Abstract:Many problems in power systems depend on parameters, which could be stochastic variables or deterministic system control variables practically, e.g., generation outputs, nodal voltages, etc. Due to the nonlinearity of power systems, the analytical relation between system states and parameters cannot be obtained directly. Using the sampling method to evaluate the influence of parameters on system states is very powerful but time-consuming. One feasible approach is to use polynomial approximations, where the system states are approximately expressed in the form of polynomials in terms of parameters. Galerkin method can be used to identify the approximate solution with high accuracy by solving high-dimensional equations. However, if a large number of parameters are involved, solving these high-dimensional equations becomes a serious challenge. This paper proposes an innovative method for resolving these high-dimensional equations in power systems, which constructs a sequence of decoupled equations to determine the polynomial expansion coefficients. This new approach can provide a local approximation in the form of Taylor expansion at a given operation point. Although the method is general, for simplicity and good readability, we introduce the detailed process in its application to load flow problems. Case studies from 6-, 118-, and 1648-bus system show that the proposed method provides approximation more efficiently than traditional Galerkin method does, and 3-order polynomials can give very accurate results.

Abstract:Different from the construction process of the traditional finite difference method, we derive a large class of high-accuracy methods for approximating derivatives. Since Taylor expansion is avoided, the requirement for function smoothness in the new methods is greatly reduced. We analyze the approximation errors of the proposed methods and compare their approximation effects. As a typical application, we use the proposed methods to solve Elliptic, Hyperbolic and Parabolic problems numerically. For time-dependent problems, a class of new fully implicit difference schemes and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method are both used for discretization . When using fully implicit difference schemes, unconditional stability and convergence are proved for hyperbolic and parabolic problems with the periodic boundary conditions. A large number of numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:Parametric problems in the transient analysis refer to the investigations of the relationship between parameters and dynamic behavior. To solve parametric problems, we propose a Galerkin method-based polynomial approximation. The proposed method uses a series of polynomials combined with coefficients to approximately represent state variables with parameters, where the Galerkin method is introduced to determine the coefficients. Thereby, the relationship between parameters and dynamic behavior is established through the polynomial expressions. Because models in power system transient analysis are a set of complicated differential-algebraic equations, practical issues related to the non-polynomial model terms, parameterization of initial operation point are discussed in this paper. The proposed method is tested on a three-machine system and the IEEE 145-bus test system. The case studies show that compared to trajectory sensitivities, the proposed method can maintain high accuracy in cases of large parameter variations and strong non-linearity. We also illustrate that the validity of the proposed method for parametric problems like trajectory approximation, finding the critical parameter values and uncertainty quantification.

Abstract:In a harmonically weighted Dirichlet space , where is a finitely supported discrete measure, Taylor polynomials of a function do not necessarily converge. We show that by properly modifying a fix number of final coefficients in Taylor polynomials of f , a new sequence is created which converges to f . The number of coefficients to be modified is at most equal to the cardinality of the support of , a fact which was first observed in (Mashreghi and Ransford in Complex Anal Synerg 7:1-11, 2021) for the special case of cardinality one. We also show that the n th modified polynomial can be interpreted as the orthogonal projection onto the subspace of polynomials of degree n under a suitable norm on .

Abstract:We describe an expansion of Legendre polynomials, analogous to the Taylor expansion, to approximate arbitrary functions. We show that the polynomial coefficients in Legendre expansion, therefore the whole series, converge to zero much more rapidly compared to the Taylor expansion of the same order. Furthermore, using numerical analysis using sixth-order polynomial expansion, we demonstrate that the Legendre polynomial approximation yields an error at least an order of magnitude smaller than the analogous Taylor series approximation. This strongly suggests that Legendre expansions, instead of Taylor expansions, should be used when global accuracy is important.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an approach to enhance interpolation and approximation error estimates. Based on a previously derived first-order Taylor-like formula, we demonstrate its applicability in improving the $P_1$-interpolation error estimate. Following the same principles, we also develop a novel numerical scheme for the heat equation that yields a better error estimate compared to the classical implicit finite differences scheme.

Abstract:This paper gives approximations for the stable manifolds and unstable manifolds of the hyperbolic equilibrium points, using a precise expression of Taylor series expansion in terms of semi-tensor product under certain non-singularity assumption. Furthermore, it presents two approaches to obtain the coefficient matrix of the second order term of the quadratic approximations in the form of Hessian matrix. The proposed approximations are based on the explicit partial differential equations which are shown to be satisfied by respective stable and unstable manifolds. Examples involving linear and nonlinear systems are solved showing the effectiveness of the proposed method.
On Taylor-like Estimates for $L^{2}$ Polynomial Approximations

Abstract:Polynomial series approximations are a central theme in approximation theory. Two types of series, which are featured most prominently in pure and applied mathematics, are Taylor series expansions and expansions derived based on families of $L^{2}-$orthogonal polynomials on bounded intervals. The identity theorem implies that all such series agree on $\mathbb{C}$ in the limit. This motivates an effort to derive properties, which relate the original function to a truncated series based on $L^{2}-$orthogonal polynomial approximation which hold on unbounded intervals. In particular, the Chebyshev series expansion of $e^{x}$ is studied and an algebraic criterion which can be used to confirm bounds analogous to the Taylor series upper and lower bound estimates for $x<0$ is provided. In addition to this, the generalizations to other settings involving different functions and alternative families of $L^{2}$-orthogonal polynomials are discussed.

On Defects of Taylor Series Approximation in Heat Conduction Models

Abstract:Taylor series approximation like q(t + tau) approximate to q + tau partial derivative q/partial derivative t are often used to derive, extend or interpret typical heat conduction models. Researchers may take it for granted that the single-phase-lagging (SPL) model can be considered as an extension of the Cattaneo-Vernotte (CV) model because there is such approximation relationship between them. We point out in this paper that this Taylor series approximation itself has some defects based on analyses in mathematics, physics and some examples first. Then, we show essential differences in both mathematics and physics between the CV and SPL models. It is found that their mathematical characteristics and accordance with the laws of thermodynamics are significantly different, which indicates that using this approximation to connect the two models may be defective in some cases. What's more, higher order approximation can't solve these problems and defects. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Scaling Optimized Hermite Approximation Methods

Abstract:Hermite polynomials and functions are widely used for scientific and engineering problems. Although it is known that using the scaled Hermite function instead of the standard one can significantly enhance approximation performance, understanding of the scaling factor is inadequate. To this end, we propose a novel error analysis framework for the scaled Hermite approximation. Taking the $L^2$ projection error as an example, our results illustrate that when using truncated $N$ terms of scaled Hermite functions to approximate a function, there are three different components of error: spatial truncation error; frequency truncation error; and Hermite spectral approximation error. Through our insight, finding the optimal scaling factor is equivalent to balancing the spatial and frequency truncation error. As an example, we show that geometric convergence can be recovered by proper scaling for a class of functions. Furthermore, we show that proper scaling can double the convergence order for smooth functions with algebraic decay. The puzzling pre-asymptotic sub-geometric convergence when approximating algebraic decay functions can be perfectly explained by this framework.

Abstract:In this present paper, I propose a derivation of unified interpolation and extrapolation function that predicts new values inside and outside the given range by expanding direct Taylor series on the middle point of given data set. Mathematical construction of experimental model derived in general form. Trigonometric and Power functions adopted as test functions in the development of the vital aspects in numerical experiments. Experimental model was interpolated and extrapolated on data set that generated by test functions. The results of the numerical experiments which predicted by derived model compared with analytical values.

Abstract:A general fractional Taylor formula and its computation for insufficiently smooth functions are discussed. The Aitken delta square method and epsilon algorithm are implemented to compute the critical orders of the local fractional derivatives, from which more critical orders are recovered by analysing the regular pattern of the fractional Taylor formula. The Richardson extrapolation method is used to calculate the local fractional derivatives with critical orders. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:We establish a new generalized Taylor's formula for power fractional derivatives with nonsingular and nonlocal kernels, which includes many known Taylor's formulas in the literature. Moreover, as a consequence, we obtain a general version of the classical mean value theorem. We apply our main result to approximate functions in Taylor's expansions at a given point. The explicit interpolation error is also obtained. The new results are illustrated through examples and numerical simulations.

Abstract:We provide a primer to numerical methods based on Taylor series expansions such as generalized finite difference methods and collocation methods. We provide a detailed benchmarking strategy for these methods as well as all data files including input files, boundary conditions, point distribution and solution fields, so as to facilitate future benchmarking of new methods. We review traditional methods and recent ones which appeared in the last decade. We aim to help newcomers to the field understand the main characteristics of these methods and to provide sufficient information to both simplify implementation and benchmarking of new methods. Some of the examples are chosen within a subset of problems where collocation is traditionally known to perform sub-par, namely when the solution sought is non-smooth, i.e. contains discontinuities, singularities or sharp gradients. For such problems and other simpler ones with smooth solutions, we study in depth the influence of the weight function, correction function, and the number of nodes in a given support. We also propose new stabilization approaches to improve the accuracy of the numerical methods. In particular, we experiment with the use of a Voronoi diagram for weight computation, collocation method stabilization approaches, and support node selection for problems with singular solutions. With an appropriate selection of the above-mentioned parameters, the resulting collocation methods are compared to the moving least-squares method (and variations thereof), the radial basis function finite difference method and the finite element method. Extensive tests involving two and three dimensional problems indicate that the methods perform well in terms of efficiency (accuracy versus computational time), even for non-smooth solutions.

Abstract:This paper addresses the approximation of fractional harmonic maps. Besides a unit-length constraint, one has to tackle the difficulty of nonlocality. We establish weak compactness results for critical points of the fractional Dirichlet energy on unit-length vector fields. We devise and analyze numerical methods for the approximation of various partial differential equations related to fractional harmonic maps. The compactness results imply the convergence of numerical approximations. Numerical examples on spin chain dynamics and point defects are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

The main issue of this work is to establish the convergence quality of the truncated error given by the series expansion of a function in CPSWFs basis, then to extend the previous challenge in the norm, $4/3<p<4$ . In the meantime, we will give two uniform approximations of the previous system by Bessel function of the first kind and a modified Jacobi polynomial which will be the important step to avoid all obstacles. Abstract:In this paper, we obtain the analytical solutions of two kinds of transcendental equations with numerous applications in college physics by means of Lagrange inversion theorem, and rewrite them in the form of ratio of rational polynomials by second order Pad\'e approximant afterwards from a practical and instructional perspective. Our method is illustrated in a pedagogical manner for the purpose that students at the undergraduate level will be beneficial. The approximate formulas introduced in the paper can be applied to abundant examples in physics textbooks, such as Fraunhofer single slit diffraction, Wien's displacement law and Schr\"odinger equation with single or double $\delta$ potential. These formulas, consequently, can reach considerable accuracies according to the numerical results, therefore they promise to act as valuable ingredients in the standard teaching curriculum.
