Abstract:Based on monitoring the runoff water quality on different underlying surface conditions in Beijing and analyzing the experiment data via Pearson statistical method, the paper covered the time-varying regularity of stormwater runoff pollutants and the even mean concentrations (EMCs) of stormwater runoff pollutants. Major factors for runoff water quality were also analyzed. The results showed that compared with asphalt road and bituminous roof, the green roof had lower flush effect, playing an important role in reducing the concentration of runoff pollutants. The initial EMCs values of COD, NH3-N, NO3-N and TP were higher than the fifth category of national surface water standard. Parts of them were even beyond the third category of emission discharge standard. The values of EMCs were positively correlated with dry weather deposits and runoff duration, and negatively correlated with precipitation and rainfall intensity. The analysis indicated that the controlling preliminary runoff pollution and surface clean-up can reduce the urban rainfall runoff pollution.

Abstract:Growing concerns about urban runoff pollution and water scarcity caused by urbanization have prompted the application of bioretention facilities to manage urban stormwater. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of proposed bioretention facilities regarding road runoff pollutant removal and the variation characteristics of the media physicochemical properties and microbial diversity in dry-cold regions. Two types of bioretention facilities were designed and then constructed in Tianjin Eco-city, China, on the basis of combined soil filter media screened by a laboratory-scale test with a modified bioretention facility (MBF) containing soil moisture conservation ropes. Redundancy analysis was performed to evaluate the relationships between the variation in media physicochemical properties and microbial communities. An increase in media moisture could promote an increase in the relative abundance of several dominant microbial communities. In the MBF, the relatively low nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) (0.75 mg/L) and total nitrogen (TN) (4.71 mg/L) effluent concentrations, as well as better removal efficiencies for TN and NO3-N in challenge tests, were mainly attributed to the greater relative abundance of Proteobacteria (25.2%) that are involved in the microbial nitrogen transformation process. The MBF also had greater media microbial richness (5253 operational taxonomic units) compared to the conventional bioretention facility and in situ saline soils. The results indicate that stormwater runoff treated by both bioretention facilities has potential use for daily greening and road spraying. The proposed design approach for bioretention facilities is applicable to LID practices and sustainable stormwater management in other urban regions.

Abstract:Wastewater reclamation and reuse is an efficient approach to solve water shortage problems in China.As the persistent and cumulative of micro-organic-pollutants,they were frequently detected in reclaimed water and even in groundwater.These micro-organic-pollutants could do harm to human health and the environment at very low concentrations.Artificial composite soil treatment system could remove pollutants from the wastewater through the physical,chemical,or biological interactions between the filter materials and the contaminants.It could effectively remove these micro-organic-pollutants with less investment,low operating costs and simple operation process.Current researches on artificial soil treatment system were about filter materials,the re-oxygenation way of the system,microbial properties,clogging and operation method which focused on the removal of some conventional pollutants,such as COD,TN,TP and so on,while the studies on the removal of some emerging organic pollutants were lacking.To get stable and better removal of micro-organic-pollutants on artificial composite soil treatment system is of significance for practical engineering application.

Abstract:Nowadays more and more cities are suffering from scarcity of water resources.In order to use stormwater sufficiently,some measures of rainwater utilization,such as storage ponds,sunken lawn and pervious road pavement,are taken in many cities.In this paper the impacts of sunken-lawn and storages pond on urban flood are analyzed in Beijing Olympic park by using SWMM model.The flood peak flow at main sections of rainwater drainage pipes is calculated under the conditions with sunken-lawn or storage ponds.The results show that flood peak and the runoff coefficient can be reduced effectively,the peak time postponed and meanwhile the amount of rainwater utilized as resources increased.

Abstract:The integrated simulation of urban drainage system is a prevailing method to estimate its water environmental impact,however,there have not been any related studies in China.Therefore,integrating Storm Water Management Model(SWMM) from USEPA and a river water quality model from Tsinghua University,an integrated simulation tool was developed.The tool can simulate the municipal wastewater and pollution load transfer procedure including the storm runoff process,sewer system conveying process,wastewater treatment process and the degradation process in receiving water body.The simulation tool was applied in Shenzhen City to assess the water environmental impact of the sewer system planning scenario.The calculation results show that the planning scenario can enormously improve the water quality of the mainstream of Shenzhen River System,while the improvement of the branches is not enough.The results also show that the scenario has different effects on different water quality indexes,which means that the COD rate satisfies the quality standard while the up-to-standard rate of TN and TP is still very low.Based on the results,some suggestions were given to improve the planning scenario.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is identification and characterization of hydrological process of urban runoff, as well as concentration variation of pollutants in it. Samples were collected in 4 rainfall events in Beijing from Jun. 2006 to Aug. 2006. Hydrology and pollution of the rainfall-runoff process were analyzed on roof and road. Study results show that the shapes of hydrological curves of runoff, despite for a 5 - 20 min delay and a milder tendency, are similar to rainfall curves. Runoff coefficients of roof are 0.80 - 0.98, while 0.87 - 0.97 of road. Event mean concentrations (EMC) of pollutants are influenced by build-up and wash-off features, which leads to a higher concentration in road runoff than in roof runoff. Major pollutants that excess the water quality standards are COD, TN, and TP. Evident correlations (> 0.1) are found between pollutants. Correlation with particles are higher for COD and SO4(2-) (> 0.5), while lower for nutrients (<0.5). First flush effects (FFE) are found and affected by several factors, such as pollutant variety, types of land covers, and rainfall intensity. FFE are found more intense in SS, more frequently in road runoff, and more difficult to form for COD and nutrients with low rainfall intensity. Therefore, control of first period of runoff would be an effective approach for runoff management in Beijing.

Abstract:Stormwater runoff is identified as urban nonpoint source pollution that increasingly introduces contaminants to urban water bodies and impedes sustainable development. The pollution load of runoff varies due to the interception of different land cover types during the urban hydrological process. During the rainy season (June–August) in 2018, five different underlying surfaces (green roof, parking lot, urban road, parkway, and grassland) were selected in Guangzhou to analyze the migration characteristics of stormwater runoff pollutants. The concentrations of heavy metals, such as chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg), as well as total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were collected and analyzed on different underlying surfaces with the rainfall data at the beginning of a stormwater runoff event. The results showed that PAHs, heavy metals, and TP existed mainly in the form of particles; nitrogen was mainly present as ammonia and nitrate; and the TN, TP, PAHs, and heavy metal were significantly different in the stormwater runoff on each underlying surface. The pollutant concentration in urban road runoff was the highest, accounting for 40–70% of the total pollutant concentration in the stormwater runoff, and the pollutant concentration in green roof runoff was the lowest, accounting for 10–40% of the total pollutant concentration in the runoff. An obvious effect of initial rainfall erosion was observed during stormwater runoff from urban roads and parking lots, and the scouring effect on grasslands and green roofs was mainly due to the many factors affecting the underlying surface during the middle and late stages. The rates of reduction of heavy metals were the most significant. The effect of water purification was positively correlated with stormwater runoff duration. The rates of reduction of TN, heavy metals (Cr, Cd, and Hg), and PAHs in the grassland areas were 35.20 ± 26.28, 0.24 ± 10.13, 71.77 ± 10.97,32.62 ± 110.48, and 41.30 ± 8.78%, respectively. This study could provide a theoretical basis for preventing and managing pollutants in urban stormwater runoff.

Abstract:In this article, based on river quality simulation and system optimization, a water quality model was established for scenic river after rainfall discharge in flood season, with the target of making water pollutants meet the standard in priority and saving expenditure on pollution control. With the principle of reducing sewage from combined sewage pumping station and heavily polluted initial rainwater, a mathematical multiobjective planning model was constructed for rain sewage pollution control in flood season, and one scenic river in a northern city was taken for simulation example. The results show that: the optimization result meets the requirements of planning, among which, sewage reduction from the combined pumping station accounts for 17.38% in the total reduction of rain sewage, and the reduction in the heavily polluted rain water accounts for 77.24% in the total reduction of rainwater pumping station. The planning scheme can provide theoretical basis for pollution control of scenic river in flood season, and for rational reconstruction and layout of outfalls along two banks of the river.

Abstract:<p>Gradation design of urban road bioretention soil media is critical for the construction and performance of sponge cities, but current design methods are simplistic with reliance on local experiences. This study proposes an experiment-modeling based design procedure that effectively balances runoff reduction and pollutant removal performance based on both material properties analysis and project site performance simulation. A coarse aggregate void filling (CAVF) method is adopted for soil medium design and a stormwater treatment performance evaluation system is proposed for road bioretention containing the designed soil media. The proposed procedure was illustrated in a case study of a real project scenario. A hydrological model was built in the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software to evaluate the runoff reduction and pollutant removal performance. Results show that soil medium permeability is a key factor affecting the quantity and quality of runoff. Soil media with higher permeability improve the runoff reduction performance but decrease the pollution removal efficiency of the bioretention. Compared to the existing soil media design methods that are highly empirical or simplistic, the proposed design procedure relies on objective evaluation indices and quantitative analysis steps, and so may be applied to various design scenarios in stormwater management practices with improved reliability.</p>

Abstract:Low impact development raises that maintaining the urban hydrologic cycle by source control. With the widely spread of "sponge city" construction, increasingly attention was paid to LID in the application of urban rain lfood management. As one of the key technology in urban lfood prevention, storm-water simulation technology could effectively simulate and forecast the rain lfood situation of target area when heavy rainning comes. This study has designed the LID measures for Tsinghua campus as wel as the Xue Tang Road area, and adopted SWMM model to establish their rain lfood model, aiming at comparing the change of storage capacity and the runoff before and after utilizing LID measures and exploring how the LID practices work on Tsinghua campus storm-water management.

Abstract:In winter, cold cities have a severe shortage of water resources. Snow is a potential water resource, and the effective classification and recycling of snow is, therefore, significant for addressing the sustainable utilization of urban water resources in cities during the winter months. In this study, the water quality and pollutant composition of snow collected along a transect across a typical street were analyzed to develop an on-site treatment technique based on the classification of snow water. The levels of suspended substances, COD, salt, ammonia, and oil in snow from urban streets were relatively high. The salinity, conductivity, and chloride levels were also high due to the application of a snow-melting agent. Twenty-nine major pollutants were identified, and the oily substances were dominated by hexadecane accompanied by toxic substances such as BTEX and naphthalene. Snow can adsorb and receive pollutants from the streets, while becoming a carrier for pollutants. The underground space below city streets is proposed for establishing a snow-melting system. The snow meltwater may be directly discharged into double subsurface tanks if the concentration of suspended substances is less than 200mg/L. A V-type filtering tank may be used if the concentration of suspended substances is greater than 200mg/L. This method, which integrates city planning and municipal technology, accomplishes both the recycling and utilization of snow water, as well as the on-site treatment of pollutants.

Abstract:Stormwater resources are not effectively utilized in many Chinese cities,which not only wastes water resources but has also brought about serious urban flooding problems.Urban green space,as a resilient approach of stormwater regulation and storage,has been widely applied in urban flooding control and sponge city construction.Through a review on relevant literature in the past two decades,this paper systematically com-pares the methods commonly used in the assessment on stormwater regulation and storage capacity of urban green space,examines the pattern fac-tors affecting the capacity,and expounds the application of urban green space in stormwater management at different scales.The literature review aims to provide a scientific basis for the alleviation of urban flooding problems and the construction of sponge cities.Meanwhile,the paper also puts forward four development trends in the research on the stormwater regulation and storage function of urban green space.
Simulative Analysis on Storm Flood in Typical Urban Region of Beijing Based on SWMM

Abstract:Based on SWMM(Storm Water Management Model), a typical urban region is selected to calculate the status under the design storms with different frequencies in the region, such as drainage effect and water-logging, overland flow on road etc.,and simultaneously, the storm floods under different conditions, including reforming the protruding green belts into plain or concave ones, placing flood storage areas etc.,are simulated with the evaluation on their effects. The simulative calculation results show that all the three measures mentioned herein have larger effects on the infiltration, runoff, flood peak flow and overland flow and can greatly alleviate the pressure of the draining pipeline, clip the flood peak and increase the infiltration as well, if they are taken as the additional important measures of urban drainage for flood control.

Abstract:Urban storm runoff is a major source of pollutants in receiving water bodies. To assess the impact of urban stormwater runoff on an urban river, the runoff process of total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium (NH4), and total phosphorus (TP) were investigated on road surfaces classified as arterial road (AR), residential area (RA), and industrial area (IA) in the Pingshan River (PSR) watershed in Shenzhen, China. Event mean concentration (EMC) was calculated to analyze the water quality of road runoff, and the dimensionless M(V) cumulative curves were used to estimate the course of decreasing concentration of runoff pollutants during each rainfall event. Multicriteria decision making methods (PROMETHEE-GAIA) were used to identify the linkage between runoff pollutants, land use types, and rainfall intensity. The EMCs of COD and TP in runoff exceeded the class IV level of the water quality standard for surface water (China). RA was a major potential source for NH4, COD, and TP in the river. Controlling the first flush is critical to decrease the effect of road runoff on receiving water bodies, as most runoff pollutants in AR, RA, and IA had a first flush effect during heavy rainfall. The specific management measure for runoff pollution varied with land use type. Reducing road TSS concentrations was effective for controlling runoff pollution in AR and RA because NH4, TP, and COD attached to particulate matter. In IA, the collection and reuse of stormwater in the initial rainfall period were effective for reducing the effect of soluble pollutants in runoff on receiving water bodies. This study provides new information for managing urban road stormwater runoff in different land use types.

Abstract:Climate change results in serious disasters, such as urban inland inundation and storm flood, which have threatened the human's living and the development of society. In order to relieve such pressure, we proposed to develop the overall construction of "sponge city". Urban water system, as the most significant part of the urban eco system, is playing the important role in realizing the "sponge city". In such context, this paper is trying to summarize the literature reviews on the urban water system planning from the perspective of stormwater management, such as the urban water environment, urban water landscape, and urban water spatial, as well as the planning techniques and regulations. On the other hand, the author also discusses the main problems of the existing researches, and puts forward the expectation of future research orientation.

Abstract:To assess the viability and effectiveness of bioretention cell in enhancing rainwater resource utilization within sponge cities, this study employs field monitoring, laboratory testing, and statistical analysis to evaluate the water purification capabilities of bioretention cell. Findings indicate a marked purification impact on surface runoff, with removal efficiencies of 59.81% for Suspended Solids (SS), 39.01% for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), 37.53% for Ammonia Nitrogen (NH3-N), and 30.49% for Total Phosphorus (TP). The treated water largely complies with rainwater reuse guidelines and tertiary sewage discharge standards. Notably, while previous research in China has emphasized water volume control in sponge city infrastructures, less attention has been given to the qualitative aspects and field-based evaluations. This research not only fills that gap but also offers valuable insights and practical implications for bioretention cell integration into sponge city development. Moreover, the methodology and outcomes of this study serve as a benchmark for future sponge city project assessments, offering guidance to relevant authorities.
