Abstract:Objective To measure the volume of the whole liver, the left lateral segment and the caudate lobe using 16 slices helical CT, establish standard liver volume formula and explore the correlation between hepatic lobe volume and severity of the disease. Materials and Methods One hundred and one patients with Virus induced Cirrhosis, including 39 cases of Child Pugh A, 38 cases of Child Pugh B and 24 cases of Child Pugh C, and 113 normal controls were performed 16 slice CT scan. The volume and per BSA (body surface area) volume of the whole liver, the left lateral segment and the caudate lobe, the proportion of the left lateral segment and caudate lobe volume to the total liver volume, volume index and volume change ratio of 113 normal controls and 101 patients were calculated. The parameters of volume were compared with Child Pugh classification. The standard liver volume formula was constructed from body weight, body height or BSA. Results There was a positive correlation between liver volume and body height, body weight [LV (cm3)=12.90×BW(kg)+437.91]or body surface area [LV(cm3)=882.08×BSA(m2)-308.12].The total liver volume of the control group was (1222.76±216.96) cm3.The volume of the whole liver and the left lateral segment were (798.01±203.64)cm3 and (213.04±74.84)cm3 respectively for Child C patients, which were all significantly smaller than that of Child A, B patients(P<0.05).The volume of caudate lobe was (36.83±22.11)cm3 for Child A patients, significantly bigger than that of Child B, C patients(P<0.05). Conclusion CT measured liver volume and standard liver volume formula were helpful in evaluating liver volume variation,The enlargement of the left lateral segment was absolute in Child A,B patients, but was relative in Child C patients. The enlargement of the caudate lobe was absolute in Child A patients, but was relative in Child B and C patients.
