Abstract:Allelophathy between the four species of marine microalgae(Chaetoceros gracilis, Chaetoceros muelleri, Nitzschia closterium and Phaeodactylum tricornutum) and Isochrysis galbana was investigated using bi-algal cultures under controlled laboratory conditions. And extracts from cell-free filtrate of Chaetoceros gracilis, Chaetoceros muelleri, Nitzschia closterium and Phaeodactylum tricornutum were finally analyzed by reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. The results demonstrated that Isochrysis galbana could markedly inhibit the growth of Chaetoceros muelleri, Nitzschia closterium and Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and marked accelerated Chaetoceros gracilis. On the other hand, the growth of Isochrysis galbana was heavily restrained by Chaetoceros gracilis, Nitzschia closterium and Phaeodactylum tricornutum, but accelerated by Chaetoceros muelleri.Allelophathy between five marine microalgae was not influenced by the change of the concentration of inorganic nutrients in cell-free filtrates. It suggested that interspecies competition existed in those marine microalgae.Furthermore, extracts of Chaetoceros gracilis, Chaetoceros muelleri, Nitzschia closterium and Phaeodactylum tricornutum inhibited the growth of Isochrysis galbana, respectively.High performance liquid chromatography showed that some different allelochemicals existed in cell-free filtrate of Chaetoceros gracilis, Chaetoceros muelleri, Nitzschia closterium and Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and 8, 5, 6 and 7 kinds were separated, respectively. This paper provides theoretical basis to deeply research the allelopathy between those microalgae.
