Abstract:Periodicals appeared in China as a product of the influence of the Western scholarship. The first Chinese magazine Cha Shi Su Mei Yue Tong Ji Zhuan (Mundane Life Monthly) was inaugurated by British clergymen in Malay in 1815 and the first literary periodicals in China are Xin Xiao Shuo (New Fiction), Xiu Xiang Xiao Shuo (Illustrated Novels), Yue Yue Xiao Shuo (Novels Monthly), and Xiao Shuo, Lin (Forest of Novels), all appearing in the late Qing Dynasty. Periodicals serve as an important platform for publication and exchange and thus have a vital impact on the diffusion and influence of academic fruits. As regards China's literary study, scholarly journals have been playing an active role in the research and academic exchange ever since the New Literature Movement, featured essentially by the importation of foreign literature. Nowadays, the development of Chinese scholarly journals still lags behind compared with the outside world. Efforts must be made in the professionalization, optimalization and internationalization of the scholarly journals.

Abstract:Loaning or not to modern new-type enterprises should not be a criterion for judging a commercial bank.According to modern financial theory,Ningbo money shops were native commercial banks after the implementation of the posting system in the 1850s.The modern short contracts of Ningbo money shops fell into a pure suppositional economic category,fairly close to modern financial investment transactions with fixed trading partners and trading places,cash settlement,complex transaction levels and networks,distinct credit transaction characteristics,short-mechanism and larger transactions,complete with open system,broker system,commission system and the last trading day system.The short contract market of modern Ningbo money shops belonged to a monetary far date,but did not develop into futures.Against the background of mid 19th century when the traditional finance transformed to a modern one,we believe that the short contracts of Modern Ningbo financial market were a great financial innovation and the first financial investment instrument in China.

Abstract:This article is the first attempt in English language scholarship to study an important genre — the comprehensive gazetteer (zongzhi 總志) — in China’s long tradition of geographical writing. Specifically, it focuses on the most efflorescent period of this genre during the late Ming, when private initiatives almost completely replaced state-sponsorship in its production. The first part of the article investigates these late Ming gazetteers’ authorship and intended audience, their relation to the printing and publishing market, and the private scholars’ motivation of engagements. The second part analyzes the spatial order that was projected in these privately produced gazetteers. As a whole, the article presents a picture in which ordinary literati of the late Ming participated in the ordering of space with unprecedented enthusiasm. In this process, they endorsed the spatial structure of the realm ordered by the administrative hierarchy, yet at the same time twisted this structure and tested its limits in many aspects.

Abstract:Medicine News, first published in 1880, was the earliest western medicine journal founded in China, playing an important role in the history of Chinese modern journals and the history of western medicine communication. Today, no original copies of this journal survive in China. Quotations, citations and comments of some newspapers and periodicals on it at the time, reveal that the publication aim of this journal was to disseminate knowledge of western medicine to the Chinese people, that its editorial policy was "showing western medicine is superior to traditional Chinese medicine" , and that its communication of western medicine knowledge was also based on this policy. Medicine News reported on an international medical academic conference held in London for the first time, and it is worth mentioning that thousands of people attended the meeting. Medicine News is known to have promoted western medicine communication in China to an advanced and more up-to-date level. At the same time, its editorial policy and strategy had a great influence on the editing and publication of western medicine journals in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.

Abstract:This paper deals with the history of first Russian newspaper in Shanghai: Russian section of «Shanghai Gazette». With a detailed analysis of this newspaper, I have succeeded in identifying five editorial staffs of the Russian section: the first SocialRevolutionary staff, the Bolshevik staff, the White Army staff, the second SocialRevolutionary staff and the Monarchic staff. The author concluded that the editorial staffs of Russian section don’t follow a policy of the Editor-in-chief Chen Youren, colleague of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. At that time the members of Kuomintang couldn’t clearly know about the political situation of Russia, and from 1918 to 1920 there were very few people in China who knew the Russian and could translate Russian articles into Chinese. This is why the Editor-in-chief Chen Youren hadn’t notice that there were a large number of anti-Bolshevik elements in his Kuomintang newspaper.

Guangzhou, as the earliest departure port of the Maritime Silk Road and an international city, has attracted more and more attention at home and abroad. News is an important tool to spread information and record the social events and keywords are often taken to be markers of aboutness to indicate the main idea of the news reports. This paper retrieves the keywords from two self-built corpora, Corpus of Guangzhou's Local Media Reports and Corpus of China's Media Reports, which cover the news reports on Guangzhou from 2010 to 2018, and then studies the collocations and semantic prosody of the keywords. The research results show that as to the similarities, the news reports from both Guangzhou's local media and China's media are becoming internationalized recently. Furthermore, they both pay close attention to the holding of Asian Games, actions given by Guangzhou's government, the incity and international development of Guangzhou. However, the coverage of news reports by Guangzhou's local media is larger than that of news reports by China's media; Guangzhou's local media mainly targets readers within the city but China's media mainly targets readers in the whole country; Guangzhou's local media stresses the connection with surrounding cities while China's media emphasizes the connection with domestic main cities. In addition, Guangzhou's local media uses a positive tone to give news reports while China's media uses a neutral one when reporting Guangzhou.

Abstract:Ningbo in the southeastern Chinese province of Zhejiang emerged as a city during the Tang dynasty (618–907), and was known at that time as Mingzhou. On the question where the administrative, political and economic center of the Ningbo region was located between 738 and 821 the various source materials either remain silent or tell very different stories. In this study I re-visit and discuss the three main theories using textual analysis combined with archaeological evidence. On the basis of textual and recent archaeological evidence this study argues that today's location of Ningbo at Sanjiangkou was the political, economic and cultural center of Eastern Zhejiang over 400 years earlier than previously thought. This clearly demonstrates the geographical and economic importance of the location at Sanjiangkou and the political stability of the region from the end of the Eastern Jin dynasty (317–420).

Abstract:Modern press was introduced into China during the movement of bringing knowledge of West to China.Through investigating three types of newspaper which are missionary newspaper,Lin Zexu's translation newspaper and Shenbao,the author tries to reveal how did the knowledge embedded in newspaper transmit to China via these different channels.Missionaries used newspaper to transmit Western knowledge,bridge the gap between East and West and introduce the modern press at the same time.Lin Zexu discovered the Western newspaper by reviewing old Chinese official gazette and unintentionally opened the window to the world and showed the basic contour of newspaper to Chinese people.By its own presence,Shenbao distinguished itself from newspaper and official gazette by showing the political power of newspaper to the nation and offering direct contact with the newspaper.All these elements of knowledge constitute the basic standard and atmosphere for Chinese to understand and adopt the idea of modern press.

Abstract:Recently there have been many viewpoints as to which private university was founded firstly in modern China. The schools, such as Fudan University (or the former Aurora Academy), Nankai University, China College, Wuchang Zhonghua University, Nanyang College and Zhengmeng Academy are all considered to be the first private university. From two keywords: “private” and “university” and based on many historical materials, this paper draws the conclusion that Nanyang College is the first private university founded by the Chinese people in modern China.

Abstract:Fanchang Kiln was the earliest Chinese bluish-white porcelain kiln. It had great significance for the research on origin of Bluish-white porcelain and white porcelain in southern China. Fanchang Kiln was discovered as early as 1950s and Archaeologists investigated and excavated it for many times. However, most of these archaeological materials hadn’t been published systematically all along. In 2002, Archaeologists excavated this site formally and acquired a lot of archaeological materials. We summarized the research progress in Fanchang Kiln about its characterization, period, property and so on. We also believed that it would be very valuable for academia to promote a further study on Fanchang Kiln.

Abstract:Shen News was the newspaper that existed for the longest time in Old China. This newspaper flew its own colors and developed its own style in the process of spreading stories and novels in late Qing Dynasty. It printed notices soliciting fiction, carried theoretical articles, and published a large number of stories and novels as well as advertisements. It opened up special fiction columns devoted to publication of stories and novels either written or translated by Chinese scholars. It distributed and presented to the subscribers stories and novels with lithographic illustrations attached to newspapers. It founded literary magazines which carried fiction. Moreover, it published many stories and novels of different types in collaboration with other publishing houses. For all these reasons, Shen News deserves profound study in terms of its great role it played in spreading fiction in late Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:In the 19th century, Canton was an important port of trade and a Chinese area touched most frequently with foreign languages. Based on an analysis on the editing and publishing of some readers of foreign languages, especially English readers of business, e.g. 'Common Conversation of Chinese and English' and 'An English Collection'etc., the article elaborates on different affection from those foreign booklets and English business readers in Canton area in the late Qing dynasty, and on their influence on cultural exchange between China and the west.

Abstract:This paper attempts to clarify Jiang Zhi Xiang first chief editor of Shen bao. in modern Chinese newspaper history based on some newly discovered materials. It is certain that his full name is Jiang QiZhang (蒋其章) , his original style name is Zi Xiang(子相) , and he was born in 1842. He passed metropolitan examinations and became a metropolitan graduate( Jin Shi,进士) in 1877. He probably left Shen bao in 1875, instead of in 1884 as many books and articles have stated. In 1879, he was appointed county magistrate of Dun Huang in Gan Su province and was on that post till 1883.
