Abstract:Laser ablation of transition metal targets with concurrent 11 K deposition of CO2/CO/Ar mixtures produces CO2− anion absorption at 1657.0 cm−1 and two additional metal independent absorptions at 1793.7 and 1701.7 cm−1. Isotopic substitution shows that the 1793.7 cm−1 band is due to a C–O stretching vibration and the 1701.7 cm−1 band an antisymmetric CO2 vibration. The UV photolysis and CCl4 doping experiments strongly suggest an anion identification. Based on density functional theory and ab initio calculations of structure and vibrational frequencies, these two bands are assigned to the C–O and antisymmetric CO2 stretching vibrations of the C2O3− anion coordinated between two C atoms with nonplanar Cs symmetry. Our calculations also show that the C2O3− anion is a covalently bound molecule.

Abstract:Reactions of laser-ablated cobalt atoms with CO and NO mixtures in excess argon during condensation at 7 K generate a series of unsaturated cobalt carbonyl nitrosyls including Co(CO)(NO), Co(CO)[NO], OCo-(NCO), CO(CO)(2)(NO), Co(CO)(2)[NO], and Co(CO)(NO)(2), and the saturated Co(CO)(3)(NO) molecule. The observed infrared bands of reaction products are identified by isotopic substitution, isotopic ratios, and isotopic distributions ((CO)-C-13,(NO)-N-15,(NO)-N-15-O-18, and mixtures). DFT/BPW91 vibrational fundamental calculations reproduced the observed frequencies and isotopic shifts very well. The isocyanate OCo(NCO) is formed from the side-bonded Co[NO] reaction with CO, which is relevant to catalytic reduction processes.

Abstract:Laser ablation of transition metal targets with concurrent 11 to 12 K condensation of CO2-Ar mixtures produces a sharp metal independent infrared absorption at 1657.0 cm(-1) due to CO2-, which is formed from the capture of ablated electrons by CO2 molecules during the condensation process. Two additional metal independent absorptions are produced at 1856.7 and 1184.7 cm(-1 )on matrix annealing to 25 K to allow diffusion and reaction of CO2 and CO2-. Isotopic substitution ((CO2)-C-13, (CO2)-O-18, (CO2)-O-16,18 , and mixtures) shows that these two vibrations involve two equivalent CO2 subunits. The excellent agreement with frequencies, intensities, and isotopic frequency ratios from density-functional calculations supports assignment to the symmetrical C2O4- anion with D-2d symmetry. Photodissociation (470-580 nm) and failure to observe these absorptions in identical experiments doped with the electron trapping molecule CCl4 further support the molecular anion assignments. Although absorptions were observed for weak (CO2) (CO2-) complexes, no evidence was found for the asymmetric O2C . OCO- molecule-anion complex characterized by calculations. Abstract:After deposition of laser ablated aluminum with CO in excess argon at 11 K, distinct IR bands at 1682.3, 1803.9, and 1741.0 cm−1 have been observed in addition to the absorptions of neutral AlCO and Al(CO)2. With the aid of CO13 isotope enriched experiments and density functional calculations, the band at 1682.3 cm−1 has been assigned to the C–O stretch vibration of the AlCO− anion. Absorptions at 1803.9 and 1741.0 cm−1 have been assigned to the symmetric and antisymmetric C–O stretching vibrations of the Al(CO)2− anion, respectively. Vertical detachment energies of AlCO− and Al(CO)2− as well as the electron affinities of AlCO and Al(CO)2 have been calculated. The properties of MCO− anions (M=B, Ga, and In) have also been predicted for comparison with those of AlCO−.

Abstract:The structure, binding energy and vibrational frequencies of the CO2NO2− anion have been theoretically studied using Becke's three-parameter non-local exchange functional with the correlation functional of Lee, Yang, and Parr (B3LYP) and the unrestricted second-order Moller–Plesset (MP2) methods. Two structural isomers are found to be stable on the singlet potential energy surface. One is coordinated between the C and N atoms with planar C2v symmetry, and the other is coordinated between the C atom of the CO2 moiety and the O atom of the NO2 moiety with Cs symmetry. Theoretical calculations reveal that these two isomers are close in energy, with the former slightly more stable, and their binding energies with respect to CO2+NO2− are estimated to be 8.8 and 8.1kcal/mol, respectively, at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level of theory.

Abstract:Photoionization of Ar center dot NO complex is studied with photoionization mass spectroscopy (PIMS) and Photoionization efficiency spectroscopy (PIES) by synchrotron radiation, supersonic molecule beam and reflection time of flight mass spectrum (RTOF-MS). In the PIES of Ar-NO, an intensive semi-resonance structure is observed. The ionization energy (IE) of Ar center dot NO and dissociation energy (DE) of Ar center dot NO+ and Ar center dot NO are calculated using Gaussian-2 method calculation. The equilibrium geometry and harmonic vibrational frequencies of Ar center dot NO+ and Ar center dot NO complexes are calculated using a variety of basis sets and different theories.

Abstract:Laser-ablated ruthenium or osmium atom reactions with CO and NO mixtures in solid argon produce unsaturated metal carbonyl nitrosyls including M(CO)(NO) and 18-electron configuration M(CO)2(NO)2 molecules (M=Ru, Os). The observed absorption bands of reaction products are identified by isotopic substitution, isotopic ratios and isotopic distributions (13CO, 15NO, and mixtures). DFT (B3LYP and BP86) vibrational fundamental calculations reproduce observed frequencies and isotopic shifts very well. The bonding and reaction mechanism are discussed.
Insights into the Anomalous Vibrational Frequency Shifts of Co2 Adsorbed to Metal Sites in Microporous Frameworks

Abstract:Diffuse reflectance infrared (IR) spectroscopy was used to study the structure and dynamics of H2 and CO2 adsorbed within the isostructural metalorganic frameworks M2L (M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn; L = 2,5-dioxidobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) referred to as M-MOF-74 and CPO-27-M. Cluster models of the primary adsorption site were excised from periodic models that were optimized using plane-wave density functional theory at the PerdewBurkeErnzerhof (PBE) level. Models incorporating an adsorbed H2 or CO2 were optimized using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT), and the anharmonic vibrational frequencies of the adsorbate were calculated using the discrete variable representation method. The calculated vibrational frequency shifts reveal the same trend among the M2L materials as those observed experimentally and provide insight into the origins of these shifts. Our experimental spectra of adsorbed CO2 confirm a unique blue shift of the v(3) mode for molecules adsorbed in Mg2L, while the frameworks assembled from transition metals induce a red shift. By shifting the focus to the CO2 local vibrational modes, a deeper insight into the influence of back bonding (metal d-electron density donation into CO2 pi* orbitals) is revealed; for Mg2L there is a near-complete cancellation of the opposing local mode contributions to the observed frequency shift. Additional spectral features in the CO2 v(3) region are assigned to (1) the v(3) mode of the (CO2)-C-13 isotopologue, (2) a combination mode involving a v(2) excitation, and (3) librational sidebands arising from center-of-mass motion of the adsorbed molecule on the surface. Interestingly, below 100 K we observe the appearance of a new band that is distinct from the primary v(3) band observed at room temperature. This band is attributed to an alternate, localized orientation of CO2 adsorbed to the metal site, which is supported by the DFT model.

Abstract:Infrared photodissociation spectra are measured for mass selected cation complexes with a chemical formula [MC7O6](+) (M = Fe, Co, Ni) formed via pulsed laser evaporation of metal target in expansions of helium gas seeded by CO. The geometries of the complexes are determined by comparison of the experimental spectra with the simulated spectra from density functional calculations. All of these complexes are identified to have [M(CO)(4)(C3O2)](+) structures involving a carbon suboxide ligand, which binds the metal center in an eta(1) fashion. The antisymmetric CO stretching vibration of C3O2 is slightly red-shifted upon coordination. The donor-acceptor bonding interactions between C3O2 and the metal centers are analyzed using the EDA-NOCV method. The results show that M <- C3O2 sigma donation is stronger than the M -> C3O2 pi back-donation in these cation complexes.

Abstract:The ClCu (η 2-O 2) and ClCuNN complexes have been isolated by codeposition of laser ablated CuCl 2 or CuCl targets with O 2/Ar or N 2/Ar mixtures at 11K. Based on isotopic substituted experiments and DFT calculations, infrared absorptions at 1175.0cm -1 and 2296.3cm -1 are assigned to O-O stretching mode of ClCu (η 2-O 2) and N-N stretching mode of ClCuNN, respectively . Theoretical calculations predicted ClCu(η 2-O 2) to be of C 2v, symmetry with a 3B 1 ground state, and its dissociation energy with respect to CuCl + O 2 is estimated to be 52.3kJ/mol. For ClCuNN, it was found to be a linear molecule with a 1∑ + ground state, and its dissociation energy is 85.3kJ/mol with respect to CuCl and N 2.

Additional metal independent absorptions at 2130.8 and 1274.4 cm(-1), and at 1852.4, 1189.2, and 679.2 cm(-1) increase on annealing to 8 K. Isotopic substitution shows that both band sets involve two equivalent CO2 subunits. Based on density functional theory calculations of structures and vibrational frequencies, the 2130.8 and 1274.4 cm(-1) bands are assigned to the C2O4+ cation with C-2h symmetry, and the 1852.4, 1189.2, and 679.2 cm(-1) bands are assigned to the C2O4+ anion with D-2d symmetry. Abstract:Reactions of laser-ablated Nb atoms with CO2 give insertion products ONbCO and O2Nb(CO)(2) and the negative species O2Nb(CO)(2)(-), which have been identified by matrix isolation FTIR method and DFT calculations. Two ONbCO structural products (I and II) were observed with infrared absorptions at 1902.6/960.1 and 1821.3/915.6 cm(-1), respectively. UV light irradiation destroyed the O2Nb(CO)(2)(-) anion completely, while the intensities of ONbCO(II) and O2NbCO were enhanced markedly. Sample annealing led to the obvious increase of ONbCO(II), while the ONbCO(I) can further combine with CO2 to form O2Nb(CO)(2).

Abstract:Laser-ablated manganese atoms react with CO and NO mixtures upon condensation in excess argon and further annealing to produce a series of unsaturated manganese carbonyl nitrosyl complexes including Mn-(CO)(NO), Mn(CO)(NO)(2), and Mn(CO)(2)(NO). The Mn(CO)(NO) complex isomerizes to Mn(CO)(eta(2)-NO) on visible photolysis, which rearranges to the isocyanate OMnNCO molecule on ultraviolet photolysis. The Mn(CO)(NO)(eta(2)-NO) and Mn(CO)(NO)(2)(eta(2)-NO) isomers also appear on annealing as does Mn(CO)(4)(NO). The major product after annealing is the stable 18-electron molecule Mn(CO)(NO)(3). The observed absorption bands of reaction products were identified by isotopic substitution ((CO)-C-13-O-16, (NO)-N-15-O-16, (NO)-N-15-O-18, and mixtures) and reproduced within 1-3% by density functional theory calculations of vibrational fundamentals. The bonding and reaction mechanisms are discussed. The isocyanate species formed here from the simple Mn(CO)(NO) complex is relevant to catalytic reactions for pollution control.

Abstract:Infrared spectra of arsenic carbonyls trapped in an argon matrix by co-condensation of laser-ablated arsenic atoms and electrons with carbon monoxide are reported. Based on isotopic substitution experiments and theoretical calculations, an IR band at 1919.3cm−1 has been assigned to the C–O stretching vibration of the neutral AsCO, and a 1756.4cm−1 band to the C–O stretching mode of the AsCO− anion. The ground states of AsCO and AsCO− were predicted to be 2Π and 1Σ+, respectively. The formation mechanism and the nature of bonding are discussed.

Abstract:Laser-ablated Ni, Pd, and Pt atoms have been reacted with CO molecules followed by condensation in excess neon at 4 K. Besides the neutral metal carbonyl Species, metal carbonyl anions [M(CO)(n)(-) (n = 1-3)] and cations [Ni(CO)(n)(+) (n = 1-4), Pd(CO)(n)(+) (n = 1,2), and Pt(CO)(n)(+) (n = 1-3)] have been produced and identified. Doping with the CCl4 electron trap increases cation and decreases anion absorptions and confirms the identification of the ionic species. The excellent agreement between observed bands and frequencies and isotopic frequency ratios from the DFT calculations supports the vibrational assignments and the identification of these metal carbonyl complexes.

Abstract:Binary nickel, palladium, and platinum nitrous oxide complexes Ni(NNO)x, Pd(NNO)x (x = 1, 2), and PtNNO have been produced by the reactions of laser-evaporated metal atoms with nitrous oxide in solid argon. The complexes were identified on the basis of isotopically substituted infrared absorptions as well as theoretical frequency calculations. These complexes were characterized to have structures with the terminal N atom of N(2)O bound to the metal atoms. The MNNO complexes are photosensitive and rearrange to OMNN or MO + N(2) upon ultraviolet-visible irradiation.

Abstract:Laser-ablated V and Ti atoms react with CO2 molecules to give primarily the insertion products, OMCO and O2M(CO)2, which have been isolated in a solid argon matrix. Photoisomerization of OMCO molecules to form the side-bonded OM−(η2-CO) isomers and photoionization to give the OMCO+ and OMOC+ cations proceed upon mercury arc photolysis. The product absorptions were identified by isotopic substitution and density functional calculations of isotopic frequencies.

Abstract:Copper and silver chloride–nitrous oxide complexes: ClCuNNO and ClAgNNO have been produced and trapped in solid argon by co-deposition of laser-evaporated metal chlorides with nitrous oxide in excess argon. On the basis of isotopic substituted experiments as well as theoretical calculations, infrared absorptions at 2305.8 and 1318.4cm−1, and 2291.2 and 1325.4cm−1 are assigned to the N–N and N–O stretching modes of the linear ClCuNNO and ClAgNNO complexes, respectively. The binding energies for the complexes with respect to MCl (M=Cu, Ag) and N2O were computationally estimated to be 27.9 and 13.1kcal/mol.

Abstract:Laser-ablated late transition metal atoms Cr through Ni react with CO2 molecules to give the insertion products OMCO, which have been isolated in solid argon. The insertion OMCO- molecular anions (Cr through Cu) were formed by electron capture and/or reaction with CO2-, and the addition MCO2- anions (M = Co, Ni, Cu) were produced by direct react:ion with CO2-.
