Abstract:The estimate of integral points in right-angled simplices has many applications in number theory, complex geometry, toric variety and tropical geometry. In [24], [25], [27], the second author and other coworkers gave a sharp upper estimate that counts the number of positive integral points in n dimensional (n >= 3) real right-angled simplices with vertices whose distance to the origin are at least n-1. A natural problem is how to form a new sharp estimate without the minimal distance assumption. In this paper, we formulate the Number Theoretic Conjecture which is a direct correspondence of the Yau Geometry conjecture. We have proved this conjecture for n = 4. This paper gives hope to prove the new conjecture in general. As an application, we give a sharp estimate of the Dickman-de Bruijn function psi (x, y) for y < 11. (C) 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract:Recently there has been tremendous interest in counting the number of integral points in n-dimensional tetrahedra with non-integral vertices due to its applications in primality testing and factoring in number theory and in singularities theory. The purpose of this note is to formulate a conjecture on sharp upper estimate of the number of integral points in n-dimensional tetrahedra with non-integral vertices. We show that this conjecture is true for low dimensional cases as well as in the case of homogeneous n-dimensional tetrahedra. We also show that the Bernoulli polynomials play a role in this counting.

Abstract:Characterization of homogeneous polynomials with isolated critical point at the origin follows from a study of complex geometry. Yau previously proposed a Numerical Characterization Conjecture. A step forward in solving this conjecture, the Granville–Lin–Yau Conjecture was formulated, with a sharp estimate that counts the number of positive integral points in n-dimensional (n⩾3) real right-angled simplices with vertices whose distances to the origin are at least n−1. The estimate was proven for n⩽6 but has a counterexample for n=7. In this project we come up with an idea of forming a New Sharp Estimate Conjecture where we need the distances of the vertices to be n. We have proved this New Sharp Estimate Conjecture for n⩽9.

Abstract:The estimate of integral points in an n-dimensional polyhedron has many applications in singularity theory, number theory and toric geometry. The third author formulated Yau Number Theoretic Conjecture which gives a sharp polynomial upper estimate on the number of positive integral points in n-dimensional (n >= 3) real right-angled simplices. The previous results on the conjecture in low dimension cases (n <= 6) have been proved by using the sharp GLY conjecture. However, it is only valid up to 6 dimension. The Yau Number Theoretic Conjecture for n = 7 has been shown with a completely new method in [22]. In this paper, on the one hand, we use similar method to prove the conjecture for n = 8 case, but with more meticulous analyses. The main method of proof is summing existing sharp upper bounds for the number of points in seven-dimensional simplex over the cross sections of eight-dimensional simplex. This is a significant progress since it sheds light on proving the Yau Number Theoretic Conjecture in general case. On the other hand, we give a new sharper estimate of the Dickman-De Bruijn function phi(x, y) for 5 <= y < 23, compared with the result obtained by Ennola [5].

Abstract:Inspired by Durfee Conjecture in singularity theory, Yau formulated the Yau number theoretic conjecture(see Conjecture 1.3) which gives a sharp polynomial upper bound of the number of positive integral points in an n-dimensional(n≥3) polyhedron. It is well known that getting the estimate of integral points in the polyhedron is equivalent to getting the estimate of the de Bruijn function ψ(x, y), which is important and has a number of applications to analytic number theory and cryptography. We prove the Yau number theoretic conjecture for n = 6. As an application, we give a sharper estimate of function ψ(x, y) for 5≤y < 17, compared with the result obtained by Ennola.

Abstract:Because of its importance in number theory and singularity theory, the problem of finding a polynomial sharp upper estimate of the number of positive integral points in an n-dimensional (n≥3) polyhedron has received attention by a lot of mathematicians. The first named author proposed the Number Theoretic Conjecture for the upper estimate. The previous results on the Number Theoretic Conjecture in low dimension cases (n<7) are proved by using the sharp GLY conjecture which is true only for low dimensional case. Thus the proof cannot be generalized to high dimension. In this paper, we offer a uniform approach to prove the Number Theoretic Conjecture for all dimensions by simply using the induction method and the Yau–Zhang [19] estimates (see Lemma 2.3, Lemma 2.4, Lemma 2.5). As a result, the Number Theoretic Conjecture is proven for n=7. An important estimate for all dimensions is also obtained (Proposition 3.1, Proposition 3.2) which will be useful to prove the general case of the Number Theoretic Conjecture. As an application, we give a sharper estimate of the Dickman–De Bruijn function ψ(x,y) for 5≤y<19, compared with the result obtained by Ennola.

Abstract:It is well known that getting an estimate of the number of integral points in right-angled simplices is equivalent to getting an estimate of the Dickman-de Bruijn function psi(x, y) which is the number of positive integers <= x and free of prime factors > y. Motivated by the Yau Geometric Conjecture, the third author formulated a number-theoretic conjecture which gives a sharp polynomial upper estimate on the number of positive integral points in n-dimensional (n >= 3) real right-angled simplices. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for n = 5. As an application, we give a sharp estimate of the Dickman-de Bruijn function psi(x, y) for 5 <= y < 13.

Abstract:Pseudo-splines of type I were introduced in [I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron, Z. Shen, Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14 (2003) 1–46] and [Selenick, Smooth wavelet tight frames with zero moments, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10 (2000) 163–181] and type II were introduced in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104]. Both types of pseudo-splines provide a rich family of refinable functions with B-splines, interpolatory refinable functions and refinable functions with orthonormal shifts as special examples. In [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], Dong and Shen gave a regularity analysis of pseudo-splines of both types. The key to regularity analysis is Proposition 3.2 in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], which also appeared in [A. Cohen, J.P. Conze, Régularité des bases d'ondelettes et mesures ergodiques, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 8 (1992) 351–365] and [I. Daubechies, Ten Lectures on Wavelets, CBMS-NSF Series in Applied Mathematics, SIAM, Philadelphia, 1992] for the case l=N−1. In this note, we will give a new insight into this proposition.

Abstract:We searched integrable 2D homogeneous polynomial potential with a polynomial first integral by using the so-called direct method of searching for first integrals. We proved that there exist no polynomial first integrals which are genuinely cubic or quartic in the momenta if the degree of homogeneous polynomial potentials is greater than 4.

Abstract:The GLY (Granville–Lin–Yau) Conjecture is a generalization of Lin, Xu and Yau's results. An important application of GLY is its use in characterizing an affine hypersurface in Cn as a cone over a nonsingular projective variety. In addition, the Rough Upper Estimate Conjecture in GLY, recently proved by Yau and Zhang, implies the Durfee Conjecture in singularity theory. This paper develops a unified approach to prove the Sharp Upper Estimate Conjecture for general n. Using this unified approach, we prove that the Sharp Upper Estimate Conjecture is true for n=4,5,6. After giving a counter-example to show that the Sharp Upper Estimate Conjecture is not true for n=7, we propose a Modified GLY Conjecture. For each fixed n, our unified approach can be used to prove this Modified GLY Conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of counting integer points in a rational polytope described by P(y) = {x ∈ ℝm: Ax= y, x ≥ 0}, where A is an n × m integer matrix and y is an n-dimensional integer vector. We study the Z transformation approach initiated in works by Brion and Vergne, Beck, and Lasserre and Zeron from the numerical analysis point of view and obtain a new algorithm on this problem. If A is nonnegative, then the number of integer points in P(y) can be computed in <math>O(poly(n,m,‖y‖∞)(‖y‖∞+1)n)</math> time and <math>O(poly(n,m,‖y‖∞))</math> space. This improves, in terms of space complexity, a naive DP algorithm with <math>O((‖y‖∞+1)n)</math>-size dynamic programming table. Our result is based on the standard error analysis of the numerical contour integration for the inverse Z transform and establishes a new type of an inclusion-exclusion formula for integer points in P(y).We apply our result to hypergraph b-matching and obtain a <math>O(poly(n,m,‖b‖∞)(‖b‖∞+1)(1−1/k)n)</math> time algorithm for counting b-matchings in a k-partite hypergraph with n vertices and m hyperedges. This result is viewed as a b-matching generalization of the classical result by Ryser for k = 2 and its multipartite extension by Björklund and Husfeldt.

Let P-(a1,P-a2,P-center dot center dot center dot,P- an) be the number of positive integral points lying in Delta(a(1), a(2),center dot center dot center dot, a(n)). In this paper we prove that n!P-(a1,P- a2,P- center dot center dot center dot,P- an) <= (a(1) - 1)(a(2) - 1) center dot center dot center dot (a(n) - 1). As a consequence we have proved the Durfee conjecture for isolated weighted homogeneous singularities: n!p(g) <= mu, where p(g) and p are the geometric genus and Milnor number of the singularity, respectively.
The Sharp Bound for the Number of Real Solutions to Polynomial Equation Systems

Abstract:This paper solves the open problem on the sharp bound for the number of isolated solutions in $\mathbf{R}_*^n$ to the real system of $n$ polynomial equations in $n$ variables, i.e., the real $n$ by $n$ fewnomial system. For an unmixed system of $n$ polynomial equations in $n$ variables, this paper shows that the number of its positive solutions in $\mathbf{R}_*^n$ is sharply bounded by that of the simplex configurations in the triangulation of its support generically. The proof is based on a homotopic argument and an inductive triangulation of the support of the system via a hierarchy of pyramid configurations of different orders. For the mixed system of $n$ polynomial equations in $n$ variables, this paper shows that the maximal number of positive solutions in $\mathbf{R}_*^n$ to the systems with the same support is a symmetric multilinear function of the support generically and hence can be computed via the polarization identity.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a polytope with rational vertices. A classical theorem of Ehrhart states that the number of lattice points in the dilations $P(n) = nP$ is a quasi-polynomial in $n$. We generalize this theorem by allowing the vertices of P(n) to be arbitrary rational functions in $n$. In this case we prove that the number of lattice points in P(n) is a quasi-polynomial for $n$ sufficiently large. Our work was motivated by a conjecture of Ehrhart on the number of solutions to parametrized linear Diophantine equations whose coefficients are polynomials in $n$, and we explain how these two problems are related.

Abstract:By using algebraic number theory method and p-adic analysis method, we find all integral points on certain elliptic curvesy(2) = (x + a)(x(2) + bx + c), a,b,c is an element of Z, b(2) < 4c.Furthermore, we can find all integer solutions of certain hyperelliptic equationsDy-2 = Ax(4) + Bx(2) + C, B-2 < 4AC.As a particular example, we give a complete solution of the equation which was proposed by Zagiery(2) = x(3) - 9x + 28by this method. In Appendix I and Appendix II, we give the computational method of finding the fundamental unit and factorizing quadratic algebraic number in the subring of a totally complex quartic field, respectively.

Abstract:This paper explores a simple yet powerful relationship between the problem of counting lattice points and the computation of Dedekind sums. We begin by constructing and proving a sharp upper estimate for the number of lattice points in tetrahedra with some irrational coordinates for the vertices. Besides providing a sharper estimate, this upper bound (Theorem 1.1) becomes an equality (i.e. gives the exact number of lattice points) in a tetrahedron where the lengths of the edges divide each other. This equality condition can then be applied to the explicit computation of the classical Dedekind sums, a topic that is the central focus in the second half of our paper. In this half of the paper, we come up with a number of interesting results related to Dedekind sums, based on our upper estimate (Theorem 1.1). Among these findings, Theorem 1.9 and Theorem 1.10 deserve special attention, for they successfully generalize two of Apostol's formulas in [T.M. Apostol, Modular Functions and Dirichlet Series in Number Theory, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1997], and also directly imply the famous Reciprocity Law of Dedekind sums.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 62, Issue 5, Page 2370-2392, October 2024. Numerical integration over the real line for analytic functions is studied. Our main focus is on the sharpness of the error bounds. We first derive two general lower estimates for the worst-case integration error, and then apply these to establish lower bounds for various quadrature rules. These bounds turn out to either be novel or improve upon existing results, leading to lower bounds that closely match upper bounds for various formulas. Specifically, for the suitably truncated trapezoidal rule, we improve upon general lower bounds on the worst-case error obtained by Sugihara [Numer. Math., 75 (1997), pp. 379–395] and provide exceptionally sharp lower bounds apart from a polynomial factor, and in particular we show that the worst-case error for the trapezoidal rule by Sugihara is not improvable by more than a polynomial factor. Additionally, our research reveals a discrepancy between the error decay of the trapezoidal rule and Sugihara's lower bound for general numerical integration rules, introducing a new open problem. Moreover, the Gauss–Hermite quadrature is proven suboptimal under the decay conditions on integrands we consider, a result not deducible from upper-bound arguments alone. Furthermore, to establish the near-optimality of the suitably scaled Gauss–Legendre and Clenshaw–Curtis quadratures, we generalize a recent result of Trefethen [SIAM Rev., 64 (2022), pp. 132–150] for the upper error bounds in terms of the decay conditions.
