Abstract:With 172 adolescent subjects aged from 12 to 17,this study examined the influence of early experiences on adolescents' implicit self-esteem.The results indicated that:(1)Parental marital status was significantly related to the level of implicit self-esteem.Adolescents from divorced families had lower implicit self-esteem than those from intact families. However, parental marital status was not related to adolescents' explicit self-esteem;(2)There existed marginally significant positive correlation between adolescents' implicit self-esteem and their parents' "emotional warmth and understanding" and their mothers' "favoritism",which suggests positive parenting styles could enhance adolescents' implicit self-esteem;(3)Parents' "rejection and negating ","excessive interference and excessive protection",and mothers' "punishment and firm control" were significantly related to the discrepancy between adolescents' implicit self-esteem and explicit self-esteem,which indicated that negative parenting styles might be one of the factors affecting the consistency of adolescents' implicit self-esteem and explicit self-esteem.
