Abstract:AIM: According to the concept of obesity, the establishment of obesity assessment standards depends on whether the superfluous energy accumulation in body can damage health and result in related diseases. This study investigated the correlation between energy metabolism indexes and the results of various obesity evaluation methods to explore the reasonability of obesity evaluation based on energy indexes. METHODS: Using multi-stage random sampling, 3 districts were selected from Xi'an; 2 communities were randomly selected from each district; 120 female people living in Xi'an for 5 years or above were randomly selected from each community. After eliminating 70 people with severe chronic or acute disease and obesity heredity and 93 people with invalid questionnaires, 557 persons were included with an average age of (54.1±2.6) years (range, 50-60 years). Based on the demands of Physical Quality Monitoring Manual for Chinese Citizens, the energy indexes and morphology indexes were measured using three methods: ZW method, in which the body fat rate was calculated using the body density formula of Zhang; BIA method, in which the body fat rate was measured by body constitution analyzer (Tanita, Japan) through bioelectrical impedance; in body mass index (BMI) method, in which the BMI was calculated after body height and body mass were determined according to Adult Physical Constitution in China. In ZW and BIA methods, people with body fat ≥30% were regarded as obesity. In BMI method, people with BMI ≥28 kg/m2 were regarded as obesity. RESULTS: The correlation between the results of different obesity evaluation methods and energy absorption or energy consumption was moderate. There was a high correlation between results of the different obesity evaluation and superfluous energy, and the correlation coefficient was above 0.77. The correlation curves of different evaluation methods and superfluous energy were similar, especially BIA method. The higher the surplus of energy, the higher the results of the different obesity evaluation were. CONCLUSION: There is a close correlation between the results of different obesity evaluations and energy indices. Energy index can be used as a scientific basis for assessing the rationality of different evaluation methods for obesity.
