Abstract:Materials treated by low temperature plasma can obtain permanent surface modifications such as raising the properties of adhesion, wettability, adsorption, conductivity, biocompatibility etc. The occurrence , reaction mechanism , applications in chemical industry and future prospect of low temperature plasma are introduced. Abstract:In this paper, low-temperature oxygen plasma method was used to modify the surface of PP (polypropylene) microporous membranes, The influence of oxygen plasma on the chemical structure and physical performance of the membrane was investigated with SEM, XPS and IR spectra, The results of XPS and IR showed that polar groups, -OH, -COOH, C = O were created on these membrane surfaces. The groups -OH and -COOH were useful for activation and grafting process for affinity membrane with Cu2+ as a metal-chelating ligand, The influence of plasma treatment condition on the adsorbability of affinity membrane for lysozyme was carried out. The optimal adsorbability of lysozyme was 8 mu g/cm(2) on the affinity membrane prepared for 20 min and under 68 W plasma condition.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials, metal oxides and metal nanoparticles have been widely used in propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics. Cold plasma technique has been developed for material fabrication and modification at temperatures lower than 200 ⁰C. Due to the low temperatures, cold plasma can efficiently modify material surface properties, and simultaneously maintain material structures well, especially for temperature-sensitive materials. Cold plasma applies gas, e.g. Ar, N2, O2, H2 and air, as working gas, without any harmful substance like acid, alkali and organic solvent. Moreover, material surface properties can be efficiently tuned by simply changing plasma properties, e.g. power, time and working gas. The present review discusses recent progresses in using cold plasma to fabricate carbon-based materials, metal oxides and metal nanoparticles, and to modify surface properties of carbon-based materials, metal oxides and metal nanoparticles. Future research opportunities and challenges are also proposed. It is believed that the present review will stimulate more studies on material fabrication and modification by cold plasma, and help to construct more efficient materials for propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics.

Abstract:Bio-effects of non-thermal plasma include lethality of microorganisms and stimulation of mammalian cells,which brings up a series of techniques in disinfection and clinical medicine.In this paper,the applications of non-thermal plasma in medical device sterilization,water and air cleaning,as well as food and package treatment are reviewed.Commercialized plasma sterilizer for medical devices can be classified into vacuum and atmospheric pressure,the volume of the former is much larger while the latter is more simple and easy to operate.For disinfection of water,air and food,it is not yet commercialized due to its energy consumption,efficiency or chemical residues.In the last decade,the developed plasma sources and techniques for medicine are successfully applied to treatment of decayed tooth,skin,wound,and cancer,with some of them approved for clinical practice.In the future,the research focus will be identifying the interactions between plasmas and cells,and developing more effective and practical equipment for different applications.

Abstract:This article simply introduces the properties and applications of several high performance organic fibers and describes studies on the surface modification of these fibers by using the low-temperature plasma technology.It's shown that plasma treatment well modifies the properties of fiber surface by physical etching and chemical modification.It can not only roughen the surface of the fibers,but also implant some active polar groups on the fiber surface,reducing the surface energy,both causing the enhancement of the adhesion between the fibers and the polymer matrix;Meanwhile,it is a simple process without any pollution,so it's an effective and environmentally friendly way to modify fiber surfaces,especially to the high performance organic fibers.

Abstract:Non-thermal plasma is able to induce the production of highly active species such as hydroxyl radical (OH·), hydroperoxyl radical (HO2·), superoxide anion radical (O2-·), and atomic oxygen radical anion (O-), and it has a distinctive effect on degrading and modifying biopolymers. The generation and properties of low temperature plasma are described in this review. This article also reviews recent progress in the application of low temperature plasma in the degradation and modification of biopolymers. In addition, the mechanisms of degradation and modification of polysaccharides, proteins and other polymers by low temperature plasma are also summarized.

Abstract:Widely applied in many fields such as national defence, industry, agriculture and daily life, the amphiphobic properties(hydrophobicity and oleophobicity)of polymer surface have attained great concerns. This paper summarized in detail about the principles and experimental researches in reducing surface energy and altering surface roughness as well as elucidated that low-temperature fluoric plasma processing technology is an effectual way in improving the amphiphobic properties through increasing the roughness of materials' surface based on decreasing the surface energy. In the end, we put forward that some areas of amphiphobic theory should be made further efforts, and also gave prospect that the low temperature plasma technique will exert a significant influence on the selfindustrialization of the fabric surface amphiphobie modification and other applications according to the development of plasma science and technology at home and abroad.

Abstract:The article discusses the surface modification of cotton and polyester fabric with low-temperature plasma, surveys the changes and compares the modified degree of their wettability. The effect of treatment time on the surface modification and its ageing were studied through the measurements of capillary effect. It is shown from the experimental results that the wicking effect is increased and the surface energy is improved significantly after the atmosphere low-temperature, oxygen low-temperature, nitrogen low-temperature, Ar low-temperature treatment. The more the treat time is, the greater the wettability is enhanced, and the increasing tendency would be weak while them have been treated over 4 min. But those good properties will partly decay with the delay of lay-aside time, and the wicking effect would be various while the working atmosphere is changed.

Abstract:Materials with high hardness, strength or plasticity have been widely used in the fields of aviation, aerospace, and military, among others. However, the poor machinability of these materials leads to large cutting forces, high cutting temperatures, serious tool wear, and chip adhesion, which affect machining quality. Low-temperature plasma contains a variety of active particles and can effectively adjust material properties, including hardness, strength, ductility, and wettability, significantly improving material machinability. In this paper, we first discuss the mechanisms and applications of low-temperature plasma-assisted machining. After introducing the characteristics, classifications, and action mechanisms of the low-temperature plasma, we describe the effects of the low-temperature plasma on different machining processes of various difficult-to-cut materials. The low-temperature plasma can be classified as hot plasma and cold plasma according to the different equilibrium states. Hot plasma improves material machinability via the thermal softening effect induced by the high temperature, whereas the main mechanisms of the cold plasma can be summarized as chemical reactions to reduce material hardness, the hydrophilization effect to improve surface wettability, and the Rehbinder effect to promote fracture. In addition, hybrid machining methods combining the merits of the low-temperature plasma and other energy fields like ultrasonic vibration, liquid nitrogen, and minimum quantity lubrication are also described and analyzed. Finally, the promising development trends of low-temperature plasma-assisted machining are presented, which include more precise control of the heat-affected zone in hot plasma-assisted machining, cold plasma-assisted polishing of metal materials, and further investigations on the reaction mechanisms between the cold plasma and other materials.

Abstract:Surface modification of ultrafine ceramic powders will prevent the agglomeration and improve the dispersion of powders in organic medium. Plasma polymerization is a solvent-free, room temperature process that can be used to rapidly deposit thin polymer film onto a wide variety of substrates. In this paper, different kinds of polymer films with the sizes of several nanometers were coated on the surface of ultrafine ZrO2 powders by the way of low temperature plasma polymerization. The encapsulation was confirmed by TEM, TGA, and DRIFT. The dispersion of plasma treated ZrO2 powders in organic medium was improved compared with untreated ZrO2 powders.
