules. It was found that the viscoelastic properties and strength of the original gel could be tuned through addition of different acceptor molecules to the original gel with changing the ratios of the selected acceptor molecules. As a result, storage modulus was continuously adjusted over a wide range from 190,000 to 50,000 Pa by CT interactions. Furthermore, the mechanism of the CT-induced change in rheological properties was understood and clarified through relevant techniques (<i>e.g.</i>, UV-Vis, fluorescence, and FT-IR spectroscopy and TEM). The findings in this work would provide a novel strategy to modulate the rheological properties of supramolecular gels for adaption to broader fields of real applications.

The Fibrous Aggregation Structure-Property Correlation of Supramolecular Hydrogel of Pyromellitic Acid/4-Hydroxypyridine

Abstract:A gelator (G2) synthesized from 1,2,4,5-benzene tetracarboxylic acid and 4-hydroxy pyridine at molar ratio of 1 : 4 was characterized by H-1-NMR and FT-IR. Supramolecular hydrogels were formed via cooling the aqueous solutions of G2 under ambient condition. The influence of cooling speed on the structure of the assembling fibers and the macroscopic properties of the gels was investigated via multiple techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) differential scanning calorimetry ( DSC) and rheology measurements. As decreasing the cooling speed, the fiber size becomes larger, and the gel stability becomes lower. Therefore it is possible to control the gel performances via the environmental stimulation. The gel possesses high mechanical properties as indicated by the rheology measurements. The DSC measurement reveals that the freezing water content for the gels becomes lower as increasing the gelator concentration. Compared with G I synthesized from 1, 2, 4, 5 - benzene tetracarboxylic acid and 4-hydroxy pyridine at molar ratio of 1: 2, G2 gelled water at higher minimum gelator concentration (MGC) and gave the gel with lower gel-to-sol dissociation temperature ( T-gel) at the same concentration. Environmental scanning electron microscopy ( ESEM) was applied to study the naturally hydrated state of gels directly, it was also noticed that the fibrous networks observed by conventional SEM are similar to those obtained by ESEM I which means that the morphology does not change significantly under drying. The relationship between the assembled structure and properties is helpful for understanding the gel formation mechanism and makes the gels suitable for different applications.

Abstract:A series of new low molecular organogelators (LMOGs) with thermotropic mesophase were synthesized via the reaction of 3,6-dimethyl-pyrazine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid with p-alkoxyl anilines. These compounds readily formed stable gels in a variety of organic solvents and their self-assembly behavior, structure–property relationship were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultra-violet–visible spectroscopy (UV). The results showed a combination of intra-hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking and van der Waals interaction resulted in the aggregation of the organogelators to form three-dimension fibrous networks. The gels formed were multi-responsive to environmental stimuli, such as temperature, fluorinion, and shear stress. More importantly, all the organogelators exhibited thermotropic hexagonal column mesophase as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and variable temperature XRD studies. A control compound was synthesized and its gelling ability was also checked.

Abstract:2,6-Di[N-carboxyethyl carbonyl] pyridine(DAP) was designed and synthesized from amber acid and 2,6-diaminopyridine.And the gelling performances of DAP was studied.The results showed that DAP could form hydrogel by self-assembly in aqueous solution;the lowest gelation concentration was 43 mg/mL;the stable hydrogel would collapse into precipitation at temperature of 81 ℃;DAP could not form hydrogel in alkaline solution.The gel of DAP was analysized and characterized by XRD,SEM,and FT-IR.And the results showed that the gel had polycrystalline fiber network structure and was formed by intermolecular hydrogen bonds.
