We found that there exists a competition between the on-site interaction U and the nearest neighbor interaction V for the interaction between the electron and hole. The former serves as a repulsion force of the electron and hole for a finite-long polyene while the latter as an electron-hole atttractive interaction. The excitonic states should appear in the system with the electron-hole attractive interaction and then the optical absorption is excitonic while it is interband with an electron-hole repulsive interaction.

Abstract:Within the random phase approximation, single-exciton states in the 1D Peierlas-extended Hubbard model are investigated. Two low-lying bound-exciton states (1B(u) and 2A(g)) are found for a moderate interaction. The excitons are of an intermediate size. The electron correlation strongly affects energies of the bound-exciton states and leads to the change of the order between 1B(u) and 2A(g). The 1B(u) and 2A(g) excitons are almost degenerate for some interaction parameters. The calculated third-harmonic generation chi(THG)((3))(omega) clearly shows a three-photon resonance at 0.6 eV and a two-photon resonance at 0.9 eV observed experimentally in polyacetylene.

Abstract:Within an one-dimensional tight-binding model, we investigate the inelastic scattering processes of oppositely charged polarons in conjugated polymers under the influence of an external electric field, by using a nonadiabatic evolution method. It is found that the polaron pair does not necessarily scatter into an entity(neutral exciton), but a mixed state composed of both polarons and excitons. The yield of the neutral exciton depends sensitively on the strength of applied fields. Additionally, effects of interchain coupling on the scattering processes are also discussed, which shows that the interchain coupling is of fundamental importance and facilitates the formation of the polaron-exciton.

Abstract:The biexciton in conjugated polymers is studied in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model appended by a long-range Coulomb interaction. The wave function of the biexciton is constructed in the Heitler-London approach and, for the first time, the binding energy and radius of the biexciton in conjugated polymers is calculated.

Abstract:The effect of e-e interaction on the creation energy of soliton in polymer has been extensively studied by using the Hubbard model. However, the polymer possesses wide bandwidth, which is even larger than the on-site repulsion U, then it can't be guaranteed that the Hubbard model is always suitable, since this model originates from the systems with narrow band. Actually the Hubbard model only contains the diagonal part of e-e interaction, for wide band system, the off-diagonal part of e-e interaction may have substantial impact. This paper goes beyond the Hubbard model by using a screened Coulomb interaction, which includes both diagonal and off-diagonal parts. Our calculation shows that the effect of e-e interaction on the creation energy of soliton is distinctly different from the result based on the Hubbard model, the physical reason cause this difference is analysed.

Abstract:The controversy regarding whether the optical gap of a polymer is increased or decreased by electron-electron interactions can be clarified by studying the effect of screened Coulomb interactions on the correlation function of the excited states. Since the competition between the diagonal and the off-diagonal parts of the electron interaction depends on the screening, the screening becomes the decisive factor to determine the dependence of the optical gap on the electron interaction. Our theory shows that the electron interaction with weak or normal screening increases the optical gap. However, if the screening is very strong, the optical gap can be reduced by the electron interaction.

Abstract:By including both interchain hopping and electron-electron interaction within the context of the Takayama--Lin-Liu--Maki continuum model, and using the (nearly) degenerate perturbation method, we have studied characteristics of the interchain polaron-pair state in conjugated polymers, namely, its binding energy and the transition rate from an intrachain polaron exciton to an interchain polaron pair. It is found that the polaron-pair binding energy due to interchain Coulomb correlation is typically smaller than that due to interchain hopping. We introduce a small energy difference \ensuremath{\varepsilon} between intrachain and interchain excitations to distinguish their different lattice relaxations; we are then able to establish a two-level model, which can be solved exactly to obtain the transition probability. When \ensuremath{\varepsilon} is small enough, the solution is just a first-order degenerate perturbation result, i.e., it is proportional to a ${\mathit{t}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ binding term; when \ensuremath{\varepsilon} is large, then it becomes dependent on a (${\mathit{t}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$${)}^{2}$-binding term. In both cases, the interchain electron-correlation effect always appears in first order and is found not to influence the intrachain to interchain transition.

Abstract:Exciton and excitonic polaron states in C60 molecule are studied theoretically by the tight-binding model and the extended Hubbard interaction. We find that the exciting energies of the lowest singlet and triplet excitons depend sensitively upon the electron correlation. And the excitonic polaron is formed due to the electron-lattice coupling. Relevant experiments in photo-luminescence spectrum of C60 can be explained qualitatively by the present model with moderate interaction strength U ∼ 5.0eV, and V ∼ 2.0eV in our approximation.

Abstract:Abstract The charge-transport properties of conjugated polymers have been studied extensively for opto-electronic device applications. Some polymer semiconductors not only support the ambipolar transport of electrons and holes, but do so with comparable carrier mobilities. This opens the possibility of gaining deeper insight into the charge-transport physics of these complex materials via comparison between electron and hole dynamics while keeping other factors, such as polymer microstructure, equal. Here, we use field-induced electron spin resonance spectroscopy to compare the spin relaxation behavior of electron and hole polarons in three ambipolar conjugated polymers. Our experiments show unique relaxation regimes as a function of temperature for electrons and holes, whereby at lower temperatures electrons relax slower than holes, but at higher temperatures, in the so-called spin-shuttling regime, the trend is reversed. On the basis of theoretical simulations, we attribute this to differences in the delocalization of electron and hole wavefunctions and show that spin relaxation in the spin shuttling regimes provides a sensitive probe of the intimate coupling between charge and structural dynamics.

Abstract:In a polymer chain, an extra electron or hole will distort the chain to form a charged polaron. Under the influence of an applied electric field, the polaron will be accelerated for a short time and then move at a constant velocity while it will be dissociated for the field being stronger than a threshold. Within a dynamical non-adiabatic evolution method, we simulate the motion of polaron under the influence of the electric field which is present for different periods. (1) We find the lattice oscillation behind the polaron is a moving multi-breather excitation, which bears the incresed energy due to the electric field acting on the polaron, so that the polaron can move at a constant speed even in the presence of an electric field. (2) We present a full picture for the polaron scattering from an impurity, which may trap or repulse the charged polaron.

Abstract:We have used a Multi-Reference Determinant (MRD) Configuration Interaction (CI) approach, including double excitations within a Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian, to investigate linear polyenes containing from four to sixteen carbons. We have calculated the low-lying excited states, the two-photon absorption spectrum, and the Third Harmonic Generation response. We have analyzed the length dependence of the static third-order Susceptibility, chi(3): an indication of saturation behavior has been found. Focusing our attention on the two-photon resonance peak present in the free-electron laser THG measurements on polyacetylene, we conclude that the experimental data can be explained within a strongly correlated electron model. The Valence Effective Hamiltonian (VEH) method has been extended to calculate nonlinear optical coefficients and has been applied to investigate the static and dynamic third-order polarizabilities in poly(p-phenylene vinylene) and poly(thienylene vinylene). The relation between aromaticity and hyperpolarizability is discussed.

Abstract:We study the nature of triplet states in correlated quasi-one-dimensional bands, with emphasis on the half-filled case relevant to conducting polymers. To incorporate both electron-phonon and electron-electron interaction effects, we use a Peierls-extended Hubbard Hamiltonian, which we solve for finite systems via (numerically) exact diagonalization (Lanczös) techniques. We extend our results to polymers using both standard finite-size extrapolation techniques and a novel boundary-condition averaging scheme. First, we examine the nature of the lowest triplet state, focusing on the crossover from the free-electron picture of neutral soliton pairs to the strongly correlated limit of spin excitation. We then examine the optical absorption spectra corresponding to (allowed) triplet-triplet transitions; for this purpose it is important that our novel boundary-condition averaging method maintains sharp gap-edge features while reducing spurious rapid frequency variations produced by the finite-size approximations to the band-to-band continuum. We compare our results to data on triplet transitions in finite polyenes and discuss possible additional experimental implications, including the interpretation of recent spin-dependent photomodulation (SDPM) experiments in both trans-(CH)∋ and non-degenerate ground-state conjugated polymers.

Abstract:There appears a sharp dispute recently, one side affirms that the electron interaction suppresses the dimerization of the conducting polymers, but the other side insists the opposite opinion that the electron interaction enhances the dimerization. In order to settle this dispute, it is crucial to reexamine the description of the electron-electron interaction. Since the bandwidth of the conducting polymers is larger than the electron interaction, the electron interaction should be described by the full Coulomb interaction with certain screening rather than the Hubbard model. Based on the full interaction, we obtain the dependences of the dimerization on the interaction strength U0 and the screening factor β of the electron interaction. Our results clarify the above dispute in this way: There exists a critical length ΔC for the interaction range Δ = aβ (a is the lattice constant), Δ>ΔC, the dlmerlzation Is enhanced by the electron interaction. Δ<ΔC, the dimerization will be reduced by the electron interaction. The critical length ΔC is of the order of the lattice constant. When the bandwidth increases, ΔC will become longer.

Abstract:Within a tight-binding electron-phonon interacting model, we investigate the dynamics of photoexcitations to address the generation mechanism of charged polarons in conjugated polymers by using a nonadiabatic evolution method. Besides the neutral polaron exciton which is well known, we identify a novel product of lattice dynamic relaxation from the photoexcited states in a few hundreds of femtoseconds, which is a mixed state composed of both charged polarons and neutral excitons. Our results show that the charged polarons are generated directly with a yield of about 25%, which is independent of the excitation energies, in good agreement with results from experiments. Effects of the conjugation length are also discussed.

Abstract:The electron-electron interactions and the creation energy of a soliton in highly conducting polymers were calculated by using a correlated-basis-function method with a general screening Coulomb potential within the Kronig-Penny-model framework. Our results showed that even when the electron-electron interactions are considered, solitons are still the main charge carriers. The strong long-range electron-electron interaction is seen to reduce the creation energy of a soliton. A comparison with results based on the Hubbard model has been made. The limitations of the Hubbard model in this application were discussed.

Abstract:Nearly 25 years after the discovery that an organic conjugated polymer can be “doped” (that is, in chemical terminology, oxidized or reduced) to metallic-like electrical conductivity, the field of π-conjugated oligomers and polymers has enjoyed a tremendous development, most remarkably underlined by the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Alan Heeger, Alan MacDiarmid, and Hideki Shirakawa. Since, in this specific class of polymers, small variations in chemical structure play an essential role and the properties of interest directly depend on the electronic structure, quantum–chemical approaches, that take the chemical nature fully into account, have provided a most valuable input to the field. The results have helped to forge a fundamental understanding of the electronic and optical properties of π-conjugated materials and in guiding the experimental efforts toward novel compounds with enhanced characteristics. It is our main purpose in this contribution to illustrate the impact of quantum–chemical methods, more specifically in relation to transport processes. We do not dwell at all on the theoretical methodologies that have been designed, but rather on the concepts. We first recall the basic electronic-structure aspects of π-conjugated systems, that make their chemistry and physics so rich and fascinating. We then discuss the key role of interchain interactions and their impact on transport.
Effect of Electron-Electron Interactions on the Charge Carrier Transitions in Trans-Polyacetylene

Abstract:By employing a newly developed nonadiabatic dynamical simulation method, which is a combination of classical molecular dynamics and the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we investigate the dynamics of charge carrier transitions in trans-polyacetylene (PA) with the inclusion of both electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions. The calculations are performed within a modified Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in which electron-electron interactions are taken into account via the combination with extended Hubbard model (EHM). We find that removing an electron from a trans-PA chain bearing a positively charged polaron leads to the formation of a pair of charged solitons. Furthermore, we study the effect of electron-electron interactions on such charge carrier transitions in trans-PA. Our results show that increasing the on-site Coulomb interaction and the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion will not change the qualitative behavior of the transition from a polaron to a soliton pair in the evolution process but will quantitatively reduce the moving velocities of the both formed solitons significantly and change the conditions for the soliton collisions.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers came to an unprecedented epoch that the charge transport is limited only by small disorder within aggregated domains. Accurate evaluation of transport performance is thus vital to optimizing further molecule design. Yet, the routine method by means of the conventional field-effect transistors may not satisfy such a requirement. Here, it is shown that the extrinsic effects of Schottky barrier, access transport through semiconductor bulk, and concurrent ambipolar conduction seriously influence transport analysis. The planar transistors incorporating ohmic contacts free of access and ambipolar conduction afford an ideal access to charge transport. It is found, however, that only the planar transistors operating in low-field regime are reliable to explore the inherent transport properties due to the energetic disorder lowering by the lateral field induced by high drain voltage. This work opens up a robust approach to comprehend the delicate charge transport in conjugated polymers so as to develop high-performance semiconducting polymers for promising plastic electronics.
