Abstract:The examination of forged and altered document is an important part in judicial expertise. The traditional examination methods need professional testers and devices, the disadvantages include high cost, long testing time, damage on the documents, etc. In recent years, the digital passive lossless forensics on forged and altered document has been developed which only uses scanner and computer. In this paper, we first introduce the life-cycle of document and its forging and altering methods. Then, we summarize the passive lossless forensics on forged and altered document, and describe the technologies on device identiifcation, copy paper identiifcation and authenticity detection, respectively. We give a detailed description on the characteristics introduced by devices and altering methods, and their forensics methods. Finally, we describe the questions and challenges on digital passive lossless forensics on documents.

Abstract:A new technique of scanned image restoration is proposed to save a large amount of important old documents. Firstly, by using a high definition scanner, these obsolete documents are scanned page by page to get the HD images. Secondly, different processing techniques are adopted, including removing black holes, deepening handwriting, denoising, etc., so as to make the contents of the files clearer without changing its original contents. A large number of experiments show that this method is simple and feasible. Not only can this technique protect the original version of these old files, it can also facilitate people to access these documents clearly and efficiently.

Abstract:Based on digital image technology, a graphical extraction method of concrete cracks was presented. With the help of fractal theory, there is a characteristic parameter algorithmic method of calculating area, fractal dimension, length, width of concrete cracks and using MTLAB as an application program calculating the characteristic parameters. The cracks' test analysis in concrete flat slab shows, the graphical extraction method of cracks has advantages of preciseness, convenience and quickness. The method of calculating characteristic parameter has high degree of precision. It works well of describing the irregular characteristic of concrete cracks at early stage with fractal theory which gives useful tools for quantitative study of concrete cracks.

Abstract:To solve the problem of durability deterioration of cracked concrete structures in coastal environments, this study investigates the effect of repairing loading cracks and corrosive cracks. In particular, the immediate and long-term effects of combining electrochemical repair technology with traditional repair methods were studied. After the repair, the corrosion potential of steel bars, cracking duration, and cracking speed obtained by different repair methods were compared. The results showed that the repair effect of the comprehensive repair technique is significantly better than using a single repair method. Based on the characteristics of the cracks, the sequence of each step in the combined repair technique was designed.

Abstract:To quantitatively evaluate the cracking behaviors of concrete,based on digital image technology,a new graphic method was put forward to extract concrete cracks.An algorithm was proposed and programmed with Matlab to calculate the characteristic parameters of concrete cracks,such as area,fractal dimension,length and width.The flat slab concrete cracking test showed that the new method could eliminate the misjudgment induced during threshold value selection and denoising.The graphic method for extracting concrete cracks has the advantages of high precision,convenience and quickness.The algorithm also performs very good accuracy.The analysis on fractal dimension proves that the early-age cracks of concrete have very clear fractal characters.This research provides not only an effective method to describe the irregular nature of early-age concrete cracks with fractal theory,but also a powerful tool to quantitatively analyze the properties of concrete cracks.

Abstract:Recent years have seen more network attacks on business organizations and government agencies. Advanced persistent threat (APT) attacks are one key example. Malicious PDF files are an important carrier for APT attacks, which complete the attack process by executing malicious code embedded in the file. The security vulnerabilities in PDF files and the key codes in PDF vulnerabilities (such as the ROP chain) are detected to block the propagation path of the PDF malicious code at the root to better deal with the diverse malicious PDF codes. This paper introduces the principle and analysis method for identifying PDF file format vulnerabilities. The vulnerability detection rules are defined with a PDF vulnerability detection method combined with a PDF vulnerability analysis based on rule matching. Next this paper describes the principles of the ROP method and analyzes the ROP chain detection method. Finally, this paper compares this vulnerability detection system with Symantec and BitDefender. The results show that this system more effectively detects vulnerabilities than similar products.

Abstract:The damage of concrete cover in reinforced concrete structures induced by reinforcing steel corrosion is investigated in this study. The damage process of the concrete cover can be divided into two distinct stages: the non-cracking stage and the partial cracking stage. An analytical model based on damage mechanics and elastic mechanics is developed to predict the concrete cracking due to steel corrosion. Based on this model, the expansive pressure and the radial loss of steel bar are discussed. Parametric studies are carried out to examine the effects of the correlative factors on the expansive pressure and the steel loss.

Abstract:PDF is extensively employed worldwide in the current time. A vast number of PDF are disseminated over the Internet during people's exchange of documents. The private information that is hidden in PDF document structure is revealed with documents, which causes privacy leakage. To systematically analyze and address the issues, we conduct a series of studies. We find possible sources of PDF personal privacy leaks and design a methodology to extract and recognize sensitive information automatically. Our methodology is helpful for users to check whether their PDF documents contain privacy information prior to transmission via the Internet. We conduct an experiment, and the results indicate the effectiveness of our method. We then experiment tens of thousands of benign and malicious PDF documents gathered from multiple sources around the world to analyze the current privacy leakage situation of PDF documents. Our analysis demonstrates that nearly 70% of people lack the awareness of privacy protection when employing PDF documents. We also discuss the special usage of our method in cyberattack attribution.

Robust PDF Watermarking against Print-Scan Attack

Abstract:Portable document format (PDF) files are widely used in file transmission, exchange, and circulation because of their platform independence, small size, good browsing quality, and the ability to place hyperlinks. However, their security issues are also more thorny. It is common to distribute printed PDF files to different groups and individuals after printing. However, most PDF watermarking algorithms currently cannot resist print-scan attacks, making it difficult to apply them in leak tracing of both paper and scanned versions of PDF documents. To tackle this issue, we propose an invisible digital watermarking technology based on modifying the edge pixels of text strokes to hide information in PDFs, which achieves high robustness to print-scan attacks. Moreover, it cannot be detected by human perception systems. This method focuses on the representation of text by embedding watermarks by changing the features of the text to ensure that changes in these features can be reflected in the scanned PDF after printing. We first segment each text line into two sub-blocks, then select the row of pixels with the most black pixels, and flip the edge pixels closest to this row. This method requires the participation of original PDF documents in detection. The experimental results show that all peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) values of our proposed method exceed 32 dB, which indicates satisfactory invisibility. Meanwhile, this method can extract the hidden information with 100% accuracy under the JPEG compression attack, and has high robustness against noise attacks and print-scan attacks. In the case of no attacks, the watermark can be recovered without any loss. In terms of practical applications, our method can be applied in the practical leak tracing of official paper documents after distribution.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss latest research on cloud disaster recovery systems based on an erasure code that reduces repairing bandwidth. We also discuss problems with repairing in cloud disaster recovery systems when there is storage node failure. Three models for addressing the repairing problem are proposed: exact repair, functional repair, and exact repair of systematic parts. In exact repair, the failed blocks are exactly regenerated. In functional repair, the newly generated blocks can contain data different to that of the failed node as long as the repaired system maintains the MDS code property. Exact repair of the systematic part is a hybrid repair model and lies between exact repair and functional repair.

Abstract:According to the results of physical modelling, SEM and SAM analysis of 20MnMo steel samples, internal cracks of metal parts are recoverable The motive power of the recovery is atom diffusion and migration from matrix to voids. The recovery process consists of two steps. In the first step, the void area is filled up with a kind of metal mass, beginning from the crack tip. There are many microvoids in the mass with different microstructure from the matrix. In the second step, microvoids decrease in size and number, and the mass microstructure approaches the matrix, with the heating temperature increasing and the holding time prolonging. Recovery tests on rejected heavy forgings are successfully processed. It is believed that the recovery technique is a potential method for improving the internal quality and reducing the production loss and cost of metal products. Similar method can be used to treat other metal construction parts for rescuing them or prolonging their service life. Further research and development of recovery technique have very important theoretical and practical significance.

Abstract:The cracks with a width of more than 0.3 mm can seriously affect the safety and stability of concrete structures. Presently, there are many techniques for measuring the crack depth, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. However, due to the technical limitations and different applicability of each method, their accuracy in actual crack detection is often insufficient. In this article, to improve the detection accuracy in technological applications, the mature concrete crack depth detection technologies are summarised. The currently popular non-destructive testing technologies are divided into two categories: stress wave detection technology and electromagnetic wave detection technology. The specific detection methods and development status of the two technologies are discussed. Further, based on the detection principles, the advantages and disadvantages of various detection methods are systematically compared. The application conditions of each detection method are explored, and their feasibility for different forms of cracks are comprehensively analysed. A set of optimal methods for crack depth detection is proposed. Besides, the key points for the accurate measurement of concrete crack depth are discussed.

Abstract:Crack damage is a crucial aspect of monitoring the health of concrete structures. This study introduces the concept of recessive cracks and proposes novel methods for their visualization. These methods enable the early detection and potential prevention of damage in underground concrete structures before cracks fully develop. Parameters such as infiltration time, evaporation rate, infiltration shadow width, and damage depth were measured during the visualization of recessive cracks, thereby achieving the primary objective of assessing the extent of damage caused by these cracks. Additionally, a novel algorithm, the “Similarity–Difference Algorithm,” was developed to track the development and evolution of recessive cracks at different stress stages. Furthermore, this study addresses the extraction, segmentation, and measurement of conventional cracks with spiderweb-like interlacing. Finally, outdoor experiments were conducted to validate the reliability and suitability of the proposed method for real-world applications.

Abstract:Disaster backup and recovery technology can efficiently ensure the information system to work normally when the disaster occurs,so it becomes a very important field in information security. In this paper,based on the 7 tiers of disaster recovery solutions defined by SHARE 78 of IBM,the disaster recovery system is partitioned into data level,system level and application level. According to these levels,the 9 tiers of disaster recovery solutions are redefined reasonably,and each of them is qualitatively explained and quantitatively prescribed . The disaster recovery architecture of the information system is presented,and the relation,among disaster recovery objects,backup and recovery technologies and disaster recovery plans and measures,is described in a three-dimensional model,in order to provide the whole disaster recovery framework and solution of the information system.

Abstract:Many techniques have been proposed for file recovery, but recovering fragmented files is still a challenge in digital forensics, especially when the files are damaged. This chapter focuses on JPEG files, one of the most popular photograph formats, and proposes techniques for recovering partially-damaged standalone JPEG fragments by reconstructing pseudo headers. The techniques deal with missing Huffman tables and sub-sampling factors, estimate the resolution of fragments, assess the image quality of JPEG files with incorrect quantization tables, and create quantization tables that are very close to the correct quantization tables in a reasonable amount of time. Experiments with real camera pictures demonstrate that the techniques can recover standalone fragments accurately and efficiently.

Abstract:Traditional file recovery methods rely on file system information, which are ineffective when file system information isn't available. File carving is a file recovery method that recovers files according to their structure and content without file system information, which is widely used in digital forensics. As the important carriers of digital information, multimedia files are important digital evidence. In this paper, a new multimedia file carving approach is proposed to improve the recovery accuracy of high entropy file fragments. The fragmented files can be recovered by a hierarchical carving process, including file header identification via entropy, file fragment type classification, and file reassembly via parallel unique path approach. A new file type classification method is constructed based on support vector machine, by using the features of BFD (byte frequency distribution) and ROC (rate of change). Four different datasets, such as DFRWS 2006/2007 challenge datasets, dataset simulating actual disk, dataset with randomly disordered fragments, and dataset with biomedical images, are employed in our experiments. The results show that JPEG recovery accuracy is improved greatly compared with that of Photo Rec tool. Our method performs best in the situation where the order of fragments is completely confusing.
