Abstract:As the country with the largest anthropogenic CO2 emission, China is greatly influential on fighting with climate change. However, CO2 emitted from on-road vehicles in China is a barrier to its carbon neutral due to the inevitable increase trend of vehicle quantity. Thus, to meet the requirement of refined policy-making for vehicular CO2 abatement, we calculated the CO2 emissions from 37 vehicular types and 3 fuel categories across 339 cities in China through the bottom-up method, and developed a national vehicular CO2 emission inventory in a high spatial resolution (1 km x 1 km). Additionally, machine learnings were conducted to the inventory for the emission pattern identification. It was found that the total vehicular CO2 emission in 2019 was 1090 million tons, and 77.1% of CO2 was emitted by vehicles of light-duty gasoline vehicle (LDGV) and heavy-duty diesel truck (HDDT). In addition, for the grids accompanying CO2 emissions, 75% of vehicular CO2 emissions were contributed by 15% of grids (hot grids). Furthermore, results of machine learning showed that LDGVs mainly distributed in economically advanced regions of which vehicular structures were relatively simple, while HDDTs were widely applied on the national scale. Based on the results above, two measures were proposed: (1) Electric cars have to be strongly promoted in hot grids for the LDGV replacement. (2) Long-distance freight tool replacements are urgently required in the national wide. Our study provided a studying base for further investigations on decarbonization and a new insight of China's vehicular CO2 emission controls.

Abstract:Abstract. This study is the first in a series of papers that aim to develop high-resolution emission databases for different anthropogenic sources in China. Here we focus on on-road transportation. Because of the increasing impact of on-road transportation on regional air quality, developing an accurate and high-resolution vehicle emission inventory is important for both the research community and air quality management. This work proposes a new inventory methodology to improve the spatial and temporal accuracy and resolution of vehicle emissions in China. We calculate, for the first time, the monthly vehicle emissions (CO, NMHC, NOx, and PM2.5) for 2008 in 2364 counties (an administrative unit one level lower than city) by developing a set of approaches to estimate vehicle stock and monthly emission factors at county-level, and technology distribution at provincial level. We then introduce allocation weights for the vehicle kilometers traveled to assign the county-level emissions onto 0.05° × 0.05° grids based on the China Digital Road-network Map (CDRM). The new methodology overcomes the common shortcomings of previous inventory methods, including neglecting the geographical differences between key parameters and using surrogates that are weakly related to vehicle activities to allocate vehicle emissions. The new method has great advantages over previous methods in depicting the spatial distribution characteristics of vehicle activities and emissions. This work provides a better understanding of the spatial representation of vehicle emissions in China and can benefit both air quality modeling and management with improved spatial accuracy.

Abstract:This paper is focused on the review of the development and application for automotive energy Life-cycle Analysis(LCA) models. A summary on the studies of multi-pathway comprehensive analysis and individualized studies of automotive LCA models in China is also made, which gives out some key results. There are obviously regional differences in international research on LCA including the development of models while only several pathways have been researched without any LCA models specified for Chinese condition. In addition, research on such key issues as allocation methods of co-products, switching on power fuel and diversity of vehicle manufacturing cycle needs more reinforcement. Finally, the future research on life-cycle analysis of automotive energy consumption and GHG emissions is indicated.

Abstract:Electric vehicles (EVs) offer the potential for substantial reductions in energy consumption and emissions during the vehicle traveling stage. In considering these benefits, it is important to address concerns of environmental problem-shifting. In addition, while praise has focused on the use phase in comparing transportation options, the power source production is also significant when comparing conventional and EVs. This study develops and provides a life cycle inventory of EVs and applies the inventory to assess the fuel cycle energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of the EVs and the internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). The results show that EVs powered by the present China electricity mix offer a 48% decrease in energy use and a 38% decrease in global warming potential (GWP) relative to conventional gasoline vehicles.
Estimation of China's Embodied CO2 Emissions During 2000–2009

Abstract:The problem of CO2 embodied in international trade has attracted increasing attention in China. To analyze this issue, the present paper directly calculates emission factors for 15 industries in 2002, 2005 and 2007. We then examine a consumption-based system and a single-region inputoutput model to estimate China's embodied emissions during 20002009. Our results show that, when a consumption-based system is adopted, China's emissions are lower than those reported by some international organizations. The rapid growth in China's exports is a key determinant of China's rising total emissions. All countries should strengthen their cooperation in improving their current greenhouse gas inventories. Furthermore, China needs to encourage trade in low-carbon products and technology.

Abstract:To reduce greenhouse gas emissions from passenger vehicles, new energy vehicles are actively promoted by China's government. Various power system types are being developed and their sales keep increasing. However, there is uncertainty about the greenhouse gas emission of different vehicle types. This paper studies the life cycle carbon emissions of passenger vehicles in China. A calculation model is established with consideration of all types of power systems, model classes, and electric driving ranges. In order to calculate and compare the effect of carbon emission reduction on all types of vehicles, a sensitivity analysis is conducted in two ways to study three of the main influencing factors. The results show the carbon emission-reducing effect of different factors on different stages in the life cycle. It is known that different influencing factors have different effects on these stages. Since there is a variation in different vehicle types, the carbon reduction effect caused by these factors is different for these vehicle types. This paper describes a sensitivity analysis of three main influencing factors and puts forward relevant policy recommendations to reduce the carbon emissions of passenger cars during their life cycle based on these results. It is necessary to take the vehicle life cycle as a whole for carbon emission management. The conclusions of this paper can be used for vehicle manufacturers to decide the focus of technology research, and also have important reference significance for enterprises when making life cycle carbon reduction strategies for their products. It is also of certain value for China to formulate a medium- and long-term carbon emission reduction strategy for the passenger car industry.

Abstract:Driven by the target of carbon neutrality, the vehicle industry is striving to implement energy conservation and emission reduction (ECER). Aluminum (Al) alloy, which is an effective ECER solution, is the dominant lightweight material for vehicles. Nearly 60% of vehicle Al components are produced by die casting (DC), which can achieve a 30-50% weight reduction. However, Al DC is highly energy intensive and environmentally polluting. It is necessary to assess the life cycle ECER effects of vehicle Al die castings (DCs). However, the existing research weakly supports this assessment, particularly in the manufacturing stage. In addition, the effective implementation of ECER for Al DC is crucial but lacks attractive measures. To bridge these gaps, a system boundary is first defined, including three scenarios: high-pressure DC, high-vacuum DC, and semi-solid DC. A detailed process division and data description are introduced. Then, a thorough inventory analysis is conducted with an in-depth investigation and on-site data collection. Finally, a more representative and configurable inventory compared to existing studies and life cycle assessment databases is provided. It is revealed that the energy consumption in the manufacture of structural DCs is nearly 80% larger than that of box-type DCs. High-vacuum DC and semi-solid DC can reduce the total energy by 3.5% and 9.9%, respectively. Several targeted ECER measures are proposed with intensive analyses and surveys. In addition, the sensitivity of specific Al DCs to the developed inventory is discussed, as are the suggested measures considering energy generation.
Development and application of life-cycle energy consumption and carbon footprint analysis model for passenger vehicles in China

Abstract:China has become the global largest electric vehicle (EV) market, making the energy and climate issues of EV industry in terms of life cycle attract widespread attention. Based on the self-designed life-cycle analysis tool and up-to-date database, this study analyzes energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a typical passenger internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV), and battery EV (BEV) and plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) installed with different lithium-ion battery types, covering both fuel cycle and vehicle cycle. Owing to the battery installation, which shares nearly 30% of the GHG emissions in EV's vehicle cycle, the BEV and PHEV emit 13533–15445 kgCO 2 ,eq/vehicle and 11572–12186 kgCO 2 ,eq/vehicle, 65.6%–89.0% and 41.6%–49.1% higher than that of the ICEV, respectively. EV's fuel-cycle low emissions offset its surplus emissions in vehicle cycle. The EV generates 219.8–230.9 gCO 2 ,eq/km in life cycle, achieving 18.3%–22.6% of reduction compared to the ICEV. Development of non-fossil power will highlight the advantages of EVs in energy conservation and GHG emission reduction, e.g. if the proportion of coal power decreased to 10%, BEV's life-cycle GHG emissions will reduce about 70% than current level. Policies should focus on both EVs development acceleration and the low-carbon automotive and battery industry creation.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of vehicle population and electronic control components used in automotives in China, the energy consumption and environmental emissions of automotive electronic control components in 2007 are calculated by adopting the EIO-LCA model. The calculation results indicate that automotive electronic control components consume 20306000 tons of standard coal equivalent (SCE), which is a large consumption of energy, and make a lot of toxic environmental emissions. However, in China, after the automotives are scrapped, the automotive electronic components are either discarded carelessly or smashed into pieces along with the vehicles for material recycling. This unreasonable treatment of these components can result in great damage to the environment and resource wastage. Therefore, in this study, the automotive electronic control components recycling strategy and a technology roadmap in accordance with China’s actual conditions are provided for energy conservation and toxic environmental emissions reduction.

Abstract:To project vehicle emission inventories more accurately in China, dynamic vehicle emission factors have been developed considering several factors such as regulated emission limits, regulated fuel economy, vehicle deterioration of emission factors, and fuel economy deterioration. This study has also developed a method to estimate fuel economy based on fuel economy claimed by manufacturers, a ratio of real road fuel economy on road/fuel economy claimed by manufacturers, vehicle deterioration rate, vehicle stocks, and fuel economy regulation in China. The emission inventories of CO, VOCs, NOx, PM10, and CO2 from vehicle fleets in Hangzhou, China during 2004–2030 are projected using above two methods. The projected results show that regulated vehicle emission limits of National I and II standard of China are not effective to reduce the emission factors of vehicles except motorcycles, and only National III and National IV of Vehicles Emission Limits can apparently reduce overall emission factors of all type vehicles with both gasoline and diesel. The results also show that emission factors will continue to decrease after 2010. Up to 2030, the total emission inventories of CO, VOCs, NOx, and PM10 will increase by 467.52%, 61.44%, 8.31%, and 78.35%, respectively. However, emission inventory of CO2 will grow continuously to 2030 with 770.54% growth rate.

Abstract:For studying the effect of vehicle on environment in its whole life span,the emission produced in the three stages(manufacturing,use and recycling) of vehicle life is analyzed and calculated by life cycle assessment.The effects of different fuels(90# lead-free gasoline,LPG,LNG and gasohol) on environment are also compared.The results show that certain pollutions are produced and have some effects on environment in all three phases of vehicle life,and using LPG and gasohol as fuel for vehicles as much as possible and recycling of discarded vehicle are all beneficial.

Abstract:Amidst increasingly stringent global emission regulations, China's energy mix is undergoing profound transformation. To more precisely evaluate vehicle emissions, this study aimed to explore the dynamic responses on life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of passenger cars in China, considering the change of energy mix. An energy mix-driven life cycle assessment model was established and inventory data were obtained. The electricity generation mix data in China were predicted, and the results in life cycle GHG emissions of internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV), battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) from 2020 to 2050 were analyzed. Uncertainty, sensitivity and breakeven distance analyses were performed to explore the impact of various parameters. The results showed that the average emission factor of electricity generation mix is projected to decrease by 87.11% in 2050 with the cleanliness of energy mix. The life cycle GHG emissions of ICEV, BEV and PHEV produced in 2020 were 37.16, 28.04 and 29.84 tCO2eq respectively. Based on the linear models, it is expected that the emissions from these vehicles produced in 2050 would be reduced by 11.48%, 61.31%, and 53.39% respectively compared to their levels in 2020. Policies and measures for emission reduction were proposed based on the sensitive parameters and calculation results.

Abstract:Recently, China has implemented many policy measures to control the oil demand of on-road vehicles. In 2010, China started to report the fuel consumption rates of light-duty vehicles tested in laboratory and to require new vehicles to show the rates on window labels. In this study, we examined the differences between the test and real-world fuel consumption of Chinese passenger cars by using the data reported by real-world drivers on the internet voluntarily. The sales-weighted average fuel consumption of new cars in China in 2009 was 7.80L/100km in laboratory and 9.02L/100km in real-world, representing a difference of 15.5%. For the 153 individual car models examined, the real-world fuel consumption rates were −8 to 60% different from the test values. The simulation results of the International Vehicle Emission model show that the real-world driving cycles in 22 selected Chinese cities could result in −8 to 34% of changes in fuel consumption compared to the laboratory driving cycle. Further government effort on fuel consumption estimates adjustment, local driving cycle development, and real-world data accumulation through communication with the public is needed to improve the accuracy of the labeling policy.
Life cycle environmental assessment of electric and internal combustion engine vehicles in China

Abstract:Promoting electric vehicles (EVs) is an important measure to ensure energy security, improve air quality, and mitigate global climate change. However, the emission reduction impacts of EVs in China have been widely debated and the conclusions of existing studies are still controversial. In this study, we adopted the life cycle assessment (LCA) method to evaluate the carbon dioxide (CO2) and air pollutant emissions from the stage of vehicle production, vehicle use and vehicle end-of-life. We further compared the emissions of three types of passenger vehicles in China, including internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and battery electric vehicle (BEV). Compared with ICEV, BEV and PHEV were found to reduce the emissions of CO2, VOCs, and NOX, but increase the emissions of PM2.5 and SO2. These differences were primarily caused by EV’s high fuel efficiency and high fuel consumption of ICEV. Additional findings indicate that the emissions of PM2.5 and SO2 of BEV were 2.6 and 2.1 times that of ICEV, respectively; and the emissions of PM2.5 and SO2 of PHEV were 1.8 and 1.5 times that of ICEV, respectively. Moreover, we found the emissions of PM2.5 and SO2 of EV will be higher than that of ICEV in high renewable energy scenario with higher biomass share if keeping the emission factor of electricity constant.

Abstract:The lack of a domestic life cycle assessment (LCA) database is recognized as the primary obstacle to the wide practice of LCA in China. In this paper,a four-step method toward the so-called Chinese reference life cycle database (CLCD) is proposed,including selection of life cycle impact categories and substance nomenclature,collection of inventory data sets for unit processes,development of life cycle inventory data sets,and development of CLCD database. Following this method,an expandable life cycle model of the fundamental industries in China was established,including fundamental products such as electricity,coal,fossil fuel and transportation. National averages inventory data of the unit processes were collected and life cycle inventory data were derived from the model,which constitute the CLCD Basic. The method and the model will provide a basis for further development of a more comprehensive CLCD database.

Abstract:For large-scale applications of electric vehicles have an uncertain impact on energy consumption and the environment,this paper analyzed energy consumption and emissions in the fuel life cycle (WTW) of four different types of buses operated by Beijing Public Transportation Group.The four different types of buses include pure electric buses,hybrid buses,diesel buses and CNG buses.The paper established a life cycle evaluation model based on energy conservation of materials,and conducted an in-depth study on fossil energy consumption,CO2 emissions,CO emissions,NOX emissions,SO2 emissions,and PM2.5 emissions.This paper built a calculation model of energy prices,emission treatment cost and vehicle acquisition cost,and completed technical and economic evaluation of buses with different drives based on Gray System Theory.

Abstract:China’s automotive industry has been dedicated to a series of carbon-reduction efforts and has strived for comprehensive green and low-carbon transformation in order to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. On the basis of automobiles’ whole life-cycle (WLC) carbon emission accounting, this paper calculates life-cycle carbon emissions per vehicle, proposes green and low-carbon development path for China’s automotive industry, quantifies and analyzes implicated carbon-reduction potential, and puts forth suggestions for high-quality green and low-carbon development of China’s automotive industry. The first is to establish a sound standard and data management system; the second is to promote research, development and application of low-carbon materials and low-carbon technologies; the third is to accelerate the pace of fostering a new consumption model in the automotive industry. The research results can further support national policy-making regarding carbon emissions, promote corporations’ research, development and application of low-carbon technologies, encourage green and low-carbon consumption, and lead the automotive industry to achieve WLC neutrality.
Comparative environmental impacts of Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles with Hybrid Vehicles and Electric Vehicles in China—Based on Life Cycle Assessment

Abstract:In China, the growth of new energy vehicles is especially rapid and the explosive growth of the automobile brought an increasing impact on the environment. This paper selected Electric Vehicles, Hybrid Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles of the same model of BYD as the object. We established a Life Cycle Assessment with GaBi6 software and CML2001 model. The results show that in the whole life cycle, the influences of ADP, GWP and ODP of Electric Vehicles are less than that of Hybrid Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles. The impact of Electric Vehicles are 39%, 50%, and 4% of the Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles and the Hybrid Vehicles’ impact are 65%, 78% and 85% of the Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles. Electric Vehicles and Hybrid Vehicles have a clear improvement in these three types of impacts. The comparison results of AP, EP, FAETP, MAETP and POCP show that the potential impact of Electric Vehicles is greater than that of Hybrid Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles. At present, improving production technology and reducing the consumption of energy during production phase are effective measures to reduce the environmental impact of Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles and Hybrid Vehicles of China.

Abstract:As a means of transportation, automobiles produce large carbon emissions. On the basis of analyzing the carbon emissions of automobile transportation in 2021, the ownership model, new car sales structure model and carbon emissions analysis model are constructed, and the carbon emissions of automobiles under the baseline scenario and dual carbon scenario in 2022-2060 are predicted. For dual carbon, the main technology path of automobile can be divided into four parts: popularizing new energy vehicles, energy-saving fuel vehicles, green transportation and zero-carbon fuels.

Abstract:The accurate and reliable process unit data is the most important bases for the life cycle inventory (LCI) and impact assessment of products. Up to now, the related studies, due to the difficulties of data acquisition, mainly have been focused on the products with simple structure or chemical composition. The LCI studies conducted, based on the related databases, are difficult to meet the requirement for comparative assessment or commercial purposes. In this paper, taking a car for example, the acquisition method of process unit data during manufacture stage for LCI was systematically investigated and proposed. A set of tables for data survey and gathering was designed and proposed through theoretical studies, field tests and further improving, which can be used for LCI of vehicles and other similar products with complex structure.
