Abstract:Based on the research of the layout style of temple garden,this paper discusses the Buddhism philosophies and Zen aesthetics in application on the landscaper architecture and focuses on philosophical connotation of the Huayan Sect which is contained within the temple garden,taking the Double-spring Temple as an example.It contrasts the characteristic and achievement of the Chinese temple garden and Japanese,points out that the Chinese temple garden pays attention to landscape shape overfull and is short of the apperception on artistic conception.To adopt the constructing technique of Japanese Zen Garden,design the temple garden full of Zen aesthetics and nature and man,beauty of harmony is the final aim.

Abstract:The formation and development of any architectural form and system has its own historical and cultural background. The ancient Chinese architectural system has a long history and characteristics inseparable from the historical development of Chinese traditional philosophy. Chinese philosophy, as a theory of human self-consciousness, does not give knowledge, but mainly gives ideas and ways of thinking for the needs of human self-development; At the same time, ancient Chinese architecture became a physical object reflecting the idea of traditional Chinese philosophy. Therefore, in order to explore ancient Chinese architecture, it is necessary to analyze and study it from the point of view of traditional Chinese philosophy. Like Confucius' thoughts on etiquette, the idea of the "doctrine of the middle" and the concept of hierarchical division; These ideas had a profound influence on ancient Chinese architecture, including urban planning, traditional dwellings, the environment, Lao Tzu's desire for harmony and unity between man and nature, worship of the gods, etc., as well as the theory that emerged later "Feng Shui", etc. temple space and garden architecture in the south of the Yangtze River. This article is devoted to the analysis of the influence of Confucianism and Taoism on the general principle of designing spaces of ancient Chinese architecture. The article selects some typical examples of ancient Chinese architecture for analysis. The following principles are manifested in the design of spaces of Chinese architecture under the influence of Confucianism and Taoism: moderation of living space; the principle of symmetry, balance and coordination; architectural hierarchy formed on the basis of the needs of "rituals"; integration of architecture and the environment; design of spaces according to "Feng Shui".

Abstract:It was the thousands of years of China history that gave birth to the excellent traditional ideology and culture, and in the long history the Chinese Taoism came into being and gave continuously influence and heritage. The philosophical thoughts of “let nature take its course” run through and influence all periods and fields, including the profound impact of Chinese traditional landscape closely related to nature, and the ideological pursuit of Taoist traditional culture reflected in Chinese traditional landscape. The Taoist ideological and cultural language endows the garden art with unique spiritual connotation, and the garden art endows the symbolic meaning of the essence of Taoist ideology and culture to everything, they interact with each other and develop in harmony. Therefore, this paper proposes to express spiritual culture with natural pattern in the new Chinese landscape design, explores the symbolic design expression of traditional landscape under the influence of Taoist ideology and culture, and applies it to the new Chinese landscape design to find the design ideas with spiritual connotation while inheriting the traditional ideology and culture.

Abstract:Chengzeyuan, a garden of Princess Shou'en in Qing Dynasty, is located in the western suburb of Beijing, which was translated from a private garden of an officer. The garden brings straightforwardly the Wanquan River into the scope and leads to a beautiful landscape with two long rivers traversing from west to east and dividing the whole area into different parts such as courtyards, land and island. As a noble garden with the superb style, it is dominated by a central axis. Based on the materials and survey, the evolutionary history and the characters of garden design are explored.

Abstract:Being the general way of thinking as well as a creation principle of ancient Chinese, interpretation is exerted considerable influence on traditional Chinese culture. From this perspective, this essay, with exploring into ancient philosophical and aesthetic items related, and concerning about literary elements (e.g. inscribed couplets, garden literature, etc.) reviewed the significance of the tradition of hermeneutics within ancient gardens. That is, on one hand, as a major designing method, naming scenic spots and materializing imageries by using metaphors are recreation on the basis of interpreting ancient cultural archetypes. On the other hand, the combination of literary elements and gardens formed an open structure, which could keep accepting new meanings generated by the mechanism of understanding and interpreting, as well as bringing one's aesthetic experiences to a deeper and broader level.

Abstract:The study focuses on the origins and characteristics of traditional Japanese landscape design and its features. A comparative analysis of historical Chinese and Japanese horticultural traditions is carried out, as a result of which it is proved that in both cases the basis was religious syncretism with regional characteristics. A comparative analysis of Chinese and Japanese gardens has shown how, over time, they drifted further and further from each other, the Chinese garden continued to improve its hedonistic orientation, while the Japanese garden followed the path of maximum asceticism, the aesthetics of empty space, symbolism, that is, which helped maximize concentration and self-contemplation.

Influence of Huizhou Culture on the Plant Landscapes in Huizhou-style Gardens

Abstract:Huizhou-style gardens have been greatly influenced by Huizhou culture, their plant landscapes have also been integrated with various aspects of Huizhou culture, which demonstrated the ideology, historical and cultural connotation of the society in an abstract and impalpable way. In this study, Huizhou-style miniature landscapes, plants of virtual implications, flowers or fruit trees of special connotations are taken for examples to analyze the influence of Xin’an Neo-Confucianism on plant landscapes in Huizhou-style gardens, the demonstration of Huizhou businessmen’s aesthetic tastes, as well as folk cultures of Huizhou, which implies that plant landscapes in Huizhou-style gardens are those incorporating with humanistic spirits, ornamental and practical uses. This study aims to provide references for further researches in the present situation of ancient Huizhou areas, protection of ancient Huizhou-style gardens and construction of new-style Huizhou gardens.

Abstract:As the most important Buddhist school in the history of Chinese Buddhism, the philosophy of Chan Buddhism and its agricultural Chan practice have had a profound influence on the lives of the literati and scholars. Both historically and logically, the term "Chan Dharma 禪法" is extremely rich in connotations. The so-called "agricultural Chan 農禪" is a transformation of Chinese farming culture into the "Chan practice" by practising meditation through farming activities. The "garden farming 園耕" refers to the farming activities of the literati and scholars in the gardens, which were driven by the style of agricultural Chan. Under the influence of agricultural Chan, "garden farming" took on a new spiritual attitude towards crops and created a natural aesthetic realm of life in the act of farming. This article consists of three main sections. I start with an introduction to the religious thoughts and practices of Chan Buddhism, pointing out that the underlying colour of Chan Buddhism is the aesthetics of life, while gradually evoking its special practice of Chan. The second section discusses the concept of agricultural Chan and farming activities in gardens, to figure out the characteristics of agricultural Chan and how farming activities in gardens are carried out. In the third section, I argue for the beauty of farming in gardens, pointing out the essence of the beauty in garden farming and what aesthetic possibilities the act of farming in gardens may embody.

Abstract:Despite the growing interest in Chinese gardens, there is a lack of research on Changsha Gardens. Through document retrieval, review, and map analysis, we reconstructed the Changsha Gardens during the Ming Dynasty. Our findings reveal that gardening flourished in Changsha during this period. The royal gardens, dominated by literati aesthetics, set the trend for development, while the landscaping techniques were influenced by Jiangnan Gardens. Private gardens placed more emphasis on artistic mood and cultural implications. Landscape architects incorporated towers, terraces, and suburban mountain gardening to borrow scenery. The use of spring water to create landscapes and the rectangular shapes of the water bodies reflected Neo-Confucianism and practical functions. Planting design focused on meaning over form, with landscapes used to commemorate sages and promote the farming and reading culture and other Confucian values. However, it relied too much on borrowing natural scenery and the pragmatism of the Hunan culture, which might have affected the progress of landscaping techniques and the development of Changsha Gardens. Changsha Gardens were not as skilled as Jiangnan Gardens, and the style was not as prominent as other regional schools of gardens. This might be the reason why Changsha Gardens have not become one of the regional schools of gardens in China.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the modern analysis of approaches to the image of nature in Ancient Chinese philosophy. In the research, the author focuses attention on the image of nature as an important element for research in ecological and philosophical discourses. The concept of understanding the concept of Nature in ancient Chinese philosophy is revealed. Attention is drawn to the peculiarity of Ancient Chinese philosophy as one of the oldest philosophies in the world, the specifics of its thinking and understanding of nature are revealed, which influenced the development of human civilization in general. The main question of this study is the analysis of approaches to the transcription of the image of nature in ancient Chinese philosophy and its significance for modern human civilization. By reviewing and analyzing the relevant literature, the evolution of this phenomenon is revealed.

Abstract:Xishu Gardens embodies the essence of traditional Chinese landscape design, boasting unique cultural heritage and local charm. However, research on it is often limited to the aesthetic aspects of gardens, lacking the scientific analysis of garden spaces. This paper explores Xishu Gardens through the lens of space syntax, a method commonly used for analyzing architectural features. The focus is Qingxi Garden, located within the Dujiangyan Scenic Area. It is one of the representative gardens of Xishu Gardens. Based on field investigation and spatial mapping, Qingxi Garden was digitally reconstructed for the first time followed by a detailed analysis in open-source software DepthmapX 0.8.0. This analysis involved a meticulous examination of the garden's pathways and spatial elements, integrating on-site measurements and survey data to ensure precision. By conducting a quantitative analysis of the spatial structure of Qingxi Garden, the results indicate that areas with low visible depth, as well as high road connectivity and integration, are more accessible to visitors. This accessibility serves as the central spatial node within Qingxi Garden, where a collection of bonsai is prominently exhibited. The interplay between spatial features in the landscape and architectural spaces can significantly influence tourist activities. The landscape architecture of the garden features the distinctive ventilated lattice design characteristic of West Shu gardens, providing visitors with a comfortable spatial experience. The design of Qingxi Garden not only inherits the natural design principles of West Shu gardens but also scientifically integrates the spatial layout of bonsai exhibitions. The design of Qingxi Garden draws upon the traditional garden-making techniques of the Xishu region while also respecting the natural topography of the site. It incorporates local cultural elements, such as bonsai, into its framework. The arrangement of the bonsai exhibition is executed in a scientific and rational manner. Qingxi Garden aims to achieve a harmonious integration of natural beauty and cultural aesthetics in its design, resulting in a garden landscape that is both visually appealing and rich in cultural significance. The design principles and methodologies employed offer a novel perspective for contemporary garden design.
