Abstract:An optimization method for registration and mosaicking of remote sensing images has been proposed. More than four pairs of control points extracted by scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) detector have been used to obtain the projective transformation relation between the reference image and text image. A method based on gradient information of the region has been proposed to assign the weighted value to the feature points. The weighted value reflects the importance of the area, which can change the result of optimization. The combination method of seam cutting and feathering technique is used to stitch two overlapped images. Our experiment shows that the alignment error of interest area is smaller than that of normal area. If the weighted parameter is given proper value, the alignment error of interest area can reduced to less than one pixel.

Abstract:Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases among women, it is important to give patients early diagnose and treatment. Mammography has become the most effective way for detection of breast cancer, and it is sensitive to clustered micro-calcification which is the key characteristic of early breast tumors. In this paper, we propose a method of detection micro-calcification. We first select the regions of interest (ROI) from the whole breast area by using wavelet and adaptive thresholds according to each mammogram, which are the doubtful micro-calcification regions; then the ROIs are further analyzed by DOG filter to reduce false positive rate. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can provide good detection performance.

Abstract:In connection with the efficiency problem of narrow-band PACS medical images transmission and display and following the DICOM 3.0 standard and JPEG2000 code stream properties of progressing transmission and free access, this paper presents a new parallel processing method of the images transmission and display. This method raises the performance of images' transmission, storage and display, and has been evaluated in the clinical medical diagnosis information system.

Abstract:This paper study softcopy display algorithms of digital radiographic images acquired using a prototype flat panel detector. The processing is manipulated in two steps. Firstly, a look up table is applied to map the gray value of original image into proper visual scope. Then, the mapped image is decomposed into a serial subband images with a multiscale pyramid structure. The contrast of subband images are enhanced by using nolinear functions. Both performance and computational simplicity make our algorithms attractive.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new dots homogenization algorithm in digital screening technology. The algorithm provides a solution about homogenizing the maximal surface size of each screen dot as far as possible. The paper also provides an objective quality statistical method to judge the dot homogenization level. The technique has solved moiré patterns phenomenon when printing in traditional pattern for the random of dot. Output image is more accurate and more soft since screen dots are more even. It has a low request for equipment and subsequent handling, and entirely meet the needs of traditional printing technology.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to detect and discriminate abnormal and cueing signatures in mammography through enhancing the imaging contrast. Partial gland and adipose tissues are removed, and thus, the visual effect of mammography will be enhanced. Inspired by single image haze removal, we remove the majority of background tissues by introducing the idea of image matting. Experimental results show the feasibility and performance on distinguishing focuses from healthy tissues in the enhanced mammography. Abstract:Current dedicated breast-CT prototypes use analytic-based algorithms such as FDK for image reconstruction, which require a large number of densely sampled views. Because the total imaging dose delivered to a patient in a breast-CT scan is kept about the same as that in a typical two-view mammography exam, the use of a large number of views thus can lead to projection data of low SNR and images with high noise, which makes reconstruction improvement challenging. Recently, there exists increased interest in development and evaluation of optimization-based (i.e. iterative) image reconstruction algorithms for low-dose cone-beam CT (CBCT). In the work, we focus on investigation of optimization-based image reconstruction for low-dose breast CT by tailoring a TV-minimization-based algorithm, adaptive-steep-descent (ASD)-projection-onto-convex-set (POCS) algorithm, for image reconstruction from low-SNR patient data. We performed inverse-crime studies for verifying if the algorithm is solving the designed optimization program, and studied the effect of optimization program parameter, ε, on the reconstruction images. We also studied the change of image power spectra with ε and iteration numbers. The results indicate that optimization-based algorithms may improve image quality over analytic-based algorithm for low-dose dedicated breast CT.
FAST SCREENING OUT TRUE NEGATIVE REGIONS FOR MICROCALCIFICATION DETECTION IN DIGITAL MAMMOGRAMS

Abstract:A method is proposed to avoid complex computation in finding the region of interest (ROI) in a mammogram. In the method, the true negative region (TNR) definitely containing no microcalcification clusters (MCCs) is screened out, thus obtaining ROIs. The strategy consists of three steps: (1) the mammogram is partitioned into a set of non-overlapping blocks with an equal size, and for each block, five statistical features are computed. (2) negative blocks are screened out by the threshold method through rough analyses. (3) the more accurate analysis is done by the cost-sensitive support vector machine to eliminate the block definitely containing no MCCs. Experimental results on real mammograms show that 81.71% of TNRs can be screened out by the proposed method.

Abstract:The quality of the image is one of the important influential factors in the process of defect evaluation of weld radiographic image. To improve the brightness and contrast of digital image of weld radiographic film, a new quality enhancement method in accordance with human visual system is proposed. The human visual resolution ability of the gray and the imaging model of digital system are introduced, then the gray-level mapping transformation function is given in this paper. The processed method is compared with the images enhanced by histogram equalization, linear strength and logarithmic transformation. An experimental case study is provided to illustrate our work, the results demonstrated that the proposed method can improve Peak Signal to Noise Ratio, structure similarity and correlation coefficient by 17.6 times, 1.8 times and 0.2 times, reduce mean absolute error and mean square error by 75% and 94%.

Abstract:This paper proposed a novel contrast equalization algorithm for display or print ready processing of x-ray chest radiograph based on a multi-scale decomposition and reconstruction architecture. Firstly, using this architecture, the original image is decomposed into multi-scale components. At this stage, three methods are used. The first two methods are based on Gauss convolution filters and the third is based on mean curvature motion equation, which is one of nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) models. Secondly the components at different scale are weighted using a set of controlled equalization coefficients and then integrated into the display or print ready image to ensure the improvement of the visibility of weakly contrasting details and the contrast between tissues in different area. Preliminary experiments on clinical images in deed testify the superiority of our algorithm. This algorithm can effectively improve contrast of low-contrast-region, increase the detail visibility of the rendered image to CRT or film as the image latitude has adequate broad.
STUDY ON THE ENHANCEMENT AND DENOISING OF MAMMOGRAMS

Abstract:A new algorithm for mammograms enhancement and denoising based on multiscale geometric analysis(MGA) was proposed.Firstly,mammograms were decomposed into different scales and directional subbands by using nonsubsampled contourlet transform(NSCT).After modeling the coefficients of each directional subbands and using generalized gaussian mixture model(GGMM) according to the statistical property of the transform coefficients,they were categorized into strong edges,weak edges and noise by Bayesian classifier.A nonlinear mapping function was designed to enhance and suppress the different coefficients adaptively so as to obtain a good enhancement result with significant features according to the property of every subband coefficient.Finally,the mammograms were obtained by reconstructing the original maps with the modified coefficients of NSCT.Experimental results illustrate that the proposed approach is practicable and robust.

Abstract:Mammography is one of the most widely used and effective ways to screen early breast cancer. Convolutional-neural-network-based methods have obtained promising results for automatic mammography diagnosis. However, most of those approaches ignore the relationship between global and local characteristics of mammograms and lose sight of the relationship between different views of a patient. This study designs a novel region label assignment strategy, which takes advantage of all regions in each mammogram from a patient by assigning different labels to different regions and calculating the loss for each region separately. This approach enables the classifier to distinguish variable and tiny lesions in complex global conditions better. Only one case-level classification label is needed for diagnosing one patient (case). Moreover, the categories of mammogram data sets are always imbalanced. To address this problem, this study designs an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC)-based optimization method on minibatch strategy. Experimental results on a constructed data set and two publicly available data sets demonstrate that the proposed method performs satisfactorily compared with state-of-the-art mammogram classifiers. Visualization results show the proposed method can find out mammograms containing malignant lesions and illustrate the rough location of lesions.

A Novel Image Optimization Method for Dual-Energy Computed Tomography

Abstract:Dual-energy computed tomography (CT) has been widely used in explosive detection as it has the capability of accurate material discrimination. However, its reconstructions always suffer from severe noise and artifacts. In practical application, the computation of effective atomic number is much more sensitive to the noise and decomposition errors, which significantly degrades its image quality. In this paper we introduced a reference image based non-local image optimization method for dual-energy CT, based on the knowledge that dual-energy reconstructions have strictly the same structure and they are precisely registered. Reconstructed low-energy attenuation image from dual-energy CT serves as the reference image in the proposed method. The structure information was derived from the low-energy attenuation image using a non-local pixel similarity measurement, and weight average the effective atomic number image with the established weight relationship in the corresponding position. Experiments with a commercial dual-layer detector CT scanner demonstrated that the proposed strategy achieves much better results in noise and artifacts reduction than previous methods, and significantly improves the image quality.Introduction: We propose a reference image based non-local image optimization method for effective number image in dual-energy CT, which can significantly improve the visual quality and reduce the artifacts. Abstract:Limited angle Breast Computed Tomography uses lower energy and low projection angle to detect early breast cancer or other malignant tissues in the breast. The sensitivity of breast CT can be improved by applying dual energy technology. The general challenge which hampers full exploration of dual energy imaging is noise accumulation as a result of spectral overlaps from two different images. The author proposed hybrid optimization method (HOM) which leverages on fast convergence of simultaneous algebraic reconstruction techniques (SART) and good de-noising and artefacts removal of dictionary learning (DL) to minimizes noise in each image of dual energy and then apply decomposition on the noiseless dual data. The HOM algorithm is formulated as optimization problem which find good atoms from the dictionary obtained and dictionary atom are learned from training data set. The reconstructed images which are noise-free are then decomposed using DECT algorithm into two material basis. 2D phantom known as mbat-phantom consisting of two material basis (microcalcification and normal breast tissue) were simulated to test the algorithm. Noisy projection data were also simulated under the same condition by adding poison noise. The performance of the method was evaluated by estimating some image quality indices on reconstructed images and decomposed images. The proposed method shows the highest average structural similarity index map (SSIM) of 0.9987 and 0.9921 and peak signal to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 49.24 and 46.96 for reconstructed image without noise and noisy image respectively. Also, there is a reduction in average standard deviation (STD) error of decomposed image. Our method performs excellently in streak artefact removal and noise suppression which is capable of reconstructing faithful image in presence of noisy data.

Abstract:Image segmentation is a crucial step in a wide range of method image processing systems. It is useful in visualization of the different objects present in the image. In spite of the several methods available in the literature, image segmentation still a challenging problem in most of image processing applications. The challenge comes from the fuzziness of image objects and the overlapping of the different regions. Detection of edges in an image is a very important step towards understanding image features. There are large numbers of edge detection operators available, each designed to be sensitive to certain types of edges. The Quality of edge detection can be measured from several criteria objectively. Some criteria are proposed in terms of mathematical measurement, some of them are based on application and implementation requirements. Since edges often occur at image locations representing object boundaries, edge detection is extensively used in image segmentation when images are divided into areas corresponding to different objects. This can be used specifically for enhancing the tumor area in mammographic images. Different methods are available for edge detection like Roberts, Sobel, Prewitt, Canny, Log edge operators. In this paper a novel algorithms for edge detection has been proposed for mammographic images. Breast boundary, pectoral region and tumor location can be seen clearly by using this method. For comparison purpose Roberts, Sobel, Prewitt, Canny, Log edge operators are used and their results are displayed. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Conventional mammographic image generation in dual-energy digital mammography

Abstract:Dual-energy digital mammography (DEDM) can generate tissue-subtracted calcification image for improving the detectability of breast calcifications. However, the masses, if present, are missing in the tissue-subtracted calcification image. This paper proposes an algorithm to generate conventional mammographic image by DEDM images based on a multi-scale decomposition and reconstruction architecture with Gaussian filters. Firstly, calibration coefficients are measured at different kVp to correct the original LE and HE. Secondly, the LE and HE images are decomposed into multi-scale components. Thirdly, the components at different scale of the two images are weighted based on a similarity measure to generate new components Finally, the conventional mammographic image is reconstructed by these new components using noise suppression technique. The proposed method was validated by different breast phantoms on two commercially available full-field digital mammography systems. Results show that the method is effective and the reconstructed image has similar grayscale, contrast and noise level to the corresponding conventional mammogram. Therefore, both the calcification image and conventional mammogram-like image can be generated; the patient will not need more exposure to get the conventional mammogram in DEDM.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Mammography analysis is an effective technology for early detection of breast cancer. Micro-calcification clusters (MCs) are a vital indicator of breast cancer, so detection of MCs plays an important role in computer aided detection (CAD) system, this paper proposes a new hybrid method to improve MCs detection rate in mammograms.METHODS:The proposed method comprises three main steps: firstly, remove label and pectoral muscle adopting the largest connected region marking and region growing method, and enhance MCs using the combination of double top-hat transform and grayscale-adjustment function; secondly, remove noise and other interference information, and retain the significant information by modifying the contourlet coefficients using nonlinear function; thirdly, we use the non-linking simplified pulse-coupled neural network to detect MCs.RESULTS:In our work, we choose 118 mammograms including 38 mammograms with micro-calcification clusters and 80 mammograms without micro-calcification to demonstrate our algorithm separately from two open and common database including the MIAS and JSMIT; and we achieve the higher specificity of 94.7%, sensitivity of 96.3%, AUC of 97.0%, accuracy of 95.8%, MCC of 90.4%, MCC-PS of 61.3% and CEI of 53.5%, these promising results clearly demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the current state-of-the-art algorithms. In addition, this method is verified on the 20 mammograms from the People's Hospital of Gansu Province, the detection results reveal that our method can accurately detect the calcifications in clinical application.CONCLUSIONS:This proposed method is simple and fast, furthermore it can achieve high detection rate, it could be considered used in CAD systems to assist the physicians for breast cancer diagnosis in the future.
Scatter correction algorithm without extra exposure for dual-energy digital mammography

Abstract:X-ray scatter leads to erroneous calculations of dual-energy digital mammography (DEDM). The existing methods for scatter correction in DEDM are using anti-scatter grids or the pinhole-array interpolation method which is complicated and impractical. In this paper, a scatter correction algorithm for DEDM is developed based on the knowledge that scatter radiation in mammograms varies slowly and most pixels in mammograms are non-microcalcification pixels. The proposed algorithm only uses the information of low-energy (LE) and high-energy (HE) images. And it doesn't need anti-scatter grids, lead sheet and extra exposures. Our results show that the proposed scatter correction algorithm is effective. When using the simple least-squares fit and linear interpolation, the scatter to primary ratio (SPR) can be decreased from ~33.4% to ~2.8% for LE image and from ~26.2% to ~0.8% for HE image. Applying scatter correction to LE and HE images, the resultant background signal in the DE (dual-energy) calcification image an be reduced significantly. ©2009 SPIE.

Abstract:Breast cancer is one of the most dangerous tumors for middle-aged and older women in China, and mammography is the most reliable detection method. In order to assist the radiologists in detecting the mammograms, a novel computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system was proposed in this paper. It carried out a new algorithm using optimal thresholding and Hough transform to suppress the pectoral muscle, applied an adaptive method based on wavelet and filling dilation to extract the microcalcifications (MCs), used a model-based location and segmentation technique to detect the masses, and utilized MLP to classify the MCs and the masses. A high diagnosis precision with a low false positive rate was finally achieved to validate the proposed system.
