The Cause of the Deletion of Poet Zuo Wei in the Annotated Selection of Song Poetry and Something Other:Primary Notes on the Manuscripts of Qian Zhongshu

Abstract:When the Annotated Selection of Song Poetry(《宋诗选注》) was republished, poet Zuo Wei and his poems selected by Mr. Qian Zhongshu (钱锺书) in its first edition had been deleted from this book immediately because of those selected works including the contents of thief and violence, which were inappropriate at that time. But the profound reason was related with a series of important views in Qian’s conception of Song poetry. Mr. Qian Zhongshu asserted that poet Zuo Wei was able to get away from the shadow of Su Shi, Huang Tingjian and the like; that he did not imitate Du Fu neither; that he already opened the way to the poetic style well-known in the Late Tang period and made this style a transitory role in the stylistic history of Song poetry. However, Zuo Wei’s such role depended on two groups of poetical works including the contents of thief and violence.To delete these poems resulted in the deletion of the poet and the interruption of the latent chains of poetic history reflected in the Annotated Selection of Song Poetry.
