Abstract:In this paper, we report on the solid superacids, ZrO2 modified by persulfate, and their activities in n-butane isomerization. The factors affecting their properties, including calcination temperature, impregnation concentration and the conditions for preparing the precursor ZrO2, are studied. The results indicate that the sample which is prepared by impregnation reverse-dropping-coprecipitated zirconia with 0. 25-0.50 mol/L persulfate and then calcination at 600-650°C shows the highest superacidity. Compared with sulfated zirconia prepared under the same conditions, the activity of n-butane isomerization at 25°C on persulfated zirconia is twice as high as that on sulfated zirconia because of its more intermediate-strong acid sites and different active sites.

Abstract:The composite solid oxide super acid Pt-SO4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared, and its structure, surface properties and catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction were investigated by XRD, XPS, SEM, FT-IR. The results showed that the optimum A12O3 loading in the catalyst made ZrO2 tetragonal phase stable, prevented the transformation of ZrO2 from tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase. Pt doping on SO 4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 improved the catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction. When the content of Al was 1.5% in the catalyst, the yield of i-butane was 37%, and its selectivity reached 70% above.

Abstract:The n-butane isomerization reaction on Al-promoted zirconia catalysts modified by persulfate was studied both at low temperature in the absence of hydrogen and at high temperature in the presence of hydrogen. The addition of Al shows a significant enhancement in the activity and stability of the samples for n-butane isomerization at 250°C. After running on stream for 200 h, the n-butane conversion on the catalyst containing 3 mol% Al2O3 remains steady at 72% of its equilibrium conversion and no observable trend of further deactivation has been observed. The different behavior of the with or without Al-promoted catalysts at low temperature and high temperature is probably associated with a change of reaction mechanism from bimolecular to monomolecular. Microcalorimetric measurements of ammonia adsorption on catalysts reveal that the remarkable activity and stability of the Al-promoted catalysts are caused by an appropriate distribution of acid site strengths and an enhancement in the number of acid sites with intermediate acid strengths effective for the n-butane isomerization reaction.

Abstract:Solid superacid catalysts SO42-/ZrO2 (SZ) supported on gamma-Al2O3 and SiO2 (named SZ/Al2O3 and SZ/SiO2, respectively) were prepared by an impregnation method. Their catalytic behaviors of for n-butane isomerization at low temperature in steady state system and at high temperature in flow system were studied. Large improvements of catalytic activities were observed on the SZ/Al2O3 catalysts. In the flow system, the steady activity of the most active sample, 60% SZ/Al2O3, is 2.5 times more active than that of the hulk SZ. However, the activities of the SZ/SiO2 catalysts are lower than that of hulk SZ. The texture properties of the catalysts were studied by the methods of XRD and the adsorption of N-2. Experimental results of sulfur content analysis and IR of adsorbed pyridine show that the acid strength and amount of strong acid sites on 60% SZ/Al2O3 sample are higher than those on bulk SZ, while the amount of acid sites is lower on 60% SZ/SiO2. The different activities for the SZ/Al2O3 catalysts and the eSZ/SiO2 catalysts are due to the differences of superacidity. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Solid acid catalysts of graphene oxide and sulfonated graphene oxide nanosheets have been prepared by using the modified Hummers and sulfonation methods. Physical characterization indicated that a number of functional groups such as -COOH, -OH, -O-, and -SO3H were introduced onto the surfaces of the as-synthesized nanosheets. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts was evaluated in the hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond and Fischer esterification. The experimental results indicated that the catalytic activity of the sulfonated graphene oxide was superior to that of other solid acid catalysts with the same or higher acid strength and has also exceeded that of H2SO4 with 9.1 times of acid strength than that of the sulfonated graphene oxide. The high reactivity can be ascribed to the formation of hydrophobic cavities through the combination of graphene sheet and the oxygen-containing groups on its surface, which may facilitate the catalyst to anchor with reactants and promote the attack of protons.
Studies on γ-Al2O3 Supported Cr Promoted SO2- 4/ZrO2 Solid Superacid Catalysts

Abstract:The Cr-SZ/Al2O3 series solid superacid catalysts were prepared first by supporting Cr promoted SO2- 4/ZrO2 (SZ) solid superacid catalysts, Cr-SZ, on γ-Al2O3 support. The variation rules of their superacidities, medium strong acidities and weak acidities were investigated by using model reactions. The surface area, sulfur content and zirconia crystallization as well as the catalytic activity of samples for n-butane isomerization at low temperature were also studied in detail. It was shown that the both introducing Cr species and supporting Cr-SZ on γ-Al2O3 were beneficial to stabilize the tetragonal ZrO2 crystal phase that are supposed to be one of the basic conditions of superacidity. Moreover the SO3 contents of the supported samples were much larger than those of both Cr-SZ and SZ sample. The catalytic activities of some Cr-SZ samples for n-butane isomerization were improved greatly after supporting them on γ-Al2O3. The improvement of both acidity and dehydrogenation ability of samples containing Cr makes contribution to the increasing of their catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization. Cr-SZ/Al2O3 sample with proper acidity and dehydrogenation ability shows a high activity for n-butane isomerization.

Abstract:Some solid acids, including sulfated zirconia and certain industrial isomerization catalysts, catalyze two types of n-butane isomerizations, avoiding primary carbenium ions or carbonium ions: (1) an internal rearrangement of the C atoms in n-butane and (2) skeletal isomerization of n-butane to iso-butane. No superacid sites are required for these reactions. The skeletal isomerization is an intermolecular reaction, involving a C8 intermediate. Easily accessible Brønsted acid sites and small amounts of olefin are crucial. Spectroscopic examination of the acid sites on sulfated zirconia shows that they are not stronger than the acid sites in zeolites such as HY. The butane isomerization rate is suppressed by CO, even when no CO is adsorbed on Lewis sites; formation of oxocarbenium ions is likely. The decisive role of Brønsted acid sites is demonstrated by results on deuterated catalysts.

Abstract:The preparation of peroxodisulfated zirconia(PSZ) solid strong acid catalysts is introduced. It showed more active than sulfated zirconia (SZ) for n-butane isomerization at ambient temperature, Peroxodisulfate is the first type of nonhalide found to be more efficient than sulfate which so far has been found the best one promoted zirconia. The optimum calcination temperature is 600 degrees C which is 50 degrees C lower than that of SZ, The conversion of n-butane over PSZ was 50. 4% during 20 h and at 35 degrees C, and 36. 7% over SZ under the same condition. According to X-Ray differential, TEM, BET and chemical analysis, it can be concluded that the formation of superacids over PSZ is similar to that over SZ, It is worth to point out the particle sizes of PSZ calcined between 500 degrees C and 800 degrees C are in the range of nanometers, and the optimum PSZ has both tetragonal and limited monoclinic zirconia.

Abstract:Ultrafine SO42−/ZrO2 superacid catalysts were prepared in a two-step synthesis by impregnating ultrafine crystalline ZrO2 with sulfuric acid. Ultrafine crystalline zirconia was obtained by supercritical drying of an alcogel. The crystallization, crystal size, surface area, sulfur content, acid strength and catalytic activity for n-butane isomerization of sulfated amorphous and ultrafine crystalline zirconia were tested and compared. The catalyst prepared from ultrafine crystalline zirconia has smaller crystallite size, larger surface area, greater sulfur content and higher superacidity. Hence, it displays higher catalytic activity and stability for n-butane isomerization.

Microcalorimetric measurements of NH3 adsorption on catalysts reveal that the remarkable activity and stability of the Al-promoted catalysts are caused by an enhancement in the number of acid sites effective for the isomerization reaction.
