Abstract:In this paper, I made a brief review on the earthquake-related electromagnetic study in China, especially focusing on geo-electromagnetic observation and empirical prediction based on the observation data. After introducing briefly the roles of China Earthquake Administration (CEA) in seismo-electromagnetic study in China, I summarized various electromagnetic observations (e.g., apparent resistivity, geoelectric potential, geomagnetic field, electromagnetic disturbance, etc.). As the potential application, I showed the cases of the empirical prediction based on the observed electromagnetic data associated with some earthquakes in China. This paper may provide some useful information for those who want to know the general situation of seismo-electromagnetic study in China.

Abstract:The seismo-electromagnetic (EM) method is an important geophysical method that plays a major role in the observation of seismic anomalies related to earthquake precursors. It is the most promising method for a breakthrough in short-term earthquake prediction. The digital transformation and network upgrading implemented in the "Ninth five-year plan" and "Tenth five-year plan" have optimized the original observation system, improved the quality of observed data, enriched the seismic-electromagnetic information, and enhanced the analysis capability and timeliness of seismic-electromagnetic anomalies. These improvements are of major importance for the research on seismo-electromagnetics as well as for the development of new technologies. Since the beginning of the 21st century, China has launched a satellite named CSES that was designed for the generation and study of seismo-electromagnetic data and built a high-power transmitting source and a new CSELF observation network that is used specifically for earthquake monitoring. This platform has promoted the full-time three-dimensional EM monitoring and the identification of earthquake anomalies. Based on the study of anomalies related to earthquake precursors, the physical and numerical simulations, and the study on generation mechanism of anomalies in China, we summarize the characteristics of earthquake EM anomalies and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different EM observation methods. Finally, considering the related questions of the seismo-electromagnetic prediction and implementing the recent developments both in China and abroad, we review the current status of seismo-electromagnetic research and propose strategies for future research.

Abstract:The shallow seismic refraction method is one of the main methods of exploration for engineering,hydrogeological and environmental geology. According to the different geological conditions and investigation purposes in engineering geological investigation,with right application of the reasonable seismic refraction method,more obvious result of geotechnical engineering survey can be gained. This paper briefly looked back to the developing history of shallow seismic refraction method and carried on the simple introduction and comparison of various update interpretation methods. It presented some applied fields in engineering geologic investigation by the seismic refraction method.
Electromagnetic Signals Associated With Earthquakes: A Review of Observations, Data Processing, and Mechanisms in China

Abstract:There are numerous independent reports on the electromagnetic changes possibly associated with earthquakes. Such information has been adopted in some prediction test of earthquakes. But due to the complicated seismogenic process and the limited understanding of the above phenomena, there are active debates on the electromagnetic signals and their relationship with earthquakes. Thus, a physics-based study would be helpful for understanding seismic electromagnetic phenomena and strengthening their applications. In this chapter, we give a brief review of the observation, data processing, and possible mechanisms of seismic electromagnetic signals. As a potential physics-based approach, we propose an integrated research scheme, taking into account the interaction among observation, methodology, and physical model. The main approach includes the following key problems: (1) how to perform a reliable and appropriate observation with some clear physical quantities; (2) how to develop a robust methodology to reveal weak earthquake-related electromagnetic signals from noisy background; and (3) how to develop plausible physical models based on theoretical analyses and/or laboratory experiments for the explanation of the earthquake-related electromagnetic signals observed in the field conditions. This study provides some overview of the study on electromagnetic signals associated with earthquakes and stimulates the related study toward a physics-based stage.

Abstract:In the present deep-sea seismic exploration of China air-gun is used as the seismic source for emitting and a streamer of single-channel seismic system is applied for signal receiving,so that the resolution of shallow strata is low and some refined processings such as velocity analysis and coverage overlaying are difficult.To solve this problem,a deep-sea high-resolution multi-channel seismic exploring system is developed for shallow strata,which uses a high-energy plasma seismic source and a multi-channel streamer composed of 96 fiber-optic hydrophones.It has been shown from the tests of the system that by using this system the resolution of the strata can reach to 1.2 m.In addition,the system can be conveniently applied in a large water extent and can meet the requirements of ocean mineral resource investigations and deep-sea environmental surveys.

Abstract:The international conference on computation of electromagnetic fields, COMPUMAG, is one of the most important worldwide serial conferences in the area of computational electromagnetics. A survey of the 18th COMPUMAG conference held in Sydney from July 12 to 15, 2011, is given in this paper, in which the research subjects, the numbers of papers by the authors from different countries and regions are included. According to the situation of the academic exchange in the conference, the focuses and new trend in current researches of this area were analyzed, especially for the computation of industry problems and the computation in large scale. According to the information of scores, acceptance and comments for the two-page papers in the review process, a set of statistics was made. Based on the statistic data, the quantities and qualities of the papers by Chinese authors are analyzed. Besides, on the basis of the statistical data, the authors of this paper present their opinions on some inadequacies about the quality of the conference papers submitted by Chinese authors, and indicate the task that should be undertaken from now on.

Abstract:At present,by the supporting of the Monitoring and Forecasting department of China Earthquake Administration,the use of EMW(electromagnetic wave) data from observatories which set up by Langfang Dadi company,has been programmed in the "Intensified monitoring and tracing large earthquake in North China" plan,and the processing of these EMW data is moving on,especially,the deep analyzing of the EMW data from the observatories in Sichuan and neighboring area to the Wenchuan earthquake is carrying out now.Comparing of four kinds of EMW observation instruments under the guidance of the Monitoring and Forecasting department is ongoing at the Ming Tombs seismic observatory.Meanwhile,the lab of the signal analysis on seismic electromagnetic disturbances sited at the Institute of Geophysics of China Earthquake Administration is setting up,the relating analyzing software and methods of EMW data is studied in the lab,as well as to investigate the mechanism of the seismic electromagnetic wave phenomena.

Abstract:A large number of space-to-earth observation results show that there is a clear correlation between the space electromagnetic disturbances and the occurrence of earthquakes. So, the application of satellite to capture electromagnetic precursors is one of the most effective means of short-term and impending earthquake prediction, which promotes the development of electromagnetic seismic satellites. Some countries have carried out satellite observations of space electromagnetic phenomena one after another. The phenomena of space electromagnetic anomalies observed before the earthquake were reported. In recent years, the international electromagnetic seismic satellite project mainly includes: PREDVESTNIK-E, COMPASS-II, QUAKESAT, DEMETER, etc. In this paper, the current status of the international electromagnetic seismic satellites in orbit is investigated. The management mission characteristics of electromagnetic seismic satellites are analyzed and summarized. The development plan of satellite projects in the field of electromagnetic earthquake monitoring is investigated. The development trend of satellite application in earthquake disaster monitoring is prospected.

Abstract:The detection of electric fields in the environment has great importance for understanding various natural phenomena, environmental monitoring, and ensuring human safety. This review paper provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art technologies utilized for sensing electric fields in the environment, the challenges encountered, and the diverse applications of this sensing technology. The technology is divided into three categories according to the differences in the physical mechanism: the electro-optic effect-based measurement system, the MEMS-based sensor, and the newly reported quantum effect-based sensors. The principles of the underlying methods are comprehensively introduced, and the tentative applications for each type are discussed. Detailed comparisons of the three different techniques are identified and discussed with regard to the instrument, its sensitivity, and bandwidth. Additionally, the challenges faced in environmental electric field sensing, the potential solutions, and future development directions are addressed.

Abstract:The alternating electromagnetic (EM) field is one of the most sensitive physical fields related to earthquakes. There have been a number of publications reporting EM anomalies associated with earthquakes. With increasing applications and research of artificial-source extremely low frequency EM and satellite EM technologies in earthquake studies, the amount of observed data from the alternating EM method increases rapidly and exponentially, so it is imperative to develop suitable and effective methods for processing and analyzing the influx of big data. This paper presents research on the self-adaptive filter and wavelet techniques and their applications to analyzing EM data obtained from ground measurements and satellite observations, respectively. Analysis results show that the self-adaptive filter method can identify both natural- and artificial-source EM signals, and enhance the ratio between signal and noise of EM field spectra, apparent resistivity, and others. The wavelet analysis is capable of detecting possible correlation between EM anomalies and seismic events. These techniques are effective in processing and analyzing massive data obtained from EM observations.

Methods of ambient noise-based seismology and their applications

Abstract:Ambient noise-based seismology is fast expanding and has been widely applied to global and regional Earth's interior imaging, near-surface investigation, and oil and gas exploration and production. The review article briefly introduced the origins of ambient noises and traced the root and development history of ambient noise-based seismology. Based on numerous work of modeling and observation, we reviewed the effects of source distribution and station separation on Green's function retrieved for full fields and single mode surface-wave. The theoretical connection and difference between two-station correlation and spatial auto-correlation are also discussed. We then described the methods of ambient noise-based imaging, including ambient noise-based tomography, ambient noise-based eikonal tomography, and seismic interferometry or virtual source method. Finally we summarized its various but emphasizing on near-surface applications and gave an outlook for its future development.

Abstract:A lot of great achievements were made in understanding the interior earth with regard to the depth,scopeand precision during the last 20 years,which was due to the development in theories of seismic network and array,and the massive use of digital broadband seismograph in international geoscience observation programs.In this paperwe will briefly introduce the present situation and the latest trend in international geoscience observations.Besides,itpresents an abundance of data in using digital seismograph as well as its characteristics.We hope to provide some use-ful information about the new seismic network design in our country,which will strengthen monitor capability andstrengthen data quality by international standard.

A Study on the Acquisition Technology for Weak Seismic Signals from Deep Geothermal Reservoirs

Abstract:There are rich geothermal resources in China and they are widely distributed. After years of continuous exploration and production, most of the shallow geothermal resources have been explored and the current exploration mainly focuses on deep ones. Among a great many geophysical exploration methods, seismic survey is the most effective means of geothermal resource exploration and production, but its weak seismic reflection signal, low S/N ratio and poor imaging of thermal reservoirs due to the seismic geological conditions restrict the production and utilization of deep geothermal resources. It considers through the analysis of the geophysical characteristics of the thermal reservoir that the main causes for the weak seismic reflection signals from deep thermal reservoirs are (1) the shielding effect of the strong wave impedance interface between the thermal reservoir and the caprocks; (2) the small reflection coefficient inside the thermal reservoir; and (3) the serious absorption and attenuation of high-temperature fluids such as hydrothermal fluids and steam in the thermal reservoirs by seismic waves. Accordingly, a series of seismic data acquisition technologies are proposed based on the high-precision vibroseis low-frequency shooting, high-sensitivity geophones long-spread receiving and small bin size highfold technologies, and their application in the seismic acquisition of dry-hot rocks (HDR) in Gonghe Basin, Qinghai, shows a very good application effect.

Abstract:It has been nearly 110 years since the discovery of superconductors, and more than 30 years since the discovery of high temperature superconductors (HTS). Great progress has been made in the application of superconducting electronics in the last two decades. HTS microwave devices have shown much higher perfomance than the traditional ones and have found their ways to the industry applications in mobile communication, radar, and special communication applications. Owing to the ultrahigh sensitivity to magnetic fields and currents, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) have been used as the irresplacible sensors in geological surveying, magnetic resonanc imaging, biomagnetic imaging, and other areas. The sensitivity of superconducting radiation detectors such as superconducting SIS mixer, superconducting hot electron bolometer, superconducting transition edge sensor, superconducting nanowire single photon detector, and superconducting microwave kinetic inductance detector are near the quantum limitation. They are now key technology in geophysics, astrophysics, quantum information science, biomedicine, and so on. Superconducting Josephson parametric amplifier has become a key element for superconducting quantum computing. Superconducting integrated circuit has been included in the international roadmap for devices and systems, and shows that having the potential to become one of the mainstreams for post-Moore information processing technology. In metrology, superconducting Josephson effect and Josephson junction array devices have been widely used in the redefinition of quantum voltage reference and basic units of the International system of Units. Superconducting electronics plays an important role in the current quantum information technology boom, which in turn promotes the development of superconducting electronics. This review will brief introduce the research and application of superconducting electronics in China in recent years.

Abstract:In recent years,with the development of wireless sensor networks,wide attention has been paid on energy harvesting,as a renewable and eco-friendly power source.This paper mainly focuses on electromagnetic or radio-frequency (RF) energy harvesting on the foundation of the brief introduction to energy harvesting.Firstly,the basic structures and principles are introduced,with detailed analysis on the system efficiency.Then the current related work and hot fields are categorized and elaborated,in terms of the overall harvesting level,receiving antennas,rectifiers,meta-materials,and practical applications.Finally,based on the state-of-the-art,some urgent problems and future trends are discussed.

Abstract:This study presented a method of laboratory analogue experiments based on a geographical scaling model and a waveguide model to investigate the characteristics of the propagation of seismic electromagnetic signals in the crust and the atmosphere. Some controlled experiments were done to evaluate the possible influence on the experimental results from the background electromagnetic field, geographical conditions, boundary effects, the source of electromagnetic signals (position, magnitude, and frequency), and media conductivity. The reliability and the extensibility of the above analogue experimental method were also investigated. This study indicated that such kind of analogue experimental method provided an intuitionistic way of studying the propagation of seismic electromagnetic signals, which is one of the most difficult research topics in seismo-electromagnetism.
Retrospective Investigation of Geophysical Data Possibly Associated with the Ms8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan, China

Abstract:The Ms8.0 Wenchuan earthquake is one of the most catastrophic earthquakes occurred recently. Although the geophysical network around the epicentral region is not dense enough partially due to the inactivity of the Longmenshan fault, the retrospective investigation of geophysical data in and around the epicentral region would be helpful for strengthening the understanding of the seismogenic process of the Wenchuan earthquake. This paper summarized some preliminary results of the retrospective investigation, especially focusing on the seismic and electromagnetic data possibly associated with the Wenchuan earthquake and its aftershocks. The spatio-temporal investigation of the seismicity changes indicated that there is an intermediate-term seismic quiescence around the epicenter during 2006–2007. The electromagnetic data also showed some anomalous changes (including co-seismic electromagnetic changes), which may be related with the Wenchuan earthquake and its aftershocks. Although further work is definitely required to enhance the reliability of the relationship between the above geophysical changes and the seismogenic process, the above preliminary results would provide some useful information for the related study and stimulate further validation study on the precursors of the Wenchuan earthquake.

Abstract:The development of seismic wave study in China in the past four years is reviewed. The discussion is divided into several aspects, including seismic wave propagation in laterally homogeneous media, laterally heterogeneous media, anisotropic and porous media, surface wave and seismic wave inversion, and seismic wave study in prospecting and logging problems. Important projects in the current studies on seismic wave is suggested as the development of high efficient numerical methods, and applying them to the studies of excitation and propagation of seismic waves in complex media and strong ground motion, which will form a foundation for refined earthquake hazard analysis and prediction.
