Abstract:This review investigates the combined effects of stress and carbonation on the durability of concrete, an important but under-researched factor affecting infrastructure longevity. Carbonation substantially degrades concrete, particularly under tensile, compressive, and bending stresses. This paper synthesizes recent findings to explore how these stress states influence the progression of carbonation and overall durability, emphasizing data on carbonation depth, mechanical performance, and structural integrity. Key models and experimental results are evaluated, revealing significant gaps in current knowledge, including limited insights into the long-term impacts of stress-carbonation interactions and the lack of standardized testing methods. To address these gaps, future research should prioritize the refinement of carbonation prediction models under complex stress conditions and the development of high-resilience materials suitable for challenging environments. Ultimately, this review aims to establish a foundation for more accurate predictions of concrete service life, thereby supporting advancements in material science and sustainable construction practices.
