Abstract:Mesocosm experiments were conducted in the East China Sea(122°40.77′E, 29°21.16′N)in May 2003, through adding nutrients to red water. The results showed that the more closely the ratio of N/P approached the Redfield value, the more favorably the phytoplankton grew. If the ratio of N/P in the water was about 10~16 with no restriction of N and P, the phytoplankton would grew best, meanwhile the PN/PP ratio was consistent with the N/P ratio in the water. The maximum cell density exceeded 10 7cells/L Prorocentrum donghaiense in the experiment period. P.donghaiense was a dominant species in the East China Sea, the cell number accounting for 80% of the biomass. The test phytoplankton took nitrate as the main N source in this experiment. Owing to the storage of phosphate, the growth of phytoplankton lagged behind the absorption of phosphate.
